"Looking to VENT" with J.Crew

This is the weekly "Looking to VENT with J.Crew" post, a place to share our not-so-stellar experiences with J.Crew.

If you have recently experienced a frustrating situation with J.Crew, maybe you might be willing to share that information with us in this post.

Please feel free to share your story on almost any topic— including poor experiences with purchases & orders, promotions/ offers, in-store visits, transactions with store associates, etc.

  1. OT: Sorry for posting here, but I'm not sure about the best place to pose this question to you, my dear JCAs. I have been searching for awhile now for a pair of jeans that have no or very little stretch (1%). I don't use the term very often, but I absolutely hate the feel of stretchy denim on me. (Please don't be offended if you happen to love it, this is my personal issue :) Non-stretch jeans have become maddeningly elusive, which forces me to rely on my collection of old jeans more and more. And while I still like all my old jeans, I'd like to change my routine up a bit. At this point, I'm not even looking for a particular style (well, maybe I could do without "mom jeans" lol) or brand, I just want to know if any of you have come across non-stretch jeans that you could recommend. TIA!

    1. Try Boden. I recently ordered a pair of their skinny jeans (item #WC144), but I returned them because I felt like they didn't have any strech, so they were uncomfortable to me. So you may like them! Otherwise, the fit was great for me. I ordered the Indigo Wash, the other washes appear to have different fabric content. HTH.

    2. Hi Ivanka - some of the Point Sur jeans at JC are 100% cotton. I've also had luck finding 100% cotton jeans at Gap, but you really have to look through all the item descriptions which can be a pain. Also, if you know exactly what you're looking for (like replacing some old jeans and know item #'s, etc), eBay can be great for jeans. I've gotten past season JC jeans for <$20. Just double-check the item description to make sure that they haven't been hemmed. I learned this the hard way! ; )

    3. Joe's jeans made a line of vintage inspired and ripped jeans last year. I have 2 pairs that are size 28-29 (fit like 30) that have ZERO stretch... So, if that is your size, I will happily unload them. Or you can also just search for Joe's Vintage Reserve. Check those out!!

    4. I agree with silver_lining, the Point Sur don't have any stretch to them. Expensive, but there are a few in the sale section with 50% off on top making them more affordable.

    5. AG 'Angel' bootcut that have the white inside waist tag not the red. Content must be 98% cotton/ 2% elastane. Basically no stretch and most flattering jeans ever ( I have like 8 pairs and counting!)

    6. I would recommend AG as well -- they have lots of options that are 90-98% cotton.

  2. OT - early access new arrivals at J Crew Factory are up. Cannot believe they trotted out the plaid popover & white popover with the chevron beaded pocket trim - on sale for $55 - when they sat in the retail sale section for eons at <$25.

    Kinda mehhhh about everything. Might pick up another pair of the mid-rise skinny jeans in velvet though (have them in plum and navy from prior years). I like the teal colorway a lot.

    1. Taylor - I see a blazer that is very similar to the old school Bella Blazer. The collar is almost exact. And of course, the Elephant Skirt, which I expected is being offered too.

    2. I wish they'd have offered the elephant skirt in a pencil silhouette. The mini is too short for me!

    3. The Pointelle Cable Sweater was still in the regular sale section for $70 + 40% off, it came out fall of last year and now it's in Factory. I guess they can't predict what will end up lurking this long on retail when they have to prep for Factory production but if the knock off is in Factory maybe it's time to drop the price in retail.

  3. Ivanka -

    I too dislike stretch and cling. I have been searching for jeans that have just the right mix of mid-rise, slim and straight but not tight and no wrinkly knees. I was somewhat surprised that the current Matchsticks are pretty good. I tried them on in two washes. The black ones are terrible and have different fabric content - too much stretch. The lighter wash ones were great and have the same fabric content as the dark wash ones, which they didn't have in-store in my size. They have gotten mixed reviews FYI, so I haven't purchased them yet.

    I'd love to know what you buy since it sounds like we have similar inclinations. Good luck.

  4. Re: non stretch jeans, I finally ordered the Point Sur shore ditch selvedge in chipman wash. Its final sale (which much to my dismay they wouldn't budge on) but I asked for specific measurements. They call it high rise but I intend to wear it hip slung. If they don't work I will try to return in store. Even at a deep discount they are still expensive.
    Otherwise, I search thrift stores for old Levis and sometimes distress them myself. I check the boys' department and small men's sizes).

  5. When will they ever put some of the coats on promo - like the hooded chateau parka. Y U NOT 25% OFF?

    1. LOL, here here!

      Last year, they included the Chateau Parka (I think, mistakenly) in promos at the beginning of the season (just after release), and then frustratingly kept them out of all promos until they went on sale, like in April. So maddening! Hopefully, they will not keep us waiting so long this season!

    2. maybe try in-store? I went yesterday and some of the coats (i.e., the boucle and windowpane cocoons) that I was pretty sure were not included in the promo, she told me were 25% off

    3. Hi, you might want to do what Jessy suggested and try the store. Last week on the day of new arrivals they were offering 30% off all coats. I asked her if their were any exclusions and she said no...

    4. Good point about trying in store, Jessy and Lauren!

      Also, Staci, with the new promo just rolled out tonight, you can save $75 off the price of the coat, or $175 off a $500 order (that is, if there are other items you are interested in!). I wanted the regal blue colour, which isn't available in my stores, so I was happy to be able to get an on-line discount!

  6. Thank you so much, ladies, for your responses!

    @swissmiss
    I will definitely give Boden a look. I have actually never ordered from them as the sizing can be tricky, but maybe now I'm getting desperate enough to finally figure it out :)
    @silver_lining, @Ema and @Suzanne Hassler
    I have to look more closely at the Point Sur denim, but for me that means driving 2.5 hours to have that closer look. (Living in a small college town is great until you realize the distance to the nearest JC store :) Some "artisan" denim made in the "vintage" style (read 100% cotton) available in small quantities online can cost upwards of $400 so the Point Sur jeans seems affordable in comparison. It's all relative, right? :)
    @Staci Black
    Thanks for the suggestion and offer, I'm looking for sz. 28.
    @bindi
    Thanks for the suggestion, I'll look into AG!
    @cousy
    Mid-rise, slim, and straight without stretch - you're speaking my language! Why is it so hard to do? I just ordered the toothpick Japanese selvedge jeans in hulton wash (b0132) because they're not FS. The reviews are pretty good with most of them saying that the jeans have very little stretch and actually have the feel of real denim. Imagine that! Lol I'll post a review here once they arrive.

    1. Just a heads up, I don't live near a flagship store or concept store, but I have never seen the Point Sur denim in the stores near me. With that long a drive, I suggest calling to see if they have them at the store you'd be going to. Mine usually don't have anything specialty like that, very few third party collaboration items. Hope you find what you're looking for!

      Thanks for the heads up! I didn't realize the Point Sure denim might not be available in stores.

    3. If you are planning on ordering anything from Boden wait until next week. They are having a diminishing discount promo starting on Monday. It's starts off at 25% and then decreases from their. Also, their sizing information is awesome as they tell you the specific garment measurements for each item! I agree with you about the non-stretchy, sturdy, thick denim. My favorite pair right now are an older pair from jcrew factory. The rise, color, and fabric are perfect and I really wish I had bought multiple pairs!

  7. Good morning, Levi's 501 for women? 100% cotton.
    I hate stretch!

  8. Why are none of the full length pants on promo?!?!?!

  9. thanks to all for the jeans recommendations! I will wear jeans with a bit of stretch but really prefer the look and feel of 100% cotton jeans, which have become nearly impossible to find in recent years. Mens jeans are ALWAYS 100% cotton which doesn't seem fair. My other jean complaint is whiskering on EVERYTHING. Have never liked it and it refuses to go away.

  10. I've posted this before and now I will again because it continues to frustrate me. What happened to sleeves on dresses? I need conservative work clothes, and nearly all the J Crew dresses are sleeveless. I suspect that it is a cost-cutting measure, like the awful exposed zippers that look so tired these days.

  11. My vent: an order I placed a week ago is still open. Really? And a few weeks earlier I ordered something that was back ordered until December and it arrived within a few days (with no notice!).
