This is the weekly "sale watch" post, to help each other find sale
items at our
various local J.Crew stores. ;)
If
you are stopped
by a J.Crew store this past weekend
to see what's available (if
anything!) in the SALE, or to see some NEW ARRIVALS
{sigh!} in person, maybe you
might be willing to
share that with us in this post. In
particular, if you could share
with us a few of the noteworthy items
that are available, at what
prices, and potential sizes the
store is carrying (as well as the
store location)- that would be
fantastic!
Also, please
let us know if your local store
was/ is carrying an additional
percent off sale. Thanks in
advance!!! :)
I always like to check out other Jcrew stores when I am out of town so I dropped in one this weekend. I was happy to see the 30% off did apply to sale items. Sale sections were pretty full but nothing much caught my eye. I tried on the lone navy sweater blazer with stripe lining on the sale rack in a medium but it was too big. I didn’t even go to the fitting room and just tried over my clothes on the floor since it was all I found to try. I did like the look of the Liberty sleeveless tank in symphony floral H4646 but I wasn’t able to try because only 00 in stock. The new spring jewelry is pretty disappointing and there was nothing in sale. I may check another store this week because I have rewards to spend. No shop February may continue through March at this rate.
ReplyDeleteCurious about what is in Jenna Lyons’s closet? The Realreal is hosting a shop-her-closet event with Jenna. I see many a sequined pencil skirts and lots of heels. A few vintage J.Crew pieces are still available.
ReplyDeleteThat's very cool in a voyeuristic way.
DeleteWas just coming to report this!
DeleteShe is getting some pretty good prices on some of the Jcrew pieces.
DeleteShoppingCelle, I was having JCrew flashbacks - ie what it was like to look at the sales section in the old days - the wool and silk coat in XS, that’s still too expensive for me at 300+, the leopard coat that sold out before I got to it! Same FOMO! 😆
DeleteDef. not inexpensive.
DeleteHa! I agree Suz! Kind of awesome to see snippets of Jenna’s personal style in the open.
DeleteYeah, the prices are definitely set high by TheRealreal considering I have seen that chest hair chrysanthemum piece in a size 4 for around 70USD. But there are also a few J.Crew pieces that I have never seen before. Does anyone remember seeing either in person or online the metallic tweed sweatshirt and the pleated sequined skirt?
I remember the metallic tweed sweatshirt.
DeleteVery cool! thanks for sharing.
DeleteProvenance will always keep prices up.
DeleteI love the Bengal perfect shirt that she wore for the Vogue interview. She's an amazing designer. If you're curious about her interview just click the link Click Me to See Jenna
DeleteI was going to post this in items for sale but it's really more of a conversation.
ReplyDelete(Though I have a lot in my posh closet @Suzhas.
Sellers have to realize it's easy to find sold prices on Poshmark and even EBay. I know I have had to reduce prices often, but if I really choose to pass an item along, I'm happy to do so instead of have something I don't wear even if it's new and I can't recoup my cost.
Last month for noshopfebruary I decided to think about older items I wanted but never bought. One such item is the curator pant. I had seen a few sold for the $25-30 range. Found a listing for them for $90, worn, not new. Now, these pants are 8 years old if research serves. (The 2010 version with the rear zip.) I made an offer in that range and seller rejected. Another seller just listed them and I decided to make the same offer. We basically split the difference between original offer and listing price and I purchased for a fair price for used pants.
I totally understand listing high and have done it plenty of times, so I'm not criticizing, just making an observation. If everyone else is selling a pair of pants for $25-30 I don't think a buyer is going to buy them for $90.
Fellow posh/IG or eBay sellers/buyers how do you price your items? I'd love to know how others do it.
Suz, I do think some of those sellers that set ridiculously high prices for J.Crew items target the buyer who either doesn’t do her research before hitting the buy button or is not a regular J.Crew shopper who knows the bottom line price for those items.
DeleteDepending on the condition of my item, I set my price by going just a few dollars higher or lower in comparison to other listings. Granted, I have only sold three items (none by J.Crew) on eBay. I have considered selling a few pairs of NIB designer shoes on eBay but have not found the time to list them.
I often wonder if sellers ever get those crazy prices for items but I also wonder if there are people out there who just don't know enough and will pay it. When there's other comparable items up for sale for a fraction of the price, that seems odd to me.
DeleteMy usual strategy is to check to see what items have sold for on eBay and go from there. I've been selling for a few years now so often I have an idea of what I'd like to get for an item and based on any previously sold items I will price my item accordingly. If I'm not in a rush to clear out, I'll start a little high and then if the item sits for a few weeks, I'll move the price down. If I'm in a mood to move stuff out, I'll go on the lower end and it usually works. Since Posh takes 20% and people love to haggle on there, I price a little higher, knowing that I'll be knocking the price down at some point.
Generally speaking I've had luck with this. Sometimes things that I don't expect to sell quickly sell and other times they sit for a while. And I've learned that no matter how much I loved something, sometimes others aren't willing to pay what I'd be willing to pay for an item.
I am embarrassed to say I do not know the first thing about Poshmark, but as for Ebay I always always always check completed listings before both selling and buying.
DeleteI have never purchased on ebay or poshmark. In Canada I believe we can't access poshmark. cost of shipping and exchange rate makes it just ridiculous... for USA ebay.
DeleteI always just consider a few items "As the ones that got away"
I look around eBay and Poshmark to see where others may have listed things, but I do mentally calculate my absolute minimum I'm willing to recoup for the item and try to stick to my guns there.
DeleteEvery once in a while I budge if it's something I definitely don't wear anymore, since some $$ would do more good than storing the item indefinitely would.
It seems that some resellers count on J Crew items fetching a higher price among the brand’s fans, particularly rare pre-2011 items when quality was amazing.
DeleteI usually price things about half the retail price (most of my items are new with tags or worn once, if that). If it is a Collection item, I tend to go higher, but it tends to sit. I’d rather keep a brand new cashmere sweater even if it’s too big on me vs selling it for $30.
Deletemore puppies this morning.
ReplyDeleteNatick MA location is closing 3/25, just got an email. Scary considering the Natick location is the #2 in the area, second only to Copley in Boston. Woof.
ReplyDeleteAny idea what other locations are closing? I naively thought Natick was safe :( Now my closest store is over an hour away. Sigh.
DeleteThat's the only one so far. My email is connected to 4 other regional stores though, so who knows what's next!
DeleteWow! I can't believe Natick is closing. That store was a good one. Wonder if Chestnut Hill, Braintree, and Derby Street will stay open?
Deletehttps://www.aspentimes.com/news/local/j-crew-to-close-aspen-store-at-end-of-april/
DeleteAnother store closure article.
One of the managers from Copley just went to Chestnut Hill. I don’t think she’d make the move if they were closing (although no one is ever in there and the customer service is horrible!).
DeleteThe Derby Street Hingham store is great!
DeleteCannot believe this news...Natick is a high end mall and the j crew was great..no high end mall is without a j crew.
DeleteFirst time posting though I’ve been reading for a very long time. I’ve been a J.Crew devotee since around 2005 - I’ve seen the highs and lows! I have a background in retail so it’s been fascinating following from a business perspective too. Needless to say, it’s been hard to watch their trajectory lately. I’m so discouraged today because I just got the email telling me my closest store (Natick, MA) is closing in a matter of days, really. A sales associate told me around the holidays that they were doing work to the windows, which she said the employees took as a reassuring sign that their store would be spared. So sad. I think I just had to vent to people who understand and have watched this downward spiral :) anybody know what other stores in MA are closing?
ReplyDeleteI’ve asked multiple times in the Burlington MA store if any MA stores are closing and they just scoff at the suggestion. I feel like we may know about the health of the company than some of the employees. I don’tknow how they can leave Lynnfield and the N. shore stores open...they are only a few miles apart.
DeleteI wondered the same thing! The Lynnfield store is relatively new and on the smaller side not to mention your point, a bigger, more established store is a stones throw away. Natick served all the shoppers west of 495, who would otherwise have to go to Providence or Boston, both an hour away at least. Is the Cape store still open?
DeleteNatick is the wrong store to close. It is big with great selection. Close Dedham or Burlington, bot tiny stores.
DeleteI generally just donate or give away items as selling is such a huge PIA, but I have sold a few things on ebay. Even though they were higher end items in like-new condition, I priced them low as I wanted to get rid of them quickly and I didn’t expect to recoup the price I paid. I guess that explains the nice e-mails I received from buyers after they received their packages. I was just happy that my discards found good forever homes, lol.
ReplyDeleteAs far as buying, it seems like the lowest prices tend to be people who have no idea what they have. I bought a like new wool herringbone Bella jacket described as “wool jacket” and a Liberty of London shirt described as “flowered shirt” on ebay for almost nothing.

DeleteGot the email today that my local store (Burlingame, CA) is closing 3/26. I’m fortunate to have two alternate stores each only about 30 minutes away; but I often order items in multiple sizes and this will make it much more inconvenient make returns. I feel like the writing is on the wall. Meanwhile I will continue quietly amassing my arsenal of pencil skirts to ensure adequate supply to carry me thru my remaining “working” years where I require a semi-professional wardrobe :)
ReplyDeleteJust curious. Did the email come from someone you know there (manager or Vps) or come from Jcrew corporate?
DeleteIt was a corporate email with pictures of a hot air balloon, a bicycle, and a skateboard. The store closing was acknowledged at the top of the email and said “See you soon at your nearest J.Crew” and then listed what will now be my closest store.
DeleteIt also provided a code for $25 off in store only. So that’s nice I guess.
Bummer. It's my closest store as well. I always liked it better than the Palo Alto or SF stores. Sigh. And I didn't even get a $25 code, maybe I don't buy enough?
