JCA "Help Style Me!" Weekly Post

This is the weekly "Help Style Me!" post, where we can share items we are having trouble putting outfits together with. Elaine (in this post) says it best, "You know, that thing you bought because you love it and you keep pulling it out and then putting it away without wearing it?"

Please share your J.Crew item (either that you own or are thinking about getting) that you would love help creating an outfit with.

Also, please help out by offering your styling advice. Feel free to include links to your blog (where you incorporated that piece) or to Polyvore (where you showcased an outfit with that piece). Thanks in advance! :)

  1. This is an oldie but it's just been languishing in my closet, tags-on: the Midnight Floral cocoon top. Aside from black & denim I don't really have anything that "goes." I thought MAYBE the top + black cardi + No 2 pencil skirt in Blue Grotto? I can't come up with anything else. It's such a beautiful print & it is ridiculous I haven't worn it yet!

    1. Taylor, I think this top looks stunning with a cobalt blue cardigan, black pants or jeans and cobalt blue suede shoes. I would add a long pendant necklace too because the neckline of the top makes it difficult to wear anything else. I think it would also look good with burgundy cardigan and matching suede shoes. I saw somebody wear it with a blazer too (a navy or black schoolboy) & jeans and it was pretty cute Hope this gives you some ideas.

    2. Thanks SC! I like the idea of a black or navy blazer over it... maybe with skinnies or skinny flare jeans & cobalt flats or pumps! I also have purple suede Martinas - they would work too, I think.

    3. I wear mine with dark gray slacks and fuchsia tippi cardi- brings out the pink in the pattern!

    5. Taylor, I think your outfit ideas sound gorgeous! And I love Shopping Celle's and Laura Matey's ideas as well. I wear mine with black or navy skinny capris and an aqua tippi cardigan.

    6. Taylor - this might not work right now depending on your weather, but check out the cocoon with a white blazer on Mix and Match Fashion.

  2. JCA, anyone has IRL pictures of Lady Day Coat in red (bright cerise) and/or retro-pink? I'm debating between colors, which one to keep or both? and how to style the two.
    Any recommendation is greatly appreciated!

    1. I don't have pictures, but be aware that bright cerise is an orangey red. Depending on your coloring or wardrobe, it may make a difference in whether you like it.

    2. I have several Lady Day coats including the Bright Cerise, which I love. I agree with WA Shopper that it is not a true red but is a bright orangey red. I find it very flattering an versatile. It looks great will neutral scarves like camel, ivory, navy, brown, black, as well as brights like fuchsia pink for a bold look. I don't have the Retro Pink as it just doesn't suite my taste. I do have the Neon Flame, which I would describe as a bright pinky coral - another love for me. I also have a love for Sephora "color lip last" lipsticks and think that the no 16 Orange Rocks is a good match for the Bright Cerise and the no 13 Pink Sunset matches the Neon Flame.

    3. @WA Shopper, thank you so much for the suggestion.

@ Lexette, love your comparison to the colors of lipstick. I have Asian fair skin, so I think the Bright Cerise is gonna be OK for my skin tone. Thanks for the scarves suggestion. Interestingly, I just noticed the Neon Flame (warmer tone?) has pockets in the front whereas the Bright Cerise (cooler tone?) has pockets in the side. Do you feel a big difference due to the pocket design?

I'll need to play with these two once I receive them; now they are backordered.

  3. I'm styling the red buffalo check Factory shirt on the blog today and the Grace-wash jeans. Really love both of these pieces. They both run TTS.

  4. question about tippi sizing, I know this has probably been asked a million times bfor lol, but I've just gotten into j crew this year! I typically wear a sz 12 M/L and was wondering if it was necessary to size up for layering a button up underneath. Is TTS generally pretty fitted? appreciate feedback!

    2. I'm usually a 10 or 12 in JCrew button downs and do a size large in Tippi sweaters - I could fit in a medium in previous years, but left no room for a button down. The large is just the right amount of slouchy on their own, and I can wear a thin button down ( think white shirt, not a flannel ) underneath. I too have a chest :). Hoe that helps.

    3. Oh and in the new Tippi introduced this fall, I'm def a large. The medium was too snug.

    4. I agree with Laura. In the older Tippis I wear a small or an x-small (no layering under the xs). I haven't tried the new Tippi myself but I read here that most people thought they were a little more snug.
