JCA "Help Style Me!" Weekly Post

This is the weekly "Help Style Me!" post, where we can share items we are having trouble putting outfits together with. Elaine (in this post) says it best, "You know, that thing you bought because you love it and you keep pulling it out and then putting it away without wearing it?"

Please share your J.Crew item (either that you own or are thinking about getting) that you would love help creating an outfit with.

Also, please help out by offering your styling advice. Feel free to include links to your blog (where you incorporated that piece) or to Polyvore (where you showcased an outfit with that piece). Thanks in advance! :)

  1. Subject: "popovers"

I love the way the J Crew popovers look on others and they are often available in very nice patterns/fabrics. But I have tried a few sizes in both petite and regular sizing and they don't seem to look right on me - regardless of whether I go for a more trim look or a more relaxed fit. I wear the button ups frequently but somehow popovers look very different on me. Do they require a certain body type to look good? I am relatively fit (but not scrawny); however, I am short (5 ft). Any thoughts? Thank you!

    1. Popovers never look good on me because I am quite chesty, to put it mildly. You are not alone! I own one and often wear it under Tippi sweaters.

    2. same re: popovers. There's always something off for me - probably the size of my chest! The length is never right on them - I have no problem with button downs but I also think popovers usually have less shape/structure so they end up hanging in an unflattering way on me.

    3. I always have to size up in them, otherwise I can't get them off. I like the look if it's loose and drapey as long as the shoulders work, but I always keep that in mind when I decide to order.

  2. I have several popovers and will only wear them tucked in (either a neat tuck into a pencil skirt, or a looser "half tuck" into pants). I can't seem to pull off a look with them untucked the way I can with a full button down.

    1. im opposite. i like to wear popovers as a tunic untucked. I actually think they are supposed to be worn that way. Normally when I wear a normal button down I can't do that bc it just looks too long... A littlg sick of all button downs now though. They are always too small in the chest. No matter what size!

  3. Does anybody own the Campbell blazer with ruffle trin in Edenhan floral? If so, how is the quality and is it fully lined? Is it lined in cotton? CS often gives me wrong info so I trust JCAs more :)

    1. Sartorial_choices reviewed it fairly recently (along with three other blazers) on her IG. It looked quite nice and if I recall correctly, she was pleased with the quality, details and weight of the item.

    2. I want to say I recall reading that this one isn't lined. The poppy and daisy one is lined (the newer one - it has a pretty pink pinstripe lining). I tried the Edenham floral one on at my store - they had one in the sale rack. The colors just aren't for me - it was very lightweight cotton.

    3. It is not fully lined. I think it is partially lined. The back definitely is not. I actually do not mind as my office is usually hotter then heck so it works as a nice light layer. It still lays well for me and I feel is worth the sale price.

    4. @anthro I have this blazer and it is very light weight. The sleeves are lined in poly, the lapels of the blazer, the flanks, and the shoulders in cotton. Half the back from mid thorax to the vents are not lined. I have no idea why. That being said, I still love the blazer. It is perfect in warmer weather. You really can't tell that it's not lined in the lower back when wearing. HTH!

    5. Thank you ladies! The partial lining is a dealbreaker for me, it's my pet peeve. Too bad because it looks lovely!

  4. off topic but I just noticed on the website when you're browsing the non-sale items you can now filter by size and color...woo hoo!

  5. I know this is off topic, but does anyone know if Madewell is offering any percentage off sale items? Thanks!

  6. My Tall Maddie pants finally arrived after being back-ordered for a few weeks. I liked the ankle length of the regular Maddies (I ordered the regular and tall at the same time to compare) but once the cold weather hits I won't be doing bare ankles. I'm 5'9", so the talls hit the top of my shoes with a slight break and cover the back of my shoe but don't cover the heel. I'm thinking this could be nice for winter as I could wear them with socks and loafers, but is this a look that's totally out of date? I'm late 40s and will be wearing them for teaching.

    1. I did a quick google image search, and uh, yeah, loafers and socks can look pretty amazing. 'women socks with loafers'. As I said before, I love the IDE of loafers, so this is kind of inspiring!

  8. Shopgrrrl if it feels right to you, then rock it. If it feels out of date or stodgy to YOU then let them go or try a new combo. I had Maddies Las fall/winter. They look best with heels, but those aren't practical for me most of winter. I often wore them with flat boots. I love the idea of loafers, but I personally think socks wouldn't work. I'd want to wear nylons, which wouldn't be very warm.

    1. Hi Sarah, thanks so much, I appreciate your thoughts. I'm returning to the workforce after a long SAHM career, and I'm trying to figure out what my look will be. I'm trying to plan everything around flats and low boots (like my beloved Parker boots, so great with skirts and dresses). I'm trying to do as you suggested and rock it as I see fit, but I get these nagging doubts sometimes.

    2. You're welcome, shopgrrrl. It sounds like a fun time to try new looks! Mistakes may be made :P I'm sure any combo can be fresh. Little details and colors can make all the difference. But if you love it, do wear it. Enjoy!
