Weekly Share: Other JCrew-like Retailers

This is the weekly "Other JCrew-like Retailers" post (similar to the "Off On A Tangent" posts), where we can share our finds from other retailers that have offerings similar to J.Crew (like Anthropologie, LE Canvas, Gap, BR, Talbots, Ann Taylor, and the like.)

If you have recently encountered items that are similar to J.Crew, maybe you might be willing to share that information with us in this post.

Please feel free to share your story on almost any topic— including experiences with certain merchandise pieces, promotions/ offers, in-store visits, transactions with store associates, etc.

  1. So the Paul Smith loafers I got on Sale are leather soled (as are all PS shoes?). I returned the Haste ankle boots as they were too pointy and made my feet look ginormous. But the loafers look and feel wonderful. I will not be wearing them on the street though since they are leather-soled (and Made in Italy <3). Any tips for prolonging their life?

    1. You can have a cobbler add a rubber sole to them. A former colleague did this with all her shoes back in the mid ‘90s in NYC. i did it with a few pairs of shoes I always wore at the time when they started to wear out.
Forgive me for asking but why would you not wear them on the street? Shouldn’t you wear and enjoy them?

    2. I have some Nisolo oxfords with leather soles and was worried about ruining them and also they were crazy slippery! I added some kind of thick grippy clear tape to the bottom of mine (read about it on a shoe forum somewhere). It's been on there years and not peeled off yet (granted I don't wear those shoes terribly often). Having a thin rubber sold added would be great too. I just live in a very small city and we have one shoe repair guy and it's hit or miss as to if he's ever actually open or in the shop, ha.

    3. Thank you ladies for weighing in =). Always can count on your expertise.

Suz, my plan is to wear them indoors (at the office) since I'm so hard on my shoes when pounding the dirty streets of NY. I also tend to be over-protective of my higher-end purchases (which are few and far between). YOLO right?

    4. Oh I get it, like wear boots or sneakers to work kind of thing. That makes sense. But in NY I’m sure you can find a great cobbler and have the rubber sole added.

    5. I agree with Suz Has. I have rubber sole protectors added to all of my new leather sole shoes before I wear them for the first time. It’s kind of expensive, but totally worth it. I have several pairs of leather oxfords that I’ve owned for well over a decade and wore a lot when I lived and worked in NYC, but they still look great even with all the miles they have on them.

    6. Good to know Jeanne!
Meanwhile there are some great markdowns on booties at Nordstrom Rack. Of course mostly in the 5-range. Not very appealing to me in terms of their aesthetic but for those prices, makes me wonder if it is worth the effort of investing in higher-end-higher-care shoes (yes, yes, yes).
