J.Crew sent an email reminding us that their Private Sale (offering 20% off orders of $175+) is ending today. If you need a print-out of this promo (to take advantage of this offer in stores), click here.

Did this promotion get you to visit their stores and online commerce site more often? Were you able to take advantage of this promotion? If so, please share with us what items you were able to get. :)

  1. Hi, new to posting but I've been a follower of this blog for a couple of months now. I just went crazy with the 20% off and have to share it with people who care!!!
    So I got -
    1. The abstract rose print dress.
    2. The sketchbook roses belle skirt (I'm so excited about this one).
    3. Navy merino rose cardi. (to go with the belle skirt)
    4. City metallic ballet flats in pewter
    5. 2 perfect fit scoop neck tees in white and shell. I have this in dark cloud and am in love with this basic tee. I think its the sleeve length that gets me.
    6. A Lisa dress in kelly. I have one in navy and I literally live in that dress all weekend. I was so happy to find it back in final sale. Hopefully I won't get an Inventory Cancel email as they finish up my order.

I'm officially not allowed to look at the website for a while. Well. Until the holiday catalog hits my mail box.

This is such a great blog. Thanks for letting me get my excitement out.

  2. NoJCrewInJapan: Congrats on all those amazing pieces!!! The sketchbook roses belle skirt is so pretty! :)

  3. I didn't use the Private Sale coupon...I am anxiously awaiting the Holiday Rollout before making anymore purchases. :)

  4. FFM: I agree...I am waiting for some new stuff! I am also waiting for final sale to end and will make a sale purchase when it does go away if what I want is still available...I have been good for so many months...I refuse to buy final sale.

  5. Alexis,

I was wondering if you could set up a permanent "store-spotter" section on your blog? Other Aficionadas could leave comments in this section about which stores are offering promotions that cannot be found online. Although Aficionadas do kindly post this information often, most times I have to comb through mountains of other messages in disparate sections before finding posts about in-store promotions or discounts.

Store promotions seem to be far more generous than online promotions, at least lately. I, and other Aficionadas, live very, very far from any J.Crew store. And, unless we read in your blog that stores (or a particular store) are offering an exceptional promotion, we have no way of finding out. (Since stores do ship merchandise, I often buy from them rather than the website.)

    Thanks for considering this request.

    Vivi

  6. i've been good so far, haven't bought anything with this coupon code. but that's also partly becuase i've bought waaay too much prior to this coupon's existence. as in 2 peplum sweaters, 2 femme sweater, and many more. yikes.

  7. I found the tumbled patent leather Candace Bag I was talking about last week in the Bag Thread in a store not near me-the stores near me were sold out-I was so excited to find out it was marked down to 109.99 and then an additional 20% off! I had to pay shipping, but I am still so excited to receive it this week! So I ended up not using the extra 20 coupon online because my total wasnt $175. I bought final sale stuff last week- a bathing suit(each piece was only $9.99!!), a waffle lined hoodie, and the beaded wavy necklace. SHould be arriving today! Horray!BGD

  8. This is a repeat query from another post, but I am thinking about buying some bootcut cords (everyone seems to really like them!) The only cords I have from j.crew are the trouser cords. Do the bootcut cords fit more like their bootcut jeans, or more like their favorite fit chinos? Any help would be appreciated :) TIA!

    ReplyDelete
  9. Speaking of cords, I was so disappointed with the matchstick style this year. They just don't fit me at all, and it seems like the pockets are too big (or something). Two of the girls working at the Orland Park, Ill., store thought the same thing. The ones I bought last year and the year before were great. Has anyone else noticed this?

    ReplyDelete
  10. appgal: I purchased a pair of bootcut cords and chinos on Sat. I found the cords to be tighter than the chinos, but from previous experience, looser than the jeans (but more the same shape). I purchased them in my regular size. I do love their cords and would not purchase them anywhere else. I plan to try the trouser cords next time I visit a B&M, (mine is about 2 hrs. away) so I will have to wait a few weeks.
    Hope this helps.

  11. I haven't made it to the store yet. I plan on going tonight after work

  12. I picked up the Oilcloth field jacket for men and really think I'm going to keep it. Does anyone have any past/current thoughts about the "British Millerian oilcloth" or about the jacket itself? I'm still not wearing it out until I see the new roll out and make sure this is the jacket for me!

    ReplyDelete
  13. lovesargyle: THANKS! that really helps. I love my bootcut jeans but they are a little snug--if the cords were exactly like that, i'd want to size up.

    ReplyDelete
  14. I do not think you need to size up on the bootcut cords. Stick with your size - they have a little room. Beautiful fit - very flattering.

    ReplyDelete
  15. lovesargyle - Have you worn your bootcut cords yet? I found that mine loosened as I wore them during the day.

  16. Has anyone ever bought a plaza coat? What are your opinions on it with or without the thinsulate? I really want a heavy, all-purpose winter coat and just wanted to see if it's a good coat overall. :)

    ReplyDelete
  17. I have two Plaza coats with Thinsulate and live outside of Chicago. I think they are very warm. If you live in a cold climate, get one!

  18. I was traveling so had a chance to get into two stores, Pentagon City and Baltimore Gallery. Sorry to say that the service at Pentagon City was non-existent the day I visited (Tues., Oct. 7 around 12:00-1:00). Snooty looks from the one tall associate near the sale section. Baltimore associates were MUCH nicer, espec. Thurs. aft. Unfortunately, nothing there fits me anymore due to vanity sizing. Tried the matchstick jeans in 25S. They are sized like 26S used to be. I finally decided if I wanted skinny jeans, I could buy size 24 at Forever 21 in the same mall for $12.50. I am no Forever 21 fan, but they were great color and styling, and they fit. Better at $12.50 than $98.00 at J. Crew. I continue to be disappointed w/ J. Crew vanity sizing, and I just wasn't excited by anything currently in the store.

  19. I have the trouser cords in cement and love them. The fit is really nice and very flattering. I'd like to get the coral color too.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Can anyone comment on the new Matchstick jeans in premium indigo. I saw them styled in the store in San Jose, and they just looked so refined and cute.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Oh man, I used it wayyy too often! I snagged a pair of Trixie heels online in warm ivory (here's hoping they aren't canceled!), the wool herringbone skirt in black to wear with them, two Tartine sweaters in the dark orange and the heather poppy colors, the pleated silk blouse in dark gray, fleece-lined button-up sweatshirt in the same color, a couple of t-shirts, a skinny metallic belt, and the same tote bag bgd got but in gold. I'm sooo excited, though my credit card is not!!! Must...stop...shopping...

  22. Does anyone have this sweater? Dream taffeta-sash cardigan

If so is it cut fitted or is it cut in a square? Thanks so much for the info...

  23. Melanie -- I have the Plaza coat in 3 of the colors, all with the Thinsulate. I live in Chicago and wouldn't dream of getting one without that added layer. The coat is wonderful -- it can appear dressy or not, and it's very soft and comfy.

Sam -- I think that coat is fabulous.

I too am trying to hold off and not use the PS promotion, for myself anyway - I used it to buy a few gifts that will be given this week and next, so it was much appreciated for that. Waiting for items to go on sale and for the new items to come out.....

  24. Laura-

I have that cardigan in the yellow color. I would call it more of a swing-fit style. It is loose, but not boxy. Definitely don't size up in it, otherwise it would lose the slight shape it has.

I went to the Michigan Avenue store, and used the final sale discount and the private sale discount, which was awesome. I bought two bella skirts, a great scarf, a few painter v-necks and the dream taffeta sash cardigan.

  25. Does anyone know how thick the French Serge Day coat is? or the Double Cloth Greta or Felicia? Just looking at coats.. I'm guessing some of them won't be enough to get through the winter (New England), wondering which ones are thick! I like the peacoat.

  26. Hi, Alexis:

I am not sure where to post this, but found this link showing Michelle Obama in Jcrew. She is wearing the sketchbook roses belle skirt:http://www.mrs-o.org/
Whatever your politics, it was good to see. I hadn't considered pairing it with green:) .. Make sure you scroll down.

  27. OT: if I wear a 2 in the vintage trouser cords will I need the same size in the bootcut cords?
    Thanks!

  28. isadore - how cool! I can't believe I have the same skirt as Michelle!!!

  29. Does anyone know what happened to the Kate flannel dress? It was available online in all sizes last week, and then one day it just disappeared from the website.....right before I bought it. :(

  30. Love this blog! I check it many times a day!

I bought the Candace tumbled patent bag in kelly green- $109, plus 20% FS discount and got another 20% off with the coupon!

Also bought one of the newer tees- it's dark gray and has a large satin ivory bow on the front.

Got a watercolor? roses belle skirt- same deal as the Candace bag with the discounts. Gonna take back the other one I bought at full price a couple of weeks ago.

Anyone looking for the Candace bag- try the Towson, MD store- they had many on Friday.

    ReplyDelete
  31. gigiofca: I haven't been able to wear them yet b/c it is still in the 80's here but we are expecting a cool down on Thurs. so hopefully I can wear them in the next couple of weeks. Do they strech too much, are they baggy by the end of the day? or is it more like the way jeans always get a little looser as you wear them? Thanks

  32. I just got back from both a retail and and outlet store - I think the final sale is over at my retail store!! I didn't explicitly ask, but the associate didn't "warn" me that my items were final sale like they typically do, and the receipt doesn't say anything about final sale. The sale items were still an additional 20% off, plus 20% off for the private sale! This was at the Grand Boulevard (FL) store.

Also, my retail store carried a black Fiona jacket with a definite "outlet" feel to it. I almost asked if it came from the outlet, but I didn't want to offend anyone! Then when I went to the outlet, I saw the EXACT same black Fiona, as well as the some of the rhubarb Fionas from the retail store. The rhubarbs felt exactly like retail versions, and they lacked the two diamonds on the label that typically show up on outlet items. I did ask the outlet woman if the rhubarb Fionas came from the retail store, and she told me that the outlet items are of the same quality as the retail items, but with lower prices. (I didn't tell her that in my experience, the outlet items are the same price as retail items, but with lower quality!!)

Has anyone else seen outlet items showing up in retail stores or vice versa?

    ReplyDelete
  33. I did see the rhubarb fionas at the outlet store yesterday, and some reddish herringbone Ecoles as well.

  34. BGD and Anon@2:50: Do you know if there's a photo of the Candace bag online? I had seen it in the store but really want to know if it's the name of the same bag I saw. As far as I know, it never made it online... Maybe it was an in-store only item?

The sketchbook roses belle skirt is not online anymore, either. I'm pretty sure it's still in "my" store (Northpark, TX) but since I'm abroad, that wouldn't do me any good.

  35. @ Sam nice pick with the oilcloth field jacket. My boyfriend has it in green and wears it practically every weekend. This may sound odd but I think it smells amazing. He was a little clueless on how to clean it but I just took it to my laundry service and they knew exactly what to do. If you spill on it clean it right away with a damp soft cloth and warm water. The material holds up very well, even on the elbows. His friend has a similar coat from last year that still looks new.

  36. Does anyone know if the Avery bag was misnamed in the October catalog (page 47) and its really the Quincy tote? Just a little confused....

    ReplyDelete
  37. I'm planning on scooping up another favorite washed shirt, but the red plaid one. I already have one in navy and another in green. They are great, one of the best things J.Crew makes are these shirts. Light weight, easy to put under sweaters and they look great with jeans, chinos and even wool suit pants.

Think about getting one for you boyfriend/spouse ladies; they're wonderful.

  38. audrey at 4:09-it's a retail only bag. never saw it online.
I called and ordered mine over the phone at the pittsburg store on friday, looking to receive it this week!

Hope you don't mind me linking to your blog, gigi! I love this bag but have not seen it at my b&m - think I could have them do a "we will find it for you"? It's as cute as a button!

  40. Ooh, I have been checking out that bag for a while now but didn't know its name or that it was marked down. Are all the colors on sale? I love the silver one. The Manhasset store has several, in silver, green, and another color I can't remember. Really cute and versatile!

  43. @kitchy7 -- thanks!! (awesome user name, btw. have you read a book called "the unbearable lightness of being"?

@roxy -- thanks so much for all the background. Hopefully your story and the scent of the jacket will attract the few girls that attend my university my way!! Thanks also for the tips on cleaning... I'm sure i'll need it!

Oh, in the excitement of the Oilcloth jacket, I forgot to mention that I picked up a solid white vintage polo. Never can have enough.

  44. Sam - happy to help! I have not read that book, but it's been on my list forever. I do hear it's kitchy though (or kitschy, if you prefer). :)

  45. I was so happy with my purchases from Sunday!
    1. Merino Ruffle Cardigan
    2. Cambridge Cable Crewneck
    3. Silky jersey 3/4 sleeve pleated top
    4. Also got the favorite-fit checked academy pants in charcoal

My husband also picked up a corduroy jacket and vintage cord pants. It was a successful trip!

I also got Juliet patent-leather mid-heels in buttercup for $119 last Thursday (without coupon) -they went on sale (along with the bright peacock) for $139 and they took an additional 20% off for final sale. I love these shoes and can't wait to get the almond color!

I know this is really late to ask, but does anyone know how I can get the Flowy Jersey Bateau dress in XS (preferably in navy or strawberry) without having to pay $50 on eBay? I don't know why I didn't pick up this dress sooner.

  46. I had a rather strange experience at my b&m yesterday. I went in to buy a tartine cardigan but the only sizes available were size L and I need a S, so I asked a SA if they had anymore in back. He said no and was very nice and helpful. He walked me over to the red phone and picked it up and told the CSR what I needed. He paused for a second to tell me that the only colors available were light pewter and maize (the only colors they had at the store) and that all other colors were backordered until Dec 2. I went ahead and ordered the 2 colors available, but when I got home and hopped onto the website, it didn't appear that any of the other colors were backordered at all. Has anyone had that type of experience before??

    ReplyDelete
  47. Maryam-

I have the snow leopard Simone- thanks to fellow Aficionada and the weekly exchange:) I believe that it fits true to size. To get the full effect of the jacket you have to wear it buttoned up. If you are looking at the simone jacket-sorry I have not tried that one on.

  49. bgd @ anon 2:50p - Major score on the Candace. Congratulations!

anon @ 12:11 - I have to agree on some of the matchstick style jeans/pants at Forever 21. And many are $19.99 or less. However, their cut is still going to be a Jr fit which doesn't work for a Misses body. I don't consider myself quite a Jr anymore even though I am small, so I was surprised how cute they were on.

Laura - Don't size up on the Dream taffeta-sash cardigan. It's lays flat on the body but is not tight. IMO it fits like the dream tie cardigan (96220).

lovesargyle - The matchsticks I got are fitted, as they're supposed to be. I wore them today and they stretched out as jeans do. They weren't saggy, per se, but definitely not as tight as the day wore not. Not in a bad way. I think you shouldn't size up if you were considering.

linda - I've beem told the CS show the most correct information on their computers. So it's possible they see info we are not seeing on the website.

silver_lining - No problem linking to my blog. The bag is on sale for $109.99 and I haven't seen in the sale section. It's on display around the stores like regular priced merch. It comes in dark bright blue, bright kelly green, sour lemonish yellow, gold and black. All colors are on sale as far as I know and it was never available on the web.

There is a new, similar bag for $198 and it is leather. It comes in a pinkish brown fleshtone, if I recall correctly and a gold. The straps are a little thicker and seem to be made of a cotton material with leather accents, so it's a contrast strap. Striking, and a great basic, but I love my black patent more.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Someone asked about the French serge day coat (in the very bright saffron)- it is very lightweight, and the sizing is at least 1 to 2 sizes too big.

How is the sizing for the simone coat (the navy, not the snow leopard)? I normally wear medium for the heavy knit ones such as Alice from last year.

I saw the black fiona at the outlet. It looked like an overstock from the retail, and at the outlet it's more expensive than the retail price (now on sale, plus 20% off, plus 20% off private sale).

I got a rose print dress (with the flannel bottom), and the orange wool skirt with the private sale coupon. I wouldn't think about the rose print dress except for a few positive comments on this blog. It really fitted my hourglass figure well and paired with a cardigan or jacket makes a pretty nice business outfit that's not entirely traditional.

    ReplyDelete
  51. I don't think the green worked with the sketch book skirt, maybe if it's more of an olive green it will look better. Plus pairing the very full skirt with flats seems to little bit too young of a look for a potential first lady.

  52. Has anyone bought this necklace - Double-strand crystal clasp necklace item 98319? Is it nice, easy to wear?

I like the yellow beads and was wondering if it would match the bee jeweled glass green necklace? I really like the layered look in the catalog which pairs it with the glass bead lady bug necklace.

  53. Can anyone tell me where the Juliet heels are on sale and in what colors. I am looking for a pair in buttercup in a size 6.5.

  54. Thanks gigiofca, I thought it was just me and that the SA didn't want me ordering one of every color or something because I totaly would have.
