J.Crew Reviews {straight from the JCAs!}

This is the weekly "J.Crew Reviews {straight from the JCAs}" post, to help each other share our reviews.

So if you have recently purchased, or stopped by a J.Crew store to try on an item (or two) from J.Crew, maybe you might be willing to share that information with us in this post.

Also, this request is not just limited to clothes. Please feel free to discuss bags, shoes, jewelry, accessories, etc.

In particular, if you could mention a few of the noteworthy details like fit, size, fabric, and the like— that would be fantastic! Thanks in advance! :)

  2. As JCAs predicted - today its an extra 60% off sale items. (There do appear to be some exclusions from the extra % off because they are not marked.)

Trying to be strong. So far, put some finds in my cart but happy to say that I did not check out. But I can't pat myself on the back too much - I didn't delete the items from the cart. Baby steps...

    3. @Toronto Modern - I know I’m not ordering anything else, so I’m not even going to check the website. The same goes for all my other favorite stores and websites. Unless I’m shopping for something specific, I know I have no business browsing.

  4. I ordered some items I’ve wanted: Liberty melody floral pj top, Parke wool blazer in green and Collection stripe shirting skirt. Used my 25% off coupon & calling for PAs, so very happy with what I’ve spent. Small update to sale section.

    1. @Mygoddy - I think you’ll like the green tweed Parke blazer. I have it and it’s beautiful! It’s one of my favorites.

    2. @Jeanne Glad to know you’re pleased with the blazer. Hopeful it works for me too since I don’t buy a lot of blazers.

  5. Hang in there, TM! When I'm trying not to shop, I wear favorite items from my closet that day.

It's not a new book, but The Curated Closet is great if you like to read about clothes, style, and strategies for paring down your wardrobe without going totally minimalist. I don't know what my ultimate clothing goals for 2019 are yet. I haven't worked in an office for 7 years so every year I'm tempted to get rid of the pencil skirts, blazers, heels, etc.... but I feel that the second I do, I'll have to go back into the office. Plus, the quality on most of the pieces I have is great so I figured I'd be better off just keeping them and storing them well (but not adding too much to what's already in storage!).

I may also get back to doing some thrifting this year. There is a LOT of crap at the thrift shop, mainly because quality is so poor in a lot of stores and then it goes to the SA in even worse shape - but if you have the patience to look, you can find some great things. Last fall I got a new Rowenta iron for $3 and have been ironing everything in my closet, ha! I have a lot of fun memories of thrifting with friends, or my mom.

Re-thinking ways to have shopping fun without getting into the JC cycle, mainly because I've spent so much on return shipping in 2018 (I'm afraid to calculate, but may force myself to do it). I'm sure I've spent more in $7.50 return labels than in what I eventually ended up keeping. I wish I liked more at Madewell because their free shipping AND free returns is a nice perk.

End New Year musings! Happy 2019, all! : )

    2. @silver_lining - I LOVE the Curated Closet book! After taking it out of the library several times, I finally purchased both the book and workbook a couple months ago.

Another book I really like that I’ve borrowed from the library multiple times: The Hoarder In You by Dr. Robin Zasio. While I’m not a hoarder (I took the test in the book, lol), I could identify when she discussed compulsive accumulating and shopping. I like to keep my home and wardrobe clean and organized, but I’d say I still have some slight hoarding tendencies.

    3. Hi Jeanne - I did the same thing with the book (took it out a bunch of times, then bought it)! Will check out The Hoarder in You!

  6. Thanks for the words of support, silver-lining. and "Unknown". It's a few hours later and I still have not checked out (or even gone back to look at the cart or the J Crew website so I'm feeling good right now)... baby steps!

Silver-lining. I did read The Curated Closet, and found the ideas very interesting, but I ended up being too lazy to do the exercises/home work. Which makes no sense at all given that I am able to blow hours mindlessly surfing on line. As my teenage son once pointed out to me, if I add up all the hours I spent looking at J. Crew's website, I could probably have mastered another language. He doesn't even know about the hours I've spent on hold for customer service :-) ! I guess that's part of my problem - buying something online seems (on its face) to be so easy compared to thinking about a more disciplined approach to shopping and consumption.

In terms of return costs - have you considered using PayPal for your online purchases? They cover return shipping costs 12 times a year, up to $30 per refund. It's head scratching to me why they offer this benefit and I am sure at some point common sense will make they stop offering it. It's very easy to claim the refund too and very fast to get your money back. But it is still a little bit of time. I think that for Americans the cost of the return labels is probably high enough to be an irritant, but not high enough for some people to justify any time in getting it back, whereas it can cost $20-30 for Canadians to mail stuff back to a retailer, making it definitely worth my while to claim a refund from PayPal.

    Replies
    1. Please don't be put off by the reference to it taking a bit of time - it's only a few minutes to take the photo of the label or receipt and fill out the online form for the Paypal refund. But I can see that this might still be too much bother for some people.

    2. hop J CA's are having good luck with getting PA's. been . funny because the 10 day shipping is business days but not the 7 days pa's. so glad to not be returning/asking for pa's or waiting for pkgs.!!
TO Modern...I am one displeased Canadian shopper for the past 2mths now. J Crew has now official wore me out. and I was one tough cookie!
**dropped some donations at my local thrift store yesterday. saw they have more j crew these days...and it wasn't my donations. but i have given them heaps of J Crew stuff lately.

    3. TM, I don’t think you are alone in pondering the amount of time, resources and life energy “wasted” stalking popbacks, buying, returning, securing PAs, on hold w CS, and compulsively checking the J Crew website and even this blog. J Crew has always been a small but happy hobby for me, but I do tend to take a break from shopping in Jan/Feb and focus on bigger priorities.

I do feel a little more remorse in recent years because the current J Crew is just not as wonderful or “worth it” as it has been in the past, but there really aren’t any other stores or brands that can replace it for me. For the next couple months, I will be shopping my closet and enjoying the extensive collection I have. Happy New Year, everyone!

      Delete
    4. my goal is for J Crew to be a small hobby and not the massive one it has been the last few years. one day at a time...or moe like one promo at a time. got through 40% 50% and now 60% with no ordering. I am trying very hard.
I do not find reading here what others are buying makes me want to purchase. It only makes me realize so many of us pay alot more for items...so many perks for some. this make me jealous/envious and this is not a great emotion...so its time for rethinking visiting blogs and IG's. so silly because it really is only clothing.....I guess i have some work to do.

    5. @unknown - I dropped some donations at Goodwill yesterday. The donation area was overflowing! The man working there told me that the week between Christmas and New Year is their busiest time as people want to get their donation receipts for tax preparation.

    6. Hi TM - that's good to know about PayPal. I remember when JC first started using it as a form of payment, some JCA's complained that their backordered items and/or returns weren't being processed correctly so it kind of put me off from using it. But if they've ironed out the kinks, then it sounds like a good deal for getting your return shipping covered. I'll take a look at it. Thanks! : )

    7. Hi, silver_lining. You're welcome. I mentioned this a couple of days ago in a posting and forgive me for repeating myself but (at least for me with my Canadian orders), there are a couple of times you can pick PayPal when you check out of J Crew's website. You may have seen it before, but in case you haven't, I'm just reposting below by cutting and pasting my previous post:

"For those JCAs who are having issues keeping track of refunds arising from returns and price adjustments - this is not a complete answer, but I've started paying with PayPal. I started paying with PayPal because they announced they were closing down the Toronto Eaton Center store so I wanted the ability to use the PayPal refund costs refund benefit in case I returned by mail, but I discovered an additional benefit to using PayPal. When J Crew (i-parcel) processes a refund, I get an email from PayPal telling me the amount of the refund and as an added bonus the email also give me the J Crew order number associated with the refund. This is so much better than wondering if the price adjustment went through and trying to go through the credit card statements and puzzle out what the price adjustment amount must have been for a particular order. Or calling the 1-800 number and waiting to ask whether the refund has gone through and for what amount.

Clearly, if I find it a pain to track the refunds I am buying too much! (But that's a post for another day) And PayPal is not a complete fix, but I am finding it helps a lot.

Please note that if you are paying with PayPal, you have two opportunities during the checkout process to pay with PayPal : (1) you can click the PayPal button instead of "check out now"; or (2) you can click "check out now" and then when it takes you to the payment options page, you can select PayPal. I only use the 2nd method because I remember a JCA mentioned that if you use the 1st method that the order doesn't end up in your complete history.

Please also note that I have never placed a US order so maybe things might be different for US orders placed via PayPal. Can any US JCAs confirm that US orders get the same refund emails from PayPal?"

  7. I'm glad I placed my order yesterday because basically everything I ordered is not available today. If I had another 25% off coupon I might have bought a few more things today, namely the embellished fair isle for about $27...but it's really not a need.

  8. I am considering the navy tweed suit.... but Ofcourse the skirt is gone I’m my size.... lol... any thought.... ( speaking at medical conference in San Diego in February-will it be weather appropriate or to winter ? )
Also....What’s the point of 60.... if nothing is available.... I did place 3 orders with 50.... so I did get some price adjustment.... FYI.... because I used the gift card I have to wait for item to ship to get an adjustment....

    2. How did you go about getting a price adjustment? Email? The email has been so slow.

    3. I think Kate means that the gift card purchases do not get applied/adjusted until some time after shipping. I had that with the $25 gift card, it was applied to a prior purchase and later I received another notification about the refund.

    4. @Suz Haz - I actually did a chat today.... which has been dead last few weeks... so been calling.... but the chat seems to be back to work... it’s always very convenient....

    5. Hi, Suz. I ask for my price adjustments via telephone. I also went through a period of sending emails, but I think I have had much more success via telephone so am back to the telephone. Sometimes when I used email I was told that because at the time they are looking into the price adjustment the item is out of stock that I am not eligible for the adjustment - which doesn't make sense to me. At the time I sent the email, it was in stock. Why am I no longer eligible because it took them a while to get to the email? I never disputed this because it just didn't seem worth the effort - I just went back to telephone. Sadly, chat is not an option for Canadian customers.

    1. I have the going out blazer and love it...have not gotten the skirt yet though. It is an incredibly dark navy so I have been pairing it with black and navy together but I think with a white blouse underneath it would also read less winter. In general, I don't think it's very wintery - it's a very thin jacket, not a heavy tweed at all. I think you'd be ok with it in February.

    2. Thanks!!! Very helpful!!!! Skirts are all gone... I am sure they will come back there was full stock yesterday... ((I was shared a coupon from JCA -Sarah -)) and I need a suit very much!!

Any thoughts on the zippered tweed?

      Thanks all...

    3. Kate - I tried the going out tweed blazer in speckle navy and thought it ran a size smaller than the other going out blazers. I have P4 going out blazers from last year in stretch twill as well as the (non-stretch) velvet versions from last year in the same size. (Yes, I am using plural for both types which is a sad statement.) I tried the P4 in the tweed and thought I should actually go up a size for the back and shoulders. Most reviewers online seem to feel that it runs true to size, so maybe I am an anomaly.

  10. Happy New Year JCAs! A little late in posting holiday cheer...I'm still catching up on posts as I tried to unplug a bit over the holidays. I hope everyone who celebrated had a great holiday.

I didn't do much shopping in general post-holiday but did pick up a few things this morning with gift cards I received - a few summer dresses for a beach vacation in a few weeks (navy midi slip dress and black ruffle eyelet dress both $20ish) and the glen plaid Daphne topcoat. I was bummed that my birthday month "gift card" which is really a promo code didn't stack so I may see if my store will do it for me since I'm not sure how much luck I'll have online/over the phone.

As others have said, J.Crew can be an all consuming hobby sometimes. I still find things to love but it seems to take a lot more energy to do so. I want to continue to try to wear and love more of what I have and not acquire so much in the course of a year. I love reading here and contributing to this community though so between this and Instagram, things can be tempting. As with most things, it's about finding the right balance.

    1. Hi, Anne. I agree with you 100%. Some people feel that the only answer is to go "cold turkey", but I really like this community and don't want to cut myself off entirely. I can go to a buffet and not over-indulge (ok, not over indulge excessively). I am hoping to take the same mind-set into my shopping.

95% of the time, I don't even bother looking at other retailers. But J Crew is my kryptonite.

      Delete
    2. @Toronto Modern - I also try to avoid buffets and restaurants as I tend to overeat the unhealthy food and then I feel like crap for days. I do so much better if I stick to only eating my own healthy, low salt, lower calorie cooking. I’m not sure what that says about me.

      Delete
    3. I only look at deeply discounted sale items. That keeps my spending down considerably. Plus I buy clothing for my mom, husband, adult stepchildren and friends. The kids love it when I go shopping for them!

  11. I did select a few pants at clearance prices, since I've been ill my 4s are falling off. I measure between a 0 and 2, but went with 2s in case I fill out again. I picked out the high rise wide wale corduroys in tall, polka dot chinos in olive, and a second pair of elephant Marties (in 2T to replace my too big 4T) and a pair of navy and black Marties in 2T. That will get me through the winter and into warm weather as well! They were all between $12 and $18, so not a lot of $$ total.

  12. I haven’t bought anything with the 60% off, I’m trying to be better about purchases because I bought a ton around Christmas. Some winners for me were:
Mockneck cashmere sweater in grey (with the ribbed front and back)-I like the longer length (not cropped) and the cashmere is plush/thicker than most of their cashmere. I wore it on Christmas Day and it was cozy. I took my smaller sweater size since it said relaxed, it’s still a bit relaxed.

Mockneck fairisle cashmere sweater in navy/pink- I took my smaller sweater size and it’s still a little relaxed. I Iike the length (not cropped) and this one is plush cashmere also. The top of the sleeves make me look a little wider due to the fairisle knitting (you can see that in the model pic) so I was considering returning it. Returns are such a pain now since the store that was 1 hr away closed and it’s nice and plush so I’ll likely just keep it as it is a nice cozy sweater.
Lace pintucked pencil skirt in lilac - I have the green from two years ago and took the same size this year. The lilac looked more pink online than IRL (def very lilac IRL) - I was hoping for more pink in the tone but either way it’s pretty and well done.
Classic boy shirt in silk poppy print- I took my smaller size which was the right call. This one sold out quickly online for Canada. The print is very pretty and I don’t have a lot of red in my wardrobe so it was a nice change. At first I wasn’t sure about the color as it was very tan when I was expecting ivory background but it looks fine on my fair complexion. The silk is quite thin so it seems more delicate.
I also picked up the blue black 10” toothpicks on sale in my usual toothpick size. The color is a dark navy, I like them as they’re a little different. Reviews mentioned the dye bleeding so I’m a little worried. I’ve washed them but haven’t worn them yet.

    1. When you wash overdyed dark denim turn inside out, cold water, and a cup of white vinegar. Hang dry. This helps set the dye.

    2. @p banos - That’s a good tip. Another tip I read online recently that I found helpful: if a sweater is shedding excessively, seal it in a plastic bag and place it in the freezer overnight. I was very surprised to find that this simple trick eliminated the shedding almost completely. I’ve actually donated beautiful otherwise flawless sweaters due to this issue.

  13. I received my 4 items from the buymore promotion just before Xmas.

Tall cotton voile popover shirt in floral block print in Coral Multi: a very pretty top but very sheer despite the colour and pattern. Fit is TTS but boxy. Boxy is probably good as sheer and fitted would not be flattering.

Tall printed velvet tank in Navy Caramel (stars print): fit is TTS, but at 5’9” it was only just long enough for me in 12T. Tank is nothing special fabric or cut-wise, but I love stars so I bought it for that alone.

Reversible puffer jacket in Liberty® floral in Pink Fushia Multi: I bought this on impulse when the price dropped. I like it but don’t love it. As reviewed, fits very large, I’m usually a L/12 but the Medium fits me well. I love Liberty prints but because of the boxy/double-breasted cut the floral side looks kind of bathrobe-like to me so I’ll probably wear the khaki side more often. It’s a very lightweight jacket, “puffer” seems like a bit of a stretch, so I’m glad I only paid $100 CAD.

Suede penny sandals in Bright Cerise. Fit is TTS, I didn’t really need them but loved the colour and block heel.

  14. I haven't been checking in on JC lately but of course the after Christmas sales are tempting... what's the deal on the silk Blythe blouse? I feel like there must be something wrong with it since it's available in all sizes? Any feedback? Sizing? Fit? Sorry, tried searching older review pages!

    1. I got it in black and love it. Haven't worn it yet but I paid a reasonable price. The silk has sort of a washed look. I didn't see current price so I'll check now. I posted about sizing in the past, I think I took my usual.

    2. Actually I got 2 of them in the summer and returned them immediately as they were so thin they were ripping juts from trying. I did get 2 now, they have a different label inside, it’s green and says Jcrew Always.... they are great!!! Thick silk. TTS. And lays nicely....got dark grey and like a beige/grey....

Last night I did buy a navy tweed speckle suit for $60 for both skirt(came back in size 2 after midnight) and jacket and a regent topcoat in Heather acorn for $70.... ( thanks Sarah for the coupon) .... keep you all posted

    3. I just checked the one I got in black. It's the same as the current style number. I don't find the silk to be thin, I'd say it's probably a tiny bit smaller than true to size. I didn't buy the tall because it said that was 29" length but the regular length and sleeves are a little short for my long torso and arms, but it will work fine. The silk has a nice sheen and definitely has a washed look. (I'm tempted to get the tall in black as well for the price)

      Delete
    4. I also have the black silk Blythe and like the casual washed look. I bought a 6, the larger of my shirt sizes. This gave me adequate sleeve length. I got mine at the Shop Like Black Friday event, which was 60% off as well, and I do not think the price has changed.

  17. Wide leg,cropped wool pant:
Adding this to the reviews. I previously posted that I bought the wide leg cropped knit pant. It's merino wool and for the price (about $25 or so) I bought them to wear around the house instead of my usual leggings or sweats. For years I'd been thinking about cashmere sweats or a robe, since while I'm at home I'm generally in some type of lounge or athletic wear in the cooler months. These are perfect for that. I wanted them loose and sized up to a small.
The natural material is so much more comfortable than fleece. It's not hot but it keeps you warm. The pants actually look nice with my Madewell tanks and if I get cold I have a gazillion wool sweaters I can toss on and look decent. I may buy a second pair and throw away some of my older loungewear.

    1. My mistake, it's actually just called the cropped knit pant, which doesn't do the material justice. It's actually a nice, not itchy wool.
