JCA "Help Style Me!" Weekly Post

This is the weekly "Help Style Me!" post, where we can share items we are having trouble putting outfits together with. Elaine (in this post) says it best, "You know, that thing you bought because you love it and you keep pulling it out and then putting it away without wearing it?"

Please share your J.Crew item (either that you own or are thinking about getting) that you would love help creating an outfit with.

Also, please help out by offering your styling advice. Feel free to include links to your blog (where you incorporated that piece) or to Polyvore (where you showcased an outfit with that piece). Thanks in advance! :)

  1. Hi. I recently bought a silk Margot top F4442, as well as the pleated ruffle top in silk G1436 and pleated ruffle top in windowpane in cotton G0831.

Does anyone have experience with "pleat maintenance" after washing for these silk and cotton tops? (The care instructions say dry clean for the silk tops but based on previous advice, I was going to test for colorfastness and then try to wash at home rather than dry clean. And I cannot bear the thought of dry cleaning a washable cotton top.) Is the only way to maintain the pleats for both the silk and cotton top to dry clean or are there are any tips for maintaining the pleats after a wash?

I noticed that Frances (https://www.instagram.com/francesayme/) recently posted a picture of her washed and dried cotton Margot with pleats that need to be resuscitated. Maybe the pleats can be better maintained through laying flat to dry?

As I type this, I see I keep using variations of the word "maintain", which suggests "high maintenance", which suggests the tops maybe should not have a place in my life, but the final sale Gods have decreed otherwise, so I would appreciate any thoughts. Thank you!

    1. You can steam it. Paper silk like the Margot top, will be far more dicey to wash- the texture of the silk might change. But the cotton one should be fine to wash and iron & steam the pleats into place

    2. Hand wash is the way to go. Steaming or ironing after hanging to dry might help. You can always tack the pleats with little stitches so they stay in place. I wish there were an easier way! I'm allergic to dry cleaning so I wash everything and often have good results.

    3. I washed my striped cotton Margot, and ironed while still quite damp. The pleats are fine - not rumpled at all, but the striped fabric might be stiffer than the solid.

    4. I think you could get away with washing it (delicate cycle or hand wash) but it might be better to avoid the dryer. I wash quite a lot of dry cleaning only items 99% of the time with good results. Put them on a (plastic) hanger to dry, that way they keep their shape

  2. Has anybody seen the Belted Gingham Dress item G4801 in size 0 or 2 in pink at your store? Even though it is a full time item, given my last interaction with a store manager (on the vent thread) I am afraid to ask. It's the only thing tempting me from the new "style guide".

    1. Poshmark to the rescue! User londoncynth has a size 8 brushstroke floral for $40. It looks like it's mislabeled as a different print.

  4. I shared some of my favorite outfits for May on my blog, including styling of the poppy and daisy liberty floral blazer, oxford cotton tie neck top, bright blue Factory basketweave dress and the lace up suede sandals/deck stripe tee/pull on cargo pants. I'm also doing a summer wardrobe challenge in an effort to save up for fall and winter clothes!

    1. Great post, Anne! I'm really with you on the summer math, even though my winter clothes are bulkier, when I put them away, I can't seem to find enough room for all of my summer clothes. I know I have way, way too many, and I can't possibly wear everything in the short summer season (especially when this spring has been so cool and rainy!). I'm determined to shop my closet and enjoy all of my great buys without adding to them this year.

  5. I got the palm tree muscle tee in sequin today. Super cute, it's a little shorter than I remember from my store try on, but I think I was wearing high waisted shorts at the time.

I also got the high waisted tie front short in pink. My feelings are the same as with the black—love the shape, wish the bow was removable and wish the fabric was different. The pink is a fun color. Not sure it's great with my skin tone or if it would get enough wear. I think I'll try on with a few other things and see.

    1. I really appreciate how tapered they made the short. I have a pretty small waist compared to my hips and I didn't get a huge amount of gaping in waist. Normally I feel like JCrew cuts their clothing for a straighter shape.

    2. Agreed. The tie waist shorts fit more true to my form than most other J Crew shorts. I buy more of their skirts than shorts for that reason.
