J.Crew Reviews {straight from the JCAs!}

This is the weekly "J.Crew Reviews {straight from the JCAs}" post, to help each other share our reviews.

So if you have recently purchased, or stopped by a J.Crew store to try on an item (or two) from J.Crew, maybe you might be willing to share that information with us in this post.

Also, this request is not just limited to clothes. Please feel free to discuss bags, shoes, jewelry, accessories, etc.

In particular, if you could mention a few of the noteworthy details like fit, size, fabric, and the like— that would be fantastic! Thanks in advance! :)

  1. Sorry a bit unrelated but I caught an ad for this week's Project Accessory. Seems Jenna Lyons will be the guest judge this week. I haven't watched that show (and this latest season of Project Runway kinda was disappointing)...but thought it may be of interest.

  3. the vintage thermal tees have gotten good reviews by the JCAs,but has anybody tried the vintage thermal sweatshirt?

  4. OT, but if anyone is not happy with their P6 navy stadium elements coat or if you see one in your store, please e-mail me! They sent me the wrong coat, and now my size in the navy is sold out!!

  7. Love the azelea striped thermal tee, just the right amount of bright pink so that it is not so overwhelming. The fit is more roomy and the tee is longer than the henley.

  8. Any comments on the waffled cashmere sweater with zips? How is the weight of it? Length? Sizing? ...pilling?

  9. Hi Ina - I'm wearing the vintage thermal sweatshirt today. It's most definitely boxy and looks just like the website pic - larger at the shoulders and almost cropped. It's thick, cozy and warm and I wear it over longer tees. I have a feeling this one may eventually get marked down quite a bit because of the boxiness.

Lots of new additions to the sale section today.

  11. I returned home on Sunday after being gone for 2 weeks and finally got to try on the Sterling skirt in double-serge wool that I had pre-ordered in both colors. This skirt is an absolute LOVE for me! The pencil skirts at J.Crew are always an odd fit for me, as I need the size 0 to fit at the waist, but then they can be a bit too snug on the hip/thigh area. The sterling skirt fits perfectly at the waist in the size 0 and since it is a-line, it flairs slightly away from the hips meaning the skirt fits well there, too. The Heather acorn is my favorite color, but the Heather carbon is also nice and will be a great wardrobe staple. I will be able to easily wear the skirt casually on a day-to-day basis to fit my lifestyle. (I do want to note that the size 0 heather carbon is a little bigger than the heather acorn. I think I'm going to try another skirt to see if I just got an off-size one. It could be that this color is running a bit larger than the lighter shade though).

I also ordered the Factory Black Watch tartan wool pant and love them, as well. I got them in sizes 2 and 4 after hearing they ran slightly small. The size 2 fits well at the waist with the thighs being a tad snug. The size 4 are large at the waist and slightly baggy at the thigh, but do feel more comfortable on. I can easily wear a belt to help the waist fit though. I'm sure the pants will stretch out so I should probably keep the size 2, but I'm not sure right now. I may keep both so that I have a pair to wear on "skinny days", as well as "not-so-skinny" days.

  12. Fabric on the purple tinsel tweed pencil skirt is cheap like another poster mentioned last week. (should have listened!) The metallic fibers really "stick up" and are itchy and pokey in the back/legs when you sit down. I sat in my for about 10 minutes and it was driving me crazy!

The pencil skirt fit like a dream. I really like them but not this one.

  13. I recieved by box from JCrew 30% off sale yesterday and I got the minimalist mockneck sweater in heather graphite- I love this. I ordered a small and it fits nice for work, however, if you want more of a comfortable baggy look I would size up. I ordered the Elsie Skirt in Nightfall Floral and I have to say I was very disappointed. It was short and the fabric was very cleap- it really did not look anything like the photo. This will be going back tomorrow. I had a few other items like minnie pants and other basic sweaters. Excited to see what promos will run for black Friday!

  14. LizPoms, the waffled cashmere sweater with zips is one of the smallest fitting cashmere sweaters IMO. I looked at it in the store last Sat with the manager that always helps me. There was no XXS but he showed me the XS to show me how small it was (ie, he thought this style would work for me). It also seemed like a nice feel in terms of the waffle knit - seemed midweight, not esp thick. Definitely not cropped, good length (unless you have an esp long torso). But I wouldn't buy your true size unless you like a fitted look.

    ReplyDelete
  15. The Emmett flat ankle boots seem to have quality control issues. Back at the beginning of the month, I ordered a pair in black, and the zipper was broken on one boot. I exchanged for a pair in warm sienna, and it had dye irregularities - it looked like there was a small dark stain on the front toe of one boot. I asked CS to send me another pair, and the second pair, one boot was slightly lighter in shade than the other boot! Since I really like the design, I decided to keep the first pair (with the 'stain' on the toe) as I figured it wouldn't bug me as much as having boots in two slightly different shades. Still, be forewarned!

I also received a few other items from the 25% off promos:

    - long black leather gloves: LOVE these - they are lined in 100% silk!! Worth every penny.

    - Polka dot cotton/silk popover: disappointing, so it got sent back. The dots are actually beige, not white. Fits TTS.

    - silk/cashmere scarf in bright dahlia: gorgeous colour, really looking forward to wearing this!

  16. I 2nd Genny's review of the purple tinsel tweed pencil skirt. The color is absolutely beautiful and it fits well, but the fabric is appalling. It doesn't even feel like fabric; it's more like some sort of metallic craft paper. I can't imagine this skirt lasting for more than a couple wears. It's definitely going back.

    ReplyDelete
  17. If anyone has bought or tried the Silk Rhea popover, would love to hear a review! TIA

  18. I have a few top reviews up on my blog included the Heart Me sweater, Blythe blouse in a dot pattern, Honeycomb sweater and the Glimmer tee.

    See here.

  19. I am against the grain of these reviews. I returned my neon azela/champagne vintage thermal tee. I thought the stripes were too bright and the shirt didn't do anything for me. I kept the Heart Me sweater (regular size XS). I thought that while the quality of the knit was not the greatest, the design was really cute and unique. Also, the shape of the sweater was cute on me.

  20. Random question..anyone know when there will be new arrivals on the site?

  21. Valentina Pumps in Red Snakeskin:
I want to put them on the stand and stare at them. They are TDF!
Everything leather including soles. Soft and comfortable. Well, they'd better be at this price.
Even getting them with 25% plus 8% ebates just hurts my common sense.
Are they worth the money? The snake skin seems fragile and high maitenance, they will be definitely be special occasion shoes. I have a feeling the workmanship is not the greatest (but I am far from expert, we need xoxo here).
I could easily spend the day wearing them which I cannot say about the torture inducing Louboutins I tried at Neiman the other day.
Maybe I will have them for years and eventually be buried in them?
What do you think??? I need help here...

    Foundry Pants in Wool
They are unlined and itchy. But I also considered cafe capris too itchy, so if you were Ok with them, these might be fine too.
I think I would need to wear one of those lightweight skiing liners, which is OK by me, they are actually more comfortable than poly lining. The wool is thicker but still drapes well and the color is great. Mint sage green heathered with brown. Goes with everything. The fit is similar to cotton Foundry, which means size down. I think they are even looser in waist and slightly slimmer in hips. I sized down from my regular 4 to 2 and they are definitely not tight.
They need to be styled right but they do have a potential.
Overall, nice pants just overpriced imo. I will re-order if they are maybe $99 plus 30% off.

    ReplyDelete
  22. I tried the Merino Cambon cardigan, and took it back. I loved the concept, but the fit was very blah and rather shapeless. Too bad.

    ReplyDelete
  23. I tried on the vintage waffle tees in store but did not like the colors or fit.

I ordered some boys waffle shirts in size 14 and really like them! Better colors for me, not too long and really comfy.

    ReplyDelete
  24. ajc, well if you wear them for years they will be worth the money!
They sound excellent. Does snakeskin fall apart easily? Is there some kind of protector that could be applied to them. You're right we need xoxo here!

Thanks as well for the review of the wool foundry pants. I have the cotton and I like them. I thought the color of the wool looked great online. Are they 100% wool or a blend?
If they were all wool I'd consider them with silk long johns underneath. They'd be like old-time ski pants.

Metallic craft paper!! LOL. Good one.

  26. I am currently with baby belly, so my only IRL reviews will be of the items that can conceivably fit over the growing girth that used to be my waist, but I did want to bite on the sterling skirt in my typical J. Crew A-line skirt size before it sold out. I *knew* that it wouldn't fit, but I tried it on anyhow, so for those of you interested, here is my very brief review:

I bought this skirt in a size 6, which is one down from my double serge pencil skirt size (which I size for my hips, not waist). This skirt fits true to size if you can size down in A-line skirts and dresses. The hips fit great, skimmed right over my largest part. I can tell that next fall when I am ready to wear this properly that it will fit perfectly at my waist, which usually is 28 or so inches (I have an additional 3 or so now).

The wool is soft and the pockets are awesome. I seriously heart this skirt. If I already didn't own a grey A-line skirt, I would absolutely consider the other color.

I hope that J. Crew hears us and makes this in multiple colorways next fall.

The skirt hits at the top of my knee, but at 5'8" and with most of my height in my legs, this is not a surprise.

I should have a few IRL reviews of the elements coat and lula jacquard ballet flats on my blog later tonight (will post here when I do so).

  27. Dinagideon -- I didn't know you were pg...congratulations! And thanks for the great review of the Sterling Skirt. I would totally order one if it came in more colours.

  28. OT - does anyone know what the green pants paired with the wildcat scoopneck blouse are?

    ReplyDelete
  29. @ ajc: If you love them, keep them. You'll wear them until they wear out, which will probably be years from now since they're not an everyday shoe.

Picked up a few Factory items during their 30% off sale last week, mainly some cozy Christmas gifts and graphic tees for friends' kids. This is when Factory > Regular J.Crew...I'm just "Meh" about most of the clothing, but their graphic tees, knits, and sleep pants are just as good as Regular and the prices are better. FYI: the Factory Painted Snowflake Tee says it's black, but it's actually a dark charcoal. Hardly matters - it's super cute and very soft.

    ReplyDelete
  30. ajc, keep them. Dani is right, you'll wear them for years. They are a classic shoe that will never, ever go out of style. I am so jealous that you own them!

I have the Sydney snakeskin flats from a few years ago and I have worn them A TON, and they are still in perfect shape. I think they are more durable than say, the regular Valentinas which are made of that super delicate later that scratches so easily. The dark red/texture seem more durable.

    ReplyDelete
  31. FYI for those who have purchased any unlined wool pants. My mother suggested "Vermontcountrystore.com"They have a pair of pant liners- they are like a slip but for pants. They come so that you can cut off at a lecy edge so you get the correct length-if you have capris or full length pants- and the unfinished edge is hidden by the lace. They reallly do make your pants hang better and look more finished.

  32. Jules Dress in Wildcat - I first ordered this when it was a cardholder only preview. It was backordered, so I canceled that order and ordered again when the 25% off promo was going on. A better price, but it still went back. I actually really liked the fit of the dress. Nice clean lines that were flattering to my mostly straight figure. The main issue was the print . . .it did absolutely nothing for me and washed me out terribly. I'm pretty fair skinned with blonde hair and it did not look good on me. Also, as expected, the fabric was disappointing. They really should have done this in a silk. Another example of close, but not quite and please don't scrimp on the fabric quality.

Dream Argyle Sweater - I ordered this hoping it would replace a worn out version I had from J Crew from 2007 or earlier. Sadly, again, the color just was not good for me. So it went back.

Honeycomb cable sweater - When I was doing my returns, I ended up buying this in ivory because the store had 20% off. So I got for $64. I now see that this color is on-line for $60. Annoying! But at least it is only $4 and I would have paid more for shipping. I digress . . .cute basic sweater and fulfilled my need/hunt for a cable sweater in ivory since I got rid of an old one.

Golden stripe bracelet - LOVE!! Of all the items I purchased recently, this was by far the best . .and the best value! I got the navy and just love it. I've worn it twice already and received several compliments. Might consider buying more colors!

Blouson Dress in purple paisley - I got with the extra 30% off and this is a keeper. Great print, it is actually silk . . thankfully! It fits well, but the only thing I'll note is that even though it is called "blouson," I did not find it blousey or loose on top at all. In fact it was somewhat tight across the chest. I'm fairly average in that department, but if you are more well-endowed, you might need to size up. Just my take.

Whew! Sorry for the novel . . .had three different orders and a store trip to recap.

    Happy Thanksgiving to all!

    ReplyDelete
  33. sterling skirt(s) - perfect! I second FFM and dinagideon, only I think I'm going to keep both. Unless another color appears before the return deadline is up? Then - I dread to think it - I might wind up keeping 3.

  34. Dang, I've been admiring the Sterling skirt but just can't pull the trigger 4 weeks from my due date with a 40" waist! Waaaah!

    ReplyDelete
  35. I'm new to JCrew but just had a consult at the local store with a personal shopper and geez oh Pete! The sizing is all over the place.
    Minnies - 0
Pixie pant - 6 (I wore it with the tags on all day yesterday, just in case, and it didn't lose it shape or stretch out! LOVE)
    Matchstick cords - 6
High waisted skinny jeans - 4
Ultra knit sweatpants - Small but too big and stretched out to kingdom come after 1 day of wearing.

I'm typically a size 4 in designer , 2 at the Gap or Ann Taylor.

I regret not getting the minnie in navy and red/orange. Who loves them?

    ReplyDelete
  36. ajc, I love the snakeskin Valentina pumps. They are gorgeous shoes and thank goodness they are all leather, that will help them last and be comfortable enough to wear for hours on end. This style and color is truly classic and flattering to the foot, you could wear them forever IMO.

Snakeskin is quite durable if you treat it right and J.Crew has been making snakeskin shoes and accessories for years so obviously it is a success for them.

The one shoe online looks pretty good to my eye, from what you can see in an online stock photo, maybe just a touch of stray glue where the inside upper meets the sole when looking at the heel shot closeup but it could be reflection.

Here are some quality checks I would perform for these shoes:

    * check them over carefully for any excess glue or misalignment of the materials, any scratches or flaws in the skins used;

    *make sure the heel feels firmly attached and the lift is secure on the heel;

    * make sure the sole is firmly attached and the upper doesn't separate when you push it up from the sole slightly with your thumb;

*make sure the shoes are a mirror image of each other including the cut and placement of the skins.

If these shoes are really perfect for you then I would get them. You could buy a dozen other pairs for less but if you can always wear these to make the perfect outfit and your feet are comfortable and you love them then they are worth it IMO. I've let a few perfect items go and I always regret it.

Let us know what you decide!

  38. Those who have tried the Honeycomb Cable Sweater - Is it roomy enough for layering over a shirt in your regular size or would you recommend sizing up? TIA

    ReplyDelete
  39. ajc, snakeskin shoes are somewhat delicate to the touch. To keep them healthy you should wipe gently against the scales with a soft cloth to remove dirt and dust. Apply a coating of matching cream polish if desired - ensuring that you polish with the grain of the scales. Apply reptile conditioner with a soft cloth with the grain of scales.

The yellowing of snakeskin is a by-product of exposure to the sun and the age of the shoes, and can not be reversed by cleaning products. It's best to store snakeskin products in a dust bag with a bit of breathing room.

Sorry to be such a thread hog, hope some of it is helpful.

  40. Amyoutlaw - thanks for the size comparison. That's really helpful. I certainly wish JC would be more consistent with their sizing. I hate having to send things back and their inconsistency makes me hesitant to order from them.

    ReplyDelete
  41. JCAs I need your advice. I'm going to order my first pair of JC flats-the glitter oxfords. I'm usually a 7 in JC heels (6.5 most other brands). What size do I order for JC flats? Thanks!

    ReplyDelete
  42. @ amyoutlaw: I love the Minnies, but only in the Stretch Cotton Twill...can't handle any wool right up against my legs - Itch City. Just had my PS do a WWFIFY search for the Vibrant Flame. It's great to get your size comparisons for pants...how crazy is that??? I've never had to size below a 4 or above a 6 in J.Crew bottoms, but I wouldn't be surprised if I did with the way their sizing has bounced around recently.

    ReplyDelete
  43. xoxo, thank you, I knew I could count on you. I will inspect the shoes when I get home and hopefully they will pass the scrutiny. I never owned snakeskin shoes so I was a little concerned about them being delicate as you can feel the scales under the touch.

    ReplyDelete
  44. The polka dot blousonn dress is on sale online. I know quite a few JCAs liked that one so I thought I'd mention it. HTH

    ReplyDelete
  45. @Whitney -- I agree about the Factory pjs and t-shirts. I ordered a few bits & bobs for my husband for Christmas, and was very happy with the quality (and price point!) of the flannel pj pants and Ts.

  48. OT - But wanted to warn...

  53. My chunky cashmere crewneck sweater arrived! But they sent the wrong color! Argg! I've been lusting after this for so long. However, my darling fiancee proceeded to tell me (very practically) that
    a) the olive green color will go with so many things, jeans, button downs, white, . . .
    b) you dont have much green in your wardrobe
    c) it makes your eyes look green
Times like these I love him! Anyways, the sweater is absolutely beautiful, so soft, thick and luxurious! It fits TTS but is quite long in the sleeve and body length. So I'm keeping the olive I think :)
Also received 2 liquid silk skirts in a separate package, a navy and a supposed sandalwood which is bright (dahlia) pink. I love these skirts, but honestly, what is wrong with those people? 2 orders, both wrong.

Clicquot: Oh, yes, I am over half gone, too. ;)

  57. FYI, my ps let me know that the purple paisley skirt got marked down today in stores to 79.99.

My ps seemed to think that the 25% off $150 was a black Friday deal in the stores. hmm... I wonder if they've decided to start it early since so many other retailers are too?

  59. A little off topic but I had to share: I just got around to watching last week's Parks & Rec episode. Leslie Knope (the Amy Poehler character) is wearing a J Crew Double Cloth Metro Coat in Vibrant Flame. Looks great on her! 62. All this early holiday cheer made me suddenly crave a red blouse. So I ordered two of JC's new offerings (both are catalog/online only, sheesh...):

Silk Rhea popover -- A pretty blouse that reminded me of the earlier Bloussana (which I bought and love in "yagi blue", no reds were offered). Felt a bit oversized. Unfortunately the "bohemian red" wasn't red at all, more of a smoked salmon color. And the silk was shinier than I prefer, so I won't be trying other colors.

Lydia blouse -- A real disappointment. The silk felt so cheap that I would've guessed synthetic if not for the labels. And it badly needs some waist shaping. On the plus side, "maraschino red" is a beautiful real red, and the tie neckline is flattering. Can't make up for the lack of waist, though.

    Other recent promo orders:

Geometric chain necklace -- Arrived with one of the crystals detached, an easy fix thankfully. Clearly there are quality problems, but I might still keep it because the length and the level of bling are juuust right. I always like the antique gold finish & avoid the super shiny stuff.

Minimalist mockneck sweater -- Terrible. JC seems to think that necks rise straight vertically from our shoulders. However mine is angled forward, I'm afraid! So this completely flat, front-shaped-exactly-as-the-back sweater fit all wrong. What a sad waste of the wonderful merino knit fabric.

Mohair cardigan in camel leopard -- This one, originally a classic "ridealong", was the positive surprise in the batch. Cropped sweaters rarely look good on me, and I've been studiously avoiding the flood of animal prints. But this cardi is downright elegant. The dark colors just work. The V-neck is perfect. Gigi put up some photos on her blog recently; it looks fab on her as well. (Thanks Gigi!) Not a piece I'll be wearing all that often, it is short indeed, it requires a high-waisted bottom or a very well matched tee underneath... it's a keeper nevertheless.

  63. I have been lusting after the Sterling Skirt and now with the 25% off and I still haven't used my rewards card, I think now's the time. Especially with all the positive reviews.

So, what's the consensus on sizing? Size up on this one? size down? Fabulous Florida Mommy mentioned a possible difference between sizes of the acorn vs. the heathered gray....

    ReplyDelete
  64. OMG...The Sterling Skirt in acorn is already sold out! Or is it possible they've hidden the color for the 25% promo?

    ReplyDelete
  65. does anyone know of stores ny or nyc that leans toward combining student/teacher discounts with ongoing promos???? thanks!

    ReplyDelete
  66. Thanks Louise. I'm hoping they have it but if not I might order it when I get home. I was hoping to give it try-on as I'm not sure of the sizing!
I'll be pretty excited to see the Yorkdale JCrew today!

  67. Patsystone: The sterling skirt in heather acorn was sold out when I looked at it yesterday, so I don't think it is hidden for the promo...just gone, except for a size 6 that has popped back on the website this morning. As for sizing, I would say go one size down from your pencil skirt size if you are a pear shape. I usually have to get a size 2 in pencils at J.Crew so that it isn't too snug on my hips and have them tailored to fit at the waist. However, on the sterling and flair skirt in plaid I wear the size 0, which would be one size down from my pencil (and pant) size. HTH! :)

    ReplyDelete
  68. Louise and Dani: The Sterling skirt is showing as catalog/web only right now.

  69. dinagideon: How exciting to hear about your baby news...congratulations! :)

I completely agree about needing the Sterling skirt in the colors that the pencil skirt comes in. Hopefully they will listen to us and offer more colors very soon!

  70. (OT) FYI: There are a lot of new promo-priced items today that also get the 25% off with the YOURGIFT promo, such as Cashmere, Coats, Boots, perfect-fit tees, and a lot more. I listed the majority of them on my blog. Click here to see it. :)

  71. OT: I mentioned this in the Thanksgiving surprise post, but since this is a 'sort of' review, I am posting here, too. :)

For anyone who owns the Paradisa dress or even the Mirabelle dress in 'Vivid Poppy': I wanted to mention that the Acorn Fireball earrings and Acorn Fireball bracelet in 'Bright Papaya' look really cute with the dress. I know there is also a necklace, but I think it would compete too much with the embroidery. The earrings and bracelets are a nice compliment though. I own the Paradisa and picked up both the earrings and bracelet at the B&M yesterday. I'll be wearing them with the dress and my Concise Denim jacket from Anthro next spring.

The earrings and bracelet are both a nice size...not too large or too small. The current price with the extra 25% off is good, too. :)

  75. I just received my preordered Toggle Coat in Houndstooth Plaid, which is now sold out I believe.

The coat is one of the most figure flattering I've seen. I love the length and the cut. The pattern is a bit darker than imagined, which is nice. The Toggle closures are sort of have that cool rustic look about them. Fully lined, comfortable, TTS, there is a nice weight to it as well. As in, it's not completely light weight and could work well up until it gets around the 40s possibly.

The only thing I'm not digging is the catholic school collar. Not sure what you call it.

This item seems more old school Jcrew, and doesn't resemble anything else that I currently have in my closet or coats that I've purchased from them in the past. Overall I'm pleased with my once a year coat purchase.

  76. A couple of coat reviews: I am 5'2" 123 lbs. and have never felt comfortable in petite sizing. All of my J.Crew wool coats are regular size 4, though my Icon trench is a 2. I wanted the Boulevard Trench last year, but I recall swimming in a regular size. I ordered a P4 this year, but the shoulders were too tight and the sleeves came just to my wrist bone. I returned yesterday and decided to reorder a regular 4 just to see. If that doesn't work out, we'll see if I'm in the mood to reorder a P6...It took 3 chat sessions online to get the right list of measurements for a few sizes and the rep even suggested I try a P8! She may be right, but I wear a 0/XS in all J.Crew blouses so it just seems so weird.

Stadium-cloth Elements Coat: I wanted this last year in Dark Fatigue and finally ordered with the first 25% promo. I also tried out the Petite sizing with this one (P4). It was perfect!! This one is obviously supposed to be roomier than the Boulevard trench, so it makes sense. The sleeve length was great and so cozy. My only complaint is the faux pockets! There are little slant pockets higher up, but it looks kind of like I'm cupping my chest...I would say this coat is worth it with the 25% off, especially now at the $260 promo price + 25%.

One more! The Envelope Coat. Somebody returned a regular 4 in store. I spied it at the counter behind the registers and had to try it. GORGEOUS in sea salt with beautiful lining. Unfortunately, I was swimming in it. I think that even a P4 would have been too big - would probably get it in a regular 2 if I had unlimited funds!

Sorry to be a space hog - hope this helps!

  77. erin- I also have the Stadium Cloth Elements coat and I just wanted you to know that the lower pockets are real. They are just basted shut, like on mens suits. You have to remove the thread. I hope this helps. I do love the coat BTW.

  78. karend - thank you!! I kept feeling around and didn't find anything that felt like actual pockets and they are stitched completely as opposed to the tiny slant pockets, which only have a few stitches holding them shut. I am very excited to do coat surgery! Happy Thanksgiving!

  79. I've got 2 skirt questions. First, I know some of you purchased or tried the mixed media skirt. Is it really 22" long? It looks much longer on the model.

Has anyone tried on the pony skirt? The sizing is letter rather than number and I'd love some sizing guidance since I'm watching for a pop back.
