Michelle Obama sparkles in J.Crew
By Booth Moore
April 1, 2009
Against a backdrop of protests and economic angst, the fashion parade continues in London at the G-20 summit. Tuesday, First Lady Michelle Obama took off for London wearing an ivory Thakoon coat, then changed clothes on the plane before arriving in a chartreuse Jason Wu dress (love that, someone who travels in style).
By this morning, for a breakfast with Prime Minister Gordon Brown's wife, Sarah, and a visit to a cancer center, Obama had jettisoned the high-priced designer labels in favor of more fiscally conscious J.Crew -- a cheery, crystal-studded ivory cardigan and mint green jacquard pencil skirt.
The cardigan, by the way, is already sold out. (You can find similar beaded styles from the 1950s at almost any vintage store.) Next up, tea and cucumber sandwiches with the queen. Don't bet on seeing a hat, but maybe a sleeveless dress.
You just know that J.Crew's Mickey Drexler and Jenna Lyons are l-o-v-i-n-g the additional press coverage from Michelle Obama wearing both the Crystal Constellation Cardigan (Item 12280; $298.00) and the Dazzling-dots pencil skirt (Item 11804; $158.00)! ;)
As for First Lady Michelle Obama's outfit... it is an outfit that I would have never put together and it's definitely an outfit I could never pull off. With that said, I think she looks great! She looks both casual and chic. And the sparkles on that cardigan- absolutely pretty!
What are your thoughts on the different J.Crew items? Are you a fan of the sparkly cardigan? Do you like or dislike how First Lady Michelle Obama styled the pieces? :)
Although she pulls it off, there is nothing creative about the JCrew ensemble - a jacquard skirt with a beaded cardigan. Seems almost old school. But she needs to look pulled together and semi conservative and it works.
ReplyDeleteI prefer her in Wu, her outfits are more creative and edgy.
love the combo, it's refined but a little funky, which is right up my alley! :)
ReplyDeleteI'm not really into the shoes (taupe snakeskin? I can't tell), but they work with the outfit.
-H
Out of all her JCrew outfits this is the one I like best. She looks great! Which cardigan was this? Was it specially made for her or is is the crystal constellation one?
ReplyDeleteIt's interesting how the Prime Minister and his wife match but the Obamas don't. I don't Michelle looks good in pale colors. She needs to wear darker colors.
ReplyDeleteHi Alexis,
ReplyDeleteThanks for the heads up. I always enjoy seeing our first lady looking stylish in JCrew! I'm surprised the site doesn't have a page dedicated to her :} It's great that she's wearing items that are available online instead of the preview items. It makes sense because the spring line would work well on a visit to the U.K. this time of year. Everything should be in bloom right about now & those fresh colours would look lovely at an afternoon event.
However, I agree with you that this is not a look I would be able to pull off. Michelle is so tall & athletic - she can wear a lot of things that would overwhelm a petite like me. Still, I'm really impressed that Michelle Obama wears clothes that I can buy as well. It's a refreshing change form designer/ very $$$ clothes or less than exciting pantsuits.
Also, it's OT, but I recently rev'd an email from Jcrew announcing the grand opening of the Los Gatos B&M here in north Cali. They are moving into the old Sharper Image store on N Santa Cruz (the main st) & the local paper wrote:" "J. Crew is gutting the building so they can put their stamp and feel on the store," building owner Ed Stahl said. "They're enlarging the sales area and putting in a new display window." This is a good site because it's right on the main mall & gets a lot of foot traffic. Also, it's several blocks away from the competition as both the Gap & BR are on the other side of town.
The note indicated an opening date of the 14th. Which is weird because that's on a Tues. Maybe they're trying to avoid tax day? Also, the email said that there will be a "special offer on it's way". Of course, now my curiosity is piqued (although I would have gone anyway) & I can't wait!
Hope more good news is on it's way!
Heather :D
Considering she is meeting with world leaders, I thought the sparkly cardigan was a very appropriate choice to wear with the dazzling dots skirt. The DD pencil skirt is very versatile as far as pairing with different colors and it can be dressed up or down. MO is just gorgeous! I wonder of Jenna recommended this outfit for her.
ReplyDeleteTastymoog - I agree completely with you.
ReplyDeleteBTW - does anyone else have this problem...
I have been searching every site from GAP to target to Loft and I can not find anything on any of those sites that I like half as much as what I find on JCrew. Especially when it comes to basics like Tee shirts and shorts. I think I really do have a JCrew addiction
Does anyone know what shoes and bracelets she's wearing?
ReplyDeleteOK, who is the teeny tiny person behind them. You can see a bit of an arm, hand, foot. But that's it. At first I thought Mrs. B had an extra limb or two. LOL
ReplyDeleteThe outfit is nice but you would think they would have a hair stylist on board AFO.
I love it and I think it looks great- this combo works well for her. It's classy but still interesting to look at (with the different textures and patterns).
ReplyDeleteI totally feel bad for Gordon Brown in this photo, though. He's giving really bad face while everybody is posing. He was apparently the last to get the memo that a pic was being taken, eh?
Hi! This is off-topic, but I wasn't sure where else to ask this.
ReplyDeleteI was wondering if anyone had comments on the Fontana dress in the lighter colors (white or pink). I really like them but am worried that they might be too sheer. Has anyone tried it on / have any thoughts?
Also, does anyone know if the cropped chinos are the same cut as last year? Did they get looser (like the everyday chinos that no longer fit me :( )?
Thanks in advance for any help!
I love the outfit! MO has great style, and the high end/ low(er) end mix is a breath of fresh air at a time when so many celebrities are cookie-cutter. Should stylists be so obvious to make clones? I shudder every time I see Rachel Zoe. It is inspirational in a way to see a well put together mom in the public eye who doesn't seem vain while looking gorgeous and appropriate, and gives the impression to be doing it herself, or at least, doing it to suit her own style.
ReplyDeleteI think Mrs. Obama looks so beautiful in this outfit. She looks classy and appropriate...she seems to always get it right in the fashion department. The best part: J.Crew is accessible to almost all of us! It's refreshing to see real style that does not always have to come with a $$$$ price tag :)
ReplyDeleteI love this combo and I think it looks great on her! I like her in brighter colors. That skirt is so cute- I bet it will be selling out quick after this!
ReplyDeleteThe outfit is lovely but is wrong for the occasion. I could see wearing it at a ladies lunch though. Mrs. Obama needs protocol advice along with a proper stylist. Did someone else raise a question about having a hairdresser on board, I agree.
ReplyDeleteHeather D,
ReplyDeleteThanks for lettings us know! I'm from Saratoga but live in SoCal now, and I'll be in town that weekend, so I hope they do have a special sale!
I think Mrs. O looks faaaaaaaaaaabulous!
ReplyDeleteOT: Some of you saw the meringue-sleeve top in stores, right? I am trying to decide whether to order it or hit a B&M with my 25% off card. TIA!!!
Hi Pakcola,
ReplyDeleteYou're quite welcome. It was another one of those - edu email address gets the news & personal one does not- situations. I deduced that they didn't send it out to everyone so I decided to pass the news along.
Hope you get to the store that weekend & that all your finds are fabulous!
Cheers,
Heather:D
P.S. Don't forget to take your 25% off card along with you :}
I do think she looks great but why does she always wear pieces that highlight her pear shape?
ReplyDeleteI have wanted to order the dazzlong dots skirt for some time now, and I am afraid it's going to sell out. I wanted to order it over the red phone with my 25% off card, but I hear it's a little tighter than normal JC pencil skirts. Does anyone have any comments as to fit?
ReplyDeleteHi again,
ReplyDeleteI just wanted to modify my earlier comment re Michelle Obama's outfit. I said that the spring line would look great for an afternoon event. After re-reading the article, I realised that the President & First Lady were having breakfast with the Prime Minister & his wife with a different event scheduled that afternoon. I think that makes this choice event more suitable. After all, the Queen herself has been known to wear bright colours to morning & afternoon events.
That said, I presume the First Lady will change before she is formally presented tot HRH. I can't speak for my fellow JCAs, but I'm excited to see what she might wear to such an historic occasion. Knowing Michelle Obama, I'm sure it will be fabulous & uniquely her.
Looking forward to seeing more Jcrew in the news!
Heather:D
love the skirt! I wore mine the other day! not sure about that combination though. I ordered that sweater online and when I received it in the mail I was disappointed. Looked very old-ladyish and the quality was not good. I ended up returning it.
ReplyDeletedani_california: I have found the opposite to be true. I have purchased great basics from Martin & Osa, and basic fitted tees from Lands End for less money than what J Crew charges, and low or free shipping charges. I used to be a J Crew exclusive shopper, not now I look around to get the best deal. Please note the stuff that I received has style too.
ReplyDeleteLili Cupcake: I just bought the dazzlilng dots skirt. I'm normally a size 2 in jcrew pencil skirts and I needed to size up to a 4. It's a gorgeous skirt!
ReplyDeleteI love the outfit and think that she looks beautiful!!!
ReplyDeleteAt first I was not sure if I liked the skirt choice in this outfit - it does highlight her pear shape a bit much.
ReplyDeleteI do like how fresh and spring-like the colors are and I think she does pull it off even if its not the *most* flattering thing she could wear.
Anony@2:36
ReplyDeleteI agree with you Land's End has great quality and has definitely upped the style this season. I also find great basics at LLBean. Free shipping is great as well with no minimums. I no longer buy any basics from JCrew. I only buy my statement pieces from them.
I think she looks lovely too, but I"m getting a little weary of the cardigan and pencil skirt look on her. I'd like to see her make more of a statement, like the red dress she wore to the first visit to the White House after the election. LOVED THAT. maybe not appropriate for his visit, but something in that same vein would be wonderful.
ReplyDeleteJust for an opposing point of view, the Project Rungay guys did not like this outfit at all:
ReplyDeletehttp://projectrungay.blogspot.com/2009/04/shelley-o-watch.html
Thanks anony@239! I suspected I should just order up to be safe :) I think I will.
ReplyDeleteI love the sweater, but not with that skirt. The combination didn't do it for me, but she otherwise looks great and stands out. I never wear black to formal events for the same reason, a bit of color pops in the sea of LBDs.
ReplyDeleteRe: dazzling dots skirt sizing. It fits smaller than their other pencil skirts. Their size 2 usually is a bit loose on me but this one fits a bit tighter. It also has no stretch in it and because the material is a bit shiny it shows every little bumps more than their other pencil skirts. Whether you need to size up depends on how JCrew's pencil skirts usually fits you. If your regular size is a snug fit you might want to size up. Otherwise your normal size would fit fine but maybe just a bit tighter. hth
ReplyDeleteI just checked getty images, and there is a picture of what Michelle is wearing for meeting the Queen. She is wearing a black cardigan with white or cream shirt or shell, a black poufy skirt, pearl necklace. Not sure about the outfit.
ReplyDeleteThe FLOTUS should not be the center of attention, she should leave the sparkles and shiny jacquard for play dates not a meeting with the Prime Minister and his appropriately dressed wife.
ReplyDeleteWhat cardigan is that?
ReplyDelete^4:19
ReplyDeleteMe.
Ow.
OT but one quick question. If an item in the final sale section does not have the red "final sale item" attached to it when put to the shopping bag or during checkout. Does that mean that it is not doing to show as a final sale item on your order? Trying to decide if I should go ahead and order. Thanks.
ReplyDeleteI don't love it and I don't hate it. I guess I just don't care for the combination of the two pieces paired together. I will say the skirt color is refreshing which is nice for spring.
ReplyDeleteLove the style choice. It speaks retro/old school in a very "now" kinda way. And that mint green is fab on her. Just fab.
ReplyDeleteI love her outfit! I wish I could get away with wearing a mint green skirt in my job.
ReplyDeleteI agree with iowa girl that her outfit for meeting the Queen is.. well.. not as great.
It's a real coup for the First Lady to be spotted wearing J.Crew. I really hope, though, that JC matches her class and refrains from trumpeting this themselves.
ReplyDeleteOther sources (such as this blog and the LA Times) are already getting the word out. They don't need to shout if from the rooftops themselves like they've done every other time. If I was her I'd stop wearing JC if they make such a big embarrassing deal every time.
Anon 4:19: ditto.
ReplyDeleteLovely as usual. I love that cardi!!
ReplyDeleteIs her fab style DIY or does she have a stylist?
I've been following the MO coverage all day. The dd skirt/constellation cardi was for an informal meeting with the PM's wife before they both toured a cancer center. Her outfit was springlike and no doubt uplifting to the patients.
ReplyDeleteShe wore a Jason Wu satin coat and Isobel Toledo satin dress to tea with the Queen and her later evening dinner & opera. She wore a black JCrew cashmere cardigan over the Toledo dress with the Queen. The dress is black & cream and deceptively simple, but very chic-hard get a full impact in the pictures.
Since none of today's activities are state events, there is no requirement for that type of formality. Even the meeting with the Queen was of the less formal variety. Her outfits are on par with the other participants of the day.
http://www.etonline.com/gallery/obamafashion/2009/04/70317/index.html?photo=2
ReplyDeleteI think she looks great!
Has anyone been able to use their 25% off "red" card to place a phone order??
ReplyDeleteI think the word is getting out that she wears J Crew to make it look like she is not spending huge sums of money on upscale designer labels in these economic times. She is dressing like everyday people.
ReplyDeleteOops! now I'm hearing the black cardigan was not JCrew, but Azzedine Alaia.
ReplyDeleteFor those who asked about fit, I find this skirt TTS. I am normally a size 2, and that's what I ordered. It fits perfectly, not too tight at all.
ReplyDeleteI just received the Pansy jacquard pencil skirt, it is so darling! Size 2, fits TTS, very flattering. I can't wait to wear it!
The dd skirt is a lovely concept, but it shows every lump and bump - even on the model. That aside, I give the outfit a thumbs down. The cardi OR the skirt, but not both together. Too much glitter and flash. Making up for a lack of substance?
ReplyDeleteAnd yes, what is up with the hair!
I think it's one thing to dress like everyday people and another when you're meeting at the G-20. First off, her outfit looks pitiful. Who is doing her styling? She is literally BULDGING out of that cardigan. The skirt is totally off. But whatever, the other countries don't take us seriously, so it's probably proper that she went as a clown.
ReplyDelete@Julia: The lighter fontana dresses are not sheer. All the fontanas I have (and I have 4) come with a cotton "slip" kind of thing underneath the actual wrap dress. I have the dress in white and shell, and neither one are see through at all. Hope this helps!
ReplyDeleteMichelle Obama looks great and utterly appropriate giving everything was informal. It wasn't a state visit to QEII, just tea & crumpets and, from what I've read, the Obamas gave E an Ipod while E gave them a picture of her & her husband.
ReplyDeleteI love that MO wears colors rather than just go with black, dark blue, etc. Her and Mrs. Sarkozy, Carla Bruni, have terrific style in my opinion.
They gave the queen an iPod? Are they out of the DVD box sets? LOL
ReplyDeleteHeh heh, yes, I think they realized zone 1 dvds do not make a good present after giving them to the Browns. The Ipod had video of QEII's visit to her country's former colony in 2007.
ReplyDeleteI wonder if MO got a red card? :-)
The Obama's also need to brush up on worldy world etiquette. They just don't seem to gave a damn about those kind of things. I don't know why. LOL, anon, I know what you mean...was Best Buy all out?
ReplyDeleteShe makes me sick.
ReplyDeleteMore photos here
ReplyDeletehttp://www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-1166336/The-ladies-fashion-Michelle-Obama-Sarah-Brown-set-style-standard-G20-wives.html
When the ladies are sitting you can see the skirt lining peek out from under the J.Crew skirt. Typically that is a sign of poor construction or improper fit (too small).
Scroll halfway down the page for the "magic pants" comment and unflattering photo. The earlier poster has it right. That skirt will show everything. May as well wear white leggings. The cardi is really riding up and spreading out over the middle too. And her expression is like, I won't say what I'm thinking because that is just not polite. Not that I look perfect all the time, I'm just saying...
At least in the photos where they are having tea the ladies look like they are also having a good time.
I think a lot of us would have to brush up on "worldly world etiquette." I've no idea what it means. Perhaps you could enlighten us?
ReplyDeleteboy, sometimes it's hard to understand why women are accused of being catty.
ReplyDeleteI don't know anyone who touts working out as much as she does...yet, wears Spanx. Hahaha. Her stylist is...probably her mom.
ReplyDelete"I's all wrong...said" you are absolutely right and thank you for your bold statement!
ReplyDeleteAlso anon 5:03 dressing down like us everyday people good one!
This comment has been removed by the author.
ReplyDeleteI would love to hear the reaction from all these Republicans if anyone said these kinds of things about Laura Bush.
ReplyDeleteThanks, anon 5:44. It's one thing to stick up for someone because of their title, it's another to based criticism on facts. I'm glad some of the people on this blog aren't in her position, otherwise we'd be in some big trouble.
ReplyDeleteAnon 5:56, Laura Bush didn't exude a lack of class when it came to appearances.
ReplyDeleteVote Democratic, it's easier than working!
To the person who said she was bulging out of that cardigan -- um, WHAT?
ReplyDeleteanon 5:59, yes, buldging. i guess if you don't think so, maybe you should consider sizing up yourself. i'd hate to hear what the women in the office are saying behind the fat rolls on your back.
ReplyDeleteAnon 5:59 -- thanks for the nuanced policy discussion. Talk to me when you've got substance on why Michelle Obama is such an awful person.
ReplyDeleteOk, well, you don't even know how to *spell* bulging, so I'm not quite ready to trust your judgment.
ReplyDeleteShe's rockin those Jc pieces! She has a great figure for that pencil skirt. Yay ~ go Michelle!
ReplyDeleteUh, no one said she was awful in nature, ethics or morals. I think she's wonderful in being a good role models to women everywhere. She's just not good at picking her clothes. READ. COMPREHEND IT. THINK ABOUT IT. READ IT AGAIN. THEN TYPE IT.
ReplyDeleteI think she looks great! I love the skirt. So fresh and springy:)
ReplyDeleteAnon 5:59 you have violated the rules of the blog with a personal attack and as an honorable person should remove your comment.
ReplyDeleteInteresting that wearing a pencil skirt and sweater = CLASSLESS! But calling someone you've never seen fat, anonymously on a blog = ? You really reinforce all those wonderful stereotypes about Republicans.
ReplyDeletemore photos, that is crazy about everything showing under that skirt. I noticed in the 'rear shot' that you can see the outline of her bum and thighs. And all the wrinkles and scrunching up in the magic-pants shot. Never mind whatever is underneath. :O Definite no-no IRL, never mind to an event with photos broadcast round the world. SU on the skirt and have it tailored.
ReplyDeleteAnd pushing up the cardi sleeves, ugh. So unladylike. :(
I've one of the anons who made a couple of comments - on the CLOTHING CHOICES. I don't know Mrs. O and I'm not making a comment on her personally. We could pick someone off the street and I would give an honest opinion on their outfit, too. My comments are not intended to be personal and I'm not making a comment about you or your political choice, just the clothes. I would style her differently. If you would not, then you can say so and maybe you already have.
ReplyDelete^Um yes, this is not a political blog, it is about J.Crew. Keep your comments to J.Crew or clothing in general.
ReplyDeleteCan't we all just get along?
I don't think this is about politics. People just like to make THAT the issue, rather than the issue at hand. If Laura Bush were wearing that, I'd say it was ugly. If you wore that, and took a picture of it and you were looking a little too pudge in the outfit, I would say the same thing. It's the OUTFIT.
ReplyDeleteI thought bugling was funnier. I almost spewed wine on my laptop. It's like da-da-daah (bugle sound), here I am, bursting out. LOL
ReplyDeleteOk, so it wasn't bugling. That was just me. and my wine. :\
ReplyDeleteAnon 6:14 - You are the voice of reason. Yes it is about the clothes and that is it. Seems some of her political supporters are not as gracious as you.
ReplyDeleteLOL- sorry, I can't spell today.
ReplyDeleteI will learn to spell "bulge" correctly.
I will learn to spell "bulge" correctly.
I will learn to spell "bulge" correctly.
I will learn to spell "bulge" correctly.
I will learn to spell "bulge" correctly.
Laura Bush was no style icon, fair enough. She dressed demurely, very understated and always appropriate, which suited her style. Michelle Obama takes some risks but seems to be true to herself - we've seen a lot of pencil skirts and cardis, which is a look many of us love ourselves. When she's on, she's a knockout. When she's off, not so much. Now who among us cannot relate to that?!
ReplyDeleteHaha, anon 6:20, I'm NOT even drinking and I can't spell.
ReplyDeleteI know, it's funny how people like to throw out the political card when convenient. I didn't vote for them, but for my sake and my children's sake, I hope they succeed...even if they wear potato sacks.
^um, 6:21, did you read this thread? MO's detractors haven't exactly defined grace.
ReplyDeleteDuh. - we may just learn to love potato sacks yet, the way the economy is going. hahaha.
ReplyDeleteI was referring specifically anon 6:14's comments where grace is concerned - not the thread.
ReplyDelete-anon 6:21 :)
Thanks Anon 6:33. It's good to know there are at least 2 of us that see the bigger picture.
ReplyDeleteYou're on a shopping blog. It's not like you're seeing the bigger picture that clearly
ReplyDeleteWe are already there, wasn't the potato sack in the back of the inaugural coat?
ReplyDeleteI know, anon, it's a shopping blog. About clothing. Not about politics. Geezus. What's your email so that we can go through this one on one, rather than block up this blog?
ReplyDeleteI realize that bringing up politics here is natural considering this post is about *First Lady* Michelle Obama. ;)
ReplyDeleteHowever, can we keep the conversation to her outfit and clothing choices? It is really distracting to read negative comments being thrown at either party.
And even though some of us are Republicans, Democrats, and Independents, I think we can all agree that we are pro-J.Crew! :)
Alexis is deleting comments again. Go J.Crew Regulator
ReplyDeleteAnon at 6:59 PM: I suggest you read my note above the comment box before you type comments where it states "However, please note that comments that are considered inappropriate (e.g. obscene, racist, homophobic, personal attacks) will be removed."
ReplyDeleteI do my best to keep up with the moderation of comments. I can't please everyone, but I am trying my best.
:)
Okay its all wrong...or should I say Sarah Palin? Why the attacks? You either like it or you didn't...stop being catty.
ReplyDeleteI am anon 6:59 pm. It's hard to detect someone's meaning on this blog. I didn't mean it to offend. Just glad you did what you had to do. :) It's best you do regulate this board...some of us are like runaway trains.
ReplyDeleteAnon at 6:59 & 7:20 PM: Thank you for understanding- I really do appreciate it!!! I also apologize if I misinterpreted the comment. :)
ReplyDeleteHi all,
ReplyDeleteUmmm... What just happened? I went afk for a few hours & came back to... Well, not exactly the aficionada posts I was expecting.
Anywho, I just wanted to send a big "Thank you" to Alexis for stepping in. As always, glad to see you. Most esp. glad to see a return to the general topic.
Hope all is well w. everyone and all your Jcrew finds are fabulous!
Heather:D
Heather:D: Thanks! :) Also, thanks for sharing with us that Jcrew is opening the Los Gatos B&M store in CA soon. That is very exciting news for all those in the area! :)
ReplyDeleteIt would be hilarious to know if MO got a red card.
ReplyDeleteThe anons are off the hook. It's like one person with 10 kooky voices all fighting with each other. You should at least pick a name before you come out swinging from your corner. At least we could follow along properly.
ReplyDeletelilac cupcake - I don't feel that the dazzling dots is tighter than other pencil skirts. I took a 4 in the sateen pencil skirt, this year's denim pencil skirt & the gladiola print pencil skirt. I liked the dazzling dots in a 4 and didn't consider going up or down to check for different fit. I am reviewing the skirt tomorrow and invite you to my blog to have a look.
I have tried several pencil skirts from J Crew. I sized up in the dazzling dots skirt. It's more similar to the "higher waist" pencil skirts. I just ordered one too!!! (they didn't have my size in the store) Hopefully they won't be sold out by the time the order goes through!!! :P
ReplyDeleteHi again Alexis,
ReplyDeleteThanks for the shout out. I'm looking forward to the new B&M. Most esp because Los Gatos is:
1)Closer to home (fewer "Honey, why are we down to 1/2 a tank on the car when I filled it just last night" situations)
2)A great town -Los Gatos has a lot of charm & the main street is a fun mix of shops cafes etc.
3)Larger- Hopefully they will have plenty of space for all the new jcrew goodies that I won't be able to resist.
Maybe I'll spend the next few days learning how to take pictures on my phone so I can upload at least a few exterior shots. No promises tho', I'm mechanically declined.
Hope y'all found some lovely treasures in your local jcrew!
Heather:D
I love pencil skirts, love, love, love them. Wear them 50% or more of the time. My beef with J.crew is that they don't offer them in petites, so I often have to have them shortened so they hit at the knee. For that reason, I tend only to buy j.crew's offerings if I really, really love the skirt.
ReplyDeleteAnon at 7:45 PM: LOL! I agree with you, if she got one that would be hysterical. And *if* she did not get one, that would be pretty funny too. ;)
ReplyDeleteHeather:D: Closer to home is always good! This way its easier to make more trips to J.Crew. ;)
The anons that are commenting are not one person but many. Some are talking about not liking Mrs. O's clothing selections others are attacking those bloggers with political spears.
ReplyDeleteThanks gigiofca! I am looking forward to your review :) I ended up ordering both my normal size and a size up just in case. I will return whichever I don't like. I tend to carry weight in my hips/thighs, so I wanted to be sure I got the right fit. I will post about my thoughts on fit after it arrives.
ReplyDeleteBTW - I just checked the mail, and I received a J.Crew catalog with a $25 off $125 purchase card in it, good til April 19. It is only good in stores, and does NOT include red phone purchases. A nice offer, but since I already received a red card, I won't be using it. I will gladly mail it to the first JCA who emails me at lilac.cupcake@gmail.com :)
ReplyDeleteJ'adore These Stores did a nice review of the pencil skirt awhile ago for those looking for a review:
ReplyDeletehttp://jadorethesestores.blogspot.com/2009/03/jcrew-dazzling-dots-pencil-skirt-review.html
The card is taken!
ReplyDeleteI think she looks great as she usually does in my opinion. I know one thing that skirt is a hard one to pull off with Spanks etc. I recall many reviews were it showed lumps and bumps in the mid section.
ReplyDeleteI like that is very confident, smart and her own person. Not to mention she has a toned and great body for a woman of any age.
I LOVE Michelle Obama. I actually like the ensemble on her! I wouldn't have picked it for me, but on her it is GREAT. LOVE the cardigan! Chic, modern, beautiful. I don't understand why anyone should complain about her hips! She is a woman and hips usually come with being a woman! (My brother *loves* hips.) I have to agree. Her figure is very toned and she celebrates her curves. I am thankful for women like MO and Beyonce and others who have 'pear' shapes and look totally gorgeous and comfortable in their own skin. How refreshing!
ReplyDeleteJenG
I like that M.O. takes risks (as much as we can say anyone in politics takes fashion risks). I feel, sometimes, though, that the clothes she chooses do not flatter her figure. It's almost like she's wearing someone else's clothes. Also, not sure if I like the pearls with that look, esp. so close to the neck. Well, that's just my own two cents.
ReplyDeleteWe are all stuck with the body that we are born 99% of the time. Short people can't make themselves tall, hippy women can't lose the hips, long limbed women cannot shorten their limbs etc.
ReplyDeleteI think its wonderful to embrace and celebrate the best you that you can be. Screw trying to be what others think you should be when they should be worrying about themselves and their own simple life. I do not believe in the one size fits all mental and it seems like MO doesn't either.
Go MO! When one of us becomes the first lady then we can really talk!
When does Los Gatos officially open??? That will be closest to home *squeal*
ReplyDeleteWell the skirt is almost sold out, item # 11804. They only have a size 6 and 4. I was planning on getting this skirt before Michelle wore it.I guess I shouldnt have waited for the red card to come in the mail...
ReplyDeletethis was nice...but I think she sometimes dresses too casual like the skirt and cardigan to meet the queen she needs to pull out some suits
ReplyDeleteIf you watched the news last night, CNN showed other world leaders wifes meeting the queen dressed casually. However, she really needs to tone down showing her bare arms in situations that require wearing a suit i.e. Capital Hill, she stood out like a sore thumb that evening.
ReplyDeleteHey Bri,
ReplyDeleteAccording to the email, the Los Gatos store is due to open Tues the 14th. I wish I could cut & paste a copy of the note - but my tech skills are poor. Sorry :}.
Anywho, the note says:
JCREW
ARRIVING SOON
Tuesday April 14th
Mark your calendar - we have great things in store (and a special offer is on it's way)
JCREW 105 North Santa Cruz Ave
Los Gatos CA
Then it goes on into the tiny legalise that my poor brain is unwilling to process.
Not sure why they're scheduling the opening on a weekday. I have a feeling most JCAs will (like me) visit ASAP on the weekend.
Hope that's helpful,
Heather:D
Heather, thank you! Marked on calendar, and I hope to drop by after work on the 14th :) Yes, strange to have the opening on a Tuesday. Thanks again!
ReplyDeleteHi Bri,
ReplyDeleteYou're welcome. I get such great advice & tips from this site. Glad to have a chance to pay it forward.
Hope to hear about the new store :}

I'm not a fan of this look. Is it me, or does she look uncomfortable in this outfit?
ReplyDeleteThe news showed video of Mrs. Obama in the constellation sweater outside. It is a very pretty, sparkly sweater. Too bad it isn't more affordable.
ReplyDeleteCute but too casual for meeting with the PM's wife. Funny, I bought that skirt and couldn't find anything that went with it. Now I know.
ReplyDeleteThough I am not a fan of her or her husband politcally, I think it's great that she's adding a littly youthful fun and great colors with her wardrobe. However, I always think her clothes are ill-fitting and need tailoring.
