This is the weekly "Other JCrew-like Retailers" post (similar to the "Off On A Tangent" posts), where we can share our finds from other retailers that have offerings similar to J.Crew (like Anthropologie, LE Canvas, Gap, BR, Talbots, Ann Taylor, and the like.)

If you have recently encountered items that are similar to J.Crew, maybe you might be willing to share that information with us in this post.

Please feel free to share your story on almost any topic— including experiences with certain merchandise pieces, promotions/ offers, in-store visits, transactions with store associates, etc.

  1. If you are looking for something velvet of good quality, I just received the Boden Lorna Velvet Pencil Skirt in the ink blue color. Gorgeous and tailored fit, I.e. not sloppy or frumpy. I sized up.

  2. Everlane and Emerson Fry are getting my money this season. I picked up two of the Everlane pima micro rib scoop necks which will be good with jeans and also under suit jackets for work. The cocoon coat is fabulous. Their $100 cashmere is wonderful quality. I ordered the v-neck sweater in camel. My holiday piece is the Emerson Fry sequin jacket. I previously ordered the black pencil pant.

I'm a Banana Republic credit card holder and hadn't found much to love in recent years. I took a look a couple weeks ago and was delighted to find silk cashmere blend sweaters. I've already worn one of them a few times and am really happy with that purchase.

Someone recommended Taylor Stitch to me and I found my HG black pant there - the Parsons pant. I wear them to work at least once a week.

    1. I’ve seen others recommend Emerson Fry here before but I just checked out their website for the first time now (the mention of a sequin jacket drew me there like the magpie I am!). I had no idea their clothes were made in NYC, that’s amazing. I loved their Army Jacket, Layering Dress, and Moto jackets in linen (and of course the uber-glam Sequin Jacket!). Definitely a site to keep in mind.

    2. Their leopard jacket looks like perfection to me. I forgot who I was discussing it with, I think a JCA has it.
I just ordered the Japanese go weave full length pant from Everlane. I tried two others I did not like but since I took a credit I figure I'll keep trying.
Perfect black pants are hard to find, I don't know Taylor stitch but I'll look.

    3. I have the Emerson Fry leopard jacket and love it. I wear a lot of black and look for pieces to make the black interesting. I get so many compliments on that jacket.

I haven't tried Everlane pants yet. I have a lot of sweaters, tees, shoes, jackets and leather goods. My whole wardrobe is black with selected pieces in white, grey and camel. Their color palette jives with mine.

    4. SunnyDay, I'm pretty much the same but Swap out red for camel and include lots of denim. I'm more likely to do a coat or blazer in a color or pattern aside from above.

  3. Hi JCA's! Just wanted to throw a couple LE reviews out there since their 40% off ends today.

Leopard Jacquard Topper - I ordered my usual JC 4 even though I know LE tends to run bigger. This fit exactly in the shoulders (I could feel a little shoulder pad). The rest of the body is fairly large, which I expected for a topcoat, but it's just too long for me. I'm 5'5" and this hit about 2 inches below my knees. There is no petite size offered for this coat, but I wouldn't go for it anyway because I didn't really love the pattern or thinness of the coat for $150 (never mind the regular price of $249). It seemed to be well made but wouldn't get much wear in my climate.

Long Cardigan Sweater - This is a LE Canvas item. Holy cow, this is the longest sweater I've ever tried on (and I love long sweaters!). It was about 2" higher than my ankles. It's also hard to tell from the item pic, but it is a v-neck sweater coat. 92% merino wool/8% cashmere. I liked the parchment color and it was soft. However, the knit stitch on most of the body looked really snag-prone, and as I checked it out in the mirror I noticed a big snag on the back. I might see if I can just pull it through the other side with a crochet hook. This was about $35 (FP $195) and if you like REALLY long cardigans, I'd go for it.

    1. Thanks for reporting back on the Leopard Topper, silver_lining. LE can be hit-or-miss but I do find some hits at times.

    2. I had been eyeing the leopard topper too. Thanks for your review, sounds like it will be too long on me. Shame no petite sizes. I understand about not loving the pattern, I'm really picky with leopard.

    3. I picked up the long Cardigan Sweater in two colors. For $35 for a wool cashmere blend it is a keeper. It is really long on me as well but I don't mind. Bought one to keep at work and one for home.

  4. I am buying tartan dresses, shirts and accessories at Brooks Brothers. Wool! Who knew?

    1. I did the same, sega61! Polished, natural fibers and tartan! Sadly, all the things J Crew is no longer.

  5. I also have my lands end reviews.
I ordered pleated midi skirts in black satin and gunmetal. For about $30 the quality is really nice. However, they sit very straight on me and hit right below the knee, which is just not flattering for my shape. I ordered my pant size and a size up, both work depending on how high on the waist I want to wear them. If you like pleated skirts these are a great option. I also ordered the tuxedo tops. Not sure if I will keep. They fit and for under $20 are not bad, collarless with a slight bell sleeve, but the fabric is a little stiff so I'll try on, maybe with my pleather skirt.
The last thing is a wrap trench in black that for under $50 is a STEAL. it's lined and although poly definitely looks much nicer. My two issues, it's a little loose and because of hidden snaps difficult to wear open. But a great midweight trench.

  6. Kate Spade has their 30% off promotion this weekend with the code “on purpose.” It’s a great time to try a piece or 2. I have a lot of KS pieces in my wardrobe and love the quality and timelesss and quirky style in everything I have. The new rollout is super cute - navy and stars!
