"Looking to VENT" with J.Crew

This is the weekly "Looking to VENT with J.Crew" post, a place to share our not-so-stellar experiences with J.Crew.

If you have recently experienced a frustrating situation with J.Crew, maybe you might be willing to share that information with us in this post.

Please feel free to share your story on almost any topic— including poor experiences with purchases & orders, promotions/ offers, in-store visits, transactions with store associates, etc.

  1. Ordered the Lace top with pleats during the final hour of Shopfast promo. It’s a cute top. It looks like something French brand Sandro or Sezane would make.

    1. I am curious about this top and am planning to try it on in store as soon as I get my order from 11/24. It's super cute and something different than what we are offered over and over again. Definitely can see the European vibe.

    2. Love the look of that lace top too!

  2. This seems like a weird vent... But I wish there were more jean options. I love toothpick jeans but right now I'm wearing matchstick cords and I wish I had a pair in denim. Or even boot cut. Or wide leg or something. And not cropped jeans.

    1. Agree with you, Miss JR. Why does everything have to be toothpick or cropped? I need new matchstick cords and jeans. The factory ones (straight & narrow) did not work for me. J Crew needs to reissue the matchsticks in denim and corduroy!

    2. Completely agree. I'm 5'7 and 140#, tiny waist but my weight is thighs and booty. I can't wear skinnies - not only do they not look good but they're uncomfortable. JC used to do jeans well -I wish I'd see options for a straight leg (and not be a $200 collaboration with a designer line).

    3. Hi all - I'm also not finding much in JC jeans lately, but for me it's not just fit but fabric. A lot of them feel like pajama jeans, and even the 98% cotton/2% elastene ones aren't as nice as they used to be. I tried the Prescott wash high-rise jeans (H2454) and although I liked the color, they were too stretchy. I also tried the Billies with the frayed hem (H2652) and they seemed nice, but when I compared them to an older pair of JC dark rinse trouser jeans they seemed a lot less substanial - if you stretched the fabric you could see white and this didn't happen with the older jeans. I guess the point is that they're not supposed to hold up and I'm supposed to move on to the next jean du jour, but it's hard enough to find a good fit so when I do I want to hold onto them!

Today I'm wearing the vintage straight jean in Ontario wash from several years ago. 100% cotton, slightly slouchy, no distressing. Got them on eBay for like $15. I know I'm a broken record with eBay, but they have so many pairs of old JC jeans (matchstick, vintage straight, even the old "boy jean") that are very inexpensive.

    4. Ladies, I have had good luck @ Gap. Real straight jeans are a nice fit for me. You have to check the fabric content of each color because some are more stretchy than others. I prefer the ones they call low stretch; not a fan of the pajama jeans type stretchy pant jeans at all. As for corduroys, I am striking out everywhere I go. Need matchsticks to come back!!

    5. @silver_lining, those vintage straights look great! I know I probably couldn't wear them if they sit lower, but the cut of the leg and wash look perfect.
@shopalot +1 for Gap jeans, I've bought some favourite there in the past 2 years. Agree that you really have to watch the fabric contents from style to style and season to season.
I still have some older straight leg jeans I got at Costco of all places (Calvin Klein and DKNY) that I wear a lot in fall/spring when I wear shoes that don't look good with skinnies/cropped. the CKs aren't my favourite but do the trick, but the DKNYs are a more substantial denim that I love and wear most often. Most of Costco's denim is complete dreck, but every now and again there's a hidden gem.

    6. Hello Ladies, I recently purchased the madewell slim straight jeans/drop-hem edition in Tall and love them. I got tired of skinny jeans and these are a good alternative. Would recommend taking the smaller of your JCrew skinny jeans size and if you are taller than 5.5 get a tall for extra length.

    7. Ok, so I have a teen at home(15)... she does like jcrew jeans, but the gap jeans are great... and American eagle, AE is new to us but the jeans are cute and many options... I personally love 7 jeans and citizen of humanity.... I think those are the best ever...

    8. I love Paige Hoxton Ultra Skinny jeans, but I recently discovered that I can wear the Lookout High Rise style, too. Paige can be super $$$, so I keep an eye out for mega deals.

    10. Completely understand about the skinny jeans. I do like the Prescott color jeans but I tried the same 9" in white and charcoal and those didn't work so well - felt like denim hosiery; I think a different manufacturer? I do have the Boy jeans and the Vintage Straight in Ontario and I'm so glad I've saved those over the years. I feel like these old styles are from a golden era that will never return.

Also saw the black Jackie with the beaded collar in the store. I had ordered it during the promo and was looking forward to it. Not so much now, the collar is full of some sort of plastic pieces, it looks super cheap. I already know I won't be keeping that sweater and what a shame.

    11. I was eyeing that black Jackie cardigan too. I tried it in store with the foil-dot gold shirt. Looked super cute for the holidays. The jackie was very poorly made, and the one I tried showed signs of pilling and some of the beads looked uneven. I was put-off. I ended up with neither.

  3. I know this is a common vent, but of course the items I wanted popped back after the sale is over! I even called Madewell to see if they would honor the price and they refused to do so. It is so frustrating when they do this, it makes me want to send back everything I bought over the past week!

    1. one thing I tried, the same thing happened to me and the item I wanted sold out, is asking CS if they would honor the price if the item popped back, during the promo, and they said they would. So maybe if you try emailing CS during next time?

    1. Interesting note that last night the paisley pant was available in every size but 2, with the poly description. The review I left is not on the website yet but I did say they were silk, not poly, and that I would not have purchased them if they were poly. Now the description is updated and they are sold out in every size but 00.

Also, they are not online only as described. I saw them in store before they were on the website, and then continually scoured the site to find them.

  5. Speaking of jeans, I went into the Columbus Circle store last night and they had a whole table of Madewell jeans out. I feel like they're giving up on their own product. If I wanted Madewell jeans I could shop at Madewell. Even worse, they just did a really horrible renovation of the Flatiron/5th Ave store where half the space on the main selling floor is taken up by a new "Denim Bar" and "Pant Shop" [for work pants] Thus, at the height of the holiday season, the main colors you see as you walk into the space are...black, gray, and dark blue. It was such a buzzkill. Punctuated by a few non-seasonally appropriate colors in items such as the pink winter parka and lavender velvet ruffled mini skirt. They are so confused, they no longer know who they are or what season they are in. It felt like a cross between Madewell and Old Navy...in the springtime.

    1. Speaking of ON in the spring, they teased their "Spring '18 showroom" two weeks ago on their Insta.

  6. I was waiting to buy the charcoal velvet tee from Factory (H1184) until the Cyber Monday promo, but even though they repeatedly sent me e-mails telling me it was in my cart, it completely disappeared from the website, and if you type the product page URL it's an error page.

    1. Oh also the full mini skirt in tartan doesn't come in tall- I ordered it in regular and it's sooo short. I'm 5'4" and I couldn't bend forward at all without worrying about the back being indecent. Mini indeed. I'd order up a size or 2 so you can wear it lower on the waist, but the volume of the skirt would probably be pretty unflattering then. Shame, because the print is very nice.

    2. bummer on that tartan skirt - when I saw it in the catalog it looked longer and I was hoping for a full knee length skirt but I definitely can't do the mini at 5'8" if it's too short for you at 5'4".

  7. small issue,
I found that Chocoholic T, in store and the store is sending to my sister, however according to JC.com when I called them there is not a way to get a tracking # emailed to me.

Huh, shouldn't that be generated once the shipping is done.

Have to say the sales help has been really pleasant and helpful there in the 4+ transactions I have had since thanksgiving.

  8. I haven't ordered anything for ages. The long sleeve sheath dress in ponte caught my eye. I envisioned it as a perfect work dress. I ordered the Tall size since I knew from experience that the regular size would probably be far too short to be professional. This is a work dress. It's in the suiting section. I expected that the Tall size would at least come to my knee. I was wrong. It is a good 3" above my knee. Did I mention I ordered the Tall size??? I'm 5' 7", not incredibly tall. How could a suiting dress intended to be worn in a professional office setting that ends at that length - obviously shorter when you sit down - be considered appropriate? Needless to say, it is going back. My streak of no successful orders from J. Crew continues.

  9. J crew and Madwell have been incredibly slow on shipping right now. I know it is the holiday season, but other retailers have shipped items out right away and I have received them in 2-3 days. I'm still waiting on J crew items from a week ago to ship out. Once they actually ship it will be another 4 days, so J crew items are taking over 10 days to arrive.
