J.Crew Reviews {straight from the JCAs!}

This is the weekly "J.Crew Reviews {straight from the JCAs}" post, to help each other share our reviews.

So if you have recently purchased, or stopped by a J.Crew store to try on an item (or two) from J.Crew, maybe you might be willing to share that information with us in this post.

Also, this request is not just limited to clothes. Please feel free to discuss bags, shoes, jewelry, accessories, etc.

In particular, if you could mention a few of the noteworthy details like fit, size, fabric, and the like— that would be fantastic! Thanks in advance! :)

  1. I posted some pics of some sale items that have been around a while, just in case you're thinking about them: bonfire cardi, armory pouchette, lighthouse cardi, etc.:

  5. Bought the sequin placket boy shirt, which is a cute top but a pretty boxy fit. Material is very fine, so something has to be worn underneath or else it's completely see through. The collar is flimsy and doesn't hold its shape very well. Size down - I'm usually a 2 but definitely could have gone to a zero on this one. Overall, it's a cute shirt and adds some fun to a plain, collared shirt with the sequins (which are quite muted and definitely work appropriate).

Vintage cotton sunburst tank: I really like the fit of this shirt, I think that the J Crew picture is an accurate depiction. However, when I received the item I pulled the price tag off of it and it ripped the J Crew shirt tag off and made a small hole. Which was pretty frustrating given that I hadn't worn it yet. Bah! Shoddy stitching.

  6. Review of the Roulette Clutch in bright yellow/sandalwood here. It has popped back on occasion so hope that helps anyone watching for it.

  7. Does anyone have a review of the Calais silk tunic to share?

  8. Gingham scouts: I think they are ever so slightly better fitting this year or the softer fabric is a better match to the cut--love them--took my regular size.

Sundrenched sweatshirt: I got the white--great fabric but size down the thing is huge.

men's staunton pant--I love men's pants and buy them large to wear slouchy. These I had to get smaller than the men's "broken-in chino" as they are even baggier but the lighter weight makes them nice for summer.

  9. I'd stalked the Saturday sweaters online for some time and found two in-store the other day -- glad to know my instincts are still right on! I love them. They're an unusual blend of wool and linen, and they have a beautiful drape. I sized down to a Small b/c they have a relaxed fit; YMMV.

Also picked up the Bonfire cardi last week (pre-extra30, grrr) and I mentioned it briefly this weekend. The heft of it surprised me. People seem to wear it belted, but I can't imagine getting a belt over this bulk, and I wear size Large belts! That said, I do love it and have worn in 3x in the past 5 days, each time in lieu of a jacket.

I could see this swallowing up very tiny peeps, though.

I also have a slight rant about my so-called popback score of the pearl and crystal Symphony necklace. My guess is someone returned it because on one side of it, the pearl stand has un-twisted from the rest. Booo. I can still wear it and probably no one will ever notice, but it bugs me.

Still looking for the pastiche necklace ... hint hint! Who's got one that's slowly dying from underexposure? :D

  10. Anyone try the Waverly chinos and the Safari Shirtdress. I'm wondering about the sizing.

  11. I just picked up the Cotton Stud Cardigan (39473) at my B&M. It is $79.99 online and I just picked it up for $19.99. This is why I have a hard time buying online!

Go get it! It's 100% cotton-I LOVE when they do that-and the studs are so cute.

Also, I am on the hunt for classic ballet flats in a 7 and I can't pay full price. Let me know if anyone is selling theirs :)

  12. I think the Waverlys are generously sized, but they look really nice slouchy. So, you could size down, but the way they drape, the loose fit is still flattering.

  13. Maryeb: I reviewed the Safari Shirtdress: http://danibp.blogspot.com/2011/03/work-wear.html
I found it to be true to size, I took my usual J Crew dress size.
I think it' a great piece!

  14. How embarrassing. I just toodled over to my B&M to grab the gray Bonfire cardi. Skipped off to the register only to find the stores are not honoring 30% off sale prices. PFFFFFFFFFFFT. I left. But jeez. WTF?

  15. Hi, all: I did two reviews today...knotted mesh necklace in antique gold and the sundrenched sweatshirt in electric orange.

  16. Thanks for the info.
I didn't realize there are 2 Safari shirtdresses currently on-line.
I was looking at the sleeveless one in the new arrivals. It's $128.

  17. Is it possible to order stuff on the phone for the sale price and not from the website? Talking about the studded cardi

  18. My Ice Drop necklace in black diamond just arrived. It's so pretty! I love it. It's sparkling and elegant. Length and color are just perfect! It's on sale now for $49. I ordered it last week but J Crew was nice enough to give me the 30% when I called yesterday.

  19. Maryeb: Oh sorry! I thought you were referring to the one in the sale section.
The sleeveless one is quite sharp, very tailored. Haven't tried it though. I'm curious about it too.

  20. Courtney: Thanks for the tip about the cotton studded cardi. I swung by my local B&M after doing some errands and they had the heather flannel (grey) and dark beechwod (a very pretty taupe/pink) for $19.99. Even the SA who was helping me couldn't believe it. It's nice and thick and the studs are so cute...love the painted metal buttons that fasten the sweater too...

It was so refreshing interacting with the SA...she was ringing up the sweater and I mentioned even though I was tempted to get the camp pocket cardigan (#35750) for $19.99, since it didn't catch my eye before the sale, I wasn't going to buy. She shared that she felt the same way about clothing...but sometimes a sale would push her over the edge. She had been prepared to return an item (she didn't say if it was JC or not ;)) but when it rang up cheaper she did a return/rebuy. So see? We're not the only ones!

  22. Jacob: I believe JCrew treats the stores and their online site as two separate entities. Since many of us have seen the studded cardi for $19.99 you could try calling customer service and asking if they would honor the price.

Typically though, in order for JCrew's phone reps to honor an in-store price, you would have to call from a red phone in a store, possibly with the help of an SA. Of course, at that point, you may be able to have the sweater in hand!

ETA: If you did call customer service, my guess is that the phone SA would tell you they could only offer the online discount of $79.99, less 30%

  23. No problem, DaniBP. That other shirtdress looked really nice on you and it's on sale. I just may bite. Thanks for bringing it to my attention.

  24. Indigo-stripe Boatneck sailor tee.
    item 36217

Does anyone own this? I think it's so cute and spot on with the "nautical" theme of today but it has been in stock in every size for forever!

    Would love ANY reviews!
    TIA!

  25. Fashion Dork (the blog) has a picture of her wearing it. I think it is super cute as well-and the blogger is super cute ;>. No idea about how to size it though. Look for link on right side of JCA page. HTH!

  27. Has anyone seen any of the silk taffeta dresses in the fawn color IRL? Trying to figure out if the color would wash out someone with pale skin and dark hair... TIA!

  28. I forgot that I posted an IRL pic of the Provence dress on my blog last week. Click here. :)

  29. @OperaRach

I have the Indigo Boatneck Striped Sailor Tee. Its a great staple, sturdy cotton and runs TTS.

  30. @ Lauren and Pathos

Thank you so much for the info on the indigo boatneck sailor tee. Lauren - do you find the fit super boxy or is it slightly fitted? I'm thinking with going for the XXS for a slightly more fitted look.

    Thanks again! so helpful!

  31. I finally received the Sun-drenched sweatshirt after being on waitlist, and have to say I'm not that impressed by it. Perhaps because I was expecting something really soft but just don't find that to be the case on this one. As for sizing, I ordered both the XSmall and Small after reading reviews that it was running large. Not sure if it's just the ones I got, but there isn't that much of a difference between the fit of the two, IMO. I do think the blue color is very pretty, but I'm sending them back because they just aren't a full-price purchase for me.

  32. I have a question for the JCAs that I am in desperate need of help on:

I am a law student and I would like to get a really nice suit - J. crew seemed to fit me the best of the tens that I tried on. I have a Super 120s dress in black that I love and would like to build on. If I were to buy a black Super 120s blazer and shirt, if I have not dry cleaned the dress yet will it match?

Second, does J. Crew ever have sales on suiting? I really do not want to spend this much on the skirt, jacket and pants FP!

    Thanks all for your help!

  33. @Kathleen: wise move of you to invest in some classic pieces. When did you get your 120 dress? If recently, then there's a good chance that the dye lot will match with the new pieces you're thinking of getting, but don't bank on it, as the dress you got may have been manufactured months and months ago. Make sure you buy the blazer and skirt at the same time (or as close in time as possible) to minimize the chance that the pieces are cut from fabric from 2 dye lots. I have seen the suiting pieces go on promo, you can book mark the items you want and check back regularly yourself, or use "Shop it to me" or some such similar site to help you monitor pricing. And remember to check here for promos and free ship codes. HTH!

  34. Does anyone have a review of Madewell's...

    Changing Channels Scarf
    Silk Streetcar Romper
    Everyday knit leggings?

Would like to bite, but not sure on sizing/quality. :) TIA

  35. OperaRach: The Indigo-stripe Boatneck sailor tee is not boxy. It is perhaps less fitted than the perfect-fit tees, but it is still fitted. I just got the XS myself, which is my normal size. XXS would not have worked because the shoulders/arms would be too tight for me. This is a great top!

  36. My love affair with J Crew shoes continues. The tawny orange leather Collins arrived today and they're awesome. The fact that I got them for only $92 with that last 30% off promo makes it even better. They look totally fresh, not returns. The color is very clay-like, very similar but a little more intense than the provence pink Jenna cardi which also arrived today. Just as it is with my mink leather Collins, the top strap crossing over my foot is snug, but not uncomfortable.

The Jenna cardigan is very cute. I sized up and it's good that I did because it appears to run a bit small. The provence pink is like a clay color, not as pink as I expected but very pretty. I.m thinking about buying another before they're all gone.
