Weekly Share: Other JCrew-like Retailers

This is the weekly "Other JCrew-like Retailers" post (similar to the "Off On A Tangent" posts), where we can share our finds from other retailers that have offerings similar to J.Crew (like Anthropologie, LE Canvas, Gap, BR, Talbots, Ann Taylor, and the like.)

If you have recently encountered items that are similar to J.Crew, maybe you might be willing to share that information with us in this post.

Please feel free to share your story on almost any topic— including experiences with certain merchandise pieces, promotions/ offers, in-store visits, transactions with store associates, etc.

  1. I've shared a lot of J.Crew-like items in this post on my blog. Included this week are alternatives for the Schoolboy blazer in velvet, Tippi sweater in swiss dot, Arrow sweater-jacket, and Collection scoopneck top in silk scarf foulard, to name just a few. :)

  4. I'm very impressed by the quality of Madewell. I previously wouldn't shop there but it was too much like Free People which I like but don't wear. I've recently went back to Madwell last month and WOW! It looks way more like J.Crew but with a twist. Still there are things that I think are too young for me BUT I have a new favorite store! So if you haven't went in awhile...give it a try!

  5. Between Black Friday and Cyber Monday I bought a few things from Club Monaco, C Wonder and Neiman Marcus Last Call. It was the first time I shopped at all these places. The items all arrived quickly and I have to say I'm very happy with all my purchases. The merino sweater from Club Monaco is made of smooth Italian yarn and the fit is fantastic. The black lace dress from C Wonder is beautiful and very flattering. I'm impressed and will definitely shop at these places more. It didn't hurt that they all offered crazy good deals during the Black Friday / Cyber Monday frenzy, either.

  6. I got my Blarney delivery today. It is very nice quality at a good price. I need to decide what I will keep. I tried the Lambswool Cardigan, the Lambswool Duffle Cardigan, Celtic Aran Hoodie, and the Helene Honeycomb Aran Sweater (in purple!). I am definitely returning the Celtic Aran Hoodie (Small). I wasn't in love with the cabling at the bottom. The quality is nice though. I'm on the fence about the Honeycomb Aran Sweater (Medium). The purple is fun and different and I like the length with split hem. It fits well at the hips but is a bit big at the shoulders/top. The Lambswool Cardigan is terrific (Small). It's not as thick as the other sweaters but is still substantial. At first I thought it was missing the button, but it came with a cute silver stick pin (in a bag attached to the tags) to keep it closed. It is quite long in the back, totally covers my back side and then some. The silhouette is different but I really like it. I am on the fence about the Lambswool Duffle Cardigan too (Navy, Small). The hood is attached with buttons and the inside of the hood is gray. It's a bit frumpy on me but I am not sure if I care about that.

I guessed correctly on all the sizes, surprisingly (didn't use their measurements). I'm usually a size Medium in J. Crew sweaters, occasionally could be a Small in some other brands that run bigger. Hope that helps anyone who is wondering about their sizing or these items in particular.

    1. thanks for the reviews cate! i wasn't wondering about those items but it was helpful to hear about their sizing in general. i ordered the aran cowlneck sweater in small and the aran boyfriend cardigan in medium based on their measurements and the fact that i would prefer a relaxed fit for both of them. i'm usually a small in j crew but often size up to a medium for a looser fit, as i did with these. i hope they work out! if they don't i might try the honeycomb sweater because i like the long length and split hem as well (details i didn't notice before so thanks!).

    2. I'd love to hear what you think of the Aran Cowlneck (almost ordered that one) and the Aran Boyfriend Cardigan when you get them. I thought I might re-order the Honeycomb Aran Sweater in a size down, but the size Small is sold out in both colors. I wonder if they re-stock. I decided to keep the Lambswool Duffle Cardigan, it looks better if I button one button. I wore it yesterday and loved it so that was the right decision! Now need to decide about the others.

    3. I'm sure they'll restock the honeycomb sweater eventually. I'll be sure to review the other sweaters here when I receive them next week! I think gigi also ordered the cowlneck so perhaps she will also post a review soon :)

    4. I am *still* waiting for my order. I emailed to ask about it and was told the cowlneck was canx. They were shipping the last one to me and saw that it was damaged. I'm trying to be optimistic, but the long wait between ordering and canx item are dampening my enthusiasm. I guess I was going to get a note in the box about the cowlneck? THey didn't send any info to me that it wasn't coming & only informed me when I inquired about the order status. We'll see...

    5. gigi - I'm so sorry to hear this! Did you receive a shipping notice? Because mine listed the items in my order so I imagine yours should have stated that the cowlneck was cancelled. I also ordered the cowlneck in a size small right around the same time as you... not sure what size you got though.

    7. My Celtic Aran Hoodie in "stone" was delivered last night; ordered on Nov. 25th. I went with their sizing chart & that turned out correct. Beautiful sweater, nicely long, lovely cable patterns, with two issues: a bit too much fabric under the arms, and sleeves too short by at least 2 in. That's a perpetual problem for me, can't really blame Blarney's. Reasonably, I ought to return it, but I'm in love & actually thinking about knitting on some extra ribbing myself... if I can find some matching wool quickly, that is.

  7. Just picked up from Old Navy a sweater that is similar to the red fair isle ski sweater from last season.

  8. @Kelly - I saw that Old Navy sweater too. It was cute. I looked at a shirt that reminded me of the Drapey Crepe Henley Tunic. Not as thick, but the style looked the same.

  9. I placed an order at Madewell last week and received notice only yesterday that one of the items was no longer available. It took a ridiculous 6 days for them to tell me this and for them to ship the rest of my order (which usually takes 1 day). This was especially frustrating because on cyber monday I could have bought the exact same item from another retailer (it's third party) for less than I would have paid at Madewell, but now of course it has returned to full price. To add to the frustration, this is the third time in the last two months that an item I ordered has been cancelled by Madewell due to lack of inventory.

I decided to politely complain via email, which I don't normally do but the consistency of the errors and built up frustration sent me over the edge, and within 4 hours I received an apologetic email and a shipping notice for a $50 gift card. I'm really impressed with their response because it actually corrects the problem as much as is possible (it makes up for the difference in price for the same item from the other retailer).
