I am just wondering how these cords run as far as sizing is concerned. Also, which seem to be the most flattering...bootcut or matchstick?
ReplyDeleteI tried using RCLK earlier today, and it was not working online. I called J.Crew, and they informed me the coupon can only be applied by a call center representative.
ReplyDeleteAlso, the representative who helped me out was very friendly, but she insisted that the final sale is not really over. According to her, as long as it ends in .99, it is final sale. I asked her to check that information, and, after consulting someone else, she confirmed it. So, beware.
Vivi: Thanks for the heads up on the RCLK code and the final sale situation! :)
ReplyDeleteHave you heard about the new cashmere wash they have? I went to a j.crew store in nyc to see it and it smells amazing!
ReplyDeleteAnonymous 8:19. I am more apple shapped meaning I carry my weight in the middle and have small legs. Saying that, I LOVE the matchstick cords. The bootcut are too baggy on me but I really wanted the aubergine (thanks to FMM's polvore set) so I am having the boot cut taken in. Hope that helps!
ReplyDeleteAlso I just received an e-mail from Banana Republic and they have %40 off all reg priced dresses. I have to say cheers to BR, they are offering wonderful sales!
Hi Anon at 8:31AM: If you are interested, there is a post about the wash "J.Crew Cashmere Wash {will you get it?}" :)
ReplyDeleteThats FFM not FMM. Sorry, haven't had coffee yet:-)
ReplyDeleteJust to let cashmere/wool lovers know...my machine has a special woolmark approved cycle...it recommends using DREFT. I have done this and my sweaters turned out great. DREFT is what I used on my daugther's clohtes when she was a baby. I always liked the smell and it is much less expensive...if you have extra cash and want to try the JCrew wash--great! But I would rather spend my extra $ on clothes:)
ReplyDeleteI didn't get this email so thanks! I bought several pair last year so probably will pass this year...gotta love JCrew's cords though...I usually wait for end of the year sales and get them for $19.99:)
ReplyDeleteThanks for the heads up! I am going to see if I can get this price applied to my waitlisted faded cement matchstick cords.
ReplyDeleteOn another note, I got an email today saying Revolve (the online retailer) is offering $75 off of a $250 purhcase with the code COSZMYINONHA. Can you imagine of J.Crew had a coupon like this???
vivi,
ReplyDeleteThat is totally dishonest on JCrew's part if it is true that final sale is not over...Isn't that false adverstising? JCrew is really leaving a bad taste in my mouth...How dishonest! MAD! :(
I just ordered two winter coats from Dorothy Perkins...free shipping on 40 order AND 20% off! I am so excited:) One coat is a purple/tan plaid with ruffles all down the front and even trim on the shoulders...I about swooned when I saw it:)
ReplyDeleteAnon @ 819: I am somewhere between a 0 and 2 in most of j.crew's skirts & pants. I tried on a 26, 27 in matchstick and a 2, 0 in bootcut, and none of them fit me. I love the colors this year, but I don't want to settle for something that fits less than perfect.
ReplyDeleteAnon @ 8:19: I tried on a pair of matchstick cords for the first time a couple weekends ago and they did NOT work for me, but this is probably just because of my body type. I have fairly athletic thighs from years of weighlifting and sports, and they just didn't look good at all. i'm jealous of those who can pull it off...they are a cute fit!
ReplyDeletehowever! the bootcut cords are fantastic on me. They're definitely better if you need extra room in the thigh area. I might be taking advantage of this offer...
I love the matchstick cords and have bought pairs for the past two years. But I am short -- only 5 feet tall. And though I am a size 2or 4, I don't have teeny-tiny stick legs. I have thighs and (to my dismay) a butt. This year, those pants just don't fit me. The lovely people working in the Orland Park, Ill., store told me that those pants are somehow cut differently this year. But I still love them -- and the fact that they don't fit has sent me straight to dietville. I do need to lose 6 pounds. I think they are really slim in the the thin, small in the butt and there's something with the pockets -- maybe they are too large? At least for me? It's hard to explain. But I love those pants!
ReplyDeleteIn fact -- and sorry to go on and on -- none of the cords fit me well, and I was really upset about it. I don't have to dress up for my job, I'm outdoors a lot, and because of work, I sometimes have to walk in winter through muddy fields or across interstates. So I need durable, warm pants that are casual -- this year, I seem to be out of luck, at least so far. Dietville ...
ReplyDeleteI think those CSRs re: final sale didn't get the memo. Supposedly JC was removing final sale to encourage holiday shopping. In any event, if it doesn't say final sale when you purchase it, (like it doesn't now on the website)--they can't enforce that.
ReplyDelete(OT, I changed my profile pic in honor of the feather shoes post from yesterday. ;) )
Could someone who owns Matchsticks, jeans or cords, from 2 years ago or 1 year ago, explain how these older cuts fit?
ReplyDeleteThis year, they are skinnies. I tried them on and they are skinnies. IMO, it makes them less special-skinnies can be found anywhere.
From reviews I've read of older ones, they used to be more of a stovepipe, (15-16" at the knee and ankle) cut. Now, unless you have birdie legs, they suck in at the calf.
Also, yes, does anyone know how the trouser-cut cords fit? Are they like the favorite-fit trousers?
ReplyDeleteAnd also, I think it's kind of weird that items are still final sale, even though it doesn't say anywhere that it is! I almost ordered something this morning but now I hesitate because I was worried about the fit. If I can't return it, I don't want to take the risk and buy it. :)
For me, the matchsticks of 2006 and 2007 were somehow more wearable. They were slim and low cut and very narrow at the leg opening. But you didn't have to be a 90-pound 16-year-old girl to wear them. The ones this year seem to be too tight all over. And they don't fit right in the rear and the thigh. They're too binding -- like really inexpensive pants from, say, Forever 21. I never can fit into their pants.
ReplyDeleteI am not too concerned that the items I ordered today are, in fact, final sale items. I believe (I hope) that the customer service representative was incorrect about that. But I do not know.
ReplyDeleteI would let you know if my customer receipt is marked as final sale or not, but it takes two to three weeks to get my packages.
I would love to hear, though, if others who ordered post-final sale are receiving items marked as final sale.
Cass--it just won't be the same with a cat replacing your glamorous picture:) So funny but never knew that I so quickly identified with people based on that pic-like Gigi, slastena and yourself!
ReplyDeleteI love the matchsticks and the bootcut both this year and last. I do not think the matchsticks are tight to the calf like skinnies--not at all. Skinnies are like leggings (yuk) and these really are not so do not be afraid of that. They really are both styles very flattering but I agree it depends on the body type. The bootcut will probably work on just about anyone versus the matchstick.
The colors are great and the fabric is really comfy. I think they run big-IMO I had to size down in both and strangely could go down even another size in the matchstick if I wanted a very tight fit...no thanks. I sized down just one size.
BTW-it is not FS sale and they cannot expect anyone to order right now with no returns--it is clearly not FINAL SALE. Do not worry--even if it were--your store will return them if there is a major fit problem. It only makes sense. Really bad that the reps didn't get the message and are telling people this.
To Anon @ 11:20:
ReplyDeleteI have the matchstick jeans from a year or two ago and they fit pretty loose on the leg, not as loose at the bootcut, but definitely not as tight as skinnies. Hope that helps!
Thanks to al that commented on older and newer matchsticks. I had heard the older ones were sleeker and less snug. Now I'll have to haunt ebay looking for an older pair.
ReplyDeleteLong-time reader, first time commenting. LOVE this blog!
ReplyDeleteI am tempted to buy a pair of the cords in the bright pink color (not sure what the actual JCrew name is...) but have no idea what I would wear them with. I usually pair skinny jeans with either knee high boots and a turtleneck or flip flops and a tank or tee in the summer.
Any suggestions???
L
I am a "skinny pear", and the matchsticks don't fit me at all. They squish my butt and it looks awful. The bootcuts don't look quite right, either. They give me a muffin top. It's too bad 'cause I LOVE all the beautiful colors they come in (except for the screaming loud pink!). I keep going back to the store and re-trying both fits, thinking I'll get lucky. duh...
ReplyDeleteBeware--they are bright--but I tried them on and they are fun! I had to get out of the small dressing room as the reflection in the mirror was blinding! I am 40--I just didn't think I could pull them off. On the other hand, they look so cute with simple black turtleneck, slate grey hammered silk with jackie over it and tall boots. Keep it simple--the pants will do enough on their own;)
ReplyDeletecovert5--lol, I changed it to a pic of my cat since I learned yesterday that many of us on here have feline friends. Perhaps I will change it back later. The headshot was from when I did some (small-time) modeling in law school. I was a what they call a "plus-size" model (i.e. normal size woman). ;)
ReplyDeleteI really like the bootcut cords this year. They seem better made than in some years past, so I picked up another pair. And the cut is very flattering if you have curves. :-)
ReplyDeleteOT-does anyone have regal violet. It shows up so blue and I thought it was more purple with bluer undertones. Can someone clarify--also does it look great with watercolor lydia? Trying to decide between merino crystal button which is longer style (I have many jackies but no longer cardi styles). Should I go with longer for a change or is it not as wearable?? Opinions please:)
ReplyDeleteCovert5,
ReplyDeleteI didn't like they way the Jackie looked with the watercolor Lydia. It was too fitted. I would go with a looser-fit cardigan, like the new merino ones with the pretty button. But, they don't come in the purple color. I'm interested to know what other people are wearing with the watercolor Lydia. The regal purple in a bluish-purple. In fact, regal purple in different shirts looks different. It isn't a realy violet color. I think both regal purple and violet would look good with this shirt, but maybe regal purple better.
I'll second the opinion that the matchstick cords from yesteryear were less skinny cords than just slimmer-cut pants. I'm a 10-12 in pants and I love my matchsticks, albeit they were from 2006/2007. I'd love the blue ones they have, but I can't justify the purchase right now even with $10 off.
ReplyDeleteWent into my B&M in New Haven yesterday to try on to City Fit Cord Trousers in Chocolate. They were still full price ($89.50) there. I definitely needed them in Petite, so I used the Red Phone and ordered them that way. HOWEVER the CS rep was aware that the cords were now on sale so she gave me that discount (plus the 15% educators that I requested) BUT she was about to charge me shipping because the cords were not full price now. I mentioned that I didn't think I should pay the shipping charge since the cords were still full price in the store. She graciously deducted shipping and I left a happier (and poorer) customer.
ReplyDeleteOMG If FS is not over I am going to have some major issues. I bought the Andie bag in charcoal this morning for my b-day but I wanted to compare it to a Lambertson Treux bag that I also bought. I wanted to see the Andie IRL and figured if I didn't like it I would send it back. It ended in .99 so I guess I'm stuck with it even if I pick the Lambertson bag.
ReplyDeleteAnon 1:14 Try the City Fit Luxe Cord Trouser. I bought a pair in the dark choc and I love them. I have a really hard time w/ pants at JC for some weird reason. I'm petite and the trouser cords are very flattering. The City Fit is a little less baggy on me than the Fav Fit. Fav Fit anything always looks like it is swallowing me but I think it's b/c I'm petite and small boned. The trousers are slightly dressier but still pretty casual since they are cord material. Only down side is that there aren’t as many fun colors!
ebay: Rose T-shirt creme color with black flower bidding only at $5.50!
ReplyDeleteI tried on the city fit trouser cords and LOVE them! I do wish they came in short as they are several inches too long. I don't have heels high enough - I'd have to have them hemmed. That said, $10 off is still not enough for me. I'm just hoping they still have some in my size when they get marked down more. I also bought a pair of matchstick cords this year - first time I've ever tried them on. I like them, and will be buying more - again when they're marked down. I haven't tried on the bootcut this year, but I have several pair from past years and like them.
ReplyDeleteRegal violet is a strange color - not purple or blue. If you hold it up next to a blue item, it looks purple; if you hold it up next to a purple item, it looks blue. I do love the color, just not sure how to describe it!
ReplyDeleteThe website is still down.
ReplyDeleteRegal Purple = Royal Blue
ReplyDeleteRe cords, I still scour eBay for the 2005 dream bootcut cords because they fit my hourglass/pear figure perfectly.
ReplyDeleteLast year's matchsticks were more like straight-legs, in my opinion. Not as flattering on me as the dream stretch cords. I found this year's matchsticks unwearable--they grabbed at my hips and gave me a nasty muffin top (even though I'm fairly trim).
On a related note, how skinny are this year's matchstick jeans? I have a pair from either last year or the year before, and again, they are almost more of a straight leg than a skinny leg. I have skinny shanks so a straight leg practically looks bootcut on me.
Hexicon: I thought you said you had already tried this years matchstick cords on and they were unwearable? or did you mean another style of cords?
ReplyDeleteThe matchstick jeans are a straight leg I would say. They are straight from the knee down to the ankle; they do not taper.
ReplyDeleteAnon @5:53: it was the matchstick cords I found unwearable due to the muffintop issue--which of course may just be my figure. I haven't tried on this year's bootcut cords.
ReplyDeleteIt was the denim matchstick jeans I was wondering about--the pair I have from last year weren't really all that "matchstick-y," in the lower leg. I was wondering if this year's jeans were a true skinny leg.
And there's my answer--thanks anon at 6:55

ReplyDeletecovert5 - I also identify w/the user pics here. Where is your avatar?
ReplyDeleteI might be in the minority, but I tried on a pair of the mathstick cords for the first time the other day and I loved them! I thought the legs were just right- not too tight and not too loose, and I thought my but looked good which is always a plus! :) I had to get a short length because the regular was too long. I got them in the chocolate brown.
ReplyDeleteGigi-
ReplyDeleteI am clueless--that's where mine is:0)
CREWBIE^My thoughts exactly but it does depend on body type with matchsticks...oh and don't forget that EVERY pair fits different. You must TRY THESE IN MULTIPLE SIZES and I honestly bought 6 DIFFERENT white denim matchsticks in regular and long this summer and they ALL fit different.
OOPS, I meant you must try more than one even once you determine your size. But now that I think about it, I have bought 27, 28 and 29! SO maybe multiple pieces of the same size and style and then multiple, well, you get the picture.
ReplyDeleteI keep repeating..J Crew sizing, they just keep ya guessing.
JCrew's new opening page...talk about begging for sales! Almost $40 for a tissue turtleneck is NOT cheap to me! Yes, if I really wanted one I can afford one but please don't "rip me off"....I got very nice tissue turtlnecks at Kohl's for $9 last weekend and the white one I bought last year is still going strong.
ReplyDeleteWith the economy people I know are looking for nice but inexpensive basics...
I find the tissue turtleneck is worth it for $39.00, not trying to create an argument here but it is an item that you can get alot of wear out of, dress it up or down and it washes great. My experience with the cheaper ones is that they don't last after a couple of washes (and I wash in cold water and hang dry). I agree the price is steep, but I also look at how many times and ways that I can wear the item to see if it warrants paying the price.
ReplyDeleteI purchased the light green and red cords tonight. They're FS in stores, but i thought they were pretty cute (they were 39.99 w/ 30% off). Anyone have any thoughts as to what would look nice with them? I have some really cute clothes this fall, and I am sometimes really inept at putting outfits together! I always wish I looked more pulled together! Any ideas would be great. TIA
