J.Crew Email: Jenna's Picks For Feb New Arrivals

J.Crew sent an email showcasing Jenna Lyons and Gayle's (women's stylist at J.Crew), picks of what they are "loving this month". Click here to view all the items they selected, including the following:

This season we're loving boyfriend styling- a tomboy touch that's still utterly feminine. Gayle (our women's stylist) is taking classic pieces and adding in unexpected twists of color, detail and softness for a less predictable, more modern look. It's a new way to do chic and it's all in how you wear it.
  1. Solid Silk Garland Cami (Item 11527; $88) - A sweet little confection, perfect with rumpled boyfriend chinos and heels.
  2. Spectator Belinda Heels (Item 12340; $225) - The mix of shimmering linen and neon makes this our go-to shoe.
  3. Pearl Necklaces (starting at $55) - More pearls, please: pile them on and twist for a clustered effect.
  4. Cotton-Linen Seaside Shorts (Item 13052; $49.50) - Our favorite alternative to a skirt. Wear with a pretty top, strappy heels and top it off with a blazer and loads of pearls.
  5. Essie Nail Polish In "Mini Shorts"
  6. Molten Metallic Tank (Item 13616; $62) - Layer in a cute metallic tank for a bit of shimmer.
    Tissue Painted-Strip Tank (Item 12671; $32.50)
  7. Broken-In Boyfriend Chino (Item 12953; $69.50) - Perfectly slouchy - never sloppy (there's a difference).
  8. Large Metallic-Leather Gallery Hobo (Item 13334; $325) - The gallery bag: we're wearing it messenger-style for a tomboy look.
  9. Jack Purcell Distressed Sneakers (Item 85554; $65) - The classic makes a comeback and still looks fresh (even with a suit).
  10. Cluster Ring (Item 14674; $65) - The season's statement piece- (day or night).
What are your thoughts on the items selected? Which items would have made your top picks of new arrivals that you are loving this month?

  1. I didn't like Jenna's picks this month. I would have selected the Saturday Pant instead of the Boyfriend chino, and maybe the Cocktail Capri pants. I guess I am biased because I like this items and have ordered the Saturday pants.

    ReplyDelete
  2. I feel sometimes, that "statement piece has become a euphemism for tacky and garish. That ring looks like it came from a gumball machine.

    ReplyDelete
  3. OT-

Did the website ever update yesterday? I haven't seen one yet today and wasn't home yesterday.

    ReplyDelete
  4. Yes--not liking the "rumpled" aesthetic of the boyfriend chinos--looks like you dug them out from the bottom of your dirty clothes hamper.

Also, Ellen DeGeneres called and wants her sneakers w/ suit look back...

  5. That picture of Lauren Hutton, also used on the website front these days, makes me think she's holding a swaddled baby every time.

Don't like any of the picks. Not a one. And I agree with anon 2:03 on the ring.

    ReplyDelete
  6. There is that hideous tacky ring again. Nice try J.Crew but we aren't buying it.

And those shoes - shiny linen with neon. While they do look "kind of" cute, they are garish and will be dated in no time. I've seen similar from Joe Fresh for $14.99. Worth that price for something so trendy.

    Another huge bag. Yawn.

Sneakers - isn't that something we all have already?

The nail polish makes me wonder if J.Crew is considering a makeup line. If their cheap jewelry is any indication, I wouldn't go near their lead-based paint, I mean makeup, from cheap factories in China.

The only thing I like is the cami and I've heard the petals start to fray as quickly as the sweaters started to pill.

  7. I went into my J.Crew this weekend to find a birthday present for my sister. I thought I couldn't go wrong with some jewelry, so I tried on a bunch of necklaces and bracelets to see what she might like. I noticed the cluster ring, thought it looked interesting, and tried it on. The picture on the website makes it look like it is huge, but irl, it's actually very compact, and while striking, is not at all ostentatious. Needless, to say, I ended up buying one for my sister, and one for me! This is a big deal for me, because I never wear any rings but my wedding band and engagement ring. I'd never fallen in love with a ring like that before!

  8. It seems like they pick the least appealing items to be "Jenna's Picks", so they'll actually sell. The items that are actually kinda cool (Cocktail Capris, etc.) don't need to be promoted this way. I don't think anyone will be paying more than $9.99 for that tissue-weight striped tank. Sorry JCrew! I still love you! :)

    ReplyDelete
  9. There is no way I would ever pay $62 for a tank top!

    ReplyDelete
  10. I wore that shade of Essie nail polish all of last summer. I think it came out sometime in July. I loved how bright and unexpected it was, especially on my toes. I am just waiting for spring to arrive so that I can break it out again!

    ReplyDelete
  11. Well, I hate to be neg but I'm not in love with the picks either. I do LOVE the purse but I really wish is was smaller. I also love the flowered cami but not how it buttons, and I would never wear these tennis shoes.

I also do not like dressing like a boy and I can assure you my husband doesn't like it on me While I love the comfort of chinos, and use to wear them when I worked, they do NOTHING for my figure. However, the cafe capri or somthing more form fitted would have been great. Just my opinion. Many of you will look very cute I'm sure just not for me.

  13. I would love the cotton linen seaside shorts... love the fabric, colors and the tie looks so cute in a bow.
BUT they're 5 inches! I know that's a nice length for most people, but i'm only 22, and wearing 5 inches makes me look more matronly... not a bad thing, but since I'm not a mother yet, I don't need to look like one! It would be nice if they made a shorter version in something like this! Even 4 inches would look so much better. and the 3 inch isn't up my behind, either, it just looks more age appropriate for me.

    ReplyDelete
  14. It does sort of appear that Jenna's picks tend to avoid things that are too tasteful, or that will have wide appeal. To me some of the best items are the Saturday pants, the Cocktail capris, and the nice assortment of freshwater and glass pearl jewelry. But again, I think they use this as a way to promote stuff with marginal appeal. I've seen this done in design magazines, where hideously ugly, garish rooms are hailed as genius, and often people without a strong sense of themselves and their style fall for it.

    ReplyDelete
  15. anon @ 2:47: This is the first I've heard of the petals fraying...can you offer any more info? TIA. I just bought one of the camis last weekend and haven't worn it yet. I will take it back if it's just going to fray!

    ReplyDelete
  16. I find it annoying that Jenna/jcrew think they are starting new fashion trends buy pointing out classic styles... "the return of the jean jacket" (i think that line was in january's catalog? uhhmmm, where did it ever go??)... pegged jeans (more fleeting but still) ... the girly tomboy aesthetic... nautical themes... a cardigan as a layering piece... sneakers with dress pants... etc., etc. these styles have been around for quite a while. i've been wearing dress pants with my pumas for years, especially when I used to walk to work! :)

    ReplyDelete
  17. Oh, on a positive note...I was at my B&M and saw a necklace similar to the Dainty beaded layering necklace item 14507, $38 that is not on the website. It looks just like the DBLN and was also $38 but the beads are not a circle bead they are an octagon shape. I purchased the warm blush color and am REALLY happy with it. I also thought the price at $38 wasn't too bad. I plan on wearing it with my pinks and roses this spring. Today I am actually wearing it with my desert brown merino turtleneck and it looks great!

    ReplyDelete
  18. I love the tennis shoes, the boyfriend chinos, and the garland cami. All very me.

I think the ring is awful--small or large in size; doesn't matter.

As far a shorts go, when did 5 inches become matronly or "old". LOL Ummm...3 inches is trashy no matter what your age 15 or 25. 5 inches is pretty daring for most people regardless of age.

    ReplyDelete
  19. I have to agree with anon re: 5" shorts vs 3"-- I'm 26 and I've never worn 3" shorts, ever. I'm just not comfortable with how short they are, especially when you sit down! 5" is not like bermuda shorts, still plenty (but tasteful) of exposed thigh. :)

    ReplyDelete
  20. While all these items are nice, they're not really new anymore. Come on J. Crew, more spring clothes, please (and please try to perk up your gray homepage. It's gray enough outside.).

    ReplyDelete
  21. re: 5" shorts. It's called having a little class, not being matronly. Especially shorts with linen in the fabric, they will wrinkle and thus ride up a bit. 3" inseam would pretty much be nothing after sitting for 20 minutes on a summer day.

If you really feel the need to expose more of yourself, you could always roll them up.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Just a thought - if people are interested enough in J. Crew, don't you think they are already signed up for the email and getting these alerts?

Sorry - I like your blog but am a bit tired of reading/seeing the same stuff that is in my email in box. Keep the content original!

    ReplyDelete
  23. I wouldn't buy or wear any of those items, honestly. They're either too gaudy, trendy, or overpriced for me.

By the way, JC, it would have been nice to send out an email that was different than the landing page for the women's section of your website.

    ReplyDelete
  24. To Anon @ 3:05 - I don't find 5 inch shorts matronly at all. Maybe it's because I'm six feet tall and five inch shorts on me look like 3 inches on everyone else.

Personally, I think 3 inch shorts, if you're going to wear them with a nice top that bares shoulders or cleavage, and heels, would look too short. But then again, I think it is too much to bare legs, back, cleavage, and arms all at once. Why not leave something to the imagination?

    ReplyDelete
  25. anon 3:29: Are you having a bad day? Your comments are a little harsh to say the least, if you don't like a topic just skip over it.

    ReplyDelete
  26. 5" shorts matronly? I do not agree, I believe Stacy and Clinton said 3" shorts were for teenagers.

    ReplyDelete
  27. I love the Solid Silk Garland Cami (reminds me of the lovely Elizabeth) and i already have it in my cart in both the shell colour and the mint-y colour... now if i acctually pull the trigger will be a whole other issue.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Should I buy these shorts at 29 then?

    ReplyDelete
  29. Sorry it was the Jacquard treasure jubilee short. Item 12369.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Just noticed this new item Chiffon cascade jersey. Item 14150. Does it look like a chiffon napkin on your chest? The creative team is so obssessed with chiffon that they are placing them anywhere and in any way, not necessarily in a good way that they could think of.

I don't always get every email that J Crew sends out so I appreciate that Alexis tries to keep everyone informed about the latest emails from J Crew. There have been quite a few times that I have logged on to this blog and Alexis has posted about a discount from an email the she or another JCA received and had it not been for Alexis, I would have missed out on the discount.

Please keep your snarky comments to yourself.

    ReplyDelete
  32. I don't know that "matronly" automatically equates to being a mother - I know plenty of mothers out there who dress WAY more hip than I do. I also know plenty of mothers who seem to have given up on fashion all together...really depends on the person.

I don't have particularly nice legs (not trying to be down on myself, I just know where my assets are, and my legs they are not...) So I try to keep them covered best I can and rarely if ever wear shorts. I didn't wear short shorts in my early 20's, and now that I'm 30 I can't imagine it's a trend I'll be trying out now. But regardless of your age, if you can pull it off, I say more power to you! I would love to be able to wear the cute 3" shorts, but on me they would just accent things that are better left hidden.

    So, um yeah...my 2¢ - for whatever it's worth. :)

    ReplyDelete
  33. anon @ 3:53,

for me, they're too short, unless I was wearing opaque tights underneath. I spoke too soon before-- I *do* have 1 pair of 3" shorts, from BR, bought several years ago. they're plaid and I only wear them with opaque tights underneath, so I don't feel as exposed. I love mini skirts and know my legs are still on the better side of normal, but I just don't feel comfy with 3" inseam shorts.

if you are comfy with your legs, then go for it. I'm just really not sure where 3" shorts are appropriate other than lounging around the house or at the beach, or a casual cookout. As long as it doesn't say pink or juicy across the butt, it's more or less ok, I guess. ;)

    ReplyDelete
  34. Oh thank you Jcrew - I needed a laugh today. Everytime I picture myself wearing a suit and sneakers I chuckle to myself just a bit.....hehehe

    ReplyDelete
  35. No 3 inch shorts for me, unless I morph into a supermodel overnight. It has nothing to do with age or being a mother (or matronly).

    ReplyDelete
  36. Thanks, Heather for the insights! You woke me up by pointing out 3" shorts are hardly appropriate other than lounging around the house or at the beach! I had a pair of shorts that I wore whenever I could last summer with conservative tops like boatneck or crewneck so not to look too exposed or trashy and you are right, I limited its appearance to the beach and grocery store. Sigh... I too love miniskirt and am not afraid of it.

I somehow feel less exposed in a miniskirt than a 3" shorts. Anyone feel the same?

    ReplyDelete
  37. I love how the people on the blog attack an item instead of just saying they do not like it. Also, if you think about it, wouldn't the Creative Director/designer, who lives and works in NYC probably like slightly more stylized items than the average consumer? Just something for all you constant Jenna bashers to think about. I am from Ohio and do not like all the picks, but I also appreciate that I am not the most stylish person out there.

    ReplyDelete
  38. I kindly disagree with most of the views regarding 3" shorts. When you're 5'2" and have an inseam of only 29", you'll do anything you can to make your legs look longer. That includes 3" shorts. 5" shorts make me look like a camp counselor in a really bad way.

That being said, I always believe that if you show one bodypart off you should cover up another, so I typically pair my shorts with long sleeved cotton tees (like the J. Crew favorite tee) and a nice pearl necklace. That's one of my favorite outfits for the summer!

    ReplyDelete
  39. To Anonymous at 3:29 PM: I actually like that Alexis posts and discusses the emails. I'm on a shopping ban and no longer receive the emails from J. Crew (I unsubscribed) but I occasionally still like to see them and what others think of them.

    ReplyDelete
  40. As a native New Yorker, I have to admit we have a pretty messed up style. Daring and creative do not equal tasteful.

    ReplyDelete
  41. ^ Amen to that.

    Signed

    5'1"

    ReplyDelete
  42. I saw a women wearing 3" shorts doing her laundry in my apartment building today. She is slim, I was walking behind her and to say the least she left very little to the imagination, kinda slutty look.

    ReplyDelete
  43. I'd love the shoes if they weren't Clown Orange. The plainer version has no appeal, either. Too bad, as I like the style alot.
The rest of it is a "pass". Oh well.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Can I just say that Lauren Hutton looks seriously old & busted? Homegirl makes me want to put on extra sunscreen!

    ReplyDelete
  45. I'm 5'1", and you won't catch me in 3" or booty shorts just to make my legs look longer. I'll stick with my 5"-ers and heels, if I want to show more leg I'll cuff them (and wear tights underneath, of course!). jcrew 5" shorts are not camp counselor-esque, you'd have to wear some pleated coulottes, jorts, or bermuda shorts for that look. :D

    to each her own :)

    ReplyDelete
  46. i love the diverse and honest opinions on here. How boring the blog would become if all there are "i love this cami", "i cannot wait to receive it" or "i need it in my life now".

    ReplyDelete
  47. I like the hobo but wish it's smaller. The cami is pretty but the buttons make it less refined. Much prefer my Victoria camis.

    ReplyDelete
  48. I love the bag, but so wish it were smaller (or that the gold came in the smaller version). And I have to concur with Anon at 2:30, every time I see the pic of Lauren Hutton hugging the bag, I think she's holding a baby or something. And I'm not sure I "get" the stylists idea of wearing that bag like a messenger bag across your body...seems a little to big for that.

    ReplyDelete
  49. The buttons on the cami - look like pyjamas!

The hobo is too big for a messenger bag. With such a size, it's too unstructured to look good. Love the color/texture though!

    ReplyDelete
  50. Anon at 3:29 PM: I hear what you are saying. :) As ♥ Chloe, Emily, and others have {correctly} mentioned, the reason why I post these emails is that several members have mentioned that they do *not* receive these emails, no matter how many times (and different) ways they contact J.Crew and ask them. ;) At least this way they can see these emails.

Also, please feel free to skip posts you are not interested in. :)

♥ Chloe, Emily, and others- thank you for explaining the reason behind these posts. Sometimes I am late in responding and so I appreciate your help! :)

    ReplyDelete
  51. I would imagine if you tucked in the garland cami that the buttons would create odd bunching/pulling/gaping, etc. I agree that the buttons sort of looks like a nightshirt!

    ReplyDelete
  52. I don't think what I wrote conveyed exactly what I was meaning. I don't mean matronly as a bad thing, and there are plenty of hot moms who don't look matronly either. I think what Chloe said fits it better. On me they just look like camp counselor. I also did mention that 5 inch looks good on some people, but they certainly don't look good on me AT ALL.
So why I can accept that there are plenty of girls who look classy and great in 5 inch shorts, don't tell us who need the 3 inch that we're trashy.
    Thanks.

I just wish JCrew would make some nicer shorts in the 3 inch variety. (Not just in the prints, etc)

Lastly, I just was commenting that I loved one of Jenna's picks, but sadly it won't work for me!

    ReplyDelete
  53. I'm glad Alexis posts everything, b/c many times I don't get the emails from J.Crew till nighttime (or at all), when I will have missed out on the best finds w a new coupon, etc. It's really helpful.

    Thanks, Alexis!

    ReplyDelete
  54. OT a little bit, but what are the feelings about 11650 the organza pencil skirt? I loved this skirt until I saw that it had an elastic waistband! What were they thinking?
I personally don't like it, but I'd like to hear everyone's views.
I would have bought it full price if not for that elastic waistband.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Please, what are 'jorts'? Anything like 'skorts' (skirt + shorts)?

It seems like Jenna's picks would be more effective if they were sassier. The orange shoes, the cami and ring are interesting. But why bother putting the other stuff in front of us again. If I want wrinkled chinos, a faded thin tank top and plain shorts, I will just go to Old Navy. Not think, Oh, Jenna liked these, so I should pay 5x their value and head to jcrew! And what is with that handbag? It looks like I could carry my toddler in there.

I just wish these emails would showcase items worth showing.

    ReplyDelete
  56. oly,

jorts are jean shorts. hehe. :B

    ReplyDelete
  57. Oly,

"Jorts" are jean shorts... which interestingly enough JCrew has rolled out this spring! Which brings up yet another "what were they thinking"?
And to add fuel to the fire, they're three inches! Hahaha.

    ReplyDelete
  58. OT: Does anyone have the cashmere swing sweater?? Does it fit TTS or run big? How loose is it in the waist? TIA!

    ReplyDelete
  59. Anon 4:58 and Chloe --
I totally concur re: shorts length. While not everyone can wear 3" shorts, I have no problem with anyone who chooses to do so tastefully (e.g., without overexposure elsewhere). Living in the South, being 5'1" with short but well-toned legs, I prefer my shorts at that length as well, and I don't think it looks tacky at all. I too, look too "camp counselor" in anything longer than 4".

Ladies, just because you don't personally choose to wear a certain look, please don't get snarky with others who have different preferences from yours. We don't all have to agree, but we can all be gracious!

    ReplyDelete
  60. I like the Annie cami. The miu miu k/o are kind of cute.

    ReplyDelete
  61. I think it's kind of funny how so many people here are disappointed in the color scheme they got going on now. That it's too bland and pale and boring.

I happened upon a January JC catalog from a year ago and yikes, that stuff was horrendous! Seriously, just one outfit appealed to me but the rest was so bright and obnoxious. To me this seasons colors are way more sophisticated and less circus tent than last year's. So I say bring on the blahs, I love them!

    ReplyDelete
  62. OT: I received my ulta flyer today and noticed that the model on the front cover appears to be wearing the cerise Victoria silk blouse (you can also see it on ulta.com). I have that color Victoria blouse and love it. Great year round piece. Someone earlier asked what colors to pair it with. I wore it with white jeans and capri sandals while on vacation. It also goes well with my ivory cafe capri pants or cords and ivory/snow colored cardi. It looks great with brown and grey for fall and with navy year round (cotton or wool navy pants). I've also paired it with my ivory serge skirt and pumps (black, brown or nude all looked great). Also great with the bright fuschia cashmere cardigan (reminds me of the color combo of the Martine cashmere cardigan sweater from last spring). Of couse, it also looks great with jeans, too!

    ReplyDelete
  63. anon 5:59: When I made the comments about the "slutty look" it was not meant for all people who wear 3" shorts. On that particular person it looked terrible, it was in bad taste. If someone can pull it off and look great in them thats terrific.

We all know some people who wear things that they should not for whatever reason and they don't look good in it bordering distasteful. Boobs hanging out, butt hanging out of shorts for example.

    ReplyDelete
  64. The person who made the matronly comment about the 5" shorts should have more respect for others too.

    ReplyDelete
  65. I agree - I never get the e-mails so I appreciate that Alexis posts what they send out - especially if it relates to a deal.

Love what anon @ 2:03 said - that ring looks like it came out of a Cracker Jack box; New York chic it is not.

Where are all of the pretty Spring skirts? I hope it's not all going to be tomboy-ish this year, although I would like a pair of those Jack Purcell sneakers.

    ReplyDelete
  66. The only thing I like is the cami ~ its really pretty IRL, but, its very similar to the Lydia and other camis, IMO, so, I won't buy it at full price. I think if you've got the build and legs for 3" shorts, I couldn't care less who wears em; but, I wouldn't wear them outside of the house, just bec. I'd feel self-conscious. I agree about the BF chinos, they just look rumply and don't think they flatter, unless you have no hips at all.

    ReplyDelete
  67. The problems with this seasons colors is there they are sombre depressing looking. It would be nice to have the choice of color to brighten an outfit up to create a cherrier mood. There is too much pewter, ivory. I am hoping summer brings a better color palette.

    ReplyDelete
  68. So 2 things:
    1. The sale section on the website has not updated sine Saturday????

    2. I went to an outlet store today-they had BEAUTIFUL flower hair ties...an elastic band attached to the flower-I bought several and plan to snip off the elastic band and put a pin on the back to use on clothing-any ideas where I can find the pins? Michaels? You should check it out!!

    ReplyDelete
  69. Anon @ 3:29 - I think it is understood that most of us get the emails, the blog is intended for discussion and to allow us to say what we think of the emails, or the topic in general. Some people don't get the emails either, so this is news to them.

As usual, the topic starts out discussing the original post and often branches out to other things. I get every J.Crew email and ever catalog yet I still love to read what others think and join the discussion on this blog.

I hope you enjoy the blog and discussions as well and I welcome your comments. All opinions, even dissenting ones are welcome, with the exceptions noted above the comment box.

  71. Question for the JCAs who have resold items (I'm new to this): How much do you figure in for shipping?

I just received my super 120s Blair dress from the 30% off final sale, and sadly the fit is all wrong. The "waist" seam hits at my bra band, the more generous hip area hits at my waist, and it's really tight around my hips. If I wondered whether I have a long torso, here's my answer!

The dress is still for sale, but I can sell it for less since I got 30% off. I will post in the next weekly exchange post...just wondering if you can give me some advice on how much to figure for shipping! Thanks!

  72. I love this blog. I'm on a self-imposed shopping ban right now and reading this blog lets me shop vicariously through others!
Bring on the varied opinions and great ideas on how to wear some of my fav jcrew pieces.

    ReplyDelete
  73. I love Jenna Lyons style generally, but I'm not lovin' most of the picks this month, except for maybe the gallery bag.

I prefer their icon trench and their silk tunics from the February arrivals.

    ReplyDelete
  74. I like the new ring and can't wait to see it IRL. I love rings in general, and don't mind one or two large statement rings, although if this is smaller than their normal rings, that will be even better. As for the rest of her picks, they're a no for me. The garland cami is pretty, but how many of these types of tops do I need? :) I agree with others that the Saturday pant should have been included, but others are probably right in guessing that it will sell well without the help from Jenna.

    ReplyDelete
  75. I am 5'7", and I frequently wear 3" and 4" shorts in the summer. I don't feel like the length on me is inappropriate or "slutty," as some posters are implying. Anything longer makes me look short and a bit stocky.

Besides, my legs are my best asset, thanks to the marathons that I run. I feel like I can show them off a bit. (If I were bigger, I would probably stick with the 5"+ shorts.)

    ReplyDelete
  76. Has anyone tried the silk tunics? Are they TTS? I love silk crepe de chine and want to get at least a couple of these gorgeous tunics but I can't get to the B&M to try them on. Any help would be appreciated.

    TIA

    ReplyDelete
  77. I'm 5'3" and I have shorts in both 5" and 3" I like them both for different occasions, but I have to say the 3" are my favorite. The 5"ers hit me mid thigh and make me look a little stumpy. But, there are definitely events when I like to be a little more conservative so I bust out the 5" :)

    ReplyDelete
  78. hmmm. i see a lot of debate between the "sluttiness" vs. the "matronliness" of the 3- and 5-inch shorts. I think people can definitely pull off shorter shorts if worn tastefully. I know that when I was in college just a few years ago, the campus abound with girls running around in tiny shorts, and no one thought anything of it. It may be less appropriate at some times, like maybe a family function? or colder weather? but I think that like a lot of things, they can be worn tastefully. Like a lot of clothes, it may just take a particular body type to wear them...

    ReplyDelete
  79. Just to chime in on the whole 3" short debate, I wear them as I am only 5 feet and my legs are very slim. I don't think longer shorts are matronly at all, but I appreciate J. Crew offering 3" ones.

  80. The Cluster Ring - I agreed with many of you who felt the ring was not that great... probably too big and gaudy. I agreed until tonight when I saw an SA wearing it at B&M. I loved loved loved it. It looked soooo nice on her, not big at all. She looked totally classy wearing it, not over the top. Give the cluster ring a chance!

  81. I like the Pearls, the Gallery Hobo, and the Boyfriend Chinos. I actually tried on the Boyfriend Chinos at my B&M on Saturday and they are now on my wishlist. :)

  82. Annette: I'm sorry to hear the Blair didn't work for you... although I've heard of others having fit issues with this dress!

When I sell on the weekly exchange I base the shipping on how much the item weighs... of course, I have a postage scale. That dress, in a padded envelope or a priority envelope is probably around a pound so figuring $5 or $6 for shipping should cover you if you send Priority. I hope that answers your question!

What's wrong with 3" shorts? I am 5'10", and I wear them all the time, and I'm pretty confident they don't look slutty. Of course I don't really have a butt so there's not much to hang out of my shorts... I totally agree with Chloe though when she said that when you show off 1 body part you look much better if you keep the rest relatively covered. And you should never wear something if it is completely unflattering just because it is cute, trendy, etc... wear what looks good on you! Which will be different for everyone.

  83. Here's my opinion on the 3" shorts, 5" shorts, mini skirts, etc.

I think stylish women have room for many different looks and styles in their wardrobe. Sometimes it's great to wear short-shorts, or 3" shorts, or 5" shorts. Sometimes you may want to hit the golf course and wear bermudas, or travel to a country wear linen pants are de rigeur because shorts would get you arrested or at least considered scandalous.

Same goes with skirts. Sometimes you can rock a mini, other times a longer skirt is more apropos. It all comes down to what looks good on you and what fits the situation or event.

Keeping your options open is savvy and knowing what works for you is just smart.

As I always say, it's great that we don't all like the same thing. Otherwise it would be sold out in my size. ;)

  84. Hi Alexis! I was wondering....Could you do a 'What's on your wishlish?' post for the new spring line? I'd love to know what everybody wants now.....just in case I dawdle and something sells out. TIA!

  85. as to the color palette that j crew has been using -- i stood in 2 B&M's this week and looked across the store at all the clothes -- it's very hard to find any colors on the "cool" side of the color wheel. lots of shades of pink, orange, coral, yellow, gold (all in tones a bit less loud than last year) plus some greys and beiges, blacks, browns. almost no blues except some aqua that moved over toward green. plus that mint green which isn't, in my opinion, flattering on many people.

i hope j crew notices that lots of us think there's been overkill on pink/orange/yellow side. take a look at the sale part of their website, which shows available colors on the sale items. at this late date in the winter sale, it's overloaded with items in those colors. they made too much in too many of those shades (try 10 or 12 shades of orange/yellow). i love pink and coral -- but the company's clothing has been disproportionately made in those pink/orange/yellow tones. even a pink-lover can reach a "TILT" point. many of us are there -- and the web site's sale section shows that...

i understand that the palette changes each season, and the colors need to be integrated -- but a few more cool colors would be a welcome, refreshing addition.

  86. If you can wear 3" shorts... more power to you!

And I don't like any of these picks either, much like everyone else's comments.

  87. Anon at 9:38 PM: That is a great post suggestion! I will definitely use it for a future post. :)

As for the shorts debate (which is an interesting one!)... I think it all depends on the person and how she wears the shorts. I love the show "What Not to Wear" since I see how items that look great on a hanger or look fabulous on one person, doesn't always work for someone else. :)

  88. Upon further review, I love the Garland cami lol... I'm a sucker for interesting details at the neckline

  89. Anon 9:39 - if the pink has blue rather than red undertones, it is a cool hue and there have been some in past seasons - dark peony, fuschia and others. Unfortunately, that isn't the case with J.Crew this season. Dusty rose, tea rose, guava, etc. All warm pinks. I'm with you on the need for cool colors.

I bought the Ava dress, which is a cool pink. It is fabulous on. I'm 5'10" and I guess about 120 lbs (don't own a scale) with a larger bust. It totally rocks and I have received tons of compliments and looks. If you're slim with somewhat of a chest I would try this dress. It's a great deal and comfortable knit cotton that you can dress up or down. A great buy and one of the few cool hues available from J.Crew at this time.

  90. I am not too keen on Jenna's picks. I have seen the striped tank and its ok. I love chinos and the boyfriend didn't bother me overly much. Just another style.

I am a tiny girl too and I wish I could wear 3 inch shorts. I just don't have the confidence. I admire anyone who can and do it tastefully. Since we are JCrew aficionadas I can't imagine anyone here not wearing a tasteful 3 inch short.

I think the color palette has good and bad points. Some of pale colors are beautiful but there is a lot of dull colors as well. Dull and beautiful can work well together. A lot of the colors I initially turned my nose up at are now growing on me as I see many possibilities with such simple shades.

I agree that there is a lacking of cool colors in the JCrew color wheel. I can wear both warm and cool. I hope to see some more greens and blues in the summer collection. I LOVE the seagreen color on the capris. Such a gorgeous color. I would love to see a few more items in the seagreen. That being said I am in love with the guava color.

Jcrew is wonderful about producing some beautifully colored clothes. No other retailer compares.

    :)

  92. I was checking out the chino shorts in the store today, and they look stiffer and cheaper than previous versions. I was very disappointed. The ones I have from previous seasons are soft and more like the chino pants. Is this just my imagination?

I am one of the 3 inch short fans. It all depends on the body type. Also, I think fit and size are important--one size too small, and the shorts can look completely distasteful.

    ReplyDelete
  93. Those bf chinos are pug fugly. Yeah, I had to look.

    ReplyDelete
  94. Has anyone tried on the Icon trench? If so, how is the fit? As it is a given that jacket sizing has been all over the place during the past year, I am curious to hear where this jacket falls...TTS, tight shoulders, too large in the waist/hips? I am a broad shouldered size 12/14 so I am leary to order this. The description states "classic" but again, I have found that term to have many definitions in Jcrewspeak. TIA

  95. Great post Alexis! Thanks for asking :)

I like the Tissue Painted-Strip Tank and the Cotton Linen Seaside Shorts. Haven't seen either in person yet so this could change.

I wear 3" shorts & have a few pairs of 5" shorts in stock for conservative occasions. As others have said, it's all in how you wear it & the shape your body is in. :)

    ReplyDelete
  96. I always wear the 3" shorts, but I buy them one size too big so that they sit lower on my hips and aren't too short. The 5" is just too much fabric on my body and reminds me of the dorky shorts I used to wear as a kid in the '80s.

  97. OT -

Was at B&M tonight, saw the Canvas Boardwalk City Tote with patent leather handles (one in pink, one in yellow) Very cute and the same price as the plain leather handles!

  98. I got the garland cami in breeze already. Otherwise pass on all others.

I am not sure why they pick an Essie nail polish that's discontinued. Maybe they should work with Essie to come up with a line of coordinating nail polish that matches this season's shades.

  99. OT: Has anyone ever bought an oxford shirt from the Ralph Lauren Rugby? According to their size chart, their clothing has a "slim, modern fit," but I'm not sure if everything is TTS. Guess I'm just used to jcrew's sometimes tremendously oversized clothing :)

    Math teacher:
I agree with you. I love J.Crew but ended up buying too many cardigans and too many camis:( (My closet doesn’t appreciate it!) Just changing colors and minor designs are not enough to convince consumers to continue to buy. Hope J.Crew will be more creative in product development!

  107. Oooh, I agree with what SS said about 3" shorts. I definitely size up for my 3" shorts so they are a little loose. Short AND tight is a no-go for me.

    ReplyDelete
  108. Anony @ February 2, 2009 11:16 PM: I have found Ralph Lauren tops to be fitted. If you have any extra baggage you may want to size up. Can't speak specifically about the "rugby" collection. Just my experience w/RL.

    ReplyDelete
  109. Emily: my 3" shorts sit low so they appear to be more like 4" shorts, kind of how you are describing by sizing up. I wish JCrew would make more 4" shorts.

    ReplyDelete
  110. anon @ 957pm,

I feel the same way. I am petite and know I probably shouldn't worry so much, but don't have the confidence to wear 3"... afraid that I'm showing too much skin or getting too many unwelcome stares :/ ! but I do like someone else's suggestion in buying the 3" a size up so they sit lower on the waist. Oddly enough, my 5" chino shorts from a few years ago have shrunk a bit in the inseam that if I hold them up to newer 5" chinos, they look like 3"! lol. :) So, I've stopped putting my chino shorts in the dryer.

    georgia girl,

you're welcome! I'm glad you enjoy the link(s). When I'm bored at work it's so easy to get distracted by web surfing... lol. :P

  111. Complete OT, but does anyone have issue with non-working tracking numbers for their packages... I placed on order on Sat, got shipping confirmation Mon afternoon, but as of this morning, tracking number is still not working... Anyone with similar problems?

    ReplyDelete
  112. I totally agree with the points that have been made about the color palette. I too would love to see a more rounded palette with cooler pinks, blues and greens. The colors lately have been far to limiting. Please ease up on the grays, oranges, yellows and warm greens as they are hard to pull off for most people.

    ReplyDelete
  113. Anon 9:18. Re: tracking numbers. Yes, I am waiting for two packages from JC, and I just checked UPS, using the tracking numbers provided in the e-mail confirmation, and they did not work! So, you're not alone. By the way, I've been lurking on this blog for about one month, and this is my first post! Sorry it is OT. This is a great blog.

  114. I can't believe that people are *this close* to calling each other's style slutty on a blog about J Crew.

What do we think about the tight rolled pants? I hate the whole 'tight roll these pants and throw on some heels! Toss on some pearls and some orange nail polish! Hurl on some old school Elvis Costello glasses and this pink patent leather messenger bag!' breezy patois that the J Crew stylists pitch to us... but at the same time, I sort of like the way the pegged pants look. Is this just nostalgia for my eighth grade days, when everyone tight rolled everything?

  116. OT: How does everyone clean their Joelle tops/camis or Lydia blouses? It says dry clean only, but that can get expensive if you have lots of tops! Just wondering anyone had any tips..Thanks ladies and gents!

  118. I have one more outstanding order that still doesn't have any updated shipping info. I have the tracking number but nothing is showing up. I have a feeling it's still sitting at JCrew. Good thing I don't need it right away, geesh.

Oh, and I think 3" shorts are fine if you're comfortable with it. I tend to prefer them with blowsy tops anyway. That length and bermuda length shorts are the best...the in between sizes can look odd.

  125. I like some, but not all of Jenna's picks. I thought I would LOVE the Garland Cami but when I tried it on...didn't do a thing for me and it seems SO delicate...like it wouldn't hold up well. I am ALL OVER the boyfriend chinos. I ordered the slate color and am anxious to see the fit. Unlike the rest of you Skinny Minnies, I have some curves and most J.Crew pants don't fit proportionately for me. We'll see about these! I am willing to give the cluster cocktail ring a look-see...want to see it IRL.

  131. Hi ladies!

I'm a little late, but I have an item for sale:

The metallic tweed pencil skirt. It's black and silver and looks like tweed. It's b-e-a-u-t-i-f-u-l, but is too long on me (I'm 5'1"). It's a sz 4. It sits very slightly high on the waist. I paid $161.64 (FS item, 149.99 + shipping and tax). I am asking that amount (give or take the .64 :)

Also, it's on the slightly big side for a 4. FYI.
