"Looking to VENT" with J.Crew

This is the weekly "Looking to VENT with J.Crew" post, a place to share our not-so-stellar experiences with J.Crew.

If you have recently experienced a frustrating situation with J.Crew, maybe you might be willing to share that information with us in this post.

Please feel free to share your story on almost any topic— including poor experiences with purchases & orders, promotions/ offers, in-store visits, transactions with store associates, etc.

  1. Not a vent - extra 60% off sale items with code FLASH. Some amazing deals. I spent some time pausing, and removing items from my cart. In the end, I bought a bunch of stuff for the men in my life ($7.00 Cdn flannel shirts and pants?). I had to struggle to remove stuff (hard to say no to men's leather gloves at $12 Cdn, but I did). I said no to the Tretorn net sneakers in my size at $25 Cdn, but did end up caving and buying 2 pairs of Ryan loafers for myself at $34 Cdn each.

Some items are final sale, some are not.

    1. I agree some great deals for men this morning. Some nice wool sweaters were $8-$10 and cashmere scarves $10 too.

    2. Ugh. Took a step backwards. I went back and ordered the men's gloves at $12 when I realized they were not final sale. If my minimalist hubby says no (and he probably will), I can return. Of course, I thought I might as well add a couple more (not final sale) flannel shirts since they are the cost of a large latte... I can't decide if I am being really smart stocking up or really stupid.

    3. I ordered a bunch of Mens items too, most were not final sale. So if Hubs does not like, we can return. Cashmere scarf, gloves, shirts, pants - the most expensive item was pants at $16. Most items were $10 or less. Plus I sent gifts to my stepson and my stepdaughters boyfriend - cashmere hats, scarves and pj pants.

I am proud to say the only thing I ordered for me is a cashmere hat, which is an item I will definitely wear. It is from Mens but I have a large head and the red color is perfect with my winter parka.

Plus I got price adjustments on some things I ordered at 50% off! Since I ordered them before final sale, I still have a return option on some.

    4. I am doing the same thing. Filling up my cart for my minimalist boyfriend, who will probably say "why would I need more shirts"?.

    5. And now I can't check out in Edge, Safari or Chrome. Le sigh.

    6. Just volume, since prices are so low! Keep trying...

    7. order went through - 5 flannels for the man (2 are heavyweight Wallace & Barnes orig. $98), shirt and gloves for the boy - $40.80 total.
      Mommy got nothing.

    8. Hooray @Cheritheberry! My husband always says no and then when it arrives he begins to wear it right away...I just avoid final sale...

    9. Same. I told him and he was into it! I believe because flannel > regular button downs, in his eyes.
I'm mildly annoyed I spent money at the crew and didn't get anything for myself...and now I'm off to Amazon to buy water filters for the fridge...how exciting.

      Delete
    10. @Cheritheberry - It's quite good for you!

    11. Ordered some popbacks that finally showed up in my size: cropped plaid cardigan in metallic knit, strappy block heel glitter sandal, black linen tank (love these for summer) and leopard calf half belt.

  2. I'm trying to stop myself from buying the lady coat in metallic tweed. I have the solid black but thought the metallic was a fun twist. Don't need it. It's a great price though and totally a classic. So stupid...trying to stop myself.

    2. I too am so tempted by one of the lady jackets.. the silver tweed. I don't have any lady jackets so I don't know how it'll look on me but they look. so.classy.
However, I can't log into my account right now and everything I'm adding to my cart isn't showing up, so I'm taking this as a sign that JC doesn't want my money and I am going to slowly back away from my computer.

  3. On a completely different note. My legs are short relative to the rest of my (short) body. I finally accepted that my Fred Flintstone proportions are better off in higher rise jeans and decided that it was time to let my low rise jeans and cords go. I just donated a shocking amount. It killed me since they were all premium brands (Citizens, 7 for All Mankind, Paige, AG, etc.) but I consoled myself that I had gotten them at great prices so I got reasonable value out of them. (Very debatable given the sheer volume and the fact that there are only so many days in the year.) Of course, once I had given away my low rise items and finally embraced higher rise pants, that was going to be the signal that low rise pants were coming up.

If you need non skinny mid and high rise jeans, and can find them non final sale on J Crew, I highly recommend trying the J Crew Vintage Straight in Mayville wash and the worn-in black. I was surprisngly disappointed though in the plain resin wash though.

    1. Ha! I am still very happy with my mid-rise pants as my preferred fit, and I do like high rise as well. I never had super low-rise pants ever. I still wear my Matchsticks, which are a low/mid rise.

      Delete
    2. I never like the resin washes, for some reason. I agree about the Vintage Straight in Mayville and worn-in black, they're a nice fit. The rise is slightly higher than mid-rise but not a true high rise. I can't do a true high rise, even belted, because they bunch down my torso. I must be too short-waisted for them or something. I prefer a true mid-rise overall and was glad when J. Crew embraced their Vintage Straight style and put out a bunch of washes the last year or two.

    3. This cracks me up. As a long torsoed person with a high waist but average length legs, medium rise is like low rise on me and often high waisted pants gap at the butt which is why I don't wear one piece bathing suits either.
For dressier and wide leg I do prefer a high rise generally speaking, but I admit I'm not crazy about high rise jeans. I did just buy a pair of Point Sur straight leg jeans in black (charcoal) that happen to be flattering but maybe I should return them. 😂 (Note to self, the last thing you need is another pair of jeans sitting on the shelf so figure this out stat.)
I happen to prefer boyfriend jeans on my hips and I love my 8" toothpicks. 9" is like a midrise on me.

      Delete
    4. Yayyyyy! I love low-rise waists. As someone larger chested I find high-rise styles make me look even more short in the torso than I am. I also hope that as high-rise pants go away so too will crop tops.

      Delete
    5. I don’t pay attention to rise/waist trends and just buy what works for me. I’m thick through the waist, so neither low rise nor super high rise work for me, regardless of how stylish they might be. If high-rise works with your body, just go for it and say goodbye to those pants that never really worked for you regardless of brand/price/trend.

  4. I too pulled the trigger on the snakeskin mules for $30 and The Reed's Sweater for less than $24. I'll wear the mules for a fall trip and the sweater is classic enough to wear for a while. I wanted the Lady Day Coat but decided not to buy it since I have the black one from a few years back.

    1. I'm tempted by the mules too. Do you have any heeled mules? I saw a JCA wearing them on IG with plaid pants but then went back and couldn't find the pic. They looked really cute. I'm always concerned about them falling off my feel and barely wear my flat mules for that very reason.

    2. I have the snakeskin mules, I love them with my black madewell coveralls. They are comfy and I have no falling off feet problem. I was happy to get them for $40. They have prevented me from buying the captoe boots, which alas, never seem to be available in my size when I would actually buy them with the 60% off!

  5. hmm 60% again. I admit I took a quick peak and them left the site.
told myself new roll out soon. see what it is like. xmas is over AND i really need do not need velvet.

  6. I find the quality of J.Crew's shoes too low these days for even the cheapest of prices. I have quite a few pairs from many years past, so I am very happy with wearing those. I'm holding strong not shopping this month and I haven't made a J.Crew purchase since Dec 7th.

  9. Styling question: how do you wear your lady day jackets? I have a few similar cuts from Biden by I’m tired of them. They are about 7 years old and while still in excellent condition it’s one item I’m thinking of replacing (well not replacing, just tucking them away for a bit). I love this kind of jacket for the weekend all spring, over graphic tees and button downs. I don’t wear them much to work though. How do you style your lady day jacket for work? (I should probably post this tomorrow but I’ll likely forget lol!)

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Love them but Lady Day Jackets can be aging and tricky to style, esp the tweedy versions and if you are over 40, I think. It’s easy to veer “dowdy” in these.

I usually wear them over an untucked long, slim knit like a Perfect Tee or Tissue Turtleneck in a not-too-matchy color. Casual pants, flats and no jewelry look better to my eye than dressy trousers and pumps for work because the jacket is enough of a statement. I try to avoid any combos that look too matchy, precious, or cliche.

      Delete
    2. I realized the boxy cuts don't work very well on me, but I did get the longer version and like it. I agree it can look kind of matronly. I wear it with skinny pants (usually my black leather) and tops that have collars that peek out the top.
I do like the shorter versions with a pleated skirt, knowing how much you like midi skirts that's what I'd suggest! I kind of like the irony of wearing it like Jackie O would so I don't mind layers of pearls, etc.

  10. I wear mine with jeans over a white t-shirt.

  11. Surprises today, my packages came earlier than anticipated.
Everlane. I got the bronze day boots and the chunky knit merino turtleneck.
I ordered the turtleneck in size XS since it ran big and I'm between XS/S. The fit is slouchy enough. I love it. I tried it on wit the Blythe silk blouse under it and remembered one of the reasons I got the silk blouse was for layering under sweaters like this.
I ordered the boots in 8.5 my usual size. The length is a tiny bit long but they're narrow. The leather is very soft and they'll break in. Almost like a cross between a sock boot and a leather bootie. They look good with skinny jeans. The bronze color is very subtle. For me they're good going out shoes when I don't want to wear heels. I think the choose what you pay price for both of these items is fair. I'll wear the sweater to death. The boots less.

Also got the Sadie boots in redwood suede. I sized up to 9 and the fit is perfect. They match my Parke Topcoat from last winter perfectly which is what I hoped. They're an earthy brick red, a little darker than terra-cotta. I will wear them with black and maybe dark gray. These also probably won't get tons of wear but I love that they match the coat.

Not having much luck with my order which is just as well.

Decided not to get the metallic tweed lady coat. The hook closure means it doesn't stay closed very well and the collarless style is less flattering on me. Since I have the solid black that's probably all I need. Although it's very tempting.

Also, decided to return the Point Sur high waisted straight leg jeans in charcoal. The do fit very well but I know the super high rise and straight leg isn't my favorite silhouette. I was thinking they'd be good for warmer months when I detest skinny jeans but the top is fitted and after reading those articles about low rise jeans coming back (I don't jump on bandwagons right away anyway) I decided why force myself to wear something even if it looks good, if it doesn't feel right. Even if they don't make me look as skinny, I'll just stick with my slouchy boyfriend jeans and loose pants in the summer.

    1. The high waist straight leg was my 90's GAP jeans! I actually gave the remaining pairs in good shape to my sister-in-law who wears them all the time. I kept the totally faded pair with the *real* distressing in the knees. They are way too big, but I might make cutoffs.

      Delete
    2. I think that's why I can't wear them anymore, they totally remind me of the '90s...meanwhile my 20 year old tried them on and loved them but said she could see why *I* think they look like mom jeans. She offered to buy them from me, for like half price... 😂 hmm...store return for full price or sell to child for half... she's a little bigger than I am so maybe she can stretch them out a tiny bit and then I'll love them. Worn jeans are always better.

    3. Ok, so give the kid the jeans, but never trust her opinion again!

  13. a day of many escaping popbacks...not at all certain that I actually succeeded in reducing anything I’ll love to actual possession. And because of website issues, I seem to have bought a few things twice. Grrr.

  14. Popback double faced cashmere top arrived to some disappoinent. Thinner than the one I have from a few years ago, and a discoloration on the front that is noticeable. Color was much more plum than the red wine I was anticipating. Just based on the quality, the starting price is insulting. This record is an oldie but not a goodie.

  15. Has anyone tried/reviewed the Oversized Patchwork Cableknit Sweater? I missed it this morning, it sold out in my size/colour before I could check out, but I’ll watch for a popback. I’m normally a large in sweaters, but when I see “oversized “ that’s usually a cue for me to size down. I’d love to hear from anyone who’s tried it!

  16. Uggh. JCrew!!! Grrrr!!!

I know I shouldn't be spending but a liberty pajama set popped back in my size and there was the extra % off and I had a rewards card so I said sure!!

It just arrived and is missing the bottoms.

    Nice quality control there. :/

    2. Hard-pressed to think of another relationship, retail or otherwise, where I would put up with that crap :)

      Delete
    3. That happened to me once! I called CS and they let me pick another pj set and honored the price. If it was just the bottoms, it wouldn't be so bad. Make sure you don't lose your rewards dollars - ask to have them applied to your next or any unshipped order.

    4. In the past few months I've now gotten damaged items, crushed boxes, wrong items and half pajama sets. And yet I still order... Which should tell JCrew how loyal their customers are! But I'm reaching the end of my patience now. I'm afraid customer service is just going start thinking I'm making stuff up now.

    5. I also had this happen two years ago to a set of blackwatch flannel pjs. The top showed up but not the pants. I just ordered the matching pants a week ago when they popped back in my size. They refunded me for the entire set last time and told me to keep the top. I picked up the pants for $13.xx so essentially I got the entire set for $13.xx and two years of time waiting.

    6. @eeps, amazing that you finished the set! You have some patience.

    7. @p banos- I nearly forgot about it until my family Christmas party with a pajamas dress code and I found the top and was like why do I have this but no matching pants?? I would have totally forgotten about them.

  17. What’s the deal with the velour hoodies? I ordered (actually have two coming and need to return one). Then noticed yesterday it went from 50% off to 60% off of $59.99 but then showed as final sale. Now today they are full price $79.99 with 25% off.

    1. JCA recommendations for it probably skewed the pricing algorithm!

  18. I have recently enjoyed some serious price adjustments...or so I thought. Checking back on my order history, I see that "adjusted" items from a few days ago still show the original prices I paid. Is it normal that it takes awhile for the price adjustments to be reflected in order history?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Ive noticed that too. I think if the PA was processed before the item shipped then the order history reflects the new prices. I returned a couple of things that I got PAs for and they rang up as different prices than my order history. Some things that supposedly got PAs rang up at their original prices so now I have no idea what I got PAs for until I return or see a credit adjustment on my CC bill.

      Delete
    2. for Canadians I have been told the price adj get are not done until item shipping out. same with waiving of shipping...if they will do it ...it gets refunded after shipping.
I am basking in my relaxtion of not having any orders coming. going strong for dec/jan no shopping do far!

      Delete
    3. Yes I think that's correct for US as well. When I said if PA is processed before shipping, I meant the PA request is processed - requested and granted, and then when the item ships, it will reflect (and charge) the new price. If it is requested and granted after the item ships (ie after JC has already charged you for the item, since they don't charge until the item ships), then the PA shows up as a credit adjustment on your CC bill and, I've found that it doesn't update with the new price in the order history.

      Delete
  19. Thanks eeps. On the one hand, it's great that their customer service even offers price adjustments. On the other, it's so annoying to have to check credit card statements for price adjustments and return credits, and then have to retroactively deal with it.

I purchased a sweater this past weekend at 40% off for a total of $45. On Tuesday the price was dropped to an insane $19 and then an additional 60% off for a SINGLE DIGIT total. I'm not sure if the PA was officially before or after it shipped--it was the same day--but it's still showing $45 in my order history.
