J.Crew Reviews {straight from the JCAs!}

This is the weekly "J.Crew Reviews {straight from the JCAs}" post, to help each other share our reviews.

So if you have recently purchased, or stopped by a J.Crew store to try on an item (or two) from J.Crew, maybe you might be willing to share that information with us in this post.

Also, this request is not just limited to clothes. Please feel free to discuss bags, shoes, jewelry, accessories, etc.

In particular, if you could mention a few of the noteworthy details like fit, size, fabric, and the like— that would be fantastic! Thanks in advance! :)

  1. No2 woll pencil skirt in pinot noir is a very deep red irl, similar to the everly pump. Highly recommend. I sized TTS

Also the silk shirt is flowy and soft, high quality silk. I went with my regular size

The stripe tee with leather sleeves is really cute however, the bottom is fairly unfitted. I sized TTS and feel the shoulder may be a little tight but a size larger was just not going to work (no shape at the waist)

  2. I checked out the Liberty pajama set in Katie Ann floral. It looks like they are a saturated cherry red print online, which I thought was pretty, but it turns out it is more a range of pinks which I love even more. So, so pretty. I want to keep them, but even at 30% off the price is ridiculous. My Liberty ditzy floral pajamas are my favorites, though, so I want these eventually.

Berry Bouquet Top. Pretty, but overpriced. Even though the colors and print are gorgeous, I didn't love it enough to keep it. The fit felt boxy (not sure if it looked that way, probably not). I wouldn't wear it enough to make it worth it.

  3. Marled Colorblock-Shoulder Sweater, in pepper black. I think this is the sweater I tried on in the store. I had on a white tee when I tried this on, and it was absolutely covered in black lint when I took the sweater off after just a very quick try-on. My tee was completely unwearable without taking a lint brush to it.

    1. I had the same experience! Covered EVERYTHING I was both wearing and trying on with tons of lint. Sad bc I really liked the sweater

    2. I agree the sweater was cute enough, but they couldn't pay me to have this in my closet. The lint was out of control, took 15 minutes to get it all off with a lint brush.

  4. Has anyone worn their jeweled-starburst sweater yet and can comment on how it is holding up? The material is really soft and feels like it might easily pill, and I'm trying to decide whether to keep the sweater or return it.

  5. Could someone tell me what the color name was of the burgundy Icon Trench (wool/cashmere) this year? I really want to try to track it down (unless a JCA talks me out of it!)

    1. I think it was called 'cabernet,' same as last year.

  6. How do the tall Dean boots fit? I have a pair of Bryce boots for last year in a size 9, and they are a little roomy but wearable. I take a 9 in most JC shoes (8.5 in most other brands).

  7. OT: I never shop Boden but I love the off duty sweater. Is the merino one worth it...it's still like $100. I know how to work the deals at J.Crew and when things will be cheapest, but I have no idea at Boden. Is $100 the best deal I'll get?

    1. I love this sweater in cashmere, it's okay in cotton, but I have never tried it in the merino wool. Gigi posted a link to Dina's blog below on this thread, she knows a ton about Boden pricing etc.

    2. I actually started with the merino version and adore it. Today I finally snagged the cashmere version in poppy. The lowest price I've seen for the merino is $96. Highly recommend!

  8. Hello!
Does anyone have thoughts/reviews on the blackwatch plaid schoolboy blazer? I'm assuming it's popular because it's sold out online, but I haven't seen it mentioned here.
I'm deciding between this blazer and a Talbots one. The J.Crew one is a bit pricey for me even at 30% off since I'm not sure how often I can wear a plaid blazer (do you think it will go one sale?). However, the Talbots blazer is 66% polyester, which I'm not thrilled about.
    Thanks for any advice!

    1. The blackwatch blazer is TTS,i tried the 0 and that is my usual size.
I didnt care for the slight puff sleeve and the feel was not particualr soft.
      It was beautiful though.

    2. Amanda Lee: Not to confuse you, but I really like the blazer! I reviewed it on my blog

    3. I tried them both but bought the Talbots one. It is softer, more comfortable and the quality is good. Don't be put off by the poly. I get so many compliments on it!

    4. Thank you all for the responses!

Ina, I appreciate you sharing the review. // Rynetta, you reminded me that I did see a review on your lovely blog. // Sunny, I'm so glad you found the Talbots blazer and are enjoying it! I am usually a 6 in J.Crew but found that I need a 2 or 4 in the blazer. Did you have to size down as well?

      Delete
    5. Hi Amanda,
I sized down to a 4 on the Talbots blazer. I really like the cut of it. Simple and clean, which is good imo with a plaid pattern. I had been wanting a black watch blazer since last winter, and this was my first Talbots purchase in ages.

I really like it but don't know if I have missed out. Are other people seeing it in-store?

    3. I saw it in the Tysons Corner (VA) store this past weekend. I didn't try it on as I am currently 8 months pregnant ;)

    4. I saw it only in on of the ATlanta stores, that was the Avenues at Est Cobb in Marietta,Georgia.

  11. Items I liked and kept-

side-button sweater in stripe--not very heavy material, but cute and fits true to size.

drapey swing tee--very thin, but cute and will work for what I wanted it--to go under Anthro cardi

    Items that didn't work--

goodwin tote in navy/black--way too big for me and didn't like the gold zippers with the navy and black. This is the second J Crew bag I've tried that has been way too big. Same result for biennial satchel. I'm not small-almost 5'7"-and feel like I would be carrying luggage with this bag. Maybe I need to start ordering the "mini" versions to find something large without being huge.

crystal venus flytrap necklace and earrings--a little too shiny for me and didn't like how necklace seemed to want to flip over.

factory snowflake tee--pretty thin and snowflake was a little too big and shiny

factory field jacket--not bad and a great price but decided it wasn't something I would really reach for. I keep wanting to try regular field jacket in navy so I decided to send factory version back. I think I would prefer no belt.

factory matchstick cords in cabarnet-great color and great fit tts but wasn't sure if I would wear colored cords that much.

    1. I forgot to add that I ordered the factory bow top after reading Gigi's review and am keeping it. Runs tts and very cute and different. Thanks Gigi!

    2. Newbie - I love that top! Thx for the shout out ;)

    3. I just got the Factory Snowflake tee and kept it. Wore it for the first time today. I think it's festive without being over the top. I would say it is a mid-weight fabric - not one of the tissue style tees but just slightly thinner than the perfect tees.

I also got a factory wool pencil skirt - this is going back - IMO the fabric is of poor quality. It runs a bit smaller than the pencil skirts from retail.

Also, got the navy double cloth metro coat - love. I have a number of metro coats and find that they fit great. I've been wanting Navy for awhile and it is on sale now so a very reasonable price with the additional % off. Will wear it for many years.

  12. I ordered the wintress puffer (navy) when it was on promo pricing and then + 30% off so I paid $182 (tall size so it was $10 more than regular).
I love this coat - it's so flattering and looks nice with jeans and boots. I wore it yesterday with winter white matchstick cords and it looked great. I'm 5'10" and a size 8 usually. I started with the Tall Med but had to exchange for the Tall Small since the medium was way too loose, esp. in the lower half. I love the belt, and it stays tied and doesn't loosen up at all, even being worn for a long time. Inner cuffs on the sleeves are nice and they have thumbholes. On the downside, the pockets drive me crazy: they have a flap and a snap so if you are constantly in and out of your pockets like I am (for car keys, tissues) it's a PAIN to unsnap and reach around and in. Leaving them unsnapped looks sloppy and unsnapping them and tucking the flap of fabric into the pocket leaves a big exposed snap sitting on your hip. Also I don't find this coat to be as warm as I'd like (but I live in Michigan, so ymmv). I wore it out walking the other day it was a cold day, about 15 degrees and I was thinking I am usually warmer when I wear my 4-year old puffer from the Gap! So for looks I give it a 9 out of 10 but for functionality a 4 out of 10. However, I am vain and chose looks over function. :)

    1. Thanks for the review Julie! =)

I've considered purchasing JC's long puffer coats on several occasions for the looks, but always balked because of functionality/durability (I got the short puffer jacket once and within a couple of years the edges started to fray). You can't beat Eddie Bauer for functionality (though for form/looks EB is not quite there yet). My EB puffer coat from 2004 feels and looks as if I just got it this winter.

  13. I went to the store today and there were a lot of markdowns, many cheaper than online. Offhand, the Scallop Dress in the bright blue was $39.99 (deal!), the Vachetta leather pave belt was $14.99, and the Lace peplum top and Embroidered peasant top were cheaper (I can't remember the prices, rats.)

I tried on and of course loved the silver bar-stripe tee!

    1. Matchstick cords in sunwashed sand $19.99; dark charcoal $29.99 (before 30% off); star bracelet $29.99; crew neck perfect fit tees, looks like all colors marked down, some $9.99 but most $19.99. Looks like the markdown guns are going to start blazing!

  17. The collection topcoat is currenty sold out. If you're curious anyway, I reviewed it here and have since added pics of it with jeans, the skier sweater & patent Valentinas to see if it can be 'casualized,' as in the stock photo.

The collection sequin Darbys got a 2nd cut today to $119.99 and I reviewed them on 1060 Pairs.

  18. I tried a couple of coats.

The Cocoon coat seems to run big. I ordered size 8, same as other J. Crew coats, but I wonder if I should try a 6. Has anyone else sized down in this coat? The size 6 is backordered until late January. I'm not sure about the color either so I may just return it. It is more pink than peach, but maybe not a true pink.

The Convertible Toggle Coat in Hthr Graphite came in size 8 and this is a bit small through the shoulders with a sweater on under it. It is kind of thin and I don't care for the brown leather where the toggles are attached to the coat, with the gray coat and black toggles/buttons. Returned.

  19. Just got a pair of Bowery slim in Prince of Wales check in charcoal #08489. Once again a slim wool pant, narrow leg opening and very tailored. The plaid reads almost solid from across the room but as you get closer you see the tone on tone look of it. While not quite as nice a fabric as the Ludlows sport, they are half the price. I can't be the only one noticing that the Bowery slims are selling out quicker than the Ludlows.

Great pants, they will look especially good with a cashmere sweater or one in wool with texture. And for the price you can get both the pant and the sweater for the price of the Ludlows. But with the discount code being offered they almost all gone.

  20. Hi JCAs! Not a review but a question...does anyone own the Leather Front Top (item 04320)? I own it and I do really love it but after 4 or 5 wears, I decided to take it to my dry cleaner and he called me after a few days and said he doesn't want to clean it because he's afraid the color of the leather will bleed onto the light gray fabric back. Should I try a different cleaner? Can it be that the Crew has made a top that can't be worn because it can't be cleaned?? Ugh!! Anyone else own this top and had success cleaning it? Should I call CS for advice?

  23. I ordered the linen Merci tee with the 30% and free shipping. I really liked the shirt, but the collar was a little weird and wide. It seemed really stretched out. I might size down and order in a small.

  24. Does anyone have trouble with their leather Cece flats squeaking? I recently bought burnt sienna and black studded and they both squeak horribly. Will this go away with wear? I really like them otherwise, but the noise is almost unacceptable. I am thinking about returning them since I haven't worn them out of the house yet, but thought I would check here first. Thanks in advance for the help!

  29. I stopped in my B&M over the weekend. I scored the Vintage sweatshirt in the grey for around $20 and let me say, I love this sweatshirt. I’m going to keep my eye out for the navy now. So comfy, TTS, and not too boxy for once. I also picked up the cate cami in black for around $35ish. I took a 4 in this and it fit perfectly (I’m a 6 in button downs/S tees). My only concern with this is how it will hold up to snags.

I really liked the Boy popover in bows when I saw it online, but loved it more so after trying it on. Sadly, this didn’t end up going home with me though. The color is so beautiful…the bows are a dark navy…perfect for the holidays. The shirt is the cotton/skin blend so it is thin, but not too sheer. Popovers usually are misses for me in terms of fit, so I couldn’t justify spending the money if the fit wasn’t near perfect. So pretty though…

  31. Couple of reviews from a recent order; Petite Stadium Cloth Boulevard Trench - Dark Artichoke. Love this coat, the color is subtle, between a green and brown. I bought two slim trench's last year and love the style so this will be a good addition for colder temps. Fits TTS, I got the same size as in the slim trench and majesty peacoat. Petite Pear Necklace, this was on sale forever and I am not sure if this is a keeper, it is a grey color but says white in the description. I am going to try with some outfits and then decide. Keeper chambray shirt in star dot, I don't know if I got a defective one but it is very faded on the top around the shoulders, looks very cheap (well actually it was only $39.99 with 30% off) so back it will go. Merino Tippi in Heather Oak, still available on sale with now 40% off. A nice basic color, I am late to the game for my Tippi love so going to stock up. They seem to suit my lifestyle and the weather here in Colorado where layering is key. Last is the Mirrored pyramids bracelet, nothing over the top but a classic style and color. HTH someone.

    item 11745

Returned. Coat is NOT lined and wool is thin and scratchy. Fit is big, very loose. Would need to size down, but did not drape/fall.

  33. In case somebody is wondering about the Collection pants in crepe (#05825) I just received them. I ordered my regular 0 and they fit well if a bit on the slouchy side . The poly crepe is quite substantial but they are unlined. They are just a bit high-waisted. The "military embellishment" is very subtle and adds some interest in my opinion. I really like them, these will nicely dress up plaid shirts. I recommend them especially for the ridicolously low price and no final sale.
