JCA "Help Style Me!" Weekly Post

This is the weekly "Help Style Me!" post, where we can share items we are having trouble putting outfits together with. Elaine (in this post) says it best, "You know, that thing you bought because you love it and you keep pulling it out and then putting it away without wearing it?"

Please share your J.Crew item (either that you own or are thinking about getting) that you would love help creating an outfit with.

Also, please help out by offering your styling advice. Feel free to include links to your blog (where you incorporated that piece) or to Polyvore (where you showcased an outfit with that piece). Thanks in advance! :)

  1. I recently bought the Ball skirt in gingham (G3505). Please share ideas on how to style. I can't decided if I want to keep it even after getting in hemmed. Where would you wear this? Thanks!

  3. Rynetta has a lot of great images on her instagram showing how and where she wears similar JCrew skirts.

She also has a recent blog post, "Candid Conversations: Where to Wear It", that may be helpful to you.

That is a beautiful skirt! I hope you can find a way to wear and enjoy it.

    3. I agree with Uninown here. I've decided to stop buying special occasion clothing unless I'm shopping for a specific event because I now have too much. My goal is to actually wear these items for any upcoming events so I can get some use.

  4. Rynetta's article is why I bought it! But now I'm nervous to wear. Thanks for the vote of confidence- I'm trying to step out of my comfort zone a bit.

  5. Hi Lisa! I'd encourage you to wear it, especially since it's been altered. Do you wear denim jackets? If so, a denim jacket and a t-shirt dresses the skirt down. It's a gorgeous skirt. Wear it with confidence!!!!!

  6. Being cotton, I would feel fine wearing that skirt anywhere. I am considering it, but I'm not sure I have anything beyond tees for pairing.

  7. I love to wear different and unique clothing. I have lots of fun and interesting pieces in my closet, but you have to feel comfortable in your clothes or it will look like the clothes are wearing you. Saying, "you can wear it anywhere" is unhelpful. You have to analyze your own life and see if there are situations where you would feel comfortable and pretty and happy in that outfit.

I love the skirt, but I didn't buy it. It's quite cute, but it's not right for me. I have a full, active life, but I tend to wear different styles than that dress and couldn't see it fitting in to my concert / farmer's market / dinner at friends house / beach / sporting events life.

Also, clothing is meant to be worn several times and lived it. It is not a costume. If you can't see yourself wearing it more than once or twice, pass on it. Unless you have some sort of very specific event -- "cousin Sally's wedding in Sonoma," or unless you've thought up 10 places where you'll wear it, pass on it.

    1. Excellent advice, blakemdjohns. I love beautiful clothes and I (still) love J. Crew, but instagram is not real life, and I have too many mistakes in my closet already from forgetting what you said.

    2. Right, IG promotes a strong mentality of NEW, NEW, NEW in order to create new content, which encourages people to buy things that they might not otherwise. If you have the disposable income and enjoy shopping and clothing there's absolutely nothing wrong with that. But if you're trying to pare down your closet or finances it can be dangerous! I know I start to feel overwhelmed when my closet is exploding with stuff I hardly wear. I feel so much calmer now when I open my closet in the morning now that I have purged out things that don't really go with my lifestyle and have easier access to things that I need for my daily life (nice professional clothing 5 days a week, casual wear I feel comfortable in on the weekends, and a few special occasion pieces for special events).

    3. I'm switching to a new job in a few days and have been really paring down my wardrobe a lot. I had things from 10 years ago and suit styles have changed dramatically since then. Cass, like you I want to have nice professional clothing 5 days a week, casual wear, and special occasion pieces. It's definitely a process. I plan to keep the skirt and follow Rynetta's advice and wear with a jean jacket to Ravinia. So excited!

    4. Oh, that sounds perfect @LisaThompson. I hope you have a great time!
And, congrats on the new job.

    5. Lisa, I go to Ravinia all the time and I think the skirt is perfect for an event there. Have fun!

  9. Hi- going on a cruise to the Bahamas for first time. Will bring a couple of casual factory pieces. I don't want to pack too much stuff as I'll have 3 kids to watch after. Anybody who's been on cruise have suggestions for wardrobe preparation? I heard perhaps picking a color theme might help. Thanks!
