J.Crew Reviews {straight from the JCAs!}

This is the weekly "J.Crew Reviews {straight from the JCAs}" post, to help each other share our reviews.

So if you have recently purchased, or stopped by a J.Crew store to try on an item (or two) from J.Crew, maybe you might be willing to share that information with us in this post.

Also, this request is not just limited to clothes. Please feel free to discuss bags, shoes, jewelry, accessories, etc.

In particular, if you could mention a few of the noteworthy details like fit, size, fabric, and the like— that would be fantastic! Thanks in advance! :)

  1. OMG Women's sale section was 3000+ items! I was very very good and only bought a non-final sale hair tie lol. The Italian Cashmere popbacks were sadly not in my size. There was briefly the scarf print dress that looked so good on Anne that I was tempted to buy for $27.20 even though I've previously tried it on and know I needed the petite, and I think a size down from the popback. Fortunately it sold out before I could check out. =)

    1. Also, I love the new Mayapple print...which only comes in swimwear. Grr. The rest of the rollout is a little meh but not disastrous. I see a "return to basics" but nothing that grabs me as a "I have to have it", especially not before sale.
I wishlisted the new tweed pencil skirt and some Liberty items and that's it.

    2. Oh, that print in a top would be so pretty.

I saw a couple new prints, but they are repeats of past silhouettes. Would like to see new, more thoughtful styles. This is just January though and it's typically not a great month for fashion so hoping for the best for spring.

  2. I caught it at 2598! Watching my favorite Frasier and remembered all the stories about early morning goodies. Filled my cart to the brim but only bit on a few non-f/s back-ups that popped up in my size. Gladly at 60% off. Thanks Mr. JC, whatever the reason!!

  4. I think J Crew must be noticing more people are not risking FS since I can't remember this level of aggressive discounting. Unless I already own it in a different color or have tried it on, I don't intend to bite. I was able to snag the Princess Mini in gold that I had originally ordered and returned because it ran way too small. It shipped, but that was over a week ago and still has a week to go before arrival. J Crew must be shipping via stagecoach because I can't imagine why it takes this long to ship to a next door state, maybe Narvar needed to take the time to swap out for a team of fresh horses for delivery. I think it took less time to receive items from a Montgomery Ward's catalog order in the 1890s.

    1. I won't do final sale either unless I've already tried it or own it. And even then, it better be one heck of a discount.

I don't understand what takes so long with first filling the order (I have 3 items just sitting in "placed." It's been a few days.) And then ship times. I understand shipping methods/times vary but I've gotten slow shipping items I've ordered later from other places much faster than most JCrew orders (if that makes sense).

As for new arrivals, a few cute things. I might try the boot cut patch pocket jeans but the rise is probably too high for me. But, as I keep saying, I need to stop shopping. Already deleted Starbucks app from my phone. Poshmark app is next. And then no JCrew February which I hope leads into no JCrew March.

  5. I should not have looked at the website this morning. I thought the 60% extra off promo had ended and I was safe. I was wrong as it was extended. Then I made the mistake of looking and a bunch of things had the final sale removed. Could not resist trying the glitter Mary Jane shoes in my size at $20. The ugly tally: 3 pairs of shoes, 2 pairs of jeans, 2 blazers and 1 dress for $312 Canadian total (including $12 shipping and the horrific sales tax and duties and no final sale). I know that this is all soo unnecessary and I still have other "too good a deal to pass up" boxes on the way. My poor closet.

Didn't find anything in the men's section for the men in my life, but now that I've discovered the Reddit frugal male fashion group, I suspect that they all got in there before me and saved me from the men's sale section. If only they would start shopping for the women in their lives

    2. Yes. It makes me want to join the hunt for the hot dog keychain which I had seen and previously ignored but suddenly it has become more desirable. There was also some fun talk a few days ago about the men's Union Suits and how they found them strangely fascinating. J Crew has had a number of union suits over the years. Check out this one.

      https://www.jcrew.com/ca/p/mens_category/underwearpajamas/unionsuits/jersey-union-suit-in-buffalo-check/K3518?sale=true&color_name=holiday-check

With the 60% discount, it's $12 Cdn marked down from over $100 Cdn!!! There's a large in stock right now and I am so tempted to get it for my husband except he would think I had gone insane.

One of the reviewers from Jan 2019 even posted a great picture.

    1. How do Maddie’s run in comparison to Martin or Cameron? I am late to the party here.... lol

      Delete
    2. I like my Camerons a lot, but the talls don't look right on me, and the regulars are too short for winter. Maddies are just right, they are my everything. Winter, spring, summer, fall. Boots, sandals, heels. I wear the same size in both. Marties you couldn't pay me to wear, they look awful on me.
      HTH!

      Delete
    3. Thanks .....So if I take 2 reg in Cameron in 4 season stretch and Zero on stretch cotton ones ? You think 4p or 2 reg would work vs zero? Thanks again

      Delete
    4. I wear the same size in the four season stretch camerons as the maddies, so for you I think the 2 regular. I think I 4 would be big, although I'm not sure with petite sizing...

      Delete
    5. Hi, Kate. This may confuse you even more but I wear 0P in Marties and Maddies but 2P in Camerons. (I've tried 0P and 2P in all of them.) Even when they fit, I have not always liked the way all of the various Cameron iterations have looked on me. But I love my Cameron bow stretch chinos H 2928 and the Cameron slim crop in stretch cotton H6746. (But unexpectedly hated the Cameron slim crop in four season stretch G9061 on me.) I think a lot depends on the fabric and I think that they do vary the cut a little from one Cameron style to the other. Bottom line, given how finicky pants can be to fit, I would advise avoiding a final sale situation and ordering a couple sizes. Even if I think I know what size I am in a particular style, with pants I have found that it's always best to pay a little extra for a non final sale situation.

      Delete
    6. Hi, Kate. To further confuse the issue I see that I went with 4P in H0716. They were not labelled Camerons online, but they had a Cameron label sewn in. I found the 2P too snug so went with 4P. All of this reinforces my point that pants can be very tricky!

  11. Damn I almost bought the nevereven D ring pants! 😂 I love harem pants seriously, so glad they disappeared.
Also the exposed button charcoal billies popped back and disappeared. Since I have two other crop flare jeans coming do I need a third? I haven't even be able to keep one pair.
And do I need gold sandals??? That is the question. Nordic boots for $54???

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I don't think you need gold sandals but Nordic boots are a strong possibility. I got the perfect boots with buffalo plaid for $46 last year and am happy to have them!
I ordered the polka dot chinos for $14 in a 2T. *hangs head in shame*

      Delete
    2. I'd put the money towards a pair of 'real' boots. Unless you wear them as 'fashion' boots, not expecting them to function as winter boots. But $50 towards some LLBean boots may money better spent. Just enjoy those red boots!

I tried the cross strap sandals in leopard last summer at some great sale price and returned immediately. The pair I received had back straps that were different lengths. But I did not bother to exchange. I had also ordered the leopard Cora's for like $8, and I kept those. I don't wear sandals very often and one pair should cover me for a long time.

      Delete
    3. @Cheritheberry, I have the polka dot chinos in 2T in olive. Adorable!

But I'd think you were more a 0T, if I am in a 2T? They are comfy roomy on me in 2T and I am a 2 in most pants. Since they are not final sale, you could get both to try.

    4. quality boots are always a good idea...cheap ones. never even at bargain prices. why are the prices so low. well quality would be my guess.

    5. P has a good point on the functionality...I did not think of that (oops).
I tried the 0 regular and they fit but not relaxed at all, they were tight! And I love my leopard coras.

    6. I have the Nordic boots and I love them. I find them amazing for walking in the snow or for sitting in ice rinks during hockey games and practices. I'm usually a 5H in the Ceces but bought 6 in the Nordic boots (since that's all that was available), and I think that was the right size as I always wear socks with them. (But I have never tried the LL Bean ones so I have no basis of comparison). According to my Stylebook app, since I bought them last winter I've got the cost per wear down to less than 50 cents per wear. But honestly, before I had these boots, when my feet were cold, I would have paid almost any amount of money to make them warm

      Delete
    7. Because I loved them so much, yes, I will admit to buying back ups (plural) on sale last year.

      Delete
    8. One of the many reasons why I love our community - the great testimonials! Toronto, I am glad your tootsies are warm.

P - I bought the 0T. I'm sure I'll have a ton to return, what's one more pair of pants. The Tall reviews said they ran large, maybe those were cut differently.

      Delete
    9. I have the black Nordic boots that I purchased for less than that last year and I've worn them twice so far. I have the sheepskin lined Sorel wedge boots and those are what I seem to reach for the most. My Nordic boots are a 9 (usually a 9.5 in J.crew) and I think I should have gotten a 10 in them as they are a little tight with winter socks so I think that's why I just haven't been going for them as often. They are super warm though I just personally like the Sorels since I don't have to worry about tucking long pants in to them, etc. The black ones come with red laces too (or at least mine did)

      Delete
    10. @Cheritheberry, better than being disappointed. Talls do have their own pattern, so could fit differently. The inseam is long enough I can wear them with loafers as full length.

      Delete

    11. Nordic boots are actually pretty great. Got em in Tan during the BF sale, and thought the price was solid at that point. DEFINITELY worth it now. If you’re into a heel, the wedge option is surprisingly awesome. I was shocked. They’re my favs!

      Delete
    12. I have bean boots in black with a deep, red, and I also have the sperry boots that have red laces. Those are actually almost worn out already. I wear them all the time to the gym in the winter, and to softball games when it's cold.
Anne, do you think I should wait for a better price? I don't need them for fashion, just for warmth, but if they don't really work with pants maybe it doesn't make sense. The black does come with red laces, both do, I love the brown but the black works more subtly with my clothes.

      Delete
    13. I stand corrected, I paid $50 for them last year so...not sure you're going to get much better! I mostly find that when I wear my suiting trousers, etc. I can't do flat boots since I usually wear heels with those pants so they don't work with my longer work pants. They are shorter cut so you just have to have your pant/sock situation figured out - I foolishly wore more ankle length jeans a few weeks ago and not long enough socks and I kept having to adjust my socks because my ankles were exposed. So perhaps user error since I know a ton of people love these boots!

  13. Saw the huge sale update. Ordered Liberty melody floral silk pj top again since I was sent a 00 silk pant bottom. Had to order up 1 since my usual size wasn’t available. Also ordered coastline wash denim in tall (really like J Crew jeans. Was hoping for a pop back. Find myself reaching for them more often than other brands I own. Also, ordered SZ Blockprints crop top. I’ll layer a white linen tank and wear with matching skirt. Nothing showed as final sake in my cart. Had other items in my cart, but ended up deleting them.

    1. Two out of three orders from today have already shipped. Yeah! Reviews on recent sale orders.

Navy velvet leggings. Was hoping to pair with a Vince velvet tunic in coastal from last year. Good quality, but J Crew’s navy is too light. Fit is tts.

Holiday stripe shirtdress. Fit is tts and cotton is light and breezy. Will work well as a cover up for vacation next month. Can also wear as a shirt/outer layer with a tank and shorts/denim or with a dress (pairs nicely with strappy midi dress in stripe). I love the colors; they’re so vibrant. Can wear belted or not. It’s really versatile.

Poppy silk blouse. Received size 8 which is the smaller of my two sizes. It fits well, but I want to compare with size 10 which is also en route. The silk is thin, so I’ll need a neutral bra. It will work well for upcoming vacation and spring/summer temps. Planning to pair with black silk shorts.

Everyday cashmere hoodie in forest green. I love the color, but the cashmere is itchy. Price was great, but I won’t wear it.

Birdie earrings. Ordered 2 pairs - one for my mom and a second pair as a back up. She loves them.

Vintage pj pants in red/white stripe. They actually look great paired with holiday stripe shirtdress. I won’t pair them together :). These are for sleeping. Fit is tts and cotton is nice. Love that they’re full length. May need to order matching pj top.

More orders to arrive. If I don’t order anything else, I’ll have everything by early next week.

    2. Tara, sounds like you had some wins! I noticed this morning that the poppy blouse is marked down to $52 before the 50% off - not sure what you paid but might be worth an adjustment. The holiday stripe dress is so you - can't wait to see you style it.

    3. Thanks so much! It was $40, so $16 after discount. Another price increase from J Crew :(. Not a big difference, but just hate J Crew does it.

    4. oh, wow, great deal. I paid $50 so going to have my SA adjust to reflect the current 50 off which is still a good deal! I took an 8 in this blouse, usually a 6 in most Crew tops.

    5. Agree that the price is still great! I received the 10 today and like the fit better. It’s a little longer and more relaxed. Tried it with super old black silk shorts from Express and really like the look.

  14. I picked up the double pleated midi in cerise which I had previously purchased and returned but giving it another go for the price. Doing one more check...glad I'm not the only one who caved.

The navy midi slip dress J1681 is in stock in several sizes - $48 before discount and is a great summer dress. I took an 8 which is the larger of my two dress sizes and I'm looking forward to taking this on vacation.

  16. I too bought another cashmere sweater from the older styles

Cashmere cardigan sweater with shawl collar
    item: H0747, size: X-SMALL for $44
And 2 rollneck sweater for me and my teen daughter for $21 each
Then I placed another order for Cap-sleeve dress in printed matelassé
item: J7992, size: 2, color: NAVY MULTI for $27

So I now have 3 orders arriving today... 2 items arriving Saturday from those orders and 3 orders pending.... ughh....god help us all!!! Lol

  17. I AM WEAK. I don’t even want to cop to the number of orders I’ve placed since this whole 60/70 fiasco was enacted. I am openly panic buying, seeing as I’ve spent too much time in the industry to ignore the writing on the wall. Get it while it’s hot!

  18. I received the second of my Flash Sale orders today. The Slim Perfect Shirt in Piece-dyed Linen is a truly a perfect fit in my usual size of 12. The Dried Papaya colour is really gorgeous IRL. I’m photosensitive, so long sleeves are the order of the day for me, and this will be a nice change from my looser fitting linen shirts.
Next up, my second pair of Point Sur Seaside “Linen” pants in T12. I put linen in quotes as they’re only 55% linen and the rest is Lyocell. As they’re out of season for me I haven’t worn them for any length of time yet, but I liked the Loden Green pair I got in the fall so much that I went for the Warm Caramel as well. I’m 5’9” and preferred the tall length, it seemed a bit more elegant (if elastic-waist/elastic-ankle pants can ever be elegant?). Reviews are mixed, but after trying both the T10 and T12, I found them TTS.
The last piece was the Buffalo check shirt-jacket. I think the reviews are pretty accurate on this one. It’s TTS, a bit scratchy, and much more shirt than jacket. This is one of those pieces that I love the idea of, but then struggle to find a time to wear it. It’s got a cottagey-vibe but I don’t own a cottage (sigh). Or, it might come in handy on the perfect fall cool-but-not cold day when I need a cute outfit….sigh. I probably should have resisted this one, but something kept drawing me back to it.

    1. I have that shirt in Papaya and in Black. Love love love it. Shape is flattering and it feels good to wear it.

I had a Buffalo check vest received as a gift that I only wore once or twice, so I donated it. Then wished I hadn't. So I get the ambivalence! It was really too large, so I probably never would have worn it even if I'd kept it. I did buy the Mr. a buffalo plaid flannel shirt this year, so I do get to enjoy seeing him wear it often.

Ummm, elegant comes from how you style those pants. I'm sure you can make them look great.

      Delete
    2. @p Thsnks for your thoughts! I do feel the pants are casually elegant, I just thought some people might laugh at that description. I tend towards fitted clothing but I’m trying to buy some looser (yet elegant!) styles going forward.
Best wishes on your ongoing recovery!

  23. Got two orders today and I did order the Nordic boots in black, not final sale, but for the price I know my other ones are on their last legs and these will be warmer than the bean boots.

Try on of the demylee boxy rollneck. I tried it with a shirt under and white jeans. The sweater is exactly as it's described. I have to try it with a few other things but I love the wool, just not sure it flares out too much in the back.

Tuxedo stripe wide leg pants. They fit really well in my usual 0. Not crazy about how they look with ond blazer. Need to try with a silk blouse and more fitted sweater. They're really nice cocktail party attire for me, but if they're not more flattering than my other dressy pants they're not a need.

Love a few random popbacks, a packable summer hat, sunglasses, the snakeskin belt is nice.

Stewart plaid puffer scarf. This is so funny but I love it. For the price it's a great novelty item. Going upstate this weekend and I'm sure it will come in handy.

Pic of the sweater on IG @wearthislikethis. I'll try the pants too at some point.

  25. I had a three pile box on my porch today … dark grey wool suiting Parke blazer to match my Edie trousers and suiting skirt, and the pink tweed Harlow heels as well as the dulci dot kitten heels. The shoes are both fantastic and I'm glad I ordered both. I don't have a lot of shorter heels so the Dulcis are a nice addition and so fun. The glitter heel Harlows are just fun - I'll definitely be trailing glitter wherever I go. I need to make sure these get some wear this spring. I found both pairs TTS in my usual 9.5 at J.Crew. A friend on IG said the glitter heels aren't the most comfortable so I'll plan accordingly. I haven't been in love with a lot of Crew's shoes in the last few seasons so I'm excited to have some fun new ones to work in to my wardrobe (even if they'll only be seen in the office until the snow melts!)

    1. Oh those glitter tweed heels are so fabulous, I had to stop myself though. But what fun. And I'm sure you'll get a ton of wear out of the dulcis.

    2. I eyed those as well! But I have a strict “no new heels” policy that I’ve been sticking to for about a year. The tweed/glitter combo was almost enough to make me cave in, but the thought of them just sitting in my closet with nowhere to wear them made me move on. Glad you snagged them at such a great price and looking forward to seeing you style them!

  26. Also, I have done a little eBay shopping - I have some search alerts set up and have been looking to replace my ivory featherweight shell that ended up with holes somehow (moths or washing mishap I'm not sure). At any rate, I found an ivory cashmere shell last week and purchased right away - it arrived today and is from holiday 2012 so even nicer than the one I replaced - so soft and in pristine condition. I love when you get a good win on eBay or Poshmark.

  27. I placed what I told myself is my final order. I ordered 3 pairs of pants at $20 each. Do I need them? Of course, not. I'm hardly in any danger of having to go naked. But I don't know where else I would get petite sized pants of comparable quality for less. Are they the best made pants in the world, no. But a $200 pair will not last 10 times as long.

    1. I also placed my final order (I tell myself). Bought a pair of $20 Marties in tall and another cashmere beanie for $19 knowing these are good quality items that are not easy to come by. I know another JCA didn't like the hats but I received my first one earlier this month and love it, lightweight and warm and a perfect fit for me. I'm so relieved the 60/70 is finally over this morning :D
