Weekly Share: Other JCrew-like Retailers

This is the weekly "Other JCrew-like Retailers" post (similar to the "Off On A Tangent" posts), where we can share our finds from other retailers that have offerings similar to J.Crew (like Anthropologie, LE Canvas, Gap, BR, Talbots, Ann Taylor, and the like.)

If you have recently encountered items that are similar to J.Crew, maybe you might be willing to share that information with us in this post.

Please feel free to share your story on almost any topic— including experiences with certain merchandise pieces, promotions/ offers, in-store visits, transactions with store associates, etc.

  1. For anyone interested in Emerson Fry, they are having a great moving sale on their sweaters -- 35% off using the code EFSweaters1015. Terms: Not to be used with any other discount. Does not apply to previously place orders / previously discounted items. Order must be placed by 11:59PM EST on Sunday, October 25.

I'm interested in the Long Wool sweater -- either the triangle version, or the solid in black, however, I'm always unsure with this type of oversize fit, as I'm pretty short at 5'3. Just love the apparent quality of the wool, and the cozy look of this sweater!

    1. Thanks so much for the heads up! Placed an order this morning, and got a shipping notice this afternoon-very impressive!

    2. Awesome, Wendy! Can I be so nosy as to ask what you ordered!? I'm still new to Emerson Fry, and am very interested by other's experiences and what they're digging!

    3. R, I've recently become somewhat obsessed with Emerson Fry. Everything I've purchased has been high quality and well made. I love that the garments are made in the USA. I'm trying to find past season items that I missed out on before I knew about EF. The minimalist cool girl chic vibe really appeals to me. I find sizing to be close to J. Crew though some things are intentionally oversized.

    4. Of course, R. I got the Yoshi sweater, as it had caught my eye when Audreybella reviewed it. Hoping I guessed right on the sizing. It's a little more than I tend to spend on one piece, but could be a workhorse. I'm trying to buy less quantity, more quality. We'll see 😉

    5. Desert Flower, I understand the obsession! They have such a great aesthetic and quality to back it up. I really appreciate the US made angle too. Have you purchased anything from this F/W collection?

Wendy, the Yoshi sweater looks great! I saw it on the "Grechen's Closet" blog. Very flattering in spite of being so oversized. I really love the black-red colour that they've just released. Please let us know your thoughts once you get it :)

    6. R, I'm planning on ordering the cocoon coat in jet. I live in Arizona and that is the perfect weight for the cooler months. I have the graffiti coat from an earlier season and it is amazing.

    7. Desert Flower, I love that coat! I'm very intrigued by "fall weight linen'"!

    8. DesertFlower, you may already know this, or have placed an order, but EF has another moving sale this week -- 40% off coats with the code EFCoats1015. HTH!!

    9. Hi, R. I am glad I waited to order, that code is amazing!!

  2. Madewell has some new arrivals!

In spite of being a disgruntled Canadian who won't use Borderfree to ship Madewell items to me here at home (thankfully, I get to the US frequently enough), I am really loving *some* of their items this season -- in particular, I think they do flannel well, and I love the Moderne sweater -- which is a nice, thick, cozy all-wool sweater. I was happy to see that the new Vancouver Nordstrom is carrying Madewell items -- an extremely paltry selection, but nice to have the option to see or purchase certain items without being subject to Borderfree!

  3. Can anyone comment on the likelihood of popbacks on Anthro? I'd been staying off of their site for my own safety, but of course when I looked the other day there was a pair of sale shoes that were love at first sight. When I went back to buy them the next day, they were gone. I've checked back a few times, but no sign of them so far. Is there anyone here who follows the ebb and flow of Anthro a bit more closely?

    1. There's a weekly popback thread on the blog Effortless Anthropologie, and based on the amount of discussion, it seems like popbacks at Anthro are a fairly frequent occurrence.

    2. Thank you for pointing me in the right direction. Wow, I thought I was a pretty resourceful online shopper, but the popback system they have on that blog makes me look like a rank amateur!

  4. If you like NM Last Call, there's a coupon for 40% off one item. Coupon is good through tomorrow. Picked up a pair of J Brand jeans (love this brand) for $49 (retail $240 @ NM). Jeans remind me of JC's Corbin Wash.

  5. Considering how disappointing JC down coats have been the past few seasons, I'm considering Penfield for a new (short) down puffer. I like the kind of retro look of some of the styles, but this brand is hard to find info or reviews on! Anyone have any experience with them?

    1. Hi Julie,

I've never purchased a down-filled jacket from Penfield, so I can only give a limited review, but I have purchased the Kasson jacket and a flannel shirt (Chatham), and while I didn't end up keeping the Kasson, I thought the quality was great, and the Chatham shirt was one of the best quality flannel shirts I've ever owned. My experience with both items is that they ran a bit smaller in the chest and maybe through the shoulders than J. Crew, but not extremely so. The only thing I remember with returning the Kasson is they don't give you as long to get the item back to them (4 weeks, maybe?) which isn't the end of the world, but just something to be mindful of.

    2. Thanks R - any info is helpful! Good point about the returns - I checked and they only give you 28 days which is not unreasonable, but worth noting.

  6. I've shared a comprehensive list of sales taking place this weekend on my blog for those who want to stop by and check it out...lots of great deals going on. :)

  7. Anthropologie is offering free shipping/no minimum for a limited time, and they also sent out a first dibs email yesterday showcasing the new arrivals. Lots to love at Anthro, and I've shared a post with my personal picks here.
