JCA "Help Style Me!" Weekly Post

This is the weekly "Help Style Me!" post, where we can share items we are having trouble putting outfits together with. Elaine (in this post) says it best, "You know, that thing you bought because you love it and you keep pulling it out and then putting it away without wearing it?"

Please share your J.Crew item (either that you own or are thinking about getting) that you would love help creating an outfit with.

Also, please help out by offering your styling advice. Feel free to include links to your blog (where you incorporated that piece) or to Polyvore (where you showcased an outfit with that piece). Thanks in advance! :)

  1. I bought the structured knit zip dress in midnight (item B6128) and am having trouble pairing it with anything but black, which is so dull. Part of the problem is that it's tights weather in Boston now. I think if I could do bare legs I could be more creative. Would love some ideas!

    1. That dress is stunning! How about a colorful scarf, navy tights & tall cognac boots? If your work environment calls for it, I think even a burgundy or mustard tight with tall cognac boots would be a cool look.

    2. Liz, what about a berry or jade/turquoise colored shoe/accessories? I love navy and pink together - maybe a darker pink for fall...or even grey would work too.

    3. Greetings Liz - I purchased this dress in black and midnight for its impeccable design and fit, and so I could channel my inner Claire Underwood. I think blue and black are a great color combination - I wear my midnight dress with black suede pumps and sheer black or nude tights (I have black suede and leather tall high-heel boots too but haven't done that combination). Jewelry includes the Pearl Twisted Hammock Necklace for one look and the Marine Crystal Earrings for another since pearls and crystal brighten up the face. I think this is one item that should be allowed to stand out on it's own without being over-accessorized. Otherwise it's just another dress. Good luck! Jennifer

    1. @unknown you could do chambray, navy, royal purple, navy, even white, grey or ivory (although plain) would be a great contrast (I have the blouse and it looked great with a white blazer or jeans over the summer). If you were feeling adventurous from a pattern mixing standpoint, blue pinstripes would be fun too!

    2. I think grey, silver, or a deep raisin color would work. Maybe a Tippi sweater?

    3. Chambray under a Tippi in navy or black... or the jeweled-collar sleeveless oxford under a Tippi. Or with a navy or black blazer.

    4. A royal blue/cobalt tippi pullover or a cardigan and matching suede shoes is stunning with those pants. I am on the hunt for a cobalt sweater to wear with mine.

  3. I ordered two of the wool back-zip sweaters that went on promo less 40% today. I got the heather blueberry and deep redwood. I know they are on the shorter side but I plan on layering them over a button up. Hope they are cute on. I love the way you can unzip the back like the model on the website. Saw the deep redwood in store and loved the color.

    1. Greetings Julieann - I own a few of these and love them! They are definitely winter items for me, and I tend to wear them with Tissue Turtleneck Tees, other turtleneck knits, boy shirts, and denim/chambray shirts. The knits and shirts should be fitted, otherwise it's too much fabric underneath the blazer. Bottoms include skinny jeans or cords with tall riding-type boots, although boot-cut bottoms would work as well. I haven't paired mine with the No. 2 Pencil Skirt in Double-Serge Wool, but that's an option. The Tippi is a great layering piece, and while I haven't tried it on, the new mockneck version has potential (although I'm not sure about those bracelet sleeves). Hope this helps - Jennifer

    2. P.S. Try Pixie's on the bottom too.
P.S.S. I usually just Google "J.Crew (insert item here) . . . one of the results is usually a slew of images from the J.Crew website, style guide, other websites (e.g., Worn on TV), and various Instagrammers. Polyvore is also helpful, but I have less success with it.

  5. Has anyone tried the Merino Sweater-dress #e6131 ? I'm curious about the fit on a curvy, 5'3" gal like me. It just looks like a vintage dress that I've seen on my mum in old photos.

  6. I'm styling the Factory cable knit cinnamon sweater, Factory Grace jeans, and the retail's felt leather trimmed hat on the blog today. All items were TTS. Really loving these jeans. I was at the store yesterday debating buying a second pair! They fit as good as J.Brand.
