"Looking to VENT" with J.Crew

This is the weekly "Looking to VENT with J.Crew" post, a place to share our not-so-stellar experiences with J.Crew.

If you have recently experienced a frustrating situation with J.Crew, maybe you might be willing to share that information with us in this post.

Please feel free to share your story on almost any topic— including poor experiences with purchases & orders, promotions/ offers, in-store visits, transactions with store associates, etc.

  3. My vent is flimsy coat buttons. I spent over an hour last night re-sewing buttons on my double cloth funnel coat. The buttons get so floppy sometimes and they have so much thread that connects the front button to the back anchor button but then the actual thread connecting the large button to the coat is nonexistent. Not sure if that makes sense but I had to remove a few buttons, get rid of all the thread and resew them to get them on properly. BUT the double-cloth funnel coat is one of my favorite coats so I'm willing to spend the time :)

  4. Does anyone know where I can see a photo of the lining on the Collection Down Parka (item F6993, pink furry trim)? They play up the lining in the description, but don't show a photo of it. I'd really like to see the lining before I drop $495 the thing. (Vent: The parka is excluded from the promo.)

    1. Shellye - you can see a bit of the lining in the hood of the parka on the IRL pic that Jcrewmycrew shared on her Instagram here. Not sure if it's the same inside the body, but the odds are good that it is.

    2. Actually, I just read the comment she left on the IG pic to another JCA, and she said that the lining IS the same on the hood as it is in the body. HTH!

  5. I had been eyeing the Lightweight Wool Fair Isle Striped Sweater (item F8276). It's paired in the catalog with the gold/navy floral jacquard skirt and I liked the pattern mixing. The sweater was viewable with a "preorder" search on the website earlier this week, but once the new rollout launched it has vanished! A search of the item number results in a "sorry we didn't find any results" message.

I wish J Crew would get their inventory issues together. I am also perplexed at the number of items which are fairly new and would be great for holiday parties but are on backorder. I understand when popular things sell out; but "backorder" suggests to me they didn't plan their inventory correctly. I'd love to order the black leather backed sequin petal earrings (available in February) and the Houndstooth Jacquard Envelope Clutch (December 6th) but given the limited window for when I would wear these, I really can't do a mid-December (or later) ship date.

  7. As everyone is commenting stuff is selling out quickly or on backorder, can someone tell me if item# F9515 Thomas Mason white shirt perfect velvet bows was on promo?

    1. Unfortunately, no promotional discounts applied to that item. I really wanted that one too.

  8. I really dislike the repeated phonetic spelling of basic English that they keep trotting out with each new catalog. It's weird to advertise how to pronounce things that literally no one had a question about how to pronounce, like 'freak out' or 'shiny ponies'. I found it mildly annoying at first, but now it's like seriously, why do you keep doing this?

    1. Agree, striped socks.
The habit seems to be a fad these days in the marketing business. I've seen two presentations in the last couple months that start with a powerpoint slide of a phonetic pronunciation and dictionary definition of some basic word and go rapidly downhill from there. I told someone recently, "If you have to start your presentation that way, it means you have nothing interesting to say so start over."

  9. Hi JCAs,

I've been reading this wonderful blog for years but rarely comment. I'm from the US and now live in the UK. Although I was aware of the blatant overcharging of UK customers, this morning I got frustrated enough to write to JC about it ...

    -----------------

I'm a long-time J.Crew customer originally from the US and now living in the UK. Although I was excited when J.Crew open its first UK store, I soon became upset when I realized that items cost much more in the UK due to J.Crew simply removing the $ on each item and slapping on a £. An item costing $98 in the US costs the UK customer £98, or $122.40.

I know there are extra costs to doing business in the UK, but as competitors like Banana Republic adjust their prices more fairly for UK shoppers, then J.Crew should do the same. For example, BR's Embellished Crew Sweater is $148 / £130.

Adding insult to injury are the many promotions US shoppers receive that we in the UK do not. This is what has prompted me to write. Today I was happy to see a 20% promo for the UK, until I checked the US website and saw the 40% promo there! My enthusiasm turned to frustration as I was yet again reminded that J.Crew seems to consider its UK shoppers as less deserving of fair prices and equal promotions. Mickey Drexler has even tried to justify the attitude with this insulting thought bubble:

'Opening international stores enormously helps your domestic business,' he explained. 'Because then customers will buy even more when they come to America, because it’s cheaper.' (http://www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-2515092/J-Crew-CEO-Mickey-Drexlers-bizarre-defense-UK-price.html#ixzz4QvU9b9bd)

News flash, Mickey: although I may buy some J.Crew items while visiting the US, I LIVE in the UK and therefore I do the vast majority of my shopping here. Also, J.Crew is not a high-end brand ... your average customer is not a jet-setter who flies to the US every month for a shopping trip.

No wonder sales have tanked ...

  10. The website design on my iPad has changed. I like the new design, but I dearly miss the quicklook views and also being able to zoom into the pictures. Really bummed out about that.

    1. Same! I hate it. You can choose "web version" but it only stays that way for the main page; when you go to categories or sale or whatever it switches back to the new design.
