This is the weekly "J.Crew Reviews {straight from the JCAs}" post, to help each other share our reviews.So if you have recently purchased, or stopped by a J.Crew store to try on an item (or two) from J.Crew, maybe you might be willing to share that information with us in this post.

ReplyDeleteI went back to the store yesterday in an attempt to try on some other things and get a good review post together. My store had gotten some new items and my favorite SA was working so I had a much better try on session. To my surprise, one of my favorite items was the Drake giraffe skirt (the shirt didn't work at all on me - not a fan of the shape and it was short). You can see photos/short reviews of the giraffe skirt, pop stripe dress, midi skirt in fringe dot, Always chambray shirt, embellished jackie in peri, tie waist ornate floral skirt, chambray dress, foulard pants and stripe jackie cardigan. Also posted a few pics from the failed try on session - the lightweight bow sweater and the bell sleeve blouse (both too short on me).

DeleteAnne, I know you didn't like the giraffe top, but it would be great to see some IRL photos if you have any. Very curious about the top, but when I see it described as short, it's not as promising.

@shopgrrrl, I don't have a site where I share fashion or photos, but I just received and tried on this top tonight. I like it a lot. I'm 5' 10.5", and have a fairly average length torso. I can see why Anne felt it was a bit short, but the length is definitely not a deal breaker for me. The hem has a shirttail shape, and if you don't wear medium or high rise bottoms, you could show some skin on the sides. I wear lookout jeans, and the shirt comes about an inch below them on the sides, and hits just above the rear pockets. HTH!
DeleteThanks, Wendy, after looking at Anne's photo I suspected it might be the shirttail hem causing the length issue as it looks okay from the front. Do you mind if I ask which size you tried on? I don't own any JCrew shirts, though I've tried a few on in 12.
DeleteWendy, thanks for your input! I would agree that it is the shirttail hem that was giving me grief. I personally prefer a longer top but I think others may be completely fine with it.
DeleteShoprrrl, I measure and fit a 10, but have consistently ordered 12's in JC tops for a year or so now (due to small cutting through shoulders, and my bustiness). The 12 in this top is plenty roomy, but I don't think I'd size down. HTH!
DeleteAnne, I'd prefer another inch or two on this one, also. I feel like Goldilocks with the lengths of tops these days-almost always too long or too short ;) And when they are too long on me, I wonder for whom they actually work.

DeleteI think it would be more versatile if it were a midi length. I can't think of one place I could wear a maxi length tulle skirt.
DeleteIt's sort of midi-length--not quite full length. The navy is half sold out and the mint sold out right away so I guess people are into them (at least not the pink).
DeleteI tried the mint thinking it might hit me at mid calf but at 5'5" it was closer to full length than midi and I did not find it very flattering.

DeleteI think the skirt could be really cute worn out for brunch, baby or bridal showers, and also for Easter Sunday. I personally would opt for wearing it more casually with flat sandals or flip flops, though. Also having it hemmed to the length shown on the model would make it more wearable, imo. I think that for those of us living in more rural areas it isn't as feasible, but it could be doable for those living in more metropolitan areas.

DeleteMy wedding dress had a poofy tulle skirt, and I had the dress hemmed afterward so I could wear it again. I've worn it... once sitting my wedding (to another wedding... that took place on my wedding anniversary). Not sure what else I'd wear it to, but maybe a spring or early summer outdoor party? The maxi skirts I bought from the winter roll outs will get more wear since they are a lot more tame than the tulle, although arguably still pretty dramatic.

DeleteI think the tulle skirts are beautiful in a never-outgrow-a-love-of-playing-dress-up, princessy way. I can't even think of an occasion when I'd wear one, but I do love seeing them in the style guide.

DeleteOne of the SAs at my store was trying on a return of the pink skirt when I was there yesterday... She said she's usually a 0 and the tulle skirt was a 6 and barely fit her. She joked that she was going to get it for her beach vacation.

ReplyDelete@Katherine, This topic came up not too long ago and I tried to do a quick search since it was a helpful thread, but I'm not finding it unfortunately. IIRC, the gist was that many JCAs seem to have more success with eBay, although plenty use and like Poshmark. I don't know if perhaps there is a longer wait period for getting paid as a seller on Poshmark because I notice that as a buyer, I often have to hit 'Accept' or some such when I receive my order, before a buyer is able to get paid. I don't know what, if any, the differences are in terms of fees. One thing that was mentioned for Poshmark -- the way the community is set up is rather different than eBay and it seems to inquire more involvement, for whatever reason, from the seller in order to receive exposure. (Hopefully others can clarify better than I can since I'm not really sure how it works.)
DeletePersonally, I've only ever tried selling with eBay and have a moderate amount of success, but I, too, have read on eBay forums that there's been a slowdown for whatever reason. I've noticed the same myself.
Hi - I sell & buy via Poshmark. I can clear up a few of TM93's q's. If a buyer doesn't hit the accept button, there is a three-day waiting period for funds to be released into your account. If they do hit the accept button prior to that, the funds are yours immediately. The fees are 20% of anything over $10 which may seem steep but IMO the ease of selling is way better than eBay so I am fine with that. I also like that there is an "offer" button as well as a bundle feature. Shipping for anything under 10 lbs is a flat rate of $6.49 - they send you the mailing label via email & you can use any old box you have sitting around or a priority mail box or envelope from the PO.
DeleteI have sold on both sites & I prefer Poshmark for both buying & selling. There's no bidding on Poshmark but as I said above, you can offer & negotiate with people! I think some people prefer to list pricier items on eBay & more common items on Poshmark, which makes sense due to Posh's 20% fee - the steeper the list price, the more they take.

DeleteI compared selling on Poshmark to a few other sites and even though they take a chunk, they make it so easy I've managed to sell over $2500 worth of clothing in the past year and a few months.
At first I was waiting until I had $100 balance but now I just put even smaller amounts into my bank account. I haven't had much of an issue with payment delays at all.
I save my J.crew mailers and use the free ones from USPS too. I buy a few rolls of packing tape at a time.
I go through closets regularly. If I see something I even consider listing I try to do it right away. I think it works better when you're a more active participant, sharing your closet and items from others, but I don't know for sure.
I take mine to a local consignment store. I could make more money selling online, but for me it isn't worth the hassle.
DeleteI prefer Poshmark. It's so much easier to list items and I have had good success. You do get the low bidders but you can ignore them or just tell a flat no way. I had a snarky Ebay seller a few years ago and it really turned me off. She made some comments about me that were simply flat out lies. I have not been back since. Won't ever again either.

DeleteYeah, I don't see any negatives either. I just shop like I did before. Although, when they started this insider program they changed their return policy for online orders to 30 days (it was 60 before). That I don't like!
DeleteI adore the insider program. I'm in the tier with free overnight shipping and it's amazing. My only complaint is I never got my birthday gift, although my wonderful SA at my local store said she'd honor it on my next purchase there.

ReplyDeleteinland turtleneck sweater-- this has a rolled neck and it's seriously the softest, lightest (meanining airest) sweater. I sized up to a small because I was concerned about the length but I probably could have gotten away with the XS. it's really, really stretchy, and more fitted than most Madewell sweaters I've tried but still kind of boxy for me. I like it because it's so soft but the length may cause some issues depending on what pants I wear. It's OK, not great, but the neckline and softness is a plus. Reviews say it pills and it seems like it will easily get stretched out. I was hoping this would work with the paperbag waist pants. I love monochromatic dressing and the colors blend nicely.
cableknit shirttail turtleneck sweater: donegal oatmeal. This is a little scratchy but feels more like a traditional cableknit and I like the speckles in the wool. Can be worn as a mockneck or cuffed down. I can totally see this with slouchy jeans over a long sleeve shirt (maybe black and white stripe). I like this one. I also sized up to a small and I think in this one it was the right move. The shirt tail is a little different, classic with a twist. It's still winter--if you need a sweater like this I recommend!
Not final sale I bought the lace up pullovers in gray. They look similar to the J.crew collection sweaters and are merino. Trying an XS and S since they all tend to be so boxy on me. Still have to try these on.

I tried the madewell inland turtleneck when it first came out. Fit was great and super soft and the pink color was perfect for me. Then I noticed a hole in the chest where the tag must have rubbed up against the material. :/

I noticed there's a lump of black yarn on the arm and if I take it out I know it will make a big hole. the black yarn is definitely not supposed to be there (it's not a speckled type of yarn) and it's half poking through. I'm concerned that it's sticking out enough that it will pull. Even though it's final sale I think it's a Reasonable expectation that the clothing be free of defects.
DeleteSuz Has, for sure! I bought a final sale top with defects recently, so I emailed customer service and they immediately pre-returned the item. That stinks though, especially if you really liked the sweater.
DeleteI managed to get the black yarn out without destroying the sweater. I love the neckline so I'm going to keep it. Hopefully it doesn't develop holes that quickly. :(

DeleteI wore my giraffe skirt tonight with a factory polka dot t shirt and it was a lovely combination. Great skirt! I also received the sweater skirt but it unfortunately had a big mark on it. I'm taking it to the dry cleaners who will hopefully be able to get rid of the mark (and j crew promised to reimburse me). Much rather exchange but it's practically sold out. It's a great skirt! Both fringe dot midis are on their way. Now I need to focus on styling my newskiers. Picked up the Kate spade happy sweater tonight (had a great coupon) and I think it will look great with the sweater skirt and the blue fringe dot midi. Working on some other ideas for my new skirts too but I've done enough damage for a while and need to shop my closet.
ReplyDeleteJust read the Tartan, Tulle, Stripes page of the JC NYFW blog, and noticed an interesting detail about halfway down the page (right below the photo of the tasseled shoes). It shows what I think is the inside pocket of that camo jacket, in an octopus-embroidered oxford cloth. Not sure exactly what I'm looking at there, but love the octopus! Finally, something to love from NYFW!
ReplyDeleteReceived the Cotton Canvas High-Waisted Pant yesterday in light blue. I got my typical pant size and they fit pretty well. I liked the sturdy weight of the fabric. They different than anything else I own. The pants have a very casual feel so I probably won't wear them to work but I think they will be great for spring/summer days about town.
ReplyDeleteContinuing with my Madewell reviews, the lace up sweaters were way too boxy for me, so I returned them today and wanted to check out some Madewell boots in store. I ended up buying the Lucien boot in leather, with the wood block heel. So far I only tried them on with my rolled up jeans (not so great), the pleated faux leather mini (maybe with tights?) and the Ryder leather pants (perfect). Not sure I have much of a need for them but I'll try them on with other things. I find the size and fit true to size and the leather seems like nice quality,
