J.Crew's Fall 2009 Collection For Men {part 2}

In some previous posts ("J.Crew's Fall 2009 Collection For Men" & "J.Crew's Newest Arrivals For Fall 2009 {yey!}"), several images of the Fall 2009 Collection for Men were shown.

A big "thanks!" to J.Crew Guy in Canada who found additional images of the Men's Fall 2009 Collection at the Mister Mort blog (click here). The blog also shares the following:

I like what J Crew is up to. and don't front. We've all been in there-been for a minute. I enjoy a pinstripe with a solid grey.. Very "Morning Suit for taking a stroll to the bank". Theyre teaching guys it doesnt have to be precious.. Loro Piana fabrics! Thomas Mason shirtings! i mean this is the stuff royalty has their clothes made of but they offer it to the general public with no seals of the queen or anything.. These are the shirtings Turnbull and Thom Browne use!

There is also a pair of painted khakis in the upcoming collection (click on image for larger view). I don't know what J.Crew was thinking when they decided to include this piece in the collection. When I think of J.Crew, I do not think of sloppy (and these pants s-c-r-e-a-m sloppy to me!) ...And I just know these pants won't be priced at $30, but around $80 or more. ;)

What are your thoughts on the latest pieces slated for Fall 2009? Do you like or dislike? ;) What are you hoping to see in Fall 2009? Are you a fan of the painted khakis? Do you like the look? :)

  1. Those painted khakis will probably be, like, $138. Real artists don't need to buy these, they already have the real deal, and real artists/ painters/ workers are the only people who should be allowed to wear paint splattered pants.

  2. oh pleeese anyone can wear anything they want don't be overdramatic.

  3. Yeah, they CAN wear whatever they want, including rumpled khakis with strategic paint splatters, but they'll look like a pretentious tool. JCrew is trying to sell a certain lifestyle with these pieces, and I have to give this attempt a big eyeroll. And that's my non-anonymous opinion (no, I'm not a painter).

  4. Those pants are really bad. I believe they have been discussed on this blog before but in the jeans fabric.

Also, as far as the ladies. What is the deal with the perma wrinkle on their new cotton poppy jacket. It really ruins the whole jacket. I am returning mine. Sad:( but I don't like to look sloppy and wrinkled.

  5. If I wanted overpriced paint-splattered pants, I'd dig in my closet and pull out my Abercrombie pants from about 6 years ago.

  6. Just a thought here: Does anyone think the fall lines will struggle a bit in 2009? My thought is that a lot of people loaded up on fall and winter clothes when retailers were giving the stuff away with codes like "HOHOHO" and the like. I, for one, do not NEED any more fall/winter clothes. Or, will things have recovered enough where consumers will start falling back to their old practices and buying clothing because they like it, and not so much because they need it?

  7. Like most of you I think the painted pants are a bad idea. Maybe some people like the look, but it's definitely something I'll pass on.

For the most part the clothing looks to continue what they have been doing for the past few seasons. Most likely I'll add to what I already have, but no need to do a total wardrobe overhaul.

  8. Ryan, I think that the fall 2009 lines will definitely struggle. I, too, do not need anymore fall or winter clothing because I was able to get some really cheap stuff this year, like blazers for $40 and sweaters for $20. It will be interesting to see what happens.

Tastymoog has it right about the pants. Anyone who would actually buy those... well, they will definitely look like a pretentious tool. They are so Abercrombie 6 years ago too, I chuckled at that one. And if you wanted the look wouldn't it be more fun to make your own? And cheaper?

The other new guys stuff does look nice. I love to see a man wearing J.Crew!

  9. So we've been talking about J Crew cheaping out lately? Are these pants not the biggest cheapout of all? They probably picked up a bunch of brown men's pants at the dump, splattered them with paint, sewed in a J Crew label, and yeah - I'd be surprised if they were offered a penny below $118.

They just dont' seem to get it - that just because people have less money right now doesn't mean they want to look cheaper, dirtier, and more falling-apart-ier!

  10. I will add a positive comment: I like the fisherman cardigan. JC usually seems to get those right. I would buy that for my bf... and then 'borrow' it all the time. :D

  11. Fall is going to suffer. US economy seemed to be on the upswing but if the swine flu has anything to do with it...it could cause even more economic woes for the US. An even bigger downturn could be on the horizon.

  12. I doubt the fall line is in trouble. Everyone is clamoring for "color"...to they'll sell the most popular items from the spring/summer line-up in a more substantial fabric that is colorful. We're addicts. We're suckers. We'll fall for it. I got my rewards card to prove it!!! ;)

  13. Weren't the painted jeans something like $385 or some ridiculous price? I seem to recall that it was a major eyeroll for me too tasymoog. Same reaction with the khakis.

  14. anon 10:07: The swine flu is global, and so is the economic downturn.

The Fall 2009 is ugly womens and mens. Between J Crews' quality issues, and price points, they will suffer.

Yes, the swine flu is becoming global but was just reading an article out today on how it directly affects the US economy.

  16. Ya Mary, some people will spend regardless. Others are cutting back because they have to or because they are more cautious with their spending. We've already seen a decline in spring inventory as the calendar moves forward. Not with everything, sure, but some things are selling out fast and they are items seldom discussed here. I have had to do 3 Find It requests in April alone. My size and color - sold out online in a matter of weeks.

I don't know that I'd say the line is "in trouble" but I bet they have revised their earnings forecast for the second half of 2009.

Personally, I could probably make it through life with the copious quantity of clothing I already own, but I buy at least one new winter coat from J.Crew each year and will most likely do the same in 2009. Along with some new cords, skirts, shirts, accessories, etc. Just not nearly as much as I bought in 2008. Partly because I doubt we will see the same incredible deals and promos of last winter. It was fun but things are changing...

  17. Yes, the swine flu and economic downturn are global.

J.Crew is a U.S. company with the market mainly in the U.S. They aren't as likely to be affected by the economic downturn in Germany or the swine flu outbreak in Mexico.

  18. Like what I've seen so far. I buy a fair bit of JCrew for my husband and he loves it. The classic fisherman's sweater, corduroy blazer, colorful sweaters and scarves are nice. We definitely are more fall/winter buyers so I look forward to the new season. After we've had time to enjoy summer, of course.

  19. I bought plenty for my hubby the past two years so I doubt I will be buying anything this fall season. He has plenty he recently said!

    ReplyDelete
  20. Not the paint splattered pants again!!! I think my husband would like the fisherman's sweater. He bought two the last time J. Crew had them and regreted not buying more.

  21. Completely OT - but has anyone seen the poplin cargo jacket IRL? I am interested in the bronzed sand color, but am wondering if the color is quite as bright and squashy as it looks on my monitor. I don't have a B&M to go see...

  22. I love, love, love the suit outfit shown at the top left of this post, but wouldn't be attracted to a man wearing the painted pants unless he was actually painting. (i mean, it just looks like someone is taking a little too much effort when wearing altered items that don't look natural).

    ReplyDelete
  23. I also like the button-up sweater or sweater vest under a suit jacket. It's different from what I normally see in my ultra-conservative work environment where it is a challenge to be creative. One of the senior guys wore a burnt orange shirt once and people talked about it for days. It's not easy to feel different from the rest of the clones.

  24. I went to art schools(highschool, college, graduate) and all my friends who did oil painting wore aprons or something. And we never went anywhere in those types of clothing in public. When I wear smock or apron, nothing gets on my clothes underneath so painted clothes are not real for artists/painters.

  25. I've also done some WFIFYs, with good success, on things that have sold out online.

    ReplyDelete
  26. I'm with tastymoog. The painted khakis are lame, esp if the paint pattern is the same on every pair. Can you imagine walking down the street and seeing someone else w/the same ones on?

I agree w/Ryan & others that I have enough fall clothing from the great promos. However, I will probably still buy a few special pieces. Esp ones in special colors. Fall colors are usually the most beautiful.

    ReplyDelete
  27. i'm sorry, but i think it's ridiculous for anyone on this blog to say that the company is going to be in "trouble" for the fall. don't you think that they are aware of all of the issues you keep pointing out? quality? the economy? i highly doubt that anyone on this blog can predict the future, and knows how to run j. crew better than the people in charge.

also, people will always buy fall clothes. there were all kinds of crazy sales and promos at the end of summer last year, and i'm pretty sure people are still buying new things.

  28. Dear Anon @ 3:03:

Relax. No one said J. Crew was going to be in trouble. The chatter has merely regarded whether a particular line/season would struggle after the deep discounts offered by its predecessors.

And, as you point out, of course "people will always buy fall clothes." The topic of this discussion has merely been to what degree they will spend.

Before you prop up your soap box, take the time to read what others have said.

People and more and more of them are loosing their jobs and also people are going on shopping bans like never before.

You need to calm down and accept that the world is a different place for Most people. Congrats if you are doing just fine.

    ReplyDelete
  30. 3:03 - none of us are trying to run J.Crew, we are just discussing what we think will be the situation and how one of our favorite retailers will respond.

Here's to open dialogue, it can be quite interesting.

  31. These pants are for people that are into 'afternoon delight with the handyman' fantasies.

Hey, you should see what they pay for their latex outfits.

    ReplyDelete
  32. I will be not be purchasing any fall clothes this year, bad economy.

    ReplyDelete
  33. I'll be buying the $195 hand-painted limited edition Jack Purcells...just kidding.

  34. JC has been hitting out of the park lately w/ re to the men's collection. I am a loyal JC shopper and I know I am satisfied. My favorites:

    * Selima Rivington sunglasses (get mine in the mail tomorrow - they've lowered the price from $325 to $250.)

    * Urban slim fit chinos (much more tailored/slim fit than the Classic)

    * The V-neck tees

    * Timex Military watch (got it for Christmas.)

I don't know who is responsible for all of this @ JC - but thank you!

P.S. Intrigued by the new Ludlow suit. Can't wait to check it out.

  35. I doubt JC = sell'g pant w/ paint on them. Was probably just a show-piece.

  36. Hi -

Can i get some thoughts on the Sperry Suede Bost shoes? http://www.jcrew.com/AST/Browse/MensBrowse/Men_Shop_By_Category/shoes/loafersoxfords/PRDOVR~13507/99101692132/13507.jsp

I don't usually think suede when I think of boat shoes...but these seem pretty hot.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Anon @ 12:28:

I prefer JC's boots to their boat shoes. But, style is all about personal preference; so, to each his (or her) own.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Honestly, I absolutely HATE the direction J.Crew is going in! I hte the sequins and the ripped, paint splattered and wrinkled clothing! I say go back to the clean, classic "preppy" look. I miss the madras!!!!!!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  39. Hey anonymous, I have the Sperry boots you're asking about. They're definitely more city than dock. They are nubuck, so they should stand up better than suede. I still prefer my four year old desert boots to these, but the Sperry are very popular right now.

Not too sure if I'd wear them with shorts, but they are great with chinos and jeans.

Not was comfortable as trainers, but a fun shoe for weekends.
