JCA "Help Style Me!" Weekly Post

This is the weekly "Help Style Me!" post, where we can share items we are having trouble putting outfits together with. Elaine (in this post) says it best, "You know, that thing you bought because you love it and you keep pulling it out and then putting it away without wearing it?"

Please share your J.Crew item (either that you own or are thinking about getting) that you would love help creating an outfit with.

Also, please help out by offering your styling advice. Feel free to include links to your blog (where you incorporated that piece) or to Polyvore (where you showcased an outfit with that piece). Thanks in advance! :)

  1. Just wanted to say a big thanks to all the JCAs that gave me feedback on how to style my Iridescent Sequin Shift dress (C9237) two weeks ago. The wedding was last weekend and I ended up going for it with the suede jacket as none of my sweaters really worked. It turned out to be a perfect combo for both the weather and the venue: a sunny, cool fall day, in a rustic-style church overlooking the river. With a light wool scarf I was warm enough to not need an overcoat going to/from the ceremony, and when the dancing started in the tiny reception hall, there was no jacket required! It wouldn’t have worked for a more formal wedding, but the suede was the perfect foil to the glam sequins so I didn’t feel overdressed, and the boxy, casual fit of dress brought the sequins down a bit too. Thanks again to all who took the time to offer suggestions, I really appreciate it!

  2. Any thoughts on styling the velvet bomber jacket? I can't figure out what tops work under it (that isn't a button down!), but it's just so cute! :)

  3. How would you style the white button up with velvet bows so that you don't look like the waitstaff?

  4. I would pair it in a few ways:
    1) tucked in with high waisted denim (skinny or flare depending on your proportions), a wool schoolboy blazer or Harlow cardi, cute black heels
    2) tucked into a colorful wool No 2 Pencil Skirt, a black or patterned Jackie cardigan, low block heels
    3) for a more festive look - tucked into the velvet mini, black tights, black pointed toe pumps, oversized black or tweed blazer
    4) untucked over colorful wool slim cropped pants, black booties or flats, denim jacket, skinny silk scarf left loose under the collar of the shirt

    1. Good suggestions.

I wonder if wearing that shirt with say jeans and leopard print booties or flats would work too.

    2. Those are good suggestions and I think I have enough in my closet to work from- thank you! I think it comes down to having a layer on top and not just black on the bottom. I do like the idea of incorporating leopard too. I'm going to try it on and play around with it.
