Madewell Email: Deep. Dark. Dramatic.

Madewell sent an email about their latest denim shade: true black. The email's subject line of "Deep. Dark. Dramatic." made me smile a bit, because it was a bit dramatic in of itself. ;) Although that look featured in the image of the email looks great on the model, I wonder how many regular customers (like myself) can pull that look off? (In my case, I know I couldn't pull it off. My pear frame body would not look good in those pants- even though they are quite pretty!) ;)

The email also reminds us {again} that if you join their Facebook page (click here) you can receive 15% off your next purchase (either at stores or orders over the phone).

What are your thoughts on the look in the email? Do you like that outfit? Would you wear it?

  1. I LOVE the Leather Military Jacket and could see myself wearing it, but probably not the rest of the look. :)

  2. I really like the black matchstick jeans. The booties are nice but I would not wear them with those jeans. I think with a pair of nice tall boots those pants would be great.

  3. OT, but can anyone review the Penny jacket or the Carrie coat? I am 5'4" and 120 pounds so I especially appreciate the comment of anyone around my height and size 2-4. I am especially concerned about how bulky the fabric in the Penny jacket is.

    Thanks!

I love the military jacket and the pants (uh..those skinny pants would be too tight on me thou. I have thick running thighs :( I would prefer wearing something high heel boot or black lucie high heels...

  5. J. Crew size 8 (I normally wear a 6 or 8 in other brands) fits me well in the dresses and skirts (and shoes!) and a medium fits well for sweaters, etc. But the couple of times I've ordered pants in size 8 they have not come close to fitting (way too small).

Does any one else have this problem with J Crew pants??

  6. I love the Military Jacket and actually called to get more info on it. It was kind of strange. They didn't know when it would be available or the price. I wanted to know how the collar looks since you can't see it in the picture. They didn't know. She said she would email me with more info on the jacket when they got the information themselves. Strange.

  8. Re: Pant sizing

It depends on the cut of the pant. I normally wear an 8 in the city fit, but I wear a 6 in the favorite fits. Except for the Keaton pant that just did so many wrong things to me.

  9. Re: pant sizing......I am just the opposite. I wear a 6 in the city fit and an 8 in the favorite fit...

    All depends on body type.

Since the city fit is lower on the waist I have to size down.

  10. I also can wear a size smaller in city fit versus favorite fit pants... i have pretty narrow hips and can get away with a 4 in city fit, but since the favorite fit goes higher (and curves in as it moves up) i size up to a 6 in that cut. i also find that casual pants (chinos, cords) can run larger than dress pants (lined wool)- i wear a 4 in fav fit cords but a 6 in fav fit wool pants.

  11. I got an email from JCrew this morning about new sale arrivals online and in stores. When I checked the site, the sale section looks pretty much the same.

  12. kitsmommy - I love the Carrie coat. However, I decided against it because of the collar. I am 5'2," 120 and a 34C. I usually wear a 4 or 6P. I fit the 4 just fine but I am sure it looked too big. As you know, they do not have petites in the stores, so I haven't tired it. That said, I highly recommend getting a size P in the Carrie if you usually wear P or can wear P. I think you fit in that category. The sleeves will be too long if you get a regular size. There are 2 rows of stitching on the sleeve that add a nice detail. If you had to hem the sleeves, that would be lost or it would be more money to recreate those stitches. As far as weight. It's definitely a coat. I think the collar can be pressed down, but it is inclined to stand up, as pictured. I want an ivory coat and didn't makeup rubbing on the collar since it sit around my face. Maybe the collar would be smaller on the petite, but it still might frame the face. HTH

    Haven't tried the Penny.

I ordered the Carrie in a 0P. I'm 5'2 & "110 and I wanted to get a P so that the sleeve length wouldn't be too long. I asked CS and they advised me to go petite. I haven't gotten the coat in the mail yet but I will let you know how it fits.

  16. Kitsmommy:
I ordered Penny jacket in 4 and it was HUGE. I am normally 4. Once I received it ( mine was white), I really was not thrilled with it. It sat in my closet for a week, I was debating with myself whether I should re-order it in 2, and decided against it at the end. For once, it's cold here now, so I am more in a need of a coat/peacoat vs jacket; secondly, I just could not figure out many ways to wear it , personally.
It's too dressy, even with jeans.
Other then that it's a beautifully constructed garment and if you are in love with the style, by all means, it's worth getting it. I did not try 0, but bet even that would fit me, that's how loose 4 was. It had a slightly A line /swingy shape to it, almost looked like Greta on me. I know it was not the intent, as it seems much more fitted on a model. Hope it helps!

  17. Can anyone comment on the fit of the sizes at the Madwell store?

    Thanks.

  18. Thanks for the replies on the Penny and the Carrie. My B&M store (which usually gets nothing more than basics actually had received the acorn Carrie and the black Penny so I was able to try them at lunchtime. The Penny is huge! it is far too swingy and I usually like the voluminous jackets and coats. I actually thought it was just so-so as far as construction too. The Carrie did not even get tried on as I thought the fabric looked really poor.

I went to return my black Felicia (loved it, but stark black is not good on me), and ended up buying a coat that is similar to the Lucinda. It is all wool and is a charcoal gray. It was $298 and 30% off.

By the way, if anyone is still looking for the brushstroke Belle skirt, the International Mall store in Tampa Florida had a 2 and a 10.

  19. I ordered the acorn Carrie in 0P. It will probably be too big.. I am 100lbs and 5'2".
I really like the tie around the collar, but I do agree that I would probably leave the collar down.

  20. Alexis, I have a pear shaped body too. I've never tried Madewell pants but I wear J Crew matchstick jeans just fine. I have a long torso and I find that a long structured jacket that hits on the hip (not above) looks nice with the matchstick jeans. I've been looking for a great affordable long jacket that looks like a black Elizabeth and James. So far I've only got lucky with a Guess jacket( from a junior department) that gives me that long silhouette.

  21. Hi Mack

If you (or any of the other bloggers) obtains information on the Military jacket would you please share here? I love it! Yes, I would wear that outfit.

  22. I, too, have a bottom-heavy figure. And I'm short. I love the matchstick cords and have several pairs from the past. But I'm beginning to wonder (and Alexis' note about the matchstick style made me wonder even more) if I ought to go back to a boot cut. I've always hated the size of my rear, ever since I was a child, and now that I need to take off six pounds -- ugghh. I probably really need to quit wearing narrow pants. By the way, Alexis, thanks again for continuing to post. So many other parts of my life are in turmoil or flux that I really do enjoy the little escape of coming here. Stewart

  23. kitsmommy: I just received my Penny jacket.
I am 5'5" and after trying on size 4 in the store I ran out of it promising myself to forget the jacket completely (it was boxy, it looked really awkward on me-the image on the website is a world apart from what size 4 looked on me)

I ordered a size 0 jacket for myself and it fits perfectly. It it NOT fitted (as shown online) but it's not too boxy either. I just tried it on (haven't worn it outside yet) but it seems like a warm jacket to me (I don't plan on wearing sweaters underneath it)

    It's not itchy!

Let me know if you need more info!

  24. I don't like the boots-over-jeans look on me. I'm fairly short and have muscular legs (I'm a runner) so I think it would emphasize my shortness. :) I prefer not to do that. ;)
