Love It or Leave It: Pleated Leather Trouser {goes with your leather tee!}

Pleated Leather Trouser
Item 32681
Regular: $350.00

J.Crew's new arrivals included this piece, which is described as:
The ease of a classic cuffed trouser reimagined in the most exquisitely supple, wafer-fine Italian leather. The effect? An addictive and wearable iteration of a classic you'll wear for years to come. (Did we mention we're obsessed?) Belt loops. Zip fly. Front pleats. Slant pockets, back welt pockets. 1 1/4" cuffs. Part of J.Crew Collection. Import. Dry clean. Available in select stores.
Much like the Leather Tee (refer to the "Questionable Item of the Week: Leather Tee {you read it right!}" post), I don't get these pants– a cuffed pleated leather trouser?

They just don't seem like J.Crew, let alone wearable. (Where does one wear these pants to? What would be paired with it?) Trouser + J.Crew = you know it! Leather pleated trouser + J.Crew = say what now?

What are your thoughts on the Pleated Leather Trouser ? Do you "love it" or would you "leave it"? Do you plan on getting these pants? If so, please share with us your review. :)

  1. Pleated leather trouser = quite possibly the worst idea J.Crew has ever had. Not sure if it trumps the poncho though...

  2. Actually, sort of classic. They come around every decade. The problem is they stretch out. If they were longer I might buy them but 25 inch inseam is too short for me. Same problem I have with all the cute blazers they have now; they don't come in tall sizes so fit me like boleros. Am I the only one?

  4. Considering I just ordered a pair of leather shorts from Urban Outfitters I'm going to say that in theory I am supportive... but leather shorts and tees are probably more practical than the pants. The pants would have to fit just right in way more places to look good, and it's probably not as easy to alter as fabric.

  5. The leather tee I could get into. These, not so much. I'd rather hunt the thrift stores to find an 80s pair than go for this abbreviated do-over.

  6. I like leather pants...they just aren't meant to be cropped and pleated...they should be long and lean and a little bada$$! They don't even look good on the model...

  7. I also like leather pants but wouldn't purchase a pleated pair.

  8. Looking for "..long and lean and a little bada$$!"? JCrew has just what you're looking for & they're down from $1,350 to $699: Leather Trouper Pants

Better hurry! They're down to one pair!

  9. I had a pair of DK Collection leather jeans (great tailoring, thank you Loehmann's!) that I loved. These, no so much. Pleated cropped and seams at the knee? Mom jeans?

  10. Wow, 1987 much? Looks like J.Crew fell into the Hot Tub Time Machine.
Perhaps we could collectively buy a pair and elect one of us to roll around on the hood of a Camaro as a promo for JCA? ;)

  11. Hi, Alexis! I wouldn't be caught dead in this or the tee.... and I can't imagine how you would wear them to be weather-appropriate.

That said, I was in Paris last week, and leather was ALL OVER the fashion mags and in window displays. There were leather dresses, leather shells, and leather shorts. Bravo to J Crew for being fashion forward. I must say it makes the catalog fun to look at, even if some of the pieces aren't suited for my closet or my wallet.

  12. I like leather clothing but in general not pants. They're a bit like wearing linen, they look good for the first 5 minutes, then the butt gets stretched out and the knees get saggy. I would go for a leather top or skirt in a heartbeat though.

Gem Twin, you're not alone at all. Many of J. Crew's jackets and vests are much too short in the torso for me and I end up with a waist seam that lands just under the bra and a hem somewhere around my navel :) Not a good look.

  13. My Michael Jackson doll from the '80s had pleated leather pants.

  14. I agree with gem twin. Leather pants are a classic. I too own a pair of leather shorts and the way they are made there is no worrying about stretching them out of shape etc. I like J.Crew pushing the fashion envelope, its an offering and we don't have to buy it. I am not a fan of pleated pants anyways but I bet we will see someone rocking them and they will look great. Kinda like the sequin harem pants, and sequin bloomer and denim overalls. A lot of negative comments about it and in the case of the sequin harem pants they were seen everywhere last fall. Personally I would like to see more irl pictures of people wearing some of the more fashion foward pieces.

  15. This helps explain why J. Crew is down 90%.

  16. uhhhhhh......whoa. i agree with JA. cropped, pleated leather pants a classic? no way!

i do actually like the leather trouper pants, but i'm guessing they fit like the regular troupers, which means i'd have some serious bagging action at the knees before long. nothx at that price.

also, LMAO @ hot tub time machine!

  17. Rebecca, LOL on the Hot Tub Time Machine. That movie was hilarious even though I don't remember much of the 80's since I was born more than halfway through the decade.

More trend-chasing and definitely would not spend my money on it.

  18. I was just reminded of that episode of Friends where Ross wears tight leather pants on a date and starts burning up. LOL.

Not for me. I feel like we should start taking bets on what leather item will be introduced next. I'm going to go with leather chaps, which will be styled over bloomer shorts with a tag line that everyone in the office is obsessed with their new leather chaps!

Seriously though, I have seen a few cute leather dresses and skirts this season, but I don't know if I'd get enough use out of them. Plus, I live in Florida so it's not the most practical.

  19. Ladies, as usual, your comments (both for and against the pants) are great.

I particularly enjoyed the Hot Tub Time Machine and Ross/Friends reference. Unfortunately, I now have the Black Eye Peas' song "Let's Get it Started" stuck in my head. ;)

  20. The leather of the trousers is too shiny. It should have been matte, like the tee. IMHO.

  21. I remember Marissa Webb wearing skin tight leather capri pants in several photos. She looked so good I wanted a pair. But she is so tiny and I'm not. Hope someone with lots of disposable income and great body rocks these pants.

  22. Ooops -- somebody in marketing goofed! These pants were supposed to be released NEXT Friday.

Pleated, cropped leather pants for Spring? Clearly an April Fools Day joke.

  23. I had a pair of leather jeans . . . in the 80s! I will be skipping that look this time around.

  24. I should add, though, that one some people leather pants can be a timeless signature look. Years ago I gave my 80s skinny leather jeans to my sis, who is an artist/artisan and lives in Europe. AFAIK she still wears them. On me, the lawyer, not so great any more. .

  25. I like leather jackets and skirts but not pants or shorts or tops! Would never wear them.

  26. Yeah, nice thought, poor execution. Leather pants are classic, but I agree that they should be fitted and sexy, or bada$$ as Gigi put it. :) Shiny and pleated do not say those things to me. The shininess makes them look more like vinyl to me.

I have to say, I could see the leather trend for fall. I really don't understand it for spring. I guess maybe the way they showed it in last month's Lucky - a cute tank and a-line skirt in spring colors. But the way JC did it, in dark colors with these particular cuts, just does not say spring to me. Oh well, at least it makes for fun conversation!

  27. I would like to see a nice matte-finish leather midi skirt (the real midi, not J Crew's mid-thigh midi). No pleats, just a subtle a-line.
