J.Crew Reviews {straight from the JCAs!}

This is the weekly "J.Crew Reviews {straight from the JCAs}" post, to help each other share our reviews.

So if you have recently purchased, or stopped by a J.Crew store to try on an item (or two) from J.Crew, maybe you might be willing to share that information with us in this post.

Also, this request is not just limited to clothes. Please feel free to discuss bags, shoes, jewelry, accessories, etc.

In particular, if you could mention a few of the noteworthy details like fit, size, fabric, and the like— that would be fantastic! Thanks in advance! :)

  1. I know I could be patient and just wait for the site to load new arrivals after midnight west coast time, but I'm impatient! Can any of you help me sleuth out 2 items? The first is the blackwatch plaid legging like pant that is shown in the thumbnail for the "Looks We Love" with the green fair isle sweater, but not on the Looks we Love page. The other is from the style guide in the insert advertising the credit card. Perk 4 has a pair of pointed-toe tartan sling-back flats with a ribbon tie over the foot. Thanks in advance, JCA detectives!

    1. I love them! But why does everything need to be cropped? Can't do it here in the Northeast...

  3. THANKU promo for 40% off is live! Super irritated that they are suddenly OOS on the flannel pj pants-grr. Guessing they'll magically re-appear post-promo. Ah, well. Had to talk myself out of a couple of cute pop-backs, and the mountain vest (SO cute, but I have a huge collection of vests already). Great deal on a couple basics. Hope y'all find some goodies.

  4. I know this is petty, and probably more a vent, but I keep getting distracted by the web site and its lack of care given to the design. On the New Arrivals link, the underline stretches past the word. I realize this is so not important in the grand scheme of things but every day I see it I just want to fix it so badly. How do they not notice?

    1. Hi Teri - I think at this point they're trying to survive, not thrive. ; )

The site is a hot mess for me this AM - the main sweater page has the Tippi in ornate floral at the top. You know, from February. New arrivals seem to be scattered about, but the main NA page is the last rollout. "11 New Must Haves for Fall" is still on the sidebar with images from the September catalog. Plus, it's hard to scroll through a page when every image you accidentally hover past expands into a "Shop the Look" window. Eeek!

    2. ...And it’s so slow to load the new stuff. Ugh I should be asleep still 3am PST. But I need to put that cabarnet faux fur coat in my shopping cart. 😂

      Delete
    3. Thanks Silver Lining! Why am I not seeing it before from the collection page?
Anyhoo...do I want to look like Jon Snow in cabarnet color? 😆
But so tempting with the 40% and it’s cute on that model with sunnies.

    4. @TeriLynn13, I agree with you. Not a fan of this new design, it's distracting and unattractive. I wish they had kept the design the way it was before Jenna left.

  5. I can’t believe they changed the cardigan with ruffles from NYFW that I liked. The ruffle color and placement is different. And the price? Wow! At least it’s 40% and no poly. Yay!

    1. Yeah that was not what I pictured. And why such a high price?

Hope your cabernet coat works out. It looks so glam. It's always warm where I live can't think of a coat. I liked the plaid puffer jacket, but I have something like that from CK.

      Delete
    2. I noticed that too JSR. I think the green plaid they chose is more holiday. The navy and burgundy look like it would be a better choice for all winter long.

    3. No leopard clutch yet on the site!

  9. The paisley top in silk twill looks lovely! Ordered that and the red plaid Cameron pants this morning along with the rose tee ( loved the original from 2008!). Also ordered the green tulle skirt because I can't stop thinking about it. :). A couple of presents ordered too. A good deal with 40% off!

  11. New arrivals are up, 40% off and free shipping. Here comes the tartan! This is the rollout I’ve been waiting for ... some very cute things. Love the Hounstooth Bomber, Tartan Belted Puffer, Large Tartan Envelope.

  12. What is the point of having holiday clothing that is on backorder? I would not receive these items until mid December if I ordered them? I have a party to attend on the first weekend of December! It takes 7-10 days for my deliveries (west coast)....it's really disheartening for me as a customer and I can't imagine very conducive to business. Maybe my store will have the items...maybe not. I guess I just can't worry about it. And stupid me...I just got a J. Crew Card!

  13. The fair isle sweaters are already sold out. I loved them. Hoping that J Crew will soon get the message to stay true to their roots and they will thrive.

    1. I loved the look of the collection alpaca fair isle sweater H2811 but it looks so cropped. I'm not tall but I'm not sure it would work. In winter cropped is not good. Long enough to wear over skinnies or leggings is good!

      Delete
    2. You can try one of the men's options - they're not sold out and the prices are better (though the colors are limited). I picked up an alpaca one in men's XS. I like a looser fit with my sweaters anyway, and the men's version will be longer so that resolves the potential cropped issue. I've never gotten a JC alpaca sweater before so I don't know about quality but quality 100% alpaca sweaters are expensive - I was shopping for them in New Zealand and they were NZ$600+! I'm annoyed that JC's collection alpaca is an alpaca/polyamide/merino wool blend though - for that price and by that name that's not right. Don't call it alpaca unless it's 100%!

      Delete
    3. Keep your eyes peeled the coming days. They’re slow with loading the new merchandise. I highly doubt that it’s already sold out.

    4. Those fair isle sweaters were stunning in green and blue. I can't believe they all sold out in a couple of hours.

I would have bought them all too if I didn't live in tropical climes.

    5. @CRDSa - I would glad trade all the fair isle sweaters in the world to live in a tropical clime!

    1. Cdn site has problems with the new items I’ve called already. Very annoying aarg they couldn’t even order for me

    2. this happened the last time they had 40% off as well. Canadians can't check out... after all the time spend looking at pages...I also thought I do not really need any of it right now. a pass for me as well. usually free shipping gets me...but not this time.
nothing really "wowed" me with this roll out.
      * some of sale is 40% off...just make it all 40% rid of it..please!

      Delete
    3. I had a problem as well. The shipping fee was still applied, but I went ahead with the checkout and figured I could call to get that straightened out later. Then I got an error message at checkout saying something like Value *191 is higher than expected value *179, which I presume was the checkout detecting that I was paying $12 too much! But I immediately re-tried it and it went through, thankfully. I didn't have time to waste calling CS and I knew my items would be gone by this afternoon with such a great promo going.

  15. Yay! This is what I have been waiting for! I feel like the J.Crew I love is sort of back. Some great holiday options. I still won't buy the sweaters with acrylic but with the lower starting price points and 40% off I bit. I ordered the red plaid Cameron pants( in two sizes as I have no idea which will fit), paisley print pant and sadies cross strap flats in plaid. I also put a bunch of things on my wishlist. Maybe there is still a bit of hope.

    1. After reviewing my cart again, took out the paisley pants as they are poly. Was hoping for silk as the top in the same print is silk. Oh well. I like the prints and plaids better but fabric content continues to hinder me from pulling the trigger. I know poly is pretty much every where now but I just can't with 100% poly pants. Blends are ok.

      Delete
    2. I don't understand why they would do a silk top in a poly bottom. Makes no sense

      Delete
  16. Any thoughts of the velvet jumpsuit? I wanna pull the trigger at 40% off, but trying avoid mall traffic. Is it bra friendly? Worth the taking on and off at parties? What would I wear over it?

    ReplyDelete
  17. Lots to love and hooray for 40% off of most items. I ordered the glen plaid suit, tuxedo blazer, rose tee (missed the original), black watch pants (I tried a pair at BR but they're not a love) and the paisley pants.

On another note, I am wearing the wide leg matte crepe pants today with the green wrap top - I love these pants! Still need to post my pic on IG but these pants are so much nicer than they have them styled on the model. I may need the green. Happy holiday shopping :)

    3. CR DSa, I am a 6 in dresses/fuller skirts (my waist is really a 6) and an 8 in most pants but I took a 6 in these pants. They sit really high on the waist and with the elastic I have plenty of room for my hips. So, depending on your shape, you may be able to size down. I posted a photo on my IG, @fablifeforever

Gabriela - Hopefully they'll restock in the green :)

      Delete
    4. Thank you Anne! I checked out your IG, so perfectly styled!
May I ask how tall are you? Some reviews say the pant is too long.
      Thank you again!

      Delete
    5. CR DSa, I'm 5'8" and wearing almost 4" heels. So I can see how they're likely long on a lot of people.

      Delete
    6. Thanks for this Anne! I am 5’7” so might work.

  18. The wool flannel ruffle skirt G7119 is an absolute home run! I was sure it would be too frou-frou, too short, generally ill-fitting - but I tried it on and I was absolutely WRONG. Length is perfect, ruffles are interesting without being silly, lycra content adds to the comfort. At 5'7" the regular length is about 2 inches above my knee, and I sized down as I usually do with elastic-waist JC skirts. A good basic addition to my wardrobe, and the current sale price is spot on. You can see the blue version on my IG @poettodesign and the gold on @emmeltwins

  19. am I the only one who doesn't care for the statement tee shirts?
I do not want people reading my shirt....then again maybe I am just too old for J Crew now. I definitely am too old for Madewell.

    4. I don't really either. Although I like the Shiraz one and "live a little," but when I thought about it where would I wear them? Right, I probably wouldn't. I'd probably get the Shiraz one if it makes it to super clearance. Then again, the Sag t-shirt would only be $10 today and though I think it's cute, I still don't think I'll get it.

  20. another note....for the short time we can wear tartan. ...there sure is alot of it.

    1. yeah i'm not interested in purchasing tartan because the wearability window it too short.

not seeing a whole lot that interests me for the holidays. this may be the first 40% off promo where I buy nothing.

    2. I do like the plaid belted puffer but it looks very lightweight and it would have been an October piece for me, not to wear in December.

      Delete
    3. Yeah that plaid puffer has me very tempted too!!

Tartan does not work well for me. I skipped it but the suit will look super cute for Xmas.

      Delete
    4. I had the same thought recently... I love love tartan but it is really a November/December thing for me. The button downs I can stretch into a little more wear time but if it is skirts or pants they feel very "winter holiday" to me.
Cass, I had the exact thought when I saw that belted puffer "they should have brought that out 2 months ago".

      Delete
    5. yup, totally would have bought it in October. The lightweight liberty puffer sold really wear in sept but it wasn't for me because it didn't have enough shape. the plaid puffer would have been a nice alternative with the belt tie.

      Delete
    6. Yes, that puffer is adorable. I wish they made it in a red or black tartan.

  21. Oh man, I ordered way too much! Thankfully I had a gift card that covered more than half but the crew really got me today. I’m sure not everything will work but we’ll see. I got the funnel neck striped shirt, chambray ruffles top, and chino button skirt on popback. The skirt is actually my second because I plan to add black polka dots like the pants. For new items, I picked up the oui and tartan sweatshirts, rose tee, and live a little tee. I may also pick up the olive winter parka. I have the factory vail wool parka so I don’t really need another coat but the olive is so great for dressing down. And the price is so good with 40% off!

    Replies
    1. I like the funnel neck striped top. I tried it when it first came out but figured I'd wait to see if it got reduced, it didn't of course and now that I'd like to buy at 40 off and use my rewards, any size I could potentially wear is backordered until January. Uh, that doesn't really work. Oh well.

  22. Ok...where in the heck is that Scottie sequin tee, already?! It's getting ridiculous.

    1. Yes! I was irritated by the same thing? Where is this cute tee they keep teasing us with? Will it be on back order when it does show up on the site with all sizes almost sold out? J Crew, we want to give you our money, but you are making it so hard!

    2. OMG I have been waiting for it as well!

  23. also, word is from my teacher friends that the educator/student discount will stack on the 40% off. You have to generate a new code every time you want to use it but this is good news :)

    1. I spoke to my store and they are not allowing student/teacher discounts to be stakced with the 40..I am sure this applies to all stores

  24. Happy to see the tartan flats with bow are available in a full size run. Placed an order for the flats and the silk tartan scarf. Planning to order the Live a little tee too, but not sure if I should size up as it seems to run small? Did anyone try on the tee?

    ReplyDelete
  25. I ordered three sale items. The gold mules which I've been eyeing, the black silk ruffle blouse in tall (I don't really need the tall in this style but I don't think the extra length will be bad. I tried it on) and a basic perfect turtleneck in black. Fair prices for all.
I'm tempted to try a few new items but might wait it out since I don't need anything.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Not to be a scrooge or party pooper but am I the only one NOT feeling J Crew this holiday season? Perhaps I'm being particular (ok super picky) on my purchases but just got this "seen it, done it before saturation" and when I find something I do like, the quality is not what it used to be...**sigh** sorry i could not wait for this week's vent post

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I'm kind of the same way. Things I think are pretty but limited in use. I wear red, black and metallic year round, so I don't need specific holiday wear. I have a velvet blazer, metallic tweed blazer and two plaid shirts from previous years so unless I love a cut or pattern, I'm good. We have a few parties but they're only as dressy as I make them, so I could wear jeans or dress up.

      Delete
    2. Hello dr32, I have very few loves too this season. Just bought stuff that I need to complete my wardrobe. So far only got the Stewart plaid shirt, I ruined my last one in the wash. Rest all (most accessories and small bags) are gifts for family.

      Delete
    3. Same here, in part because I don't care for many of the current trends (ruffles, OTS, etc), and in part because I have a closet full of older, higher-quality JC pieces. Whenever I'm tempted by something new at JC, I know it likely won't measure up to the faves I already have.

      Delete
  27. The 40%, free shipping plus rewards were enough incentive for me to place a small order of tartan for me and a couple gifts. I don’t mind the limited wear of a couple tartan pieces if I get a good deal and love it. I think the lower quality of their stuff works in J Crews favor for seasonal stuff - the bar is lower!

All the slogan tees are annoying, and maybe it’s just me. I think it was mentioned upthread. Flimsy slogan tees in winter? The trend is so played out and juvenile. Plus, it’s about as fast-fashion as you can get and the market is completely saturated w $10 versions. I just think it’s lazy. J Crew you can do better.

    ReplyDelete
  28. I like the new holiday releases i.e. Tartan puffer jacket, tiered maxi skirt, live a little & champagne tee. I didn't order anything from new arrivals. I may still cave & order tees. Instead, I used my rewards and bday gift cards to order some collection items I've wanted (double cashmere popover funnel neck jacket in walnut and collection leather leggings in navy). Couldn't believe they were included in 40% off since these items are typically excluded. Had a 20% off coupon I was able to stack with educator discount. My VPS said he was also surprised by how much was included in this promo, but he said there are lots of happy customers😀.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Why would they model the Parke Tartan Blazer, with what appears to be a black lapel, over a black shirt? I can see zero details.

Similarly, the Silk Twill Paisley Top...styled with matching pants to get no idea of shirt hem? Also, thank you to the JCA who pointed out the matching pants were poly.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I was going to mention this earlier as I ageee with you. The photos they use on the main page for many of the items have the model in some sort of weird position so you can't even see what the item truly looks like or the model is wearing too many layers so you can't see the full item. I have to click on each item and scroll through the other photos to maybe get somewhat an idea of what the item might really look like. Frustrating. I was the one who posted about the paisley pants. Glad I took a second look at everything more closely before I placed an order. Why do a silk top but poly pant?

      Delete
    2. Thank you JessF! Why not do a full print run on the silk material? I truly cannot understand and wish I could be told a simple explanation by someone at JC.
Confession - I still put the pants on my wishlist! I almost feel like if my bf buys them for me, it's somehow okay...

      Delete
    3. Hi ladies - I wouldn't be surprised if both the top and the bottom are poly. Remember the Ratti paisley items from the last rollout? Initially, a lot of JCA's were complaining that they did the top in poly but the pants in silk. Now the lone review of the pants says they are not silk, but are poly - the description's since been updated. I'd be interested to hear if the new paisley top is in fact silk.

  32. Q3 Earnings are posted. Unfortunately, J.Crew sales are down for another consecutive month. Madewell is showing gains, and is pulling in an amount equal to 25% of J Crew sales. Y'all, I've been a devout fan of J. Crew since the 90's, and I really want them to pull through. However, 2+ years of decreasing sales are not a good sign. They have already restructured debt, changed management, and reduced staff. I feel depressed in realizing this ship is sinking. Welp, I better get all I want from them before the curtains close.

    1. Hi carmelfor02 - although it's not surprising, it really is disappointing. This year has been a mess for them - they pared down the catalogs, closed the clearance center, eliminated the VPS program (I think?), moved factory items to the retail site, stopped % off the sale section, etc. And that's all before you count the seasonally inappropriate items, way too many OTS items, strange promotions and so on.

It's a bit strange to not have any idea what to expect from them in Spring because we've gotten used to them showing at NYFW...but maybe they won't be around then? I really have no clue. Maybe they'll just become "Mercantile" altogether.

      Delete
    2. Stay tuned this holiday season about 40 stores will close between Nov - Jan. No indication of locations, but I imagine, since they plan on opening 8 Madewell stores, that the target is on J. Crew stores.

      Delete
    3. When my B&M (Albany, NY) closed early this year, the manager mentioned to me that the Syracuse location only signed a one-year lease for 2017 which I guess is pretty unusual. I wonder if they will also close.

      Delete
    4. I braved the pre-Thanksgiving madness to go to my local store today to view the new rollout. As I walk in I notice I don't see ONE item from today's rollout. "You're here for the 40% off!" one CA says...."Where is the new rollout?" "Oh we just got it (it was 12:30) and it's not out yet". Then we go through the process of me saying "I'm sure you won't be getting it" (this is based on the last year of dwindling offerings) and they saying "oh, we'll go look in the back for you". So they call to the back and I wait only to be told "oh, we're not getting any of those items". "THOSE" items were holiday items. Not getting any of them. Seriously. If my closes I won't be in the least surprised.

    1. I agree, it was stupid for them not to offer the 40% off to customers on Monday. I stopped in Monday and saw some new arrivals at both JCrew and Madewell but since I knew they offered a discount the day before and would also for Black Friday, I didn't even look to buy. That's just not smart on the part of a retailer with regular, knowledgeable customers.

      Delete
    2. Agreed. I got tons of mailers and emails telling of pre-black Friday sales and offers. These retailers know they have to make people aware of sales. Competition is stiff. I think it's a big mistake for the Crew to think we'll tolerate the kind of games they play that I don't see at any other retailers. Those other retailers are literally begging me to spend money with them. Time to wake up JCrew.

    6. Hi Cass - the birthday discount is $25 off your purchase of $25 or more (it came by mail in a card), but it's a promo code that can't be stacked with other offers. Some JCA's contact CS to combine a promo with the birthday discount.

    7. Wow, that’s way better than the $25 off $100 that they always offer me! I guess it pays to be a cardholder,

    8. You can double or stack the birthday discount only in-store. For online you have to call CS.

Cass, this is sent to JCrew card holders...do you have their store card?

  37. As if I wasn't already mad enough this morning SUDDENLY something that sold out yesterday at 40% off is suddenly totally restocked but now excluded from the 40% off. Customer Service is going to be getting a telephone call from me this morning. I'm really tired of all the games.

  38. Called Customer Service and got excellent service. The rep said she doesn't know why the item was excluded and it really shouldn't have been and was happy to honor yesterdays discount. VERY nice transaction. Also the item is not backordered today so this works out better for me because I'll actually receive it so I can wear it to events. Yah!

    2. Hi Unknown, It's the tartan maxi skirt. I wanted to wear it to a early party, but it was backordered and I live on the west coast and wanted it by Dec 2nd, then it sold out after I went to the store to buy it and found out my store didn't get it. I got a little irriatated then saw it this morning at full price and fully stocked. I called CS and told her my story and she was happy to order it for me at the sale price and free shipping and it's not on backorder today. GEEZ! ALL that for a holiday skirt! I better love it! Ha!

    3. I ordered that one too @Stray Cat. I can’t wait for reviews as I’m hoping I ordered the right size and my shipping takes a long time thanks to borderfree.

  39. This should probably go in the vent section but I got my paisley pants today and...(drumroll)...they're silk. Tag says 100% silk - get it together, Crew. That being said, not sure I love how much red/yellow is in the print but will try them on after lunch.

    1. Hmmmmm... I really like the matching top. I wonder if the top is actually poly? (Vs. the description that says silk) Does anyone have the top?

    2. I'll have the top coming on Friday and can report back then!

    3. Anne, you wear prints very well. From your IG post they look good on you. my 2 cents :)

    4. Paisley top is 100% silk. More of a silk twill not super light silk. I think I need the larger of my two sizes as it's a bit snug in the body.
