  1. Love how fast J Crew has been shipping things for me lately (over the last couple weeks, items were consistently shipped just a few hours after orders were placed).

Also love the Full-size cameron pants in 4 season stretch. I also own the cameron slim crop version but 2R is slightly short on me, 2T slightly long. 4P in the Full-size version is perfect!

  2. I've bought way too much this December and January. I'm fortunate in that it is not causing any financial or marital strain but I do want to be more thoughtful about my purposes. (I figure it's a bad sign when I've forgotten what items are in my outstanding orders.)

I decided last night that I am going to try a new strategy. In an effort to make myself more thoughtful I am going to allow myself 10 non-essential clothing/accessories/shoes items to purchase until the end of Q1. I am not setting a dollar budget as the prices have been so low that I don't think that will help me be more disciplined. It doesn't seem very ambitious but I don't want to set myself up for failure by being too extreme. Many of my recent orders had more than 10 items so not sure how this is going to go. (People can play all sorts of games with themselves, but I figure I can be honest enough with myself as to whether something is essential or not.)

Of course, after this morning, I'm already down 2 of my 10 "outs".

Parke blazer in English wool popped back in a couple of petite sizes. There was 1 of each of P0, P2 and P4. Sorry, ladies, I bought the P4. Or maybe you should thank me:-). I think P0 is showing as final sale but the other two sizes were not. Very odd. The jacket came in at $125 Cdn with the promo code. Original price of $299 Cdn. In the old days, I would have been very satisfied (even thrilled) with the deal.

And I could not resist a $20 ruched bandeau swimsuit.

    1. @Toronto I think setting some limits is a great approach. I agree that the low prices contribute to overbuying. I’ve definitely bought a lot less since they more or less cut off free shipping to Canada. I also have several banned categories for myself, regardless of price: no high heels, no pajamas, no swimwear, no t-shirts. And definitely no stocking up. As I have a large wardrobe it’s pretty rare for me to wear something out, so no duplicates allowed. Realistically I could wear my current wardrobe for the next 10 years (the horror, the horror) and I’m pretty sure I’d have more than enough of everything. Good luck with your new approach!

  3. I need to be more thoughtful about my purchases too. Slowly cleaning closets but not getting rid of as much stuff as I'd like. Well... Except for shoes. They're easy for me for some reason. I've splurged a little too much in January so I'm aiming for no shop February. See how I do with that and then maybe no shop March or a small item count March? Just take it one day at a time. Luckily, I'm not hurting financially... Just want to save more for future house buying/moving goal.

  4. Good morning, ladies - I think it can be easy to buy this time of year because it's so dreary out and it's so tempting to build an "aspirational" spring wardrobe. I'll be in sweaters for the foreseeable future and whenever I see online pictures of cropped pants and ballet flats it's easy to buy... as if buying will make spring come faster.

I find it helpful to take a look into my spring boxes to remind myself of the things that I'm looking forward to wearing this spring - the long-sleeve striped dresses, red pointy Boden flats, sleeveless cotton tops, lightweight sweaters, etc. Sometimes when I get started, I realize that I don't have enough physical or mental space to fit many new pieces in - I generally like how my wardrobe has been built up over time.

    1. Hi silver-lining. I think you're right. The weather definitely has an impact. You put it so well when you refer to "physical or mental space". I definitely don't have either. It's very odd. I love the pieces in my wardrobe. So I should be content and should not be constantly looking, and yet I do.

    2. Hi TM - I totally hear you! It's fun to look, I love to look at old and new images, see what IG friends are wearing, peruse the sales. Lately, I am realizing that seasons have gone by where I hadn't even pulled out the things I really love, because I was busy buying new (and returning, re-buying, etc.).

I had a co-worker who could not understand why somebody would have a lot of shoes, because "you only have one pair of feet". I LOVE shoes and have a ton, but that's always stuck with me when I'm mulling over buying something that I don't really love or need. There's only so much that I can physically wear during one season (I'm not hosting an awards show, so probably won't pull off multiple outfit changes in a day!). I don't think I'll ever be on a no-buy, but maybe more of a no-frenzy-buy. : )

    3. I have a huge wardrobe that takes up a lot of physical space, but I’ve only come to understand the “mental space” it takes up in the past few months. I think Stylebook helped me come to terms with that. Like silver_lining, sometimes I don’t even get around to wearing pieces o have since I’ve got so much and then go on to buy more. I’ve now reached the physical limits of what I can store, so am trying to both buy less and get rid of things. I’ve also purposely put some things away for a season so that I can just wear the remaining few pieces and either wear them out or get sick of them.

    4. Wardrobe taking up mental space is an interesting concept, glad you mentioned that. It's been on my mind but not put into words. There's just too much stuff for me to choose from and manage. I don't want to own this much (and I've gotten rid of quite a lot, but even what remains is weighing on me).

  5. Does anyone have a favorite purchase from the holiday season? Either a specific item or category? How about least favorite?

Overall: I'd say shoes and boots have been winners. Yes, sizing isn't always consistent but I'm especially pleased with my boots, considering the sale price, but even at three times the price I think they're nice. I didn't buy any heels, but I love the block heels and glad that style is still around because I find it much more wearable on my not-delicate feet than the more delicate stilettos and kitten heels.

Jeans: you might need to kiss a few frogs to find your prince in the denim category but wide the range of sizes, rises and styles there's a lot to choose from.

Coats: we may not see the high wool content of previous years but I've still found several that will certainly last many years and bring me joy.

Needs improvement: sweaters. Aside from the balloon sleeve turtleneck which I loved more than I thought and got at a very good price, I'm not thrilled with the blends and fits. J.Crew is not alone though, searching through department store websites I see more junky blends than anything else, at all pricepoints.

Pants: for me it's been difficult to find styles that really look good, but I'm picky. For the price I'm pleased with my red 365 crepe (fit better than the black, which seemed skimpy) and the red plaid wide leg, which will really be worn more casually and certainly didn't warrant the initial $128 price tag.

    2. My favorite purchase is the cherise cashmere sweater in black and red!!! Love it!!
Cap toe boots and Sherpa boots as well!!!
      Rest was mediocre!!!

I am looking forward to wearing the speckle tweed suit.... it’s a perfect fit!!!!

      Delete
    3. I have a few favorites - off the top of my head the charcoal wash high waist skinny jeans have been a weekend staple, the velvet scoop neck bodysuit, going out blazer in tweed and Glen plaid Daphne top coat.

Kate - glad the tweed worked out for you!

      Delete
    4. My favorite is also the captoe boots - I got the black ones and immediately started wearing them as a replacement for my Sam Edelman petty boots. I do need to wear trouser length socks or else the leather digs into my skin but otherwise they are so versatile and chic.
I've picked up 365 cropped Camerons in black, glen plaid, two shades of blue and the pale pink, and love them. They're so comfy. I thought they would be too short for me but at 5'1, they're just fine with booties and with heels/flats. I also got the Camerons in stretch cotton, and they're fabulous and versatile too. I'm reaching for my Camerons for everyday wear more often than my jeans.

Agree on the sweaters: Except for the 3 new Tippis I picked up this season, I've returned everything else. The blends are too soft and stretch out too easily, so that even if the fit was good to begin with (and it rarely is), after a day everything is stretched out. The everyday cashmere is awful - nearly see through or extremely scratchy.

    5. Love the black cashmere wrap I bought during BF/CM sales, though that's not really a surprise. Cashmere is my go-to coping mechanism for winter in Wisconsin. Surprise love, though, is the blue velvet kitten heel boots I picked up on mega sale. They're comfortable, luxe, and elevate a basic outfit.

    6. My favorite items of the year are both Collection jackets: The Lady Jacket in bright blue English Tweed and the Double Breasted Velvet in bright lichen. Serious style upgrade.

Second place to the metallic gold Academy loafers, my best fitting and favorite shoes ever. I have the smooth leather too, but the gold ones are way more comfortable. Wish I bought two pair!

Honorable mention to the Wide-wale Cord Jacket and tall wide leg trousers in Melted Caramel. Lovely fabric, color, fit and construction. My husband is a fan of the Ecru high-waisted flare jeans.

The worst were the Everyday cashmere hoodie that I would not wear for free and the Collection red plaid trenchcoat that was as cheap as a give-away at a baseball game on a rainy day.

For the Mr. we love the 2017 Ludlow Wool/Cashmere topcoat (not the 2018!) and the New Balance 247 Track jacket.

    7. My faves purchased since October (just went through order history):
black captoe boots, so comfy for work
      snakeskin mules
      clear lucite shield earrings
also really like the charcoal exposed button crop flares, but since I have a lot of jeans/pants they don't get a ton of action.

      Worst:
      velvet button down

    8. Also just learned I have only spent $344.07 since 10/01/18 on items I kept, for myself. That does not include what has yet to ship.

      Delete
    9. Unbelievably I managed to get all three CAPTOE boots on popback. (Red has yet to ship). I paid only slightly more for these three than the one bronze Day boot from Everlane that I sent back.
Those three PLUS my deep redwood and gold Sadie boots AND the tall heeled boots, it's still LESS than I would have spent on a pair of Frye boots. Sure the Frye boots MIGHT last forever but it still costs $50 every time they need to be resoled.

    10. The Lodge coat in lavender and matching pink Bluetooth earmuffs get me compliments all the time, and I paid around $60 for the ensemble with killer deals and rewards. The coat bunches and looks terrible when I sit down but I’m willing to forgive that flaw!

    11. The Golden Floral Tippi was by far my favorite purchase of this season and will remain so for years to come. If the Stubbs and Wooten loafers ever pop back in my size I know that they’ll be life-long keepers as well. Also love the Circle Eyelet tops I picked up just before BF, they’re really beautiful pieces and well worth the price (size down!).

    12. my favorites are all pretty boring: white 8'' toothpicks, 4'' stretch chino shorts (NOT the same quality as older versions but still like the red color), and the resume dress (caught a seersucker popback! also own in red and hot pink). otherwise i struck out on dresses. I have a short torso and the waists have been hitting me in terrible places, but petites don't really work either. not that that stopped me from trying at least five different dresses...(fortunately no FS) Oh I also really like the point sur pointelle crewneck and striped button shoulder turtleneck. I REALLY wanted the crepe drop shoulder turtleneck to work for me but it didn't :( -lep33shops

    13. @Alyssa, just standing around, looking great!

@Suz Has, My beloved cowboy boots cost more to resole than they did new, but I've done it twice. Agreed I am unlikely to buy $400+ boots, no matter how nice. I ordered the tall black high heel boots (not FS). I'd wear these with skirts and dresses, under flares and over skinnies (if they fit my muscular calves).

    14. Faves: Liberty puffer scarf, woop woop! Got the jacket too but haven't worn them together.... YET. Vintage straight jean in rip-and-repair. Crewcuts drawstring bag with reversible sequins and Joie de Vivre tee for little_lining because she embodies joie de vivre.

Duds: Pretty much everything else I tried. Waffled cotton joggers were enormous, popcorn cable sweater was too short/tight neck and felt itchy, Factory/Mercantile pieces felt thin and cheap for the prices. Didn't order a ton because I didn't feel like paying for returns. Did the math and figured about 25% of what I spent at JC last year was on return labels. Boo! Will order less in 2019 and use PayPal for reimbursement on the return shipping (thanks for the tip, TM!).

    15. My faves include the Roaming Tiger print silk blouse (think I bought in Nov); 10” toothpick jeans; the silk ruffle hem dress in tropical floral (bought with summer in mind) and oddly the long wrap skirt in b&w gingham (which was not on my radar last year but makes me think of spring and will be easy to wear). I did buy some cashmere and other silk items which I’m happy with.

    16. My faves are the Crewneck sweater in vintage Fair Isle (in gray) and the Donegal wool pullover mockneck sweater (in blue). I'd given up on J. Crew sweaters, but I really like these.

Unrelated, I found a pair of button front Toothpicks at TJMaxx for $12. I'm not sure if I like the exposed button front style on me, so this is a cheap way to try it out.

    18. Favorite from this season of shopping...good question.

I like everything I kept except for one thing. So it's hard to choose. I'll say the chateau parka, which I got in the light Heather green. It is bright and cheerful. It is not nearly as thick as it should be, and the fur trim is kind of unsightly if you look hard. But... my son has a light green Crew coat and we kinda match. I do get compliments on the coat. Since I'm prone to running out the door in a puffer vest in Wisconsin winters (not smart), this coat keeps me warmer than I would be despite not being nearly warm enough. The crewcuts coat seems much warmer, and has both fleece and Sherpa lining. Kinda wish I had that ;) Both are lovely colors.

Worst kept item, my much-loathed black velour sweatpants. Poor quality topped off with paying too much for them.

Honorable mention of best items would be shoes and boots as well. Popbacks and good deals, and good styles. Also the jungle cat print items- fabulous, though not wearing in this weather.

    19. My faves:
Leopard tee (black and white) K5404 - great pattern, easy to wear under blazers/sweaters.
Relaxed chambray boy shirt - again super easy to layer with. A classic at a great deal.
Point sur fuzzy cardigan jacket - a new way to wear fuzzy without it being a teddy coat. So warm too.
Factory textured turtleneck sweater - at 100% cotton, it's a rare breed at J Crew nowadays. I love it for casual carpool driving days.
And too many Crewcuts deals to count (including the faux fur leopard scarf for $3).

Anybody tried the floral applique tee? There are no reviews, but it looked like a cool white tee to add to my collection.

    20. i second the jungle cat print. i’ve been fighting temptation to order the flats and the kitten heels because i love that print so much. can’t wait til it’s warm enough to wear the pants.

  6. Got another package yesterday!
    Mockneck pullover sweater in cashmere
item: K4562, size: X-SMALL, color: HTHR DUSK, pretty awful. I don’t like 2 different cashmere feels. Body was thick and plush... sleeves were thin. It was also huge. On top of that the neck had brown/yellow make up on it. I did a chat and they refund me last night. It’s going back ASAP!

Velour-lined hoodie sweatshirt, K3153, size: MEDIUM, color: LIGHT HTHR GREY, my 16 yes old loved it.... was asking if there is a black one..lol
Ribbed cable-knit scarf in everyday cashmere
item: K2545, little thin... it was only $30.... going back as well......but I did
Buy a cahmere wrap before in store for $45... pink and dark green. They are plush and huge!!!
I have 4 more orders coming, one shipped and 3 pending ( mostly pajamas) keep you all posted. Good thing is I am returning a lot!!! No second thoughts about it at all!!!!Yay!!!!

  7. I was up during the magic hour last night and caught some popbacks at great prices.
Campbell blazer in Liberty poppy floral - I really liked this pattern when it came out but didn't need another button down. I didn't think twice about this blazer but it was $29.xx and the reviews are excellent. I'm a 2/4 in blazers and this was a popback in 6, but I think I will be wearing this as a light spring jacket so will be layering. Excited for this and hoping it doesn't get cancelled.
Cotton cable sweater in marled stripe (E9314) - I think this is a popback from 2016. It's cotton and $15! I'm always excited for 100% cotton sweaters.
Liberty Jackie - I didn't like this when it came out because it ran so small, but I grabbed a popback in a medium and it was $14! I can't believe the discount on Liberty items. I feel stupid for paying so much in the past.

  10. So the gray Maddie’s I ordered from Poshmark are Paleys.
The seller said I should have asked if she was sure they were Maddie’s, as she is not very familiar with J. Crew.
I let her know I did a search for “J. Crew Maddie”...and took that as enough verification.
    We shall see!

    1. This is a pet peeve of mine! I would definitely return. If the seller isn't sure of the garment style name, she shouldn't claim to have a specific item. I see this a lot with J.Crew blazer listings. Some go so far as to include stock photos and a cut & paste description of one item, then IRL photos of a totally different style that they're offering for sale. I once saw someone put stock photos of a wool blazer and IRL photos of a cotton utility jacket.

      Delete
    2. Jeanne that is exactly what happened! She used stock photos. Perhaps I didn’t examine the rest examine closely enough, but regardless I was misled.
Trust me, there is no way I’m keeping pants that don’t fit me for $26.49. I’m curious to see how long this takes now.

    3. I've only bought a few things from Posh but before I did I asked specific questions re style number, I hope they either work for you or you can return. If any problems I'd let Poshmark know. I think there are prob some people who buy stuff secondhand to resell and have no idea what's what.

    4. @Cheri, I recently bought again on Posh as I was hoping to replace an old JCrew silk maxi that I loved. I received the item after the seller said it was NWOT and lo and behold it had a stain on the front. I just put in a tab with Poshmark and it resolved within a day or two. I shipped it back and it was refunded. Hope yours goes as smoothly!

      Delete
    5. @Suz, lesson learned!
@Zach, gosh I feel even worse that you weren’t able to replace the maxi skirt. Really the nerve of some people. Big difference between NWT and stained! One or two days is great in my book, thanks!

    6. also had a poshmark issue with a stain - the seller was being stubborn about it but poshmark provided me a label and refunded me once it was returned. It took a little longer than I wanted to hear back from posh, but it all got resolved.

    7. @Cheri, not good of the seller to suggest you should ask if the item you bought was what the seller said it was. Sheesh. I mean, if someone asked me if what I had listed was what I had listed, I would be confused or at least surprised. Sorry that happened.

  11. I did visit the store today for some returns (I like to get them back ASAP when I know I'm not keeping!) and tried on the officer patch pocket wide leg pants. I tried the 00 as there wasn't a 0 around. They were def fitted in the hips but the waist fit nicely (I did struggle to get them on a bit but I think they'd loosen up since there wasn't much stretch, still I'd try my usual size to compare). They're thick, sturdy and seem to be well made. I don't love tan/khaki pants on myself and don't have much of a need for them, but I could seewearing them with leopard shoes and a black fitted turtleneck or white button down with a pretty bandana. They definitely have an officer/Safari vibe (could really go either way). I think they're really chic. Hopefully they do this style in other colors and maybe a lighter fabric. Not that I need the temptation. Posted pic on IG @wearthislikethis
I also tried the rigid flare jeans at Madewell. These are currently on sale for $79.99 and 40% off. Only the 25tall was in store and they were a touch loose, especially as they're all cotton and will loosen up. I wouldn't allow myself to buy another pair of jeans right now, especially considering what I've got coming in the mail and the fact that I'm not sure this style is for me, but they seem like the type of jeans that will only get better with wear. I took a pic and will keep looking at it to see if I think they're worth pushing my comfort zone.

  15. received the tweed lady coat with braided trim today, took the larger of my JC blazer size and it’s perfect. i was deciding between the lady coat or the jacket, and went with the longer length because shorter boxy cuts tend to age me. paid $50.xx and absolutely worth every penny. it is not a warm coat - more like a thick cardigan sweater or a knit blazer, but it looks great with Camerons and a blouse or a a dress under. does not look like you’re wearing a jacket indoors. it’s a keeper!

    2. also want to add that i got the princess mini in gold. i stalked it for awhile in that color, then ordered one size up according to reviews. the 4 arrived, and boy it just fit. i wanted to wear it with sweaters tucked in, so i had to stalk a 6 - two sizes up from my usual JC bottom size! it sits so high on the waist, i almost want to stalk a 6T just to make up for the length that is going to the waist rather than the hem. (and i’m only 5’1!). it is a great color and style though - I wanted a similar wool mini a few years ago but it had a giant gold back zip like a golden arrow pointing at my tush. i couldn’t bear the back view.

    3. I just ordered the princess skirt in navy. I would loooove the gold! Ordered one size up, which I hope was enough. Practical piece I would use a lot instead of my thinner skirts. I mean, it's -22 with the wind chill tonight, so I had to get it :)

    4. I have the skirt coming today... also sized up to 4T from my usual 2... will see

    5. What do you guys do for warm tights? I like the jcrew ones.... but for winter I own one pair of wool tights by Falke, they are very pricy.... bought my pair in Bloomingdale last year....range btwn 50-75.... wondering if you guys have other ideas that might be cheaper....

    6. Every year I buy a bunch of Uniqlo extra warm tights in different colors. I only wear them. Sometimes, if it's really cold out and I'm wearing a dress, I'll layer the extra warm tights under a pair of regular tights. By the end of the season, I toss the ones that are getting/are stretched. They're about $9.90 a pair so I don't feel bad tossing when they're all worn out. I've gotten Wolfords and have been furious when they stretch/tear after 2-3 wears, and I've learned that when it comes to tights... I'd rather be warm than be designer.

    7. @Kate, I like Smartwool tights. They are washable, though I often handwash to make them last. They're pretty warm!

  16. Re the lady cost. I had to stop myself from getting that. I was going to order the four. How did you get such a great price? I have a 4 in the black so couldn’t justify the metallic tweed!

    1. Just looked at my receipt. It was $56 not $50. (Still good!)

    2. Yes, that's right, I was tempted but I have a short collection metallic tweed jacket (tulip bottom, really different, it's at least ten years old) and the black one so I didn't get it. I hope you love it!!! $56 is a great price.

    3. Ok I tried it on again so I don't have FOMO and it's just NOT the bestfitting style on me. I like it with higher necked/bow blouses and sweaters. I'm best off sticking with just one!

    4. strong willpower you have, my friend.

    5. EEPS, no one would ever say that! Since I got the leopard topcoat and the Cabernet plaid, trust me, not much willpower.

    6. Ha!! I do love the Cabernet plaid in you though - I think it’s a good choice to stick with that.

    7. ON you. Good lord autocorrect.

    8. Thank you, I love it. Twice the price of the ladycoat but Different. As you said the ladycoat is great to wear instead of the ladyjacket, its heavy but it kind of works inside too.

  17. I paid $42.00 for the same coat in addition to a pile of other things which were embarrassingly inexpensive. The laundry list is too long. I used my 25% off coupon for everything including new items which came down to 50% off.
