JCA "Help Style Me!" Weekly Post

This is the weekly "Help Style Me!" post, where we can share items we are having trouble putting outfits together with. Elaine (in this post) says it best, "You know, that thing you bought because you love it and you keep pulling it out and then putting it away without wearing it?"

Please share your J.Crew item (either that you own or are thinking about getting) that you would love help creating an outfit with.

Also, please help out by offering your styling advice. Feel free to include links to your blog (where you incorporated that piece) or to Polyvore (where you showcased an outfit with that piece). Thanks in advance! :)

  1. New promo up. WINTER for 25% off $150 or 30% off $250. Get a coat while promo prices still in effect. Act quickly.

    1. I saw that too. Managed to snag a green cocoon coat for 159.25 and the herringbone vest for $67! Finally, a west coaster perk as all the mid-west/easterners get all those fab popbacks! :)

  2. OT but has anyone checked out the new arrivals page? I think someone at Jcrew pulled the trigger too soon. Items are listed with a description of: Item short descr. Please update at The product level???? Some have no photo and others are repeated several times if you scroll through the whole list. Some goodies there though: love the collection mixed media sweater. Don't know if I can stand to look at those red Jenna glasses on that chic all Minh though!

  3. I have a general style question - what do you ladies wear on your feet when it's cold but not snowy out? I see the catalog styled with ballet flats and strappy heels but I'm not wearing those when it's in the 30's out. I keep defaulting to sneakers but am curious as to what you stylish JCA's wear.

    1. Flats and loafers when I'm going to work or doing some other indoor activity. If you're only braving the cold for a few minutes in between car and destination, there shouldn't be an issue with flats/loafers/mocs.

Leather boots for work, or when I'm going to be outside a little longer. I love Madewell's Archive boots.

    2. silver_lining, I start wearing boots as soon as it gets near freezing. If that feels too wintry I will go for a pair of oxfords or loafers, usually with a heel.

    3. Reply didn't work on my first post, but if you are like me and have to do a lot of walking outside, boots are essential. I second the love for the archive boots, though I really think they are not worth $300. I only purchased them because I was able to snag them under 200. My favorite boots are my La Canadienne Mazy's, which are weather proofed, warm, and so comfy.

    4. If I'm in a hurry or lazy, I wear my Dansko clogs. I don't care what they look like, they are the best shoes ever for me. No laces to fuss with, and they fit me perfectly. Plus I get to be taller in them. I wouldn't wear these with anything other than bootcut jeans or cords, but that's what I wear a lot. I have black ones and a reddish-brown color. I'm trying to branch out and wear other shoes but I always come back to these. I probably need a serious style intervention :-)

    5. I do short boots that will fit under my pants, or clogs/slip ons like these.

But I still wear my flats, too! It's 34 here today and I am wearing my viv flats. Then again, I will be outside for grand total of about 5 minutes today, so.

    6. I struggle with this to and even if I'm outside for just a few minutes my feet are cold when I'm inside too! Once its cool enough I'm pretty much either in skinnies with tall boots or boot/straight legs with Frye 14L boots under (sometimes I roll the cuff, sometimes I don't). If I'm dressed for work which isn't often as I work from home I wear heavy tights with heels/skirts or boots. I pretty much give up on things like cafe capris and cropped but not skinny pants.

    7. Thanks, ladies - you've given me some good ideas!

    8. I've struggled with this too. That's part of why I've loved all the booties around lately. Those are great, tho I must say the only JC ones I really are the MacAlister wedges. Wearing those today actually. Otherwise I'm always in boots because I feel weird wearing socks with loafers or flats. :) I recently ordered some zipcode boots from Madewell, but they're back ordered till Jan.

    9. Dressy oxfords with heels for me!

    10. I was struggling with this same thing! I ended up getting a pair of Clarks booties (these: http://www.6pm.com/clarks-chris-sydney?zfcTest=mat%3A1) and I love them. I was initially eyeing the Madewell zipcode booties, but they just didn't seem as practical as the Clarks for work and in snow. I weatherproofed the Clarks for snow, and they look great with dress pants and jeans and ok with some skirts/tights too.

  5. Can anyone comment on sizing for the Everly pumps? Do they fit small, should I size up or take my regular size?

  6. Can anyone give me some holiday outfit ideas for the Collection sequin colorblock tank? I have the ivory/tan version that Feeling JCrewzy has in this post: http://feelingjcrewzy.blogspot.com/2012/09/j-crew-october-rollout-reviews-part-1.html

I'm trying to put together an outfit that doesn't involve jeans.

    1. black pencil skirt? or a skirt that matches the bottom color?

    2. Minnies? Black of course works but some of the darker colors would be good too...maybe the forest green ones?

    3. You know what would be nice? a Burgundy bottom (or "oxblood" as it's called this season)

    4. Thank you! Those are some great suggestions.

Unfortunately Minnies and other skinny pants are not do-able for me even though I love how they look on others. With my pear shape and proportionally short legs, they just make me look dumpy.

  7. This is a little off topic, but has anyone ever altered J. Crew blazers/coats? I'm tempted from time to time to order 1 size bigger from the sale section if my size is sold out but not sure if it's worth it. I've also been stalking ebay for the coral bella jacket and have found it in 2 sizes bigger from time to time but unsure about altering it...any thoughts?

    1. A very thin friend of mine had a tailor slim a lady day coat from the interior seams. It looked beautiful and and didn't appear obviously altered. I'm not sure how much she paid.
