"Looking to VENT" with J.Crew

This is the weekly "Looking to VENT with J.Crew" post, a place to share our not-so-stellar experiences with J.Crew.

If you have recently experienced a frustrating situation with J.Crew, maybe you might be willing to share that information with us in this post.

Please feel free to share your story on almost any topic— including poor experiences with purchases & orders, promotions/ offers, in-store visits, transactions with store associates, etc.

  1. I placed 4 more orders tonight, though to be fair 3 were for my husband! I guess my vent is that the men's deals were so good compared to the women's! Seriously...button down shirts for $8, khakis for $10...a whole work outfit for under $20! I am going to have to explain myself to our mailman when literally 10 packages show up over the next couple of weeks!

    1. Hope you noticed the GOFORIT code is still working! Sometimes the last code stays valid for a couple hours after midnight. I got the Mr. a black stewart shirt for $8. Not as good as the $4 ones, but still nice.

    2. I did! I live on the west coast so I often take advantage of the magic hour between promos.

  3. Thank goodness the 60/70 sale is finally over. The nice thing is that my perspective is now all skewed and 50% off this morning seemed unexciting.

I think the gentlemen on the frugal male fashion Reddit are feeling the very same mixed emotions that many JCAs are feeling

    A couple good lines:

"Don't be like me. Slept at 10PM and went to work at 9AM like productive human being during this entire sale cycle. Managed to miss all the sales and feel regret for the rest of my life."

"Every once-in-a-while a sale like this comes along and resets my idea of value."

  4. I bought the boys Ludlow blazer which I’ve been stalking for months. Yesterday my 5 year old was very upset that I “got” to get dressed up and wear a blazer to work, while I wanted him to wear a sweater. He brought the blazer on its hanger in to me while I was putting on makeup, explaining why it wasn’t fair.
I paid $18, go for it was still working at 2am.
I think that’s a fair price. For a blazer to wear to kindergarten.

    1. Awww.. that's cute!

My nephew is also a dress up kind of guy. He insisted on wearing a full suit and tie to Thanksgiving dinner. He wears button down shirts and ties to school a lot too. He's 8.

      Delete
    2. oh that's adorable. My son used to wear ties and sometimes tie+jacket to kindergarten...think he wanted to be different! Now he's 13 and all sweatshirts and jeans every day :(

    3. So fun, Cheri When my 3-year-old tries on clothes I got for him, he likes to check himself out in the mirror, and sometimes say "I'm so handsome" haha

      @Julie I bet he'll come around again :)

    4. Thank you ladies! Shirt and tie in both his preschool and kindergarten class pictures. I has been begging me for a suit and I purchased one for Christmas but held it back because he was overwhelmed with his bounty (divorced parents plus grandparents equal three Christmasses) and it's been so cold in NJ. He is a trip. And he LOVES fashion and J. Crew.
Miss JR, you give me hope for the next few years!
Julie, I am quite sure mine will be the same way. We can only hope they come back around!
Sarah, I had to tell everyone to stop telling him that! At 3, it's still adorable! Mine was getting conceited lol

  5. I’ve got a lot going on in my personal life so I have completely avoided all the sales, except for a chateau parka for 120. Today, I tried to check out at factory for 2 winter coats for my big girls. With the extra 20% off and no price change, the coats came to 30 a piece. Score! Except I can’t check out due to a website issue. Ugh!!! Jcrew!!!!

    2. So I saw someone wearing the city coat in grey from factory. It was a darker grey.... the lodge coat in grey very washed out and light...
The coats today are $39 after all the discounts.... any thoughts on it? Thanks all

    3. @Suz all good things :). The biggest project of my career is rolling out in 2 weeks and something good st home too but nothing finalized yet (I’m superstitious and can’t put it in print yet lol).

@Kate I have the factory vail parka and it’s nice. It runs smal through the hips and for my pear shape isn’t comfortable. But retail coats don’t run small in the hips in my normal size so that’s why I have stuck with retail coats. Just my 2 cents though.

      Delete
    4. Thanks! I have retail chateu parka that I actually sized down on... I love it... I did like the grey lodge coat just not the color..., this seems darker...however my lodge was only $60 during that crazy promo.... so not sure 40 is worth the factory price ...lol

  7. I fully admit to still checking sale but didn't spend quite as long looking and I finished my workout done on time this morning and I may actually leave the house for work on time. So thank you J.Crew. There is still so much stock though, makes me wonder how long we'll see those velvet tanks lingering in the sale section a la the off the shoulder ruffle tops from last year and the like.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I'm intrigued by these velvet tanks - I have no desire to own one, but why are they available in almost a full size run for every color? It doesn't look like the worst top ever, but I figured for $10 or less they'd sell out like most other dirt-cheap-but-questionable pieces. This is where I think they're missing opportunities with the lack of a style guide: if there was a pic of a model looking happy and stylish in one of these tanks, they'd be gone. Has Gayle left JC too? I don't recall hearing that.

      Delete
    2. I think they put out too many velvet tops this season - the tank, sleeveless mockneck, wrap top, etc. As far as I know Gayle is still there.

re: slow shipping noted below...same here. I'm getting single items shipped now and have lost track of what I still have outstanding. I keep thinking I'm going to get cancelation emails and so far (knock on wood) have only had one order canceled.

      Delete
    3. I bought two of the velvet tanks: navy/stars and tartan. I didn’t get a rock bottom price on the stars tank as I bought it before the holidays, but as I *love* star prints I wanted to be sure I got one. For the tartan I was intrigued from the beginning, but waited for the price to bottom out when the 70% sale hit. It was partly a consolation prize as I managed to stop myself from buying the velvet tartan dress, (even at $30 I knew I’d never, ever have a chance to wear it….sigh). But I’m sure I can find an opportunity for the tartan tank next December. So I agree, they did too much velvet this year, and I’m a real sucker for velvet. The tanks are classics, but I already have classics in all the solid colours I’d ever need (and enough for a few friends). The prints were the only standouts in their velvet line-up for me this year.

      Delete
    4. I got the exact same two velvet tanks and returned both despite the rock bottom prices. They fit weird on me - too long and loose around the waist but slightly pulling at the armpits even though I’m quite small chested. The star print was cute, the tartan was a little dark. I would have kept if the fit were better.

      Delete
  8. Tortoise-slow shipping continues. I’ve lost track of how many orders I’ve placed during the 60-70%. Maybe 7-8, but they are all 1-2 items, mostly popbacks. The super slow shipping seems to have been pretty consistent ever since the free shipping w rewards started last year. I’ve definitely place more one-item orders w free shipping and I wonder if J Crew is just overwhelmed by more, smaller orders to process.

Anne, I laughed about the velvet tanks! I think that every time I look at sale. 50% off seems like a non-starter now so I think I’m officially done for awhile.

  9. venting about some of my items I didn't like:
Item J8824, boy shirt in Pacey plaid.. it's flannel! Nowhere in the description does it say it's flannel. This strikes it from year round wear, and based on the other JC flannel I bought this Winter it will pill and looks years old after 1-2 washes.
Item J8061 no 2 pencil in 4 season stretch - was happy to find in tall size but the fabric just feels sooo cheap and polyester-y, like a bad Herb Tarlek 70s poly. Clung to my thighs/rear in a most unflattering way. Thought I had gained weight...tried on some other no 2 pencils in the same size and they fit fine in that area... weird. Puzzled by the rave reviews.
Item J6357 point sur pointelle knit cardigan in subtle pink. So itchy. I should have heeded the few negative reviews. I have a high tolerance for scratchy yarns and this is unbearable. this was FS so will try and tolerate for around the house wear. Final sale is such a gamble and losses are unavoidable.

    1. Sorry you had so many duds, Julie. I have so far resisted one of the point Sure pointer sweaters despite loving the color scheme and being short on cozy sweaters. Some said it was itchy, and I would have ordered, but thankfully kept thinking of the J.Crew wool sweater I just parted with because I loved the look but could never take it off fast enough as soon as I got home. I love wool, and make allowances, but as you said, some are intolerable. Thanks for adding to my willpower!

      Delete
    2. @Julie Taylor - If you call and calmly explain the issues with the items, they should let you return some/all of your duds, especially the undisclosed flannel. Some people have even successfully shipped final sale orders back without calling first.

      Delete
    3. Sarah, it *did* look so cozy online didn't it? Such a cute retro look too, but wow, you have to wonder if anyone "test drives" some of these things for any length of time before they sell them.
Jeanne, thanks for the tip, luckily only the sweater was final sale, so once I get the rest of my orders (haha) I can sort thru and hopefully just send one box of returns.
I definitely had some loves in all the sale items too: buffalo check shirt-jacket, rib mockneck t shirt, boy shirt in signature tartan...lots of winners :)

  10. Got 3 package yesterday
Liberty puffer -this was exchange....got xs... like it a lot for spring....
velour pants- grey and black, got for me and 16byrs old daughter-we both love the grey. I did not try the black in XS.... but my daughter did try blacks d they ran smaller then the grey and shorter( she is 5.9)
Cashmere mock neck in grey size XS k4563... not bad... body was thicker plush cashmere, sleeves much thinner, neck little tight. But the sleeves were oddly large.... didn’t look good...paid $53-return
Cashmere waffle sweater k2453... not bad this was also exchange to xxs— fit good.. hubby thinks it’s big... I will think about it... for now it’s in my returns pile... I like the light blue color...
also got 2 T-shirt’s - little striped one with pink color and the navy NYC-love them both
Still have 2 orders not shipped and 2 traveling to me....
I do have to say I am enjoying my captoe booties and the Sherpa lined boots very much!!! I have wore uggs and changed into shoes for the last 3-4 years....so this is a style change ...lol

    2. Already said elsewhere, but people seem happy with the gray, whereas I loved the black at first but they've washed terribly. For $35 a regret. At first I wanted to order a back-up pair, now I'm so glad I didn't.

    3. Agree.... I did not see reviews on the black velour sweatpants until I ordered. Definitely keeping grey they were under $20.
My daughter did not want the velour sweatshirt( pull on), but instead we ordered velour lined zippered one...hoping it will arrive today.

    4. I ordered some velvet velour joggers from Gap and they are pretty in a navy/purple shade. I have not washed them yet, though. At $20 the price was fair. I think they are sold out in Small and XSmall in both regular and tall, but things do popup again.

  14. OT but does anyone still look at fashion magazines? For years I got stacks and then basically stopped even looking at them. With Pinterest and IG, unless I needed it for work I don't see a need, I love looking at pics but for my own lifestyle I kind of prefer either what's being worn on the street or just looking at runway shots for fun/inspiration.

Even more OT, same re home magazines. And I do interior design work, I just prefer the house and it's inhabitants speak to me than following trends.

    1. Funny you should mention this, I was thinking about this the other day as I canceled my inStyle subscription after all they have done is collect dust for the last few years. I will pick them up if I'm going to be on the beach or something but I'm sad to say if I'm on the couch not watching the TV I'm surfing IG or Pinterest (mostly IG, I never got in to Pinterest much). The only magazines I get are cooking ones and my favorite, Cooking Light, stopped distribution at the end of 2018. For some reason, I still love reading recipes in magazines and cookbooks.

      Delete
    2. @SuzHas - I really like the idea of magazines, but not so much the reality. Over the past few years I ordered several different fashion, food and lifestyle magazines, mostly using free promotions from Recyclebank. But, like Anne, the issues piled up and collected dust without being read.

      Delete
    3. I am down to just People magazine after years of subscribing to many, and that sits and sits until I bring a stack into work and force myself to flip through them on my lunch hour. Like Anne, if I'm not on a beach, I have zero interest.
I do love to read and have always used magazines as an escape from a book. Now I guess Instagram has replaced that.
As far as fashion, there is really no need when you can watch live fashion shows many times! Why wait for publication dates?

      Delete
    4. I've been terrible with books too...sigh. I use Pinterest to save ideas, I. Like how it's more organized than IG.

      Delete
    5. I used to love cutting ideas out and making scrapbooks for different rooms. Now I can find everything online and make a board for each concept.

      Delete
    6. My only paid subscription is Architecture Digest. I keep the current issue around until the next shows up, and do go through it completely. It is a design, not an architecture, magazine.

I also seem to get these random unsolicited free magazines. I got inStyle for a while, which I did enjoy but did not pay for after the year ended. Now I get Shape, which is not about fitness at all, but really about makeup.

Also Good Housekeeping, AllRecipes, Family Circle, Parents (? I'm a little old for that market, more like AARP ?) and maybe others. Are they trying to get me to buy them? I never do, so I don't know why there are so many.
I do go through inStyle when I'm on the step climber, and will look any any fashion magazine I find at the gym. I also drop the unsolicited magazines at the gym where they do get read and eventually recycled.

  16. OT - I wish there was a way I could upload my Ebay listings to Poshmark. I've been selling on Ebay for 20 years and lack the oomph to start over.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. On topic for me! I have sold my unwanted items on ebay for years and consistently sold about 10-20 items per month. The past few months it has been terrible. I decided two weekends ago to start to cross post the items to Posh. I couldn't use any of my ebay photos as posh uses the square instagram style photo and it cut off my photos. So basically I have to retake photos of all my ebay items to list on Posh. The only good thing to come out of it is that it really makes me examine my purchasing as I don't want to go through the hassle of listing so many things ever again. I am all about donating things when they are not in like new/excellent condition but I have a difficult time donating brand new items or things like cashmere that was worn five or ten times tops. I made only one Posh sale so far and don't have a ton of time for the social aspect of it, plus they take 20% so I would prefer to keep using ebay. We will see how it goes. It seems a lot of ladies here have had luck with Posh so I will give it some time.

      Delete
    2. just donate it . then you will definitely not rebuy more stuff,

      Delete
    3. Thank you for sharing your perspective and experience Jess! I have not been having luck lately either. I am all for donating as well, but would like to try to sell my higher end items first. Once I take pictures and hang everything back up, I like to forget about it...

Unknown, that comment was snarky and unnecessary. I have donated at least 100 items in the past few weeks and you have no idea of what I'm "rebuying". If you have nothing nice or helpful to say, kindly keep your comments to yourself.

    7. Sometimes it's too easy to "just donate". There's a greater chance of it being tossed out. When someone purchases it, it has a better chance of being loved. Just my opinion. I still give things away because it's less work. This doesn't affect how or why I'm a more mindful shopper.

@Unknown, do you plan to wear your current clothing until it falls apart and then go naked? Lol. We adore J.Crew here. It isn't a minimalist group. Please take yourself to one of those. I may even see you there. It please, not here anymore.

    8. @Cheritheberry @Jess F - I also donate a lot of cheaper and more worn items but attempt to sell the newer and more expensive items, or at least give them to a friend or relative. I’ve sold on Ebay in the past but currently only on Poshmark. I feel like it’s easier to sell in PM, but I could be wrong since it’s been a while since I sold on Ebay. I know it sounds petty, but I hate to donate things that are likely to be scooped up by resellers and resold for $$$. I’d almost prefer to throw them in the trash.

I see I’m not the only one annoyed by the concern troll. I would love to have the option to block that posters and the bizarre moving guys from Bangalore.

  17. I feel like someone with a split personality these days. Daytime: purge and organize belongings. Order must be restored. Nighttime: stalk J Crew site, purchasing things I never cared about or needed at full price, even if they aren’t my size (hello, XXL beach dress I somehow ordered during what must have been a disassociative state).

Speaking for myself, the only positive in these nighttime shopping binges is that I wake up feeling guilty and wanting to rid my closet of unnecessary items (and that almost none of these impulse buys are final sale). I must get a handle on this bad habit. As others have shared, I feel my shopping is somewhat fueled by the concern that J Crew may not be around much longer.

    1. I am sticking with my "no stockpiling" theme for these greatly discounted items. I remind myself everyday....that i have enough perfect fit tee shirts. we will all find other places t shop if J crew goes down the tubes. its just clothing...

    2. Wendy you described me exactly! January purging and cleaning and then JC binging.. sigh! Sometimes I feel like stuff is flowing IN and OUT of my closet so fast I am losing any sense/cohesion of personal style. Thinking of writing all this down, then trying a 60 (?) day shopping ban so I can do a little reset, get a sense of what I actually HAVE and USE then a sense of what I want/need and go from there. phew, haha.

      Delete
    3. This is exactly how I’m feeling! I was thinking of buying one hoody for example (just for lounging) but now I’ve bought 3. I needed a winter hat but now I’ve bought 2 cashmere beanies. The list goes on... I’m feeling like a hoarder. I think I needed some retail therapy from work stress and the deals have been good so it’s a bad combo. It’s a bit of an addiction I guess as each day I’m thinking let’s not buy anything today... one day at a time.

    4. Jan, Ithe 60/70 percent off definitely caused me to go a little more crazy than usual, loving the brand (even through all the growing flaws of the last decade), seeing those great prices, very hard to resist. Also as others have mentioned, fear of J Crew going out of business and wanting to buy while I can. This month has been insane for sales, and look at all the action here on the JCA boards this month. :D I'm feeling like a hoarder too, and I also bought multiples of the cashmere beanie (and other things). I'm very relieved the big sales are over and I'm definitely ready for some time off from the daily website checks.

  18. Today I received the Stewart plaid flats with the big black bow. LOVE. I ordered my larger size and they're perfect. I have the thomas Mason Stewart plaid flannel (paid $$$$) and the scale is larger but colors are similar and it works well with the red plaid too. I've wanted a paid of plaid shoes and though I liked the ankle strap ones too the flats will come in handy I'm sure.

Red plaid funnelneck with the sparkly buttons, will mostly use for layering under sweaters, not sure I can throw away my shredded red tartan tuxedo top yet...I'll have to see how this works. With the buttons closed it's perfectly fine but opening them all doesn't really work well with the design of how the buttons lay. Most likely I wouldn't do that anyway because it's not worth going braless or wearing a strapless.

Wide leg crop ponte pants. Fit is weird on me, they're going back. Fabric is nice, they can almost pass as dress pants, but I don't like the fit.

    1. I felt the same way about the tartan flats when I got them last week - I'm really glad I have them. That being said - I know this has been discussed in the past - how much longer in to the season would you wear these? For me, the Stewart plaid is more of a holiday plaid to me and then I'm done with it. I'll wear black watch up through March or so but I tend to be done with the stewart by now.

      Delete
    2. Yay for new plaid shoes! I have been admiring those of late. I prefer them to the ankle strap pair, personal preference. The juxtaposition of the bow I guess.
I ordered that shirt on the 12th and it's scheduled to arrive tomorrow, the 24th. Not sure if I'll be able to make it work, given the funnelneck problems of yore...Would love to see pictures! Although liking things on you is not difficult. :)
Shame about the pant, money saved!

      Delete
    3. Anne, not sure! I don't care just holding on to them until next year, but if I wear the thomas Mason top and weather permits I'll wear these too. I like the pop of red so it works. Even just with my usual black sweater and jeans, adding the plaid won't be over the top.

Cher, I didn't try the top with blue jeans but that's easy and simple. I kind of have to tuck the top but with looser jeans it's not a big deal. I tried the shoes and top together with the white jeans and it could work too. I layered last year's fair isle on top and it was fine, the sleeves are long enough that it works.

Yes, glad to add the pants to my return pile.

  20. After all the discussion about the Nordic boots yesterday, I wore mine to work today. I am wearing a sweater dress and tights and I am realizing I'm not reaching for these because they definitely just fit. I'm really a true 9.5 in J.Crew and I think the 10s would have been too big. They are really warm and comfortable but I don't know if they'll feel good with a thicker sock. I'm also a little slow in realizing that the sides fold up/down. They came out of the box folded and I JUST realized that I can fold them up to make them taller and solve my pants creeping out of my boot issue with them.

Returning the 25T pair that flattened my butt. Which is a difficult feat, truthfully.
My problem is, I like every shoe with my boyfriend jeans, but I can only wear those on weekends. My legs are smaller than the shaft opening, so my skinny jeans bag and bunch when I tried tucking them in. They’re 90% going back. Wah

    8. I still haven’t worn my snakeskin mules, and I’m second guessing the purchase. I probably should have waited for the boots, since Wisconsin is basically Antarctica half the year.

    9. I am returning a size 7 if you want them, Monica!

    10. Thanks— I’m 8.5/9, so my hunt continues 😊

  22. I received two packages today. The Faded Vine camo print tall boyfriend chinos (2T) I like. With my poor swollen abdomen they barely button, which means they will be loose if it ever goes back down. I like the muted colors, the lighter fabric, the comfy loose fit.

I also received the 26 tall cargo toothpick. Even though these are marked final sale I am going to try to return them. They are so small I can not even get them past my knees! This is the recommended 'true fit' size, and my usual J Crew pants size.

    1. @p banos, I've had that same problem with every single try-on of J.Crew cargo pants and toothpicks (cargo and denim) over the years. Not getting them halfway up makes me feel totally enormous (and I'm typically a 0 in bottoms). I have to go up like 3 sizes, but then they look ratched. Lol. I stay away to protect my ego ;)

    2. @Sarah J - thanks! They should reflect reality with the 'true fit', or it just is not 'true'!

    3. Does anyone find the “true fit” function to be at all accurate or helpful? For me, it almost always recommends the wrong size, usually 1-2 sizes too large, even when I’ve previously purchased the exact item multiple times in a smaller size. Once it suggested that I buy size 2X. 😡 I feel like I’m being bullied. 😢

    4. The true fit is wrong a lot of times for me... Yes, even suggesting much larger sizes then I've ever bought for myself or as gifts.

  23. I thought I was going to get through the day without an order, but then I received my Parke velvet blazer in navy. I had waited and waited until I could get it on sale and without final sale conditions. I tried on the blazer - and I loved it. Of course, the only natural next step was to see what was in stock today in my size. Oh, of course, they have the dried rose and black available today in my size! Oh, of course, they are not final sale. Of, of course, order was placed.

Given the heavy discounting, the $100 Cdn price for the dried rose jacket seemed a little steep (the black one was $65) but I love that dried rose color so much online that I caved. I am torn being hoping that I love the jackets when they arrive or that I am disappointed.

    1. Not gonna lie, my rose one sparks joy whenever I even see if hanging in the blazer area on my rolling rack in the basement. I have worn it twice and received many compliments on the color also. Not something you're going to find again!
