Weekly Share: Other JCrew-like Retailers

This is the weekly "Other JCrew-like Retailers" post (similar to the "Off On A Tangent" posts), where we can share our finds from other retailers that have offerings similar to J.Crew (like Anthropologie, LE Canvas, Gap, BR, Talbots, Ann Taylor, and the like.)

If you have recently encountered items that are similar to J.Crew, maybe you might be willing to share that information with us in this post.

Please feel free to share your story on almost any topic— including experiences with certain merchandise pieces, promotions/ offers, in-store visits, transactions with store associates, etc.

  1. I just received the perfect LBD from Anthropologie - the Paimpont black silk dress ($198). It fits perfectly on my busty frame, and is very comfortable. I paid full price and have no regrets - I would have paid more. The customer service wasn't great and I wish the dress had come packaged differently, but this dress is worth all that.

This is the kind of dress that JC should be selling and isn't. I can barely remember being so pleased with a JC item - and paying full price to boot.

  2. Everlane just rolled out its fall cashmere line-up. Basic styles & neutral colors, with a certain minimalist appeal. Their cashmere got mixed reviews in the company's first year or two, but the one sweater I bought & wore constantly last winter has held up beautifully w/ no pilling, stretching, or shrinking.

    1. Hi Cobalt,

Thanks for sharing your experience with the newer Everlane cashmere! I purchased a cashmere crewneck a few years ago, and was not impressed. I really like the dress/tunic, but considering my past experience, and that the price had gone up, I was going to pass, but am reconsidering now!

  3. If you need a striped boatneck sweater (and who doesn't?), the stripe boatneck sweater from Gap is great. The sizing is a little tricky - I found it a little too short in S, too boxy in M, but got an S Tall and the fit is awesome, slightly long and fits my long arms perfectly. It's 100% merino wool in a Milano stitch reminiscent of old JC sweater jackets. Very pleasantly surprised and happy with this one - if you're willing to try a size or two, I would definitely recommend.

  6. On the trench front we talked about a while back - I finally tried the Ann Taylor classic trench. The color was slightly darker than the website pictures, and although the coat fit well in my usual S, it was too long for me at 40" (I'm 5'5" and it hit below my knees - the Icon trench is a much better length for me at 34"). Although the trench looked to be well-made, the fabric was not water-resistant. This coupled with the length made it a return for me.

    1. thanks for the review!! I've been looking at that trench -- I like mine to hit mid thigh, so that one would definitely be too long for me too.

  7. Popped into BR after work - 40% any purchase, 50% off sale rack. Loving their pieces in the burgundy/merlot colourway this fall, so rich and yummy. Some great simple pieces - picked up the burgundy sweatshirt, the cropped windowpane top and the faux-leather front top. Tried a few sweaters but they have put a lot of angora and mohair in their blends this year and for me they were just all too itchy.

  8. Got my COS shipment this morning. Love that order to receipt was 5 days. I ordered the knit detail jersey top, it was on sale for $25. I liked the top, I ordered an XS but think S at COS might be a better fit. The material was great, length was perfect and the the neck detail was unique. Unfortunately, the slit in the front was too low and not a keeper. The other item was the fine wool top in Rust. Loved the color and the simplicity of the top, Rounded hem and unfurnished edges but it was very thin, another JCA had mentioned this about COS. I was impressed with the quality and choice of natural materials and will try again.
