"Looking to VENT" with J.Crew

This is the weekly "Looking to VENT with J.Crew" post, a place to share our not-so-stellar experiences with J.Crew.

If you have recently experienced a frustrating situation with J.Crew, maybe you might be willing to share that information with us in this post.

Please feel free to share your story on almost any topic— including poor experiences with purchases & orders, promotions/ offers, in-store visits, transactions with store associates, etc.

  1. Gigi posted the low price on the Swarovski necklace and bracelet on Monday. Both items had a red promo price and were in the sale section so when you typed the "Monday" code it took 40%. In the details section of the promo box it stated in the double asterisk section that items in the sale section would receive 40% off; the single asterisk section spoke of select items receiving 40% off. Anyway, I did a mock checkout, took a screen shot, and politely requested a pa on the open order that hadn't shipped.

This is the reply: "Although both the Swarovski Crystal Necklace and Swarovski Crystal Bracelet weren't eligible for the "MONDAY" promotion, I went ahead adjusted the prices for you as a one-time courtesy."

I thanked them for the pa, but replied it felt insulting to suggest I asked for a discount that wasn't there to begin with. I have the screen shot showing the discounted price as Gigi described on her blog. Ugh.

    1. I've had to correct them before and it's hilarious when someone comes back and says the previous person was confused. I'm like, what is there to be confused about. I laid it all out and provided pictures, can your customer services representatives not read or are they just hell bent on insulting customers?

    2. I think the CS reps are just trained to give customers the spiel about "a one time courtesy." That's not going to deter me from calling/emailing again, especially if I'm correct. However, I hear you re. the frustration with the whole process.

  2. New promo in Canada: $75 off $250+ or $175 off $500+, online only.* Use code DAYTHREE. Free shipping (yay!). Beware if you are a Canadian shopper though. Like in the past with this promo, they are still calculating the discount based on a US $ subtotal, not Canadian one and have not fixed this glitch yet. It means you will often find yourself getting the lower tiered discount when you go to check out online. You have to call them. The reimburse you the outstanding amount of the discount when it ships. That last part is my vent, though I did trust them on this and ordered a few things that popped back for me just now.

  4. This is so minor, but it is very annoying. I love J. Crew's cotton pajama pants. I have some from Boden that I like too, but they are a bit too warm and have pockets that are annoying when you sleep on your side. J. Crew's are my absolute favorite, though. The problem is that the waistbands almost all twist. It seems like it should be an easy and inexpensive fix (for them) to make them so this doesn't happen. It is really irritating. I have two pair of Liberty J. Crew pajama sets and even those waistbands have twisted.

    1. That's been a complaint of mine for a while too! My newer JC pajama pants (bought in last 2 years) do that and it is SO annoying. I was just looking at an old pair today, they have held up great and the waistband is NOT twisted inside the fabric channel. I checked the tag: holiday 2010! I won't be buying anymore Crew pajama bottoms. Wonder if the factory ones do that too?

  5. So thanks to free shipping and discounts and all that, I went ahead and ordered a skirt I kept going back and forth on. Order sat in released for a bit and then I noticed the size I ordered was showing as sold out. So I emailed CS asking if I was actually getting the skirt. They emailed me back saying no. That the inventory on the computer system hadn't caught up yet and I'd be receiving a cancellation email. She also suggested checking out the collection skirts since she couldn't find anything else similar to what I wanted. (which isn't true. There like three other skirts she could have suggested and that I might have bought instead) A few hours later I got an email saying my original skirt shipped.

So I'm glad I'm getting it (from a store so hopefully it's OK) but why is the inventory so out of whack? And why don't they know their own products?

  7. Has anyone else noticed how long orders take to ship out? I placed an order on the 3rd, one item shipped right away, and the other two are still "open" They are not sold out items, as they are still on the website, so I don't understand the hold up.

    1. The order that I placed on 11/30 shipped on 12/5 but hasn't yet been delivered. The order that I placed on 12/3 hasn't even shipped yet. I have never known JC to take so long.

    2. An order that I placed for Factory on 11/30 JUST shipped yesterday, 12/8, with an estimated arrival of 12/16. That's unbelievably slow. That's over a week just for processing. Ugh. Old Navy (who seems to never have their shipping sh*t together) even beats JCrew, as the order I placed with them on 11/30 shipped on 12/7.

    4. Egyptomaniac - I giggled when reading your comment about Old Navy. The last time I ordered from them, I received _completely_ different items. It's like they packaged someone else's order with my shipping label . . .

  8. I received my Cyber Monday order yesterday. I got 2 sweaters for me and 2 for my husband as a Christmas gift. I will probably send both of my items back as I was just 'blah' about them. I find most JCrew sweaters a hair too short for my 5'8'' frame. I wish they came in Tall sizes. I would really some beautiful jewel tones also - I'm tired of the cotton candy colors and various shades of brown.

    1. ITA, I'm only 5'5" but long-waisted and busty and I'm finding at least the in store sweater options too short...specifically the Holly and the perfect cable. The only other sweaters I'm interested are only available on-line and completely sold out (JCrew you might want to take note of what is sold out). I love a classic plaid blouse but the Stewart plaid and the red-tartan pop-over are repeats from a couple of years ago and I already own them. Wanted to love the ivory/gold foil dot blouse but the quality of the fabric/sheerness forced me to return it...I might reconsider on super sale. On the hunt for a new sparkly necklace but current jewelry options are atrocious imo. I've only kept a couple pairs of shoes (gold Biellas and tortoise Collins) and the Star Wars tee (size up) from the latest rollouts. IMO the vast majority of the holiday women's offerings are "blah" and I don't think I'm the only one. My store was empty last night afterwork (prime shopping hours) and their inventory was well stocked.

  9. Fairview mall Store in Toronto. Not a single pretty blouse or sweater to be found. All weekend-ish plaids, checks, sweaters and the like and none of it looking particularly feminine. Only one very short, very sleeveless, very creme crepe dress. BTW the store looked exactly like this a few weeks ago. You would never guess it's the holidays. You would never guess when you have moved from the women's section into the men's in some areas. Please Jcrew: I am as much a fan of plaids and excursion vests as the next shopper. Sometimes I need something different though...could you send a few feminine things from your website to Canadian stores??????????????????? Maybe a even work blouse perhaps?

  10. I'd really enjoy it JCrew kept prices steady and made lasting decisions about reductions. I hate feeling like I'm shopping for airline tickets.

    1. I agree, Jessica. The fair isle leggings (e4478) went from $98 to $78 (not a promo, but a change in the "regular" price). I had them in my cart earlier in the week and debated getting them with the 30% off your purchase promo, but then decided to wait until after the holidays (It's in the 50's here for the foreseeable future). This morning, the regular price is back up to $98. Airline tickets are a great analogy!

    2. This is exactly right. Its why I started using Discover's Price Protection which is good for 90 days after purchase.

    3. ...And today the leggings are $79.99, but as a "regular" price so the 40% doesn't apply. *eyeroll*

  11. Oh, bother, my military faux fur coat was cancelled on my order. I had hoped they were simply behind with orders from 12/3. Melissa@allthingssimplified had such good things to say about hers, too. Bummer.

    1. Same thing happened to me, navy size P10. I found it odd because when j placed the order there were 2 in stock and in fact one was still available the following morning.

  12. I'm just not wowed by much as JC. I did get the boucle cocoon coat last month and I do like that a lot. But I'm just not happy overall, with the prices and also the fact that every.single.thing is made in China. The prices really aren't justified, given the quality of most of the stuff.

  13. Received my cyber Monday/week orders and every pair of pants needs to be steamed. The one pair of jeans I absolutely loved pretty much out of the bag (point sur teddy buckle back cropped jeans, which I was reluctant to buy because of mixed reviews and final sale) has uneven legs. Rather than immediately order another pair I contacted customer service, who tells me to ship them back and they will examine them to determine if they are actually, in fact, imperfect, but they are now sold out in my size so I can't buy another pair. I responded saying I can bring them back to my local store to return, but wondered since they were sold out (and I do love them), would they consider a credit for alterations to fix the uneven legs? The CS rep who responded said in this case, they would, I just need to provide a receipt. (Now to find a tailor for jeans who is an expert at seams and who won't make the jeans too short? Or keep stalking for a popback in my size.)
