JCA "Help Style Me!" Weekly Post

This is the weekly "Help Style Me!" post, where we can share items we are having trouble putting outfits together with. Elaine (in this post) says it best, "You know, that thing you bought because you love it and you keep pulling it out and then putting it away without wearing it?"

Please share your J.Crew item (either that you own or are thinking about getting) that you would love help creating an outfit with.

Also, please help out by offering your styling advice. Feel free to include links to your blog (where you incorporated that piece) or to Polyvore (where you showcased an outfit with that piece). Thanks in advance! :)

  1. Is it ok to ask for advice to help me style something that's not from the Crew?

If so, here's a skirt I bought from the Limited after seeing it on one of the JCA's blog.

I got the sailor stripe print and it's definately more black than navy.

Second request, bought the Schooner Shorts in the blue stripe, I have a Chambray long sleeve that looks great with them, but I'm struggling for other options.

    Tks!

  2. I bought the Saturday sweater in Citron (the color looks great on me!) and would love suggestions on what to wear with it? Also, do others wear a cami underneath it?

    Thanks!

  3. I have the blue polka dot blouse in the picture below (looking to love post) and I can't figure out what the hell to wear with it. Tried the herringbone trousers (yellowish color) but it seemed so matchy-matchy. Tried grey pants but mine are too big and it looked like I was a kid playing dressup in my mom's clothes. Any advice for office-attire appropriate wear?

  4. I don't know if anyone else is still wearing wool pencil skirts but I have a post on styling the gray/periwinkle Sunnie skirt here.

Even though it is wool, I find the skirt to be a good transitional piece given the almost pastel colors. I've worn the Sunnie skirts quite a bit this winter, I have a real penchant for plaid and of course I have a serious addiction to J.Crew pencil skirts.

  5. I am having such a hard time finding a top to go under the gold-colored merino sequined crochet cardigan. Any ideas would be welcomed!

  6. Does anyone have advice styling a J. Crew denim jacket? Specifically a blue one like the Nolita. I'm having trouble making it look current and chic. :)

  8. Does anyone know anything about these two skirts shown in the spring lookbook? I can't find anything on the website and am not sure if they're in-store only, not available yet, or already come and gone and I missed them. Thanks!

  9. anything_but_full_price - Mixing the schooners with chambray sounds like a good idea! I ordered them as well and am inspired to style them. They make a great basic neutral.

Orange Shirt - A solid bright shirt would contrast well!

Simple Grey - These shorts can be worn very simply!

Pop of Pink- A rose with a blue tone would match great with these blue-grey shorts!

Neutrals - Or you could do the Jenna Lyons thing and mix high-lo glam.

    :)

  10. @lolita: I always like to pair my denim jacket (which is admittedly not J crew) with a floral sun dress (I have a few from Madewell that look cute with a jean jacket). Alternatively, I work in an office where business attire is what's worn, and I like to throw on a denim jacket over a pencil skirt and blouse for travel to and from work. Sort of dresses it down a little bit while I run errands after work or grab a drink with a friend.

  11. I love the idea of a denim jacket over work attire, and heels possibly. :) I'm thinking of doing the sundress idea with the cuffs rolled up, thanks teeny!

  12. Lolita, I just did a Google image search on "J Crew denim jacket" and all sorts of interesting things popped up. Not sure if you've done this already.

dawn, I found this old image of a medium grey skirt with a citron-ish blouse. I think it looks great. I also saw these old looks for Fall but they could work for Spring too depending on the exact garments. I like the citron-ish color with dark grey, and also with the pale pink and neutral.

  13. @Dawn, I'm another fan of citron with gray, both light/pearl gray and charcoal.

This spring/summer I'm also looking forward to replicating a color combo I saw in the Crewlet -- the outfit I saw was white denim + Crewlet version of the contrast-stitch perfect shirt + citron- or lime-colored Jackie tied at the waist. ... I have a lot of pieces in those 3 colors, including a bright lime green lightweight scarf, so that group of colors will be seen a lot around my home/office in coming weeks. :)

Also chiming in on the denim jacket query -- here in the South I bring mine everywhere pretty much all the time, save winter. I especially love the Nolita denim for warm weather because it's so lightweight. I have no qualms at all about throwing one on over a party dress even! It shows you don't take yourself too seriously. Provided, of course, that you don't. :)

I love that Saturday sweater and see myself wearing the hale out of it on weekends.

  14. Elaine, that sounds like a great combo and I think I need to incorporate some citron into my wardrobe!

Last weekend I bought a pair of chino shorts at the B&M, a dark chino color (similar to english saddle) with a neon orange tuxedo stripe on the side. They were on sale for $20 and I never saw them online so I think they may have been in-store only. Any ideas on what to pair with them? Navy is so far the only color I can think of.

  15. What have other JCAs been pairing with the orange paisley pencil skirt (besides white tops) . I have on;y worn it with a chambray top so far.....

  16. Thank you Lolita, I love the Schooner outfits you put together!!

  17. txmom- I haven't worn the orange paisley skirt yet, not warm enough, but it was styled in store with the gray and white striped boy shirt and I thought it was darling, bought the entire outfit.

  18. @Catrina I think your shorts and my electric orange maxi-check perfect shirt may be the same color combo. If so, I'd go with the following colors: ivory, taupe (subtle), bronzed clay, weathered wood (darker/richer), periwinkle blue, pale sage, dark cypress (contrast).

If the shorts are a warmer, caramel tone: ivory, marled fawn, English brown (subtle), smoldering brick, warm chocolate brown (darker/richer), berry/magenta, pale aqua (contrast).

Caveat: My my taste runs to darker/richer/jeweltones, but I tried to pick some more suble shades. And I don't wear navy, but agree it would work with the shorts.

  19. @Staci. My office is pretty casual so I've worn the polka dot shirt with really dark wash trouser jeans and either a bright coral, bright green or bright pink cardigan. On more casual days I've worn it with a slightly lighter wash straight leg jean, navy or cream cardigan and bright green belt. I also wear it with the bronzed ochre pencil skirt and grey tights. When the weather get warmer I'll likely wear it with khaki pants or skirt. I find the key is to throw something bright in somewhere. I love navy and pink, yellow or green. HTH

  20. anything_but_full_price - no problem! That skirt you just bought looks lovely too :)

  21. Txmom,
I paired the red paisley skirt with the lace tank and a light blue Jackie cardigan. Navy blue or even a muted version of cobalt would look fantastic as well. I think I have the look in a set on my polyvore, user name AllieFay.
