J.Crew Reviews {straight from the JCAs!}

This is the weekly "J.Crew Reviews {straight from the JCAs}" post, to help each other share our reviews.

So if you have recently purchased, or stopped by a J.Crew store to try on an item (or two) from J.Crew, maybe you might be willing to share that information with us in this post.

Also, this request is not just limited to clothes. Please feel free to discuss bags, shoes, jewelry, accessories, etc.

In particular, if you could mention a few of the noteworthy details like fit, size, fabric, and the like— that would be fantastic! Thanks in advance! :)

  4. Got the wide leg pants in wool, ordered last week. Unfortunately, I messed up and somehow ordered two of the same size, my smaller size and they are a bit tighter than I would like (in the crotch, eek, which may be due to my long torso or doing too many sqats!) These are very dramatic. The wool is nice but they are not lined (although the description says they are). They are very fitted around the hip and waist with a high rise. I think you want these to be close to the body or the line gets lost in so much fabric, but not so tight. For reference, I think they are a touch loose on the model wearing the bright ocean color. I have a small waist and long torso, and this is definitely the type of pant that accentuates a curvy waistline and bottom. If you're an hourglass shape, these should work well for you. Sadly the 0 in black is sold out, but I ordered the grey to see how sizing will run. I think if these fit well, they are a piece you can keep in your closet for years, but I think the fit will be difficult for many people!
I have also been interested in the wool slouch pant in charcoal and they finally popped back in the larger of my two sizes (which may not work in this style). I haven't seen any pics or reviews online other than on the JCrew site and wanted to try these. They could be really cute or an MC hammer inspired disaster. FWIW I love harem pants.

    1. I agree all around with this description and great review. I received mine last night and think they are gorgeous - but for my slightly petite frame (5'4 and about 115, but with muscular short legs) these overwhelmed me and will likely be going back. I got a 4P and that is the right size although would still need to get hemmed even if I were to wear with heels.

    2. Thanks for the review! I have this in my wish list. I'm petite too, so my concern is the pants not overwhelming me. It's excluded from the promo, I will wait when it's included.

    3. Thanks for the review Suzanne! I'm also long in the torso so I hope these fit and don't make me look like I have longest butt ever! I ordered two sizes but hope the smaller size fits because I will get that pair on Friday. The other pair which is now sold out won't ship until Dec. 2. I want them before the parties start! I'm disappointed they aren't lined!

    4. Also saying thanks for your review! I have my eye on those pants, too.

    5. Somehow when I ordered they were not excluded from the promo (I think it was the stacked promo last week) so I got them for a fair price. That's one of the reasons I want this size to work!

    6. Stray cat, I don't think they make my butt look long at all, but that could be because of the proportions between my waist and hips, and the fact that these flare out pretty much where the butt meets the thigh (and the pleats start higher in the front).

    7. Despite being overwhelming, they don't make my butt look long either. I got mine on promo when they offered spend a certain amount and get $x off. So still pricey but although not lined, I do think they are good quality. I forgot to say 4p is my larger of two sizes, but not necessarily sizing up. Thanks!

    8. Got the wide leg pants in wool in the next size and oddly enough there is no difference between the 00 and the 0. FWIW, the 00 is black and the 0 is gray, so maybe it's the material? I would imagine there should be about a 1/2 inch to an inch difference in the sizes. I know in the past there has been.

    9. Also got the slouchy wool pants, charcoal, size 0, these are a miss for me. I do like a harem style but there is an odd stiffness about the way the crotch lies and it doesn't work whether I wear them lower or higher. Extremely unflattering, although comfy. But for comfy I have sweats that at least I can work out in. I don't even think it would be worth it to try and size down--although they might look better, I don't think they will suit my needs. Pluses—I do love the material and the color.

  5. Happy Tuesday, JCA’s! I stopped in the other day and checked out a few things.

In-store only (for now?) wool cable sweaters with shoulder buttons - In my yearly quest for an ivory or white cable sweater that doesn’t feel bulky, I noticed these folded on a table. There was ivory, yellow, a multi-colored bronzy brown, and an ivory and navy rugby-striped version. Tag said “100% wool”. I took the ivory one and the striped one into the fitting room, and was disappointed to find that they were too short (I have a short torso) and the neck hole was so small I could barely get it over my head. If you like cropped sweaters you’d probably like this one.

Three-quarter-sleeve collar T-shirt (e4828) - Okay, I think I get what they were going for with this one (this oldie) but I think it missed the mark in terms of the fabric (I didn’t try it on). It felt as thin as a tissue tee, but had a chunky zipper in the back. I don’t see how it could hold up to washing.

Tunic sweater (e5984) - Agree with the online reviews that this is not a tunic. The combination of the dropped shoulders with the front seaming made it fall very strangely on my frame, looking like it clung at the chest, belled out at the waist, and clung back in at the hem. You can kind of see the weird folding in the first model pic online. I think that it could have worked better if it had either just the dropped shoulders or just the front seaming, but not both.

Striped turtleneck (e4851) - Cute, TTS, fabric felt similar to the oversized striped turtleneck. Nothing too special. May try to grab it on sale + %.

Open cardigan sweater (e1387) - Tried the XS in heather pewter. Nice color, felt a bit like Brillo, and I didn’t like the slits at the hem which IMO, made it feel even more oversized than it was. I like that the sleeves weren’t dropped on this one, but they seem to be unable to nail what should easily be a best seller. Why can't they do the open cardigan from a few years back in 100% merino?

They were doing some unpacking and setup at my store and it was nice to see more of a holiday vibe. The sweaters were making my eyes itch like crazy - I wonder if it was the alpaca in some of them? My skin’s not particularly sensitive to the knits but I felt like I needed some Visine after I left the B&M.

    1. And some Factory reviews that I can't recall if I posted...

Factory funnel neck sweatshirt (e0820) - I liked this one and found it TTS. Although the funnel is large, I didn’t feel like it was too big (the retail version felt enormous). Although the description states “cotton/wool”, its 48/26/16/10 cotton/acrylic/wool/nylon.

Factory cable-knit crew neck sweater (e1401) - In my usual S, I felt like I could’ve sized down. It seemed a tiny bit more yellow than in the online pic, had a nice thick knit, but I don’t think that it was very flattering on me. Even though I felt like I could’ve sized down, the two vertical cables stretched out when I had it on, showing a very large pull in the weave. Just not right for me.

Factory confetti sequin tee (e4798) - The sequins were sewn on this one very securely. They are also on the back of the arms but not on the back of the torso. I keep ignoring the tan/wheat colored backgrounds on these Factory striped shirts in the hope that they’ll be more white/ivory IRL, but they never are and that beigey tone just doesn’t work with my coloring.

    2. thanks for the review of the Open Cardigan Sweater. I'm thinking of taking a size down (XS from my normal S). I want it oversized though. Any comments on the QUALITY?

    3. Thanks for the review of the cable sweater w/shoulder buttons; looks like it's item E5683 online now (Perfect Cable Sweater). So disappointing to hear about the length, and I am not even short-waisted. It looks really nice, too.

  6. Black watch plaid tuxedo pants - so, I am about 0 for 5 on trying J.Crew pants this season. I ordered these against my better judgment only because I'm such a black watch plaid sucker. These beauties are gorgeous IRL and are lined, but the fit woes continue. I ordered the larger of my two J.Crew pant sizes, and I would have needed to go up even one more size for them to fit comfortably in the thighs and waist. (the alternative would be to just not sit or move while wearing them - I'm not kidding they were skin tight on the thighs) They clung to my bottom in a very not-work-appropriate way, and I'm not even that bootylicious! There was ample room in the hip area, so if I sized up they would probably look like jodphurs on me.
I'm really perplexed with the pant fit issues at J.Crew...I understand that it's just a number and not to get hung up on the size, but seriously what woman wants to go up two sizes? And further, it's almost impossible to know what size to order in the first place. I am not having this issue at comparable stores.

    1. I go up a size in Marties and do not even get me started on the sizing of jeans. another point is all the different washes (colors) of jeans. they even fit different. C

    2. You described how I feel with every single pair of J.Crew pants I try on. I've been having much better luck at Uniqlo. Somehow their rise is comfortable and the pant legs are slim and elegant without being tight.

      Delete
    3. I ordered these too and sent them back. Very tight in the legs and butt and I am very thin. Not sure who these will fit? Kate Moss maybe?

      Delete
    4. Unknown - Yeah, J.Crew jeans are a nightmare as far as fit goes for me. I have 4 (!!) different sizes in my closet that all fit. I can understand being 2 different pant sizes at any given store depending on rise/cut/fit, but 3 or 4 is ridiculous.

Flower Power - I'll have to check out Uniqlo's pants!

    5. Are the black watch pants a side zip or front zip?

    6. Gigi - front zip with hook & eye closure.

  7. Has anyone seen the HOLLY SWEATER (item e6038) in the heather azure color? is it closer to the lighter blue the model is wearing or the darker blue in the individual sweater pic?

    Replies
    1. The azure is closer to the darker blue in the individual picture. It is a really pretty blue, similar to the hthr dockside blue of the relaxed wool turtleneck sweater, but with a tinge more turquoise. HTH

  8. Loving all the detailed reviews on this site today (and lately)!

I tried the Micropleated Midi Skirt, item C8793 , in pesto, which is currently selling for about $49, and it was a pleasant surprise!

I usually shy away from fit and flare styles from J.Crew, as the skirts usually hug my hips weirdly and adds unnecessary weight, but this one actually is cut to suit my narrow-hipped-big-butt frame. The fabric is nice (poly but feels like silk chiffon), and the pleats look like they'll hold their shape without much drama. The pesto is a muted dark sage green--nice for fall.

It's a really elegant little skirt - I just ordered the navy as well and will be stalking the sepia for popbacks.

  9. Received an order today:

Campbell Blazer in velvet with peak lapel (Item e4085). This runs small. I wear a 0 in the Regent blazer, and I could barely button the jacket in a 0. Its a cute jacket, but I don't think I'll send it back for a bigger size. I just won't wear it enough to justify it, and I have the old Eden blazer in navy velvet if I want to satisfy my velvet fix.

Collection Luxe Faux Fur Scarf (Item e6681) in the now sold out butternut color. I managed to grab this at a time when it wasn't excluded from promos, so I got it for 30% off. I am a sucker for faux fur and this is simply gorgeous. Soft, vibrant, truly luxe. My only hesitation is that it matches exactly none of my winter coats. This color would be gorgeous with cream or brown, which are basically the two colors I don't have. I have to try it on with a few things and see.

    4. Uggg. I solved my coat problem by ordering the long peacoat in heather cloud (grey). The yellow looks so great with grey, and I've been eying that coat since it came out. Nothing like shopping causing more shopping ;).

    5. Ha! I just ordered the Regent topcoat in camel! It popped in my petite size late afternoon. I hope it ships!
Now I have to choose between the Teddy Jacket or Regent Topcoat.

  11. More reviews from an afternoon delivery—
The good: Glitter Elsies! Finally! These may be the only crew purchase I keep this season! Really pretty. I ended up with the 9 (ordered the 8.5 last week which still hasn't shipped, tried to cancel but they can't but it's still in process.). The heels are really slender but the height is manageable and they are very special. I'm hoping to wear them all season long with my favorite jeans for festive (yet not dressy) events...but...
The bad: I got my second pair of point sur denim. These are the cropped in the Darwin wash. In comparison, last week I got the shore ditch selvedge in the Chipman wash. I barely know why they show models wearing these since they don't fit anything like what we see. I ordered a 25 in both. The chipman are meant to be high rise but they were too big to be high rise and when I tried to wear them lower they bunched oddly around the crotch. The Darwin wash in 25 is more fitted everywhere except the lower leg. Not boot cut, a straight leg, but thus far (I just put them on) they remind me of Gap jeans from the 90s. They kind of make my hips look square and don't look at all the way they do on the model. For that (which is more the look I was going for) I'd need to size up at least one size, maybe more. They seem to be Stretching a bit as I wear them but the fit just doesn't seem to work. They also flatten my butt (first thing my husband said). On a positive note, the rinse is really nice and remind me of a great pair of vintage Levi's. As much as I would love a pair of the point sur denim it's not worth the risk of ordering and returning (especially when many are final sale!) when I can't try on a bunch of styles of these in store to get a better idea.
Also got a boy shirt I think in grey and white stripe. Size 2. Fits nicely and good length. Not boxy on me.

    1. Uh oh, I'm waiting on another size in the Point Sur Darwin wash. The first pair was too small in the hip. I also have a feeling these won't work on me either. Glad the Elsies worked for you though!

    2. I'm eating my words! Since the jeans are final sale (though my store probably would take them back) I decided to wear them in the house a bit and see if the material softened up. If I wear them high rise, they are very reminiscent of 501s. I'm more comfortable wearing them a little lower, but as the denim is softening they remind me of the greatest jeans ever, (I'm totally dating myself) Madonna in the papa don't preach video, complete with (this is from memory) a striped tee and ballet flats. Very Parisian and very JCrew. (Now I need to google the video and see if my memory from over 30 years ago is correct.)

  12. Just received the Elsie Plaid Pumps with Bow in black persimmon E4999. No comments online but almost completely sold out. I LOVE them. They are gorgeous. The plaid is understated and elegant, the bow is not too 'sweet' at all. the shape of the shoe with this pattern is so beautiful. I was on the fence, but ordered them to check them out anyway as the sizes were disappearing fast. So glad I did. I bounce up and down a 1/2 size in Jcrew shoes and chose the higher of my two sizes for these because of the pointy toe. They fit nicely right now but fear they may really stretch our with wear since they are fabric and not leather. My other size is sold out though so I will likely just keep these.Highly recommend if you catch these shoes on pop-back. I find a lot of Jcrew shoes a little overpriced. I got them on the 25% off and free shipping though, so I don't feel so guilty!

  13. I just noticed that the Bennett cross body bag in Scarlet is now on promo less 50% online. I have it in black and I really like this bag. I think it just went this morning. Nice quality bag and I like the true red. I think it will be a nice pop of color.

  14. :: Reviews ::

Petite Midi Sweater Skirt in navy (e6046) - Ordered this in a P2. It does not fit TTS. A tad snug but it doesn't bother me. I could easily go up to a P4 if I wanted to. Its very swingy. The construction of the skirt reminds me of a 1950's poodle skirt, all it needs is a tule ;-). The only top I can think of pairing it with is a fitted sweater. Nothing too fussy that it will clash with the skirt.

Pleated Midi skirt in metallic (c9137) - Ordered this in a size 2. It does not fit TTS. It runs small, that I have to order a 4. The length was mid-calf on me. I was surprised that the length wasn't that bad on, since it wasn't petite. I thought the gold metallic would look garish and just out there, but I didn't feel that with this skirt. One thing I didn't like is that it wrinkles easily. That's the deal breaker for me. So I'm not sure if I would reorder this in the correct size. I'm trying to be practical and choosey with what I buy...

Also received the St James Slouchy T-Shirt in ecru marine - nothing special. Size XS is slouchy indeed.

Collection Cashmere Short Cardigan Sweater in bluestone multi (e2078) - Ordered this in size S. Fits TTS (I'm 36B). The color has specks of lavender and blue, and I see lavender more than blue on this. Honestly I have enough sweaters to last me for a while...this was a purchase to see if I can pair it with the midi sweater skirt. Pairing didn't work out, so its going back.

    1. @JSR I have been looking at that skirt too. What is your regular size, a 2? I am a 0 and I usually size up in midi or full skirt. Should I get a 2? I was hoping to see it in store but it isn't out yet and I might just ordered it to get it out of my system. A bit bummed that it isn't included in the promo but I still have that $25 off $125 coupon plus free shipping...

  16. Two more reviews: relaxed wool turtleneck with rib trim and shrunken wool turtleneck (merino). Both black, size XS.
I haven't worn turtlenecks in a few years because my skin was too sensitive but these don't seem to irritate at all.
I love the fabric of the relaxed fit, but the length doesn't work for me. It's very soft yet light weight, but still feels warm. The front length is ok but the long tail is awkward.
The shrunken turtleneck has a slightly dressier feel. Even though I have a long torso, this is a nice option with skirts and the wide leg pants in black. A very chic classic. Pretty sure I will keep this.
I ordered a few other sweaters so will make final decisions after comparing fit.
