This is not really a vent, but take a look at the product photos for Madewell item # NB373 (Space-Dyed Staley V-neck Pullover Sweater),the photo of the model that has the black background. She's pulling the sweater up and her boob is almost all out lol. We've come a long way from the preppy J. Crew catalogs that we all loved. I actually liked that sweater and saw that photo and was like, well that is not a styling tip I will be utilizing!

DeleteBut that is a complaint I have (not just jcrew and madewell) where the models are in all sorts of weird positions and you can't tell what the item looks like just straight on. Or there's no photos of the back of the item. Or only one photo of shoes and none with a foot in them to see how it looks.
Well the tag line on the cover page does say “all out fall.” They weren’t kidding.

DeleteMiss JR, same issues for me with J. Crew too. There are many products with a single photo of the item by itself (not on a person). I can't tell much from that.
Delete@Suz, great comment so funny. On another note though I question the reasoning behind shooting a photo like this. What is the point? For one, I think it’s tacky and vulgar for a Madewell campaign. There’s nothing sexy about it. Provocative yes considering their demographics. Call me old fashioned no problem, last of all, she’s no Monica Bellucci.🤣

DeleteGrrrch, it did get me to look, but definitely not to buy. Based on the unpleasant expression I'm thinking the alpaca in the blend was itching and she just had to get up and under for a good scratch.

Delete@MissJR - I don’t think that’s a mistake. I’ve noticed that merchants will choose photographs of models in strange positions to try to hide fit and design issues. It frustrates me, too.
DeleteAnother rollout with no scoop neck long or even short sleeve tees. What happened to all of the beautiful pencil skirts? Miss the longer torso tees and sweaters that are not cropped, boxy or oversized. Please give up cotton options for those sensitive to wool/wool blends.
ReplyDelete@shadow, I noticed that as well. Perhaps they’re sitting on a container ship sitting off the Port of LA or NY. Then there’s this last thought maybe Miss Olympia feels we should all be wearing skirts that look like sacks

Delete@Lynn You may be right about the new stock sitting in a container ship somewhere. I’ve noticed some online retailers’ websites show new stock as being pre-order items, not available until late October, November or even December. I assume they’re receiving merchandise later than they expected.

DeleteMy vent is about natural fibers that don't feel like they used to. I received my BR pants in spruce green that have been discussed on this site. The label says 100 percent wool. I don't believe it. Wool is soft and pliable. It drapes. This fabric has a harsh rib to it and a certain crustiness. I noticed the same crusty feel in my J. Crew reimagined navy floral knit PJs that I bought this past summer. Has anyone else noticed that natural fibers don't feel natural anymore?
ReplyDeleteYes, absolutely! I recall buying a perfect fit tee a couple years ago that felt suspiciously slippery, as well as a “100% cotton” turtleneck from Lands’ End that also felt synthetic.
DeleteWay back when I was still in college, I remember a class testing some “100% silk” fabric from a local fabric store. Of course it was a synthetic blend. The store had no idea. They were relying on the manufacturer to be honest with their labeling. That was back in the 1980s. The problem is undoubtably much worse now. Chinese factories have a lot of competition and will cut corners to gain an advantage and make a profit. Merchants will turn a blind eye to quality control issues because they, too, are looking for profit. When everyone else is cheating, it’s difficult to be successful when you’re honest and ethical. The industry is unfortunately not well regulated.
@Mary, I agree with you and don’t believe it either. Just reading about some of these companies that go on and on about reimagined and recycling. What do they do to prevent mold with apparel that’s been sitting somewhere for months or in humid climates? Perhaps these sold wool pants or 100% cotton items contain recycled Coke Bottles. Joking aside I believe not all fabric is what it appears to be.
DeleteLynn you are right about the mold and mildew issue - that's one reason why fabrics are treated with formaldehyde resins. Not so much synthetics, but cottons and wools.
Delete@pbanos, gives you the creeps doesn’t it? I believe I can sniff these odors out especially with shirts, blouses and that infamous odor reeking leather handbag that some of us purchased for next to nothing. I had to air it out it was so bad.
DeleteAnd recycled cashmere and wool blend (see sweater BB407)? I am all up for repurposing and upcycling. However, cashmere and wool sourced from scraps = shorter threads = major pilling shortly after purchase = back into the recycling it will go. It won't break the vicious cycle but will contribute to it.
Delete@Jeanne, Exactly and as you stated being unregulated they are morally bankrupt. The word greed comes to mind and if they continue to get away with it they will continue to do so. So unfortunate for the consumer.
Delete@lynn Recycling Coke bottles into fabric is not so far fetched. I just finished reading Wardrobe Crisis, which talks about the recycling of plastic waste into fabric, but they seem to think it's a good thing. The whole book is about the environmental damage and cruelty involved in fast fashion. @anonymous I had no idea about the recycling of wool, but they talk about that too and it's as you describe. While I'm glad to hear that cute little angora bunnies are not being tortured any more for the fuzzy sweaters I used to wear without a thought, I'm not so sure about plastic in my clothes. It's the same principle as GMOs in food. Tell me what you're doing and let me make the decision whether this is something I want to sign on for.
DeleteI have two of the Everlane Recashmere sweaters. They are nowhere near as soft as their regular cashmere but honestly they have not pilled. The one I got is not an exciting shape, just a crewneck but the neckline has a nice detail. I watched a video where they described the process and I thought it was interesting. The price was reasonable and I’ve had for a few seasons. To be honest I’d rather buy that than anything with acrylic. I hate that feeling.
DeleteI prized JC's cotton popovers & button downs for their wonderful soft feel but the few I bought last year are so scratchy that I've stopped wearing (& buying) them.
DeleteI've realized for that quality one needs to go higher up the retail chain.
PS to previous. The J. Crew PJs were in "reimagined cotton." No amount of imagining will let me think these are all cotton.
ReplyDeleteI’ve definitely noticed this with cotton tshirts. I assumed it was some type of sizing that made them kind of crisp.
DeleteBack to the banana pants, because these are the ones that also come in red. Did you like the fit or are they overall bad?
I'm going to try the size 4, which is one size up from my usual size. The 2 was a bit snug through the hips, which I blame for polyester's tendency to cling. Here's my frustration--despite my hatred of being hoodwinked by the fabric content, the color is pretty and the cut is flattering. At some point, I can't afford my own fashion perfectionism. I just need some clothes to wear, ya know?
