"Thanks!" to Silver_lining (in the "Darlings, is it time for a J.Crew coupon code?" post)who gave us a great and insightful review of this coat:
"Just wanted to give a quick review of the Wool-Cashmere Dana coat I just received (in Camel).
It was packed in a big gift box with the cream colored ribbon around it, in tissue paper but not in any plastic, with a black hanger bag and the little bag of cedar balls enclosed. Nice presentation!
However, the material looked almost a little ratty, and was not as smooth as I had anticipated. Nice color, but was apprehensive about the fabric.
I am a 2 top and bottom, and my other JC coats are also a 2. The fit on the Dana was just... off. I know that the major complaint with JC's trench-style coats and jackets as of late is that they're too big in the torso. I found the Dana to have almost the opposite problem - that shirring across the shoulders in the back made it feel tight (and this is with a tissue tee underneath, so a heavier sweater would just not do). However, the bottom part of the coat was quite huge! It fit comfortably in the waist area, but then flared out and hit right at my knee (not at midthigh like the website description says - I'm about 5'5"). Overall, it looked like it was swallowing me, but then there's the problem of it being too small in the shoulders, so sizing down wouldn't have helped. Doesn't look like there's a petite option, either - this coat must have been pinned all over the place on the model in the catalog!
I'm quite disappointed, but not totally surprised given the weird sizing issues lately. This one's going back. Boo!
Oh, and PS - my coat did not have buttons at the cuffs as depicted in the picture on the website - Now give me THAT coat and I think I'd have better luck! ;)"
"Thanks!" again to Silver_Lining! :)
What are your thoughts on this jacket? Are you thinking of purchasing it soon? Do you already own it? If so, please let us know what you think. :)
Sorry to hear about the coat:(
ReplyDeleteI am very disappointed that the website picture did not match what you bought! Boo to JCrew for that one---AGAIN!
I don't have this coat, but I do like it. I will probably try it on at some point, but I want to wait for the prices to come down.
ReplyDeleteI did get to try on the Penny jacket in black a couple of days ago, and I have to say that I was disappointed. It does that weird flaring thing that the wool Fiona does - fitted in the shoulders, then ultra-boxy in the body. I SO wanted to love the Penny! I would have bought it FP right then and there, but it just didn't fit right. I will see if it hangs around long enough to go on sale and I can justify taking it to the tailor :P
Thank you for the review. I had asked for the poll on favorite coat cloths, and with the wool-cashmere being in the lead I was seriously considering this coat. I was uncertain about it since it's online only so no chance for me to try it on in the store first. Sorry you had to go through the effort to order it, but thanks for the info you've shared. You will save me a purchase!
ReplyDeleteIf you like camel cashmere blend coats, I recommend trying to get your hands on last year's Dani wool-cashmere coat. I got it and recommended it to some friends. We all adore it! The fit is perfect and it's soft as can be! The cashmere really goes a long way. I got camel but they had a couple of other colors. I actually got a 0 petite which really fit ideally, but I often can go with a non-petite if the shape is fitted - especially in a double-breasted design like the Dani.
ReplyDeleteI recently saw one on ebay in camel... But I think I came across it just by searching J.Crew coats, not by name.
Silver lining: The way the coat was sent to you sounds like the exact same packaging used for the butterfield. That was a really nice touch since the coat doesn't seem to be a collection item. Maybe they do that on items over the $300 mark?? I'm so sorry the coat didn't live up to expectations though. :(
ReplyDeleteMichelle, I thought the SAME thing about the Penny! It's such a shame because it has potential to be a classic...maybe we'll be more willing to forgive the shape of it once it gets marked down! ;)
what happened to the necklace post???
ReplyDeleteI got the lady coat in the mail the other day and it does run small. I normally wear a small or a 4, but the coat in a 4 was a little snug even just with a t-shirt on. Just FYI........:)
ReplyDeleteWhere did the post/entry about the surprise gift necklace go? Anyone have a link to it?
ReplyDeleteAm I crazy? I was just going to post under the necklace/Slastena/credit card holders gift section...is that post GONE??? Thanks. Maybe I need a drink!
ReplyDeleteAlexis,
ReplyDeleteDid JCrew write you and ask you to remove the necklace post? Just wondering where it went....
Mary
My Dana was missing one of the four buttons on the front...it looked ridiculous! However, I liked the fabric, it was exactly what I expected. And the fit was also what I expected - I am a 10.
ReplyDeleteOne of my previous comments also went missing - I thought Alexis had deleted it (although I had no idea why). If a whole topic is missing, maybe she didn't!
ReplyDeleteHdayton, lleila, Anon at 5:52PM, Mary, and others: Unfortunately I did delete the post about the necklace/cardmembers. J.Crew contacted me and asked me to remove it. I have never had that request from J.Crew before (and to be honest, I have never really heard from them before this either) so I complied.
ReplyDeleteTo be quite honest I am sad that I did it, although I do understand their position. :(
Alexis, it is sad to see the post go...:(
ReplyDeleteOn other hand, they ARE reading it!!!!!!:))))
It is quite an accomplishment! I do hope they take our comments as constructive criticism and will make a good use of them.
Alexis, I sent you an email.:)
ReplyDeleteI don't understand their position. If they don't want those who didn't receive necklaces to feel bad, they can send something to everyone. Or no one. We have a right to discuss our experiences.
ReplyDeleteI don't like coats that belt at the wait - it always seems like there's no perfect way to cinch it. When it's as tight as I like, it makes the coat drape weirdly.
ReplyDeleteI can understand their position; however they had no right to ask you to remove it.
ReplyDeleteSlastena: Thanks for understanding- I do appreciate it. :)
ReplyDeleteI actually feel very bad about it. I felt like I was in a Catch-22- either upset J.Crew or upset the great members of this blog (neither of which I wanted to do). Ultimately, I do feel like I let you all down and I am really sorry. :(
3-Penny: I actually saw/felt one of those wool-cashmere Dani coats at Barr-ee Station in the Outer Banks a few weeks ago (what a GREAT store! They have 2 locations - if you go to the OBX, I highly recommend having a look), which is what prompted me to go ahead and order the Dana. The fabric just didn't seem like the Dani to me - I wonder if I got a return coat or something? Anyway, I'll be keeping my eye out for the right camel-colored coat, and enjoying my navy Felicia and black wool Charlie coats in the meantime!
ReplyDeleteAww don't feel bad, you didn't do anything wrong! It's just surprising that they actually asked you to remove the post.
ReplyDeleteAll - I completely agree about the Penny. They are not kidding when they say a-line shape. Was so excited to buy it too, but just was not the classic jacket I expected. Would look darling on someone smaller though. I am a size 10.
ReplyDeleteWow! Alexis - what a tough decision. I am glad I did not have to make it. Don't apologize. If this were a professional blog, I would say fight 'em for it. However, it is a hobby of yours, and it shouldn't cause any angst or additional stress in your life.
lleila: Thank you for understanding as well. :)
ReplyDeleteHi all - I need help, please. Will be buying the orange Lucille for someone tomorrow. Can you give me some size comparisons. She wears an x-small cashmere bateau neck sweater. A size 0 in skirts and dresses. The Bella in 4 was slightly big and the Wool Tuesday trench fit in the shoulders in a 4. Any ideas which size to go with???
ReplyDeleteanon: I tried the penny on in a 2. Unfortunately, it was still too boxy/bulky looking. :(
ReplyDeleteAlexis: Please don't question your judgment! You have done and continue to do an AMAZING job with this blog! I would never want you to feel "caught in the middle"! By all means you should always manage this blog as you see fit!Thank you again for creating this wonderful forum! :)
(I must say I'm a bit curious if they gave a reason as to why they wanted the post removed. However, completely understand if you're unable to share.) :)
anon: You'd probably be safe with a 2 in the Lucille. That may be a good compromise for the broad shoulders and tiny body. jmho. :)
ReplyDeleteI wonder if the fit is the same as the Tuesday Wool Trench coat? The wide collar is extremely similar, which is why I suspect that this might be the case--and of course, the Tuesday coat also had problematic fit.
ReplyDeleteAlexis,
ReplyDeleteI know this is off topic but, I think it is unfair that JCrew put you in the terrible position of asking you to remove something from YOUR blog. You are an innocent person here! You just read what slastena wrote on her blog. You were and still are, excited and happy for her! You were just sharing your joy and excitement with your readers! I am surprised JCrew didnt ask slastena to remove her blog entry about the gift.
As always Alexis, you are the best! I feel bad that you were put in this situation. You did what you thought was best. We support you.
Alexis - I understand your position too and feel that you were put between a rock and a hard place. Don't feel bad. You did nothing wrong. Since you are our greatest source of all J.Crew news, we don't want to stop the flow of all the goodies.
ReplyDeleteBut J.Crew - WTF?! Shame on you! How dare you try to regulate the conversations of people who have the right to talk about whatever they please in a public, unpaid, unendorsed forum? We're not getting tipped off by J.Crew's coroprate office about company secrets and spilling them on the internet. So what if we want to talk about free gifts, or coupon codes, or secret sales - it's our conversation and we as consumers are entitled to share our stories and opinions. It's not like Slastena or anyone else who received a free gift wouldn't have bragged to all their friends on the phone, by email, or in person. Is J.Crew going to censor our emails and phone conversations too?
Besides, isn't it good for J.Crew's business when we get excited about something and want to shop more? Seems like a win-win to me!
I'm really disappointed in them about this. If J.Crew wanted to respond in a fair and intelligent manner, they should have done it in writing by either posting a comment or by emailing you and asking you to publish their response. Now we're mad because 1) they told you what to write/not write on your personal blog, and 2) they seem to send people gifts and reward cards arbitrarily without providing any explanation of what constitutes a "worthy" shopper in their eyes. Of course we're going to wonder what's going on!
Anon at 6:25PM, Weab, MB, & 3-Penny-Princess: Thank you as well for understanding. Also, thank you for the kind words- I do appreciate them! :)
ReplyDeleteUltimately, the reason is that it was a special mailing with sensitive information for a select number of
customers. The information was never meant to be broadcast. (Which I understand where they are coming from.)
I don't understand why J.Crew asked the entry to be removed. It's completely the opposite of the spirit of the message that was "signed" by Mickey Drexler.
ReplyDelete"Let us know what we can do for you, but don't share with anyone else that we sent this to you."
That is what the note accompanying the necklace should have said.
Alexis, what did J.Crew's email say? Can you paste it here for us to see?
auryane, I tried on the Tuesday trench as well and thought that the Dana was just tighter through the shoulders - now looking on the website, I see that they both have the same shirring in the back. If anything, I expected the same big fit in the chest as the Tuesday. I think some other Aficionadas got/tried on this coat as well - would love to hear what you think!
ReplyDeleteAlexis, I'm also disappointed that JC asked you to remove the post but can completely understand why you did so. There does not seem to be any rhyme or reason (at least to us) as to which customers they "appreciate", and once a bunch of Aficionadas get together, we speculate! Hey JC, if you want to appreciate me, try ending final sale for a while. ;)
Did they insist you remove the entire post or just Mickey's email and phone #? I can understand not wanting his # on the blog but the post about the gift made me want to sign up for a JCrew card. Surely it is their intention to draw in new card customers with these promotions
ReplyDeleteCould J Crew have objected to Mickey's number and e-mail being published?
ReplyDeleteI'm sorry they put in you that position, Alexis. It wasn't very fair. But honestly, you did what I would have done, whether or not it feels right.
I'm curious why they haven't asked slastena to take her post down, though.
Alexis:
ReplyDeleteI'm shocked that J Crew has asked you to remove the post. What exactly do you mean by sensitive information - if you can share that with us. I suspect that J Crew might have been swamped with emails today from those who didn't get a gift in the mail, asking 'why not' - so much so that they contacted you. Just a theory. But Wow. Guess this blog is more powerful than even we know!!!
Has anyone bought the Stadium Cloth Bridget? I've been waiting for a sale and am debating between the Stadium and the Tulip coat - both in deep persimmon. I'm a little spoiled because my coats are wool/cashmere and these seem to be just wool. Are they really stiff and scratchy? Also, I can't remember if persimmon is sort of a red-orange or a coral-red.
ReplyDeleteThanks!
Oh, and back to the J.Crew blog post removal - it's just like silver_lining said, makes us wonder which customers J.Crew "appreciates." Would it have been any different if I was out shopping with, say, Slastena and she mentioned that she received a gift, then I inquired from CS or my local sales manager why I didn't receive a gift (as a cardholder of almost 1 year who spends generously)? How would it have been handled? I wonder. Maybe I should bring it up to my local sales manager or drop CS a line to let them know that I'm not feeling "appreciated" and to find out what they "can do for me."
That is BS that they asked you to take it down. I assume they aren't funding or involved with this site at all, so where do they get off asking that. What's next.....take down coupon codes or other info? Seriously, that is crazy.
ReplyDeleteRe: The Necklace (and not that stupid short story I had to read in school!)
ReplyDeleteI don't fully understand why people were so upset that they didn't get necklaces too. I've been home all day, so I read a lot of the posts, and I didn't see Slastena respond to how much she spends at J.Crew. I assumed, therefore, that it was quite a bit. (I could have missed it, though (the amount). I'm not making a judgement about whether she should or shouldn't have disclosed the amount, and I'd like to add that I always enjoy Slastena's posts and info. She seems like a genuninely nice and happy person.) I forget who the poster was who said that she spent around $12,000 (was it that much?) recently and did get a necklace, but that definately gave us an idea as to what people are spending. I KNOW that I am a small potatoes shopper, so I'm not upset at all about not getting anything. Do all of you who are mad about not getting necklaces really spend anywhere close to $12,000 a year at J.Crew?
Also, thanks to everyone who answered my questions on grammar and Garnet Hill.
Now, men, can someone answer my question about how men's knit shirts run?
My dh usually wears an XL in other brands and that what he wears in the jersey polos, tees, and button ups. They are a little full in the waist on him but he can't size down because he needs the extra shoulder room
ReplyDeleteThanks Shannon. I will stick with his regular shirt size then (large), because he also has large shoulders.
ReplyDeleteoh, "his" meaning my husband's.
ReplyDeletesilver_lining: Thank you SO much for this review! I was seriously considering this coat, but have now removed it from my wishlist...I, too, will continue on my quest for a FABULOUS camel coat...too bad the LUCILLE doesn't come in Camel...I would purchase it at full price if it did, and I RARELY do that, as you know. :)
ReplyDeletealexis: Please don't feel bad about your decision to remove the post...you have and ARE doing a FABULOUS job with this blog, and we all appreciate it and YOU so VERY much! Keep up the good work!
Alexis, I seriously doubt you have any legal obligation to comply with JCrew's request that you remove your blog post. It was so nice of you to do it that they ought to send you some jewelry, too!
ReplyDeleteI think the whole thing is very wierd -- like BIG BROTHER is watching you...
Well, I didn't get a necklace, and I HAVE spent over 12k on my J. Crew card in the past year. :(
ReplyDeleteI didn't even mind so much at first, but the "big brother" aspect of the situation now has me peeved.
Okay anon., sorry. My theory is busted.
ReplyDeleteYou must have an awesome wardrobe though!!!
Also, I don't know what the folks at J.Crew said to Alexis (I can't say I'm not curious though!), but she probably did the right thing by taking down the post. We're still talking about the necklace, they're not stopping that. However, I think we will all benefit more if J.Crew is happy with this site and the posters.
ReplyDeleteMB:
ReplyDeleteso funny.:) J Crew did not ask me to remove the post, true. The only speculations I can make is that there is no one reading MY blog.:)LOL! Alexis blog, on other hand, attracts quite a bit of traffic, hence the concern.:)
Oh, well, so much for spreading the joy.
I saw a comment previously posted about someone who emailed J Crew and asked how they determined who got free gifts and got a non-answer, has anyone else asked? I'm thinking of sending an email...
ReplyDeleteMekiki:
ReplyDeletethanks for the nice comment. No, I am not the one who spent 12k in J cRew this year.:)It was someone else.
One more juicy bit of info:
My PS in store had no idea about the "bonus" gift either. So when I told him I received the necklace, thank you very much, you should have seen his perplexed face.:)
We laughed about it and he indulged that SA and PS for the most part are kept in dark re; promos and such. Only upper management echelone is privvy to such "supr secret" info.
Alexis - have they asked you to take down the coupon codes as well?
ReplyDeleteFFM:
ReplyDeleteIn the fevor pitch of the whole necklace debacle I'm going to switch topic and ask your opinion of the soiree jacket in honey glaze? Have I lost my mind? as I sit her sipping wine while the rest of the household is engaged otherwise, or do I like it?
After stalking your polyvore outfits repeatedly, and actually ordering pieces you show, I must get your approval before placing another on line order!!!!!
Hi friends!!
ReplyDeleteSo nice to hear all of the positive remarks coming out of JCrew's request of Alexis to remove the necklace post -- those being how wonderful both this blog is (though I do contemplate if my knee jerk reaction to continuously read the updates throughout the day are becoming addictive ... :) ) and how thorough and professional and helpful Alexis runs this blog! Kudos to her!
And I need some help!! There are a few items I am wanting to purchase, but I am unable to try them on (they are of course fs) so please give me any feedback if you have them or have tried them on!
1. Abstract Rose print dress - does it fit true to size? flattering?!
2. Fiona Herringbone Blazer - fit?
3. Dream Silvie Dress -- I saw some other's posts about fit, my question is, is it worth $100? It is adorable, but it is a sweater dress that can be found anywhere -- is it thin or more full cut of material?
THANKS so much!!
Anon 8:14:
ReplyDeleteSo funny - I find myself checking this blog at work throughout the day - have actually created reasons to 'eat at my desk'! Great Job Alexis!!!
ladolcevita: I am a TRUE fan of the color Honey Glaze, and at one point the Soiree Jacket was on my wishlist UNTIL I saw it in the store in the Heather Silver, and just don't think it's worth the price. It's at $199.99 now and an extra 20% off would make it roughly $161.99 which is A LOT more reasonable a price for it. However, I have to say I would personally wait for the Holiday Rollout to spend the money, or even see if the Soiree' gets marked lower. HTH! Have you had the chance to try it on?
ReplyDeleteAlexis, I am sorry to hear that J. Crew requested that you take down the post... I totally understand your position--- you have a wonderful blog. I do have to chuckle that they stated there was "sensitive information"-- I mean those who received the necklaces WILLINGLY disclosed the information and I am sure that those who did receive a necklace and had to sign a non-disclosure agreement in order to open the box! :) I LOVE JC and probably 90% of my hubby and my clothes come from there-- but I am not about to share what I spend etc as I feel that is a personal matter..... I AM DISAPPOINTED IN JC, as I am sure that they use the information from this blog as to their advantage, but the moment they got "busted" for possibly discriminating their customers-- they claim there is "sensitive information"...... Sorry I am ranting on this, but I am a subject matter expert in NDAs and rights concerning them.... :)
ReplyDeleteWow! Shame on JCrew for asking you to take the necklace post down. I'm disgusted and ready to send them my back my "silver" card and just tell them to keep it. I'm a long-time customer and I spend quite a bit, and I have never received any type of perk...and now they are trying hide the fact that they are giving select customers extras. Here's a thought JCrew why don't you give ALL card holders some REAL perks like free shipping and then EVERYONE would be happy.
ReplyDeleteI'm throwing my thoughts in on the necklace debacle. If JC really reads this blog on a regular basis, then they should be aware of the discussion about the gift cards last month. So, were they really surprised when a discussion about the necklaces showed up? I don't think so.
ReplyDeleteHi FFM! I thought of you when I wrote my review because I know you've said that you have broader shoulders - mine are more narrow and it still didn't fit well. When I reached forward, I felt like the Incredible Hulk about to rip through the back of his shirt!
ReplyDeleteI wish the Astor coat came in camel wool-cashmere... that's a pretty classic silhouette!
Sensitive information is the information they use to discriminate us on services and prices. I have learned that a dozen people around have received the gift. From what I saw, I do not think their sensitive information will be that useful. Maybe Jcrew is using the same IT company which is developing its information systems to do data mining.
ReplyDeleteEveryone: Again, I apologize for the post deletion. (I still feel like I let you all down.) Also, thank you *so much* for understanding my position. I honestly didn't know what to do at the time since I never had a request like that before. (Also, this is the first time J.Crew [excluding emails from me to their regular customer service or the email I sent to Mickey] contacted me.)
ReplyDeleteI should add quickly that the request from J.Crew was politely made. Moreover, J.Crew did request for the entire post to be removed not just a portion of the post's comment.
Oh, noooo!!! Penny disappointing???
ReplyDeleteI was hoping to buy it but my local B&M store doesn't have them in stock-yet.
I have a sweet potato fiona and I kind of like the "boxy" look :)
(not to mention the color)
jcrew is looking for a reason to shut this blog down. If Alexis had not complied with their request they would have moved forward.
ReplyDeleteBTW, it had nothing to do with Mickey's number and email address being published on this blog. He has made it public before.
I am writing this comment Anonymously so that I am not "found out" by the censor police at jcrew.
Ladolcevita:
ReplyDeleteIf I may offer my perspective on Soiree. I indulged and bought the silver heather one when they had 40% off FS. I like it a lot. It fitted TTS for me, wool is plush and warm and it just so pretty with those sparkling buttons. I am a big sucker for sparkles though.
:) This season honey color is amazing, if the store had those, I would have gotten it on a spot. Alas! I did get a good deal on in b/c of larger % off, so you might want to wait untill it is reduced further, depending on how well they are stocked in your size.
How could they shut down a blog that they have nothing to do with? You are talking about them, big deal. What can they do about it? I am new to this blog, but really like it and despite the ranting about JC at times, it gets me interested in different products. They would be doing themselves a disservice to shut it down. (esp since it seems many of their largest shoppers are on here)
ReplyDeleteAlexis, thank you for all that you do!
ReplyDeleteOT: someone had said a couple of weeks ago that CS at the Tampa store was not good. I'm on vacation and had a great CS experience at Tampa today. SAs were friendly and helpful; they assisted me in a placing a red phone order for an item that was sold out. V pleased with this experience.
Alexis, I'm so sorry they asked you to take down the necklace post. I thought of it as such a positive thing. Then again, I received a necklace, but even if I hadn't, I would have been very happy for those who did. Free gifts to loyal customers = makes me happy. Censorship = leaves a very bad taste in my mouth and makes me seriously reconsider my loyalty to J.Crew. My $12K can easily go elsewhere. :(
ReplyDeleteIt is legal for business to be discriminatory. However, it is hard for them to do so. That post might undermine one of jcrew's strategy. I guess, that is the reason, jcrew asked to remove the post.
ReplyDeleteTo me, I did not feel sad that I did not receive the gift. However, I am feeling sorry for jcrew. They are so lack of confidence. They were so afraid of the failure of the effort and had to intervene other people's lives to protect it.
It's no surprise that J.Crew sends different coupons to different people... my mother's email, which is linked to her J.Crew card, receives the "Free Shipping 175+" coupons while my email receives "Free shipping 100+" coupons. I always thought there was something funny going on there.
ReplyDeleteAnd, about the necklace post, I think more people are upset that J.Crew asked for the post to be removed than the rewards gift of one person... I'm not upset at J.Crew for not giving me a gift and for those who did get one, congrats!!! =) But I think their move is coming to bite them in the behind on this blog for the moment.
Chloe
Alexis, please don't feel badly about taking the post down. Your reader's understand. I think any disappoint people are feeling is on the JCrew side.
ReplyDeleteOkay, the more I think about this, the angrier it makes me feel (not at you, Alexis!). Once they sent the necklaces out, their action became public, and this blog gave them a lot of positive publicity for it. I just found myself telling several people about J.Crew asking Alexis to take down the post, which is definitely not good publicity (my friends don't tend to take censorship well either). This has left a really bad taste in my mouth, and I just had yummy mint chip ice cream, too :( :( :(
ReplyDeleteOT: Anyone have or tried on the Greta jacket in either the houndstooth or solid color? Is it true to size? How was the fabric? soft, itchy? Is it lightweight?
ReplyDeleteI like this jacket but haven't seen it at my b&m and would love to try it on before purchasing through the .com. I have broad shoulders and frequently find myself in between sizes at J. Crew.
TIA!
slastena:
ReplyDeleteThanks for encouraging me to purchase the soiree.....If the coupon for an extra twenty percent comes thru tomorrow I'm taking the leap!!!!
sanfranciscoca - Penny is not boxy, I love boxy. Penny is aline/trapeze/swing - in that thick fabric practically very overwhelming. Would probably look cute for maternity, if that gives a better idea of the shape
ReplyDeleteclea26:
ReplyDeleteI ordered the greta in sea salt in a size 8 - I feel it's tts......I love this coat.....It's such a good look but I have to tell you I sent it back only because of the color. I just felt that the sea salt would be so hard to keep clean - But - I've regretted doing that. I think often about re-ordering in sea salt or the houndstooth pumpkin.
I know I'll own the Greta....just a matter of when......
Alexis: For what is worth, I think you did the right thing. Someone--J. Crew in this case--read your blog and saw that something a personal communication had been broadcast across the internet. They asked you to honor the fact that they viewed the communication as private and personal nature of the communication and gift and you showed good judgment and honored that request.
ReplyDeleteIf you think about the gesture and the symbolism inherent in it, it makes sense for the sender to request the deletion. The gift and the note were not sent by e-mail, a notoriously impersonal form of communication. They were sent by mail to someone's home. The gift was jewelry, something that is traditionally considered a personal gift. And the gift included a note from Mickey Drexler and, if I recall, correctly his contact information.
This kind of personal attention to certain customers is consistent with J. Crew's recent move to cultivate a different kind of relationship with its customers. Think about the private sales and personal shoppers/PS sales.
Alexis, its your consistent good judgment that makes this blog work so well. Trust it, even when you can't explain why.
A supporter in Ann Arbor, Michigan
Cleo, this may not be 100% on point as it relates to last year's jacket that as very similar to Greta, but it was a generous fit and I sized down (unlike, for ex, the skimpy, narrow-shouldered Lady Day).
ReplyDeleteladolcevita: grazie! Like you, i think it's a matter of time. :) Did you find the jacket warm? How about the material? soft?
ReplyDeletehexicon: thank you as well.
Unfortunately, I always seem to have to order two sizes, and sometimes I am unlucky ending up between sizes. Either i have my choice of tight across the shoulders or wide through the torso. If i'm in love with a piece, i usually chose wide bodice. :)
Anger not being good for me (or anyone), I've decided to cheer myself up by sending my necklace to someone else. To the first person who can post a fun joke and cheer us all up, the necklace is yours! (and I'll even cover shipping)
ReplyDeleteweab: I am so glad that you had the same thoughts about the Penny as I did. I was beginning to think that maybe I should try it again, but I am pretty sure that it was too boxy. My DH was there and he said the same thing, and was also disappointed because he knew how much I wanted it. I hope it sticks around to go on sale!
ReplyDeleteAlexis: Don't feel bad about deleting the post. You were in a difficult position. I just hope that you and other aficionadas won't be discouraged from posting such things in the future :)
Does any one have any insight on the ABSTRACT ROSE PRINT DRESS?!!!
ReplyDeleteFit!? More then just business use? Flattering on?! Please post if you have any suggestive help!! THANKS!! I know someone out there has tried it on!! And always helpful, always insightful, always fashionable FFM !?!?!
: )
My 4yo favorite joke is:
ReplyDeleteWhat does a teddy bear say after dinner
I'm stuffed!
Isn't sad that is the only joke I know LOL
This isn't a joke, but I know the teachers will appreciate it. I have a student who continues to sleep in class. When I wake her up, her response is that she already knows how to do it. Well, she made a 19 on her test today. Do you think she knew how to do it? It's more sad than funny, but it is true.
ReplyDeleteI laughed when I read your post, so you get my vote. Plus, the shipping would be free! :D
P.S. I can't think of any way J.Crew could have this blog shut down based on that post. Don't be afraid of that :)
ReplyDeleteWhat did the zero say to the eight?
ReplyDeleteNice belt.
kristen, I love it! :P
ReplyDeleteI am very funny with the jokes:
ReplyDeleteI only remember the last one I was told. And the last one was unfortunately a gross Poughkeepsie joke from "Sex and the city." Would not care to elaborate much.:)
Kitchy7: Such a nice gesture on your part
Here's 2 attempts:
ReplyDelete1. Considering the state of the economy/jobs, we are all still lucky to be spending money on our favorite obsession - J. Crew.
2. What do you call cheese that's not yours? "Nacho cheese"
Alexis: I discovered your blog just recently and I was relieved to find out I wasn't the only person who is obsessed with J Crew. Thank you for running it :)
ReplyDeleteOn another note: I am sad to admit that what makes me a loyal J Crew customer is their unique design and not the "perks" I get as a J Crew card holder (cause there aren't too many). My fiancee gets gift cards in addition to free shipping as a GAP/BR/Old Navy credit card holder (I am posting this because of the whole necklace issue).
It's no wonder JCG keeps plunging
:((
Anon @9:29: thanks for the Penny jacket review! I guess I'll have to wait to try it on in a store instead of ordering it online after reading all your reviews. Weab is right, it had every potential to become a "classic" :(
Good night all! This teacher must get to bed. :)
ReplyDeleteMy favorite joke is a math joke: The problem states: "Find x." The student circles the "x" and writes "here it is." I laugh every time I think about it!!!
Math teacher: it is hysterical, so funny!
ReplyDeleteI hope there will be no more jokes( or at least not as funny), or I'll forget yours.:)
Logic is a strong asset, what can say!
The Nacho one made me lol :D
ReplyDeleteMaybe the joke is on jcrew, now that we are all "in the know"
ReplyDeleteKitchy, I missed it, why are you angry?
ReplyDeleteI don't want the necklace, but I do have a funny story. My brother told me that his new boss called him into her office and asked him if he knew anything about Wicca (sp?). He said he really didn't know what to say. Thoughts of naked women dancing in the moonlight went through his mind. He said "you mean like witches?"
It turns out she meant wiki (as in wikipedia. Please excuse my spelling.)
Hahaha. Well done Shannon! Email me your address at kitchy7@gmail and I'll ship you the necklace. :)
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure if you mean the abstract rose strapless dress or the suit-like wool flannel dress. I have both of them.
As for the strapless dress, I received it today and just tried it on. It has a built in bra with a firm elastic strap and actual bra straps in back, which are hidden underneath the outside fabric. That's the first time I've seen a strapless dress this supportive, which I think is great. The fabric itself is incredibly soft, almost buttery, and of course the print is beautiful. Also, I tend to go up a size in strapless dresses so I don't get a skin puff in the upper chest/arm area, and that worked fine with this dress (I think it runs a tiny bit small).
As for the wool flannel dress, I bought it for more professional events like those awkward stand-around-and-mingle events. I would also wear it to dinner with my parents or boyfriend or to a slightly dressier wedding that I wouldn't want to wear a fun dress to. The fit is extremely flattering, doing a great job of hiding my hips and tummy.
Hope this helps!
Alexis: I think your blog is amazing and you took a difficult situation and did the right thing. Now YOU should be rewarded with a necklace!!!! Are you reading this J.Crew?? This woman does more for your business than any catalog and she complied with your request. Send HER a necklace for goodness sakes!!!!
ReplyDeleteRe: the abstract rose strapless dress, I didn't say this very well -- the dress doesn't have bra straps, like the kind that go over your shoulders, but it has a nice elastic band that goes under your bustline and leads to a hook/closure thing in the back, like a bra does. Then you zip up the dress over it. Clever!
ReplyDeleteI hope that my disclosing the amount that I spend yearly at J Crew had nothing to do with the removal of the post about the necklace. I responded when anon asked if anyone who received the necklace would be willing to share how much money they spend at J Crew. I estimated my yearly amount runs around 20K. I also added that one reason I spend such a whopping amount is because J Crew is the only clothing brand that I wear (I just always feel like I look so fashionable!) While I probably would NOT have posted about getting the necklace if someone hadn't posted first, I don't think that J Crew has the right to ask you to remove anything from your blog. Kudos to you, however, for taking the high road and complying with their wishes. :)
ReplyDeleteKitchy 7:
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for your input! I was asking about the suiting version of the dress (not the strapless). The pattern itself is quite unique and then the dark suiting fabric for the rest of the dress makes a nice compliment. I think I will purchase it for "go to situations" which require something understated, but equally elegant!
Thank you again!
I echo jcrewjunkie -- I also listed what I'd spent in recent months in response to a question asking about that info, and I hope that didn't tip J.Crew over the edge. But then again, my boyfriend and the Obama staffers who live with me see all the J.Crew boxes that come through the door (even when I try to hide the sheer number!), so they (along with friends I shop with) know how much I spend and that I received a necklace....maybe I should tell them all to forget all of that because it's now been deemed sensitive information. The whole thing is just so weird. Why tempt negative publicity among your most loyal customers?
ReplyDeleteBad me -- I'm in a good mood now! And math teacher, your 'x is here' joke is hilarious. :)
kitchy7- Happy day!! I can't thank you enough for passing on the necklace to me. You are sweetheart! I am a ribbon addict, so the ribbon and bead design is right up my ally :D
ReplyDeleteRE: the abstract rose wool flannel dress fit- i tried on the the watercolor version, it fit pretty tts but in the chest was slightly blousy (i am a B-C cup). very nice/flattering. i would've bought it if the silk allover watercolor printed dress wasn't such a great deal (59.99 + 40% off 2 wks ago). i got that one instead!
ReplyDeleteI am an attorney (though not an IP attorney). Here's my take on the requested post removal:
ReplyDeleteJC could not legally force Alexis to remove the post per se, but this blog uses a lot of j.crew owned images and logos, so if they wanted to get nasty they could legally force her to stop using such things on the blog. So essentially they can't stop the discussion here, but they could make life difficult for Alexis in terms of her blog layout and image content.
Coats: I like Dani. I've never been to a JCrew outlet b4, should I look there for this particular one? Any other coat similar to Dani that someone would recommend??? :)
ReplyDeleteP.S. love the "x is here" joke, made me laugh out loud :D

ReplyDeleteI don't see how different customer treatments equates discriminatory. It's not like they are mistreating people based on an inherited characteristics such as race and gender. Anyone can feel free to spend or not spend on J Crew merchandise.
ReplyDeleteReally no different than getting better service from a waiter when you tip him well.
Anyway, I don't hear that they are being mean on their request. Thank you Alexis on running this blog. I find the information here invaluable. If J Crew is reading this blog, they should know that it really makes people spend more, not less.
Guess I've been in the wrong couple of threads all day long and missed this one. What's really, really interesting about The Necklace (News and Resulting Post, Which Got Removed By Request of JC) is that I was more offended about not receiving a $25 or $50 thank you card when those went around. I wasn't offended at all by the necklace and envisioned myself receiving one in the mail. Given that I am not a cardmember, I know I won't receive one.
ReplyDeleteHowever, my point -- and I have one - is that convinced me that I should open a JC card. We've been going on about how bad the card benefits are and I was completely disinterested. A necklace was the tipping point for my opeining a new card. I've spent $5k+ via debit card over the past few months. I can imagine my spending would double on a credit card. Sad to admit, but true.
I liked reading the attorney perspective. There may have been some legal concerns for them in some way. Someone is always quick to sue about something.
Attorney here again. A suit would probably be for an injunction to stop the use of images/logo, not for money damages. However, JC would have to balance that against super bad publicity of seemingly punishing a blog run and frequented by some of its biggest fans.
ReplyDeleteAs far a discrimination, earlier poster was right, there is no actionable discrimination b/c it is not discrimination against a protected class (i.e. race or gender). Just a marketing decision, which of course can alienate certain customers when it becomes publicized.
The folks at J Crew must be sniffing a little too much Wite-Out. This blog provides a lot of FREE (read: FFFRRREEEEE) advertising for J Crew!!! You can't buy this kind of "chatter". The comments on this site are overwhelmingly positive. I've been encouraged to buy items based on positive reviews. I live overseas so all of my shopping is online and I depend of the reviews of all of you. The advice has been honest and accurate. Shame on you J Crew!! Boooo
ReplyDeleteI understand JC position, people who have received the gift should not have have said anything, it was just like the gift cards last month, people who have not received it got upset and thinking it is their god given right to get the benefit, because they spend x amount of $ at JC. I don't spend alot of money at JC and even if I did I would not advertise it.
ReplyDeleteGiven the fact people are losing their homes, and a losing a pant load of money on the stock market this really is a trival matter.
No matter what JC does they can't win, somone will always complain no matter what.
Like Kitchy 7 Censorship leaves a bad taste in my mouth.
ReplyDeleteAlexis made the decision she thought was best. She had to follow her heart.
I would not have removed it b/c I am really against censorship.
I am disappointed in JCrew. This really makes me not want to shop with them anymore...or at least take a break.
I spend over $15,000 a year at JCrew and have had their credit card since early 2004. I have never gotten a perk in the mail.
WoW! I am just catching up on this thread and can't beleive the posts! Alexis, you were right to remove it. It's what you had to do. No complaints here.
ReplyDeleteHowever, that being said, if J. Crew didn't want to make other cardholders angry, they should send gifts to EVERYONE, not just a select few. It's just WRONG! it gives a feeling of "favoritism"-like, "what, am I not good enough of a customer?" It just leaves a really bad taste in my mouth.
And, in this economy, do you really want to be alienating cutsomers?
BGD
Oh and also..if it was supposed to be "private"...why would they send something the gift recipient would WEAR for all the world to see? WOuldn't they hope that the gift recipient would wear it, say where it came from, and then mention that they received it as a gift from J.Crew? it's all free marketing for them!
ReplyDeleteIt just doesn't make any sense to me.
BGD
bgd, I agree with everything you said except: Why did Alexis have to remove it? According to the two lawyers comments she did not have to...
ReplyDeleteIf it were my blog I would not have removed it b/c I have very strong feelings and opinions when it comes to censorship.
However, Alexis did what she thought was best and that is fine...one has to do what feels right to them.
Everyone: Thanks again for your kind words and understanding my position- I honestly do appreciate it. :)
ReplyDeletekitchy7: It is extremely nice of you to give your necklace to another Aficionada. :) This is another example why the members of this blog are so fantastic!!! :)
Also, I *love* the jokes/stories posted here. I was smiling through all of them while reading. They are so simple and clever at the same time- well done!!! :)
Welcome to the blogosphere JCrew! Take the bad with the good. They seem to be reaping the benefits of this blog, I know many of us purchase more because of aficionada reviews and great advice. JC totally s*cks for overstepping their bounds as a retailer. They are like a fly-on-the-wall in a room full of men/women, outside of JC's property, listening-in to the conversation. The internet is free. JC is welcome to eavesdrop but if people can publish crude, rude images and words for our children to easily come across, then a bunch of customers can surely chat about their favorite store. Boo JCrew! Censorship!! Plus!, JC knows the blogs exist so they HAD to know SOMEONE would say something about it!
ReplyDeleteMaybe card holder's will receive "Secret, just between-you-and-us" gifts in the future. Or, "IF...the others only knew...".lol
There was another JC blog around last year, and the owner blogged about receiving a gift at Christmas time from Mickey, w/the phone #, etc., like Slastena's card. The traffic on the other JCrew site was extremely light compared to Alexis' site. I don't think the gifts are anything new.
Alexis: you're like, a SUPERSTAR!
What's funny is I read this blog, then I peruse other JC blogs and Polyvore for updates. Most Aficionada's quite possibly would have found the post about the necklace eventually, even if Alexis hadn't posted it here.
Sorry for the long post but initially I felt some aggravation about the censorship...this is still America isn't it?
Anony@8:42 I agree with you completely on the Censorship thing.
ReplyDeleteI have very strong beliefs about censorship. So strong that I am seriously reconsidering how I feel about shopping at JCrew....yes, that strong!
Alexis, again sorry for all the drama you are going through surrounding the "necklace'..... Just wanted to let you know that I sent an email to J. Crew and I mentioned to "tell jenna lyons that I love the designs and cannot wait for the holiday collection" and I was impressed to find a response from her in my email this morning that my email was fwd'ed to her..... I agree with those who post that J. Crew cound not pay for the information that we speak of in this blog (both good and bad)....... J. Crew, we know you are watching-- I think that all we are asking is some consistency on policies and incentives! :)
ReplyDeleteMaybe the necklace thing was a test to see if it would increase spending in those who received it. That would explain why some heavy spenders got it and others didn't. Would also explain why they wanted it hushed, in case it was truly trying to be some sort of research on it's effect on spending. That would be scewed if they other group knew. Still don't agree with censorship, but would explain it.
ReplyDeleteI would like to say that I have a JC Credit Card and between my husband and myself we spent in excess of 25k at JC last year. I received the necklace and I am so disgusted with JC that I can't even bring myself to wear it. I think I will probably put it on ebay.
ReplyDeleteAnd as far as spending at JC goes, I have only spent $400 in the last 3 months combined due to the website fiasco, declining quality of items, and lack of customer service that I receive when visiting my B&M. I am so fed up w/ JC that I am taking my business elsewhere.
Two things: J Crew, dear Mickey -- please offer the Thinsulate option on more coats for women! I buy several of them every year because I wear one all day long while at work during fall and winter. I am a newspaper reporter, I'm in and out of my office, my car and public buildings, I'm fairly thin and I'm always freezing here in Joliet, Ill.!!! So I walk around in coats all the time. Please, more coats with Thinsulate!
ReplyDeleteAs to the necklace, I thought that was interesting that J Crew gave out a free gift. I didn't care at all that I didn't get one. I mean, it would be nice, but I'm not jealous that I didn't get one. Many, many people spend more money than I do at J Crew; For heaven's sake, there's nothing wrong with giving certain people a gift! And frankly, I wish I could spend more money there. On the other hand, Mickey, people always ask me about my clothes -- would you sponsor my wardrobe? I'm out in public all the time ... It would be free advertising. I'm just kidding, of course!
Oh, and one more thing. Someone just told me about a Web site -- I think it was archives.com. I wish I was more certain of the address. Anyway, you can bring up old Web pages by using the "way back machine" feature. So it would be easy to find the deleted thread, I would think. Though I feel silly mentioning this. I'm not the most computer-savvy person in the world, by far!

ReplyDeleteI hope people are calm enough to understand that in this economy, any company can go under very fast.
ReplyDeleteThis is kind of all blown up. J Crew politely asked to remove a blog, and Alexis was gracious enough to do so. They probably think that those who did not receive the necklace resent not getting one, or that they call volume will go up.
If people get mad and not buy, and J Crew go under, the rest of us addicts will have to find other places to buy our clothes. Believe me - I shopped around (Ann Taylor, Anthropologie, Martin & Osa, Nordstrom, even Talbots). None compare to J Crew in terms of quality, style (different without being way out there and yet not boring), and price.
You guys complain about the price, but have you seen prices of clothes in countries in Europe??? Do you know that most designer shoes made in Italy are $300+?
I don't work or are affliated with J Crew, but for selfish reasons I want them to stick around as much as possible (or until I am too old to wear their clothes). No other designers get me so many compliments or make me feel so good.
Alexis,
ReplyDeleteI just hope they send you a necklace and a gift card for all of this :)
I actually just received this coat today. I am a petite girl. 5'1 and I usually get a zero petite in jackets but had to order this in a zero since it is not offered in petite. After reading this review I was nervous since I had already ordered the coat. So, I even went ahead and placed another order for the Plaza coat as well and received that today too. I can say that the Plaza and the Dana coat have pretty much the same fabric (I ordered both in heather charcoal). The Dana is just much more thick and warm. I did not experience the fit issues stated above but that just might be me. I think it fits very well. It is a bit larger than the Plaza (in arm length and length overall)since I ordered the Plaza in petite 0. I am having a really hard time picking between the two because I am only keeping one. And stated before it came very nicely presented. With the cedar balls, box and everything. The Plaza did not.
ReplyDeletedeb
ReplyDeleteI just returned the Dana coat today for the same exact reason - too tight in the shoulder and quite voluminous on the bottom (almost like a dress)
The coat design and color is beautiful and attractive.
ReplyDelete
