"Looking to VENT" with J.Crew

This is the weekly "Looking to VENT with J.Crew" post, a place to share our not-so-stellar experiences with J.Crew.

If you have recently experienced a frustrating situation with J.Crew, maybe you might be willing to share that information with us in this post.

Please feel free to share your story on almost any topic— including poor experiences with purchases & orders, promotions/ offers, in-store visits, transactions with store associates, etc.

  1. Final sale is back at Madewell. Guess I'll be starting my resolution to shop less a few days early!

    1. I actually tried on most of the items on my wishlist, for JCrew, in anticipation of Final Sale. So I'm ready, I just hope there is a good, 50%, discount when they actually do it.

    2. wow Jessica that is a really smart idea! A few things on my wishlist I *know* will go to FS eventually (full size run, been on sale forever), but it never occurred to me to try out first so I'd be ready when FS hit.

  2. I ordered the fair isle cardigan on pop-back and then a day later received the shipment notification. After obsessively checking UPS tracking for a week, I noticed my package was making no progress to my house. Then a couple days ago I received an email from J.Crew telling me that my item was being fulfilled in store, and despite having a shipping label printed, was no longer available.
So frustrating! If J.Crew wants to continue fulfilling orders from store inventory, they need to get a better inventory management system and/or provide better training for in-store employees.
To be honest, whenever I have an item coming from a store, chances are there is something wrong with it - either it has been shoved into a tiny package and is a wrinkled mess when it arrives, has a strong perfume smell from being tried on by an overly-spritzed patron, looks shop-worn, takes forever to ship, or now, does not ship at all.
I think another JCA mentioned they wish when you ordered online a notification came up to alert you the item was being fulfilled in store. (Of course they would likely lose a ton of business since I know I personally never continue with the purchase!)

    1. Anything that comes from a store should also not be Final Sale for that very reason.

    3. I had a very similar situation- I ordered a sweater, got a shipping notification and then it sat for over a week. My store told me to be patient, after a couple days I called again and was told my order was cancelled as the store didn't have it. Super frustrating!

    4. Alex - it's worse when you think the item has shipped because that's when you feel a sense of victory that you're actually going to get your item! I can't understand why a shipping label would be printed without pulling the item first.

  3. How do you know when it arrives if it came from a store or online? I'm curious to know. Thanks.

    1. I can tell by the tag - if the tag is intact with no price, it is from the warehouse. If the tag has the price pulled off of the bottom, it came from a store. Also - store items have the security tag still attached. Warehouse items don't have these. Lastly - you can tell by where they're shipped from; look at the mailing label. If it's taped on with shipping tape, it came from a store. If it's a regular peel-and-stick label, it came from the warehouse.

    2. Yes, all the things that Taylor said. Also, the invoice in the package is different. It's regular size printer paper that they print off their computer.

    3. When you get the tracking number...If it is not coming from Lynchburg, it's coming from a store. Sometimes CS can tell you where it is going to ship from when you order because they can see the inventory.

    5. Wow thanks guys, that's very informative. I'll be honest I still don't think I'll know the difference though lol. I might have to look at some things I have with labels on them still and some invoices as well. I wouldn't even know what an invoice on printer paper looks like or the difference between a peel and stick label or a label is put on with shipping tape. The only thing I definitely can tell is when I check online the tracking I see it mentions Lynchburg. I have only had two absolutely terrible experiences with receiving extremely damaged goods from JC. One was with a blazer that was off the website for a while, then lo and behold it popped up and I grabbed it. It came completely used, hair on it, a stain on the lining. Well I really wanted this blazer and so I called them and they paid for the dry cleaning. That was so desperate of me to keep it but I don't regret it. The other was over the summer, an ivory bi-stretch skirt and blazer, the blazer was ripped, like someone stabbed it in several places. It was absolutely nutty. All other purchases and there have been many have been flawless. I wonder if those bad experiences were from the store?

  5. Okay J.Crew; what's with the crazy sale price game? One day an item is on sale plus an additional percentage off; then mysteriously the next day full price.

Any of the stores I visit keep items as sale once they hit the sale rack; but with J.Crew it's like a bag game of whack a mole. You never know what's going to pop up.

With some of the irregularities in fit, the occasional less than stellar quality, but mainly the over charging and over priced items have reminded me to look and buy more over at Club Monaco. Over the past few months they've seen most of my money and the items are better.

Does this mean I'll soon be known as Club Monaco guy in Canada?

    2. I remember that happening last year quite a bit but haven't seen it yet. I've seen final sale be on and then removed, which makes me feel for the people who bought it on final sale and then final sale isn't on for people who are buying it later on, seems unfair to the first batch of buyers. Brooks Brothers is the worst at price jumping. I got a silk bow blouse for a great price but it's now back to a not so great sale price. They do these flash sales that are literally like for a day and that's it.

  6. I received an item shipped from a store and it actually looks like it was never taken out of the clear plastic bag it originally came in. Neatly folded and no wear/stains/etc. I have no idea why it was shipped from a store to begin with (the drapey sleeveless popover shirt).

  7. Just found out that sale is now 50% off at the store I shop the most. I guess they are not waiting until after Christmas. I got the fair isle crew neck in breeze multi for $35.00 I think. I had been looking at that sweater but wanted to get it on sale. I remember last year I bought some things too soon so this year I decided to have patience.

    3. Called NorthPark Mall in D/FW & 50% off sale through Monday.

    4. That is a phenomenal price for the breeze multi sweater! I got the neutral version for $42 online. Do you want to know something crazy considering 90 something % of my wardrobe is J. Crew...I've never been inside the store. It's been years since I've been to a mall and when I say years I'm talking over a decade. The last memory I have of going to a mall was taking my children for portraits right before I was due with my 3rd who is almost 10.

    5. I wanted to say regarding shopping too soon...I did that with my kids back to school shopping from Lands End. I didn't realize they take 50% off eventually and I shopped when it was 30%. But Lands End has no time frame for returns so guess what I did...I bought a lot of it over again at 50% and printed up the receipts from when I bought it at 30%, they honored it. They are so great for kids clothes.

  8. Vanouver Robsen st store. 40% off. half of the store is sale section. Lots of shoes .looked bought nothing. if anyone wants the toggle melton coat they had quite a few in different sizes in the nice green color. it is very thin , Still not worth the sale price IMO. C

  9. Yikes - a lot of rejected bridal in the sale section. I think JC should pull back from this category.

  10. My passport case got canceled (ordered it on a big popback day). Found another one, finally, at Vera Bradley of all places. It's leather and is packaged with a nice leather luggage tag, if anyone is on the hunt for a passport case. It would make a nice gift set.

  11. Forget when final sale will be back. Do we predict the day after Christmas?
