Take an Additional 20% Off at J.Crew!

A big "thanks!" to rcb.shops (in this post), Marietta, Misty Lynn, as well as Erika, via Pink Peonies, who shared the following promotion from J.Crew with us.

J.Crew is offering customers an additional 20% off with promo code BLOOM. This offer applies to regular, promotional, and sale priced merchandise. This offer expires May 15, 2013.

This is a pretty amazing deal! Definitely worth checking out J.Crew's website for new arrivals (and pop-backs in the sale section).

Will you be taking advantage of this promotion? Are there any items you are interested in? If so, please share! :)

  1. Hi Alexis and JCAs. I find this pretty funny: JCrew gave this code to the blogger at Pink Peonies (who gets "courtesy" items for product placement, apparently, and who appears to me to be a new "style" blogger.

The purpose of course wd be to see what her readership amounts to and whether it's worth their while to keep promoting her. Of course, now that the JCAs know about it, the number of sales with this code will be hugely biased...

So, we're damned if we do and damned if we don't.

    1. Maqsad: I totally understand where you are coming from. :) Ultimately, I thought it would be better if JCAs knew about the code and saved some money if they so choose to. Every bit helps. :)

Frankly, I do not understand J.Crew. They made it clear they would not work with bloggers (and told employees not to share any info with bloggers, no photos in store, etc.) and yet they do indeed work with some bloggers.

Thank goodness for the JCA community itself- who provides each other with the latest info! It really is an amazing resource. :)

    2. Hi Alexis! No question, the strength of our community here is unparalleled and far more valuable to us (& J Crew!) - I am excited there's a code, and I always appreciate getting info here... I just find their misconceptions funny at best, sad at worst.

  2. @maqsad -- I actually thought about that too and am not sure what the right answer is. I was actually wondering if the promo would get pulled once we all knew about it (maybe it will?). It kind of bugs me though that some would benefit from the discount when others wouldn't know about it. Curious what others think (especially the bloggers out there).

    1. rcb.shops: I thought about whether or not the promo would get pulled. But I thought if its out there with an expiration date, then it will probably stay up until then. (At least let the JCAs use it while they can.) And lastly, thank you for sharing that promotion with us. I know that it will definitely help out some of us with our purchases. :)

  3. I just tried the code because my husband desperately wants a summer suit, but it's hard to justify the price for something he will only wear twice for the weddings we are attending. The code does NOT work on suiting. Bummer.

    1. EP: Sorry to hear you could not use it on the suiting collection. :( But thanks for letting us know that certain items are restricted. I have a feeling now that some things don't work, that it includes collaborations too.

  4. J. Crew has been VERY interesting in their work with bloggers. I have seen very little on their part to RT or promote any bloggers via Twitter (other retailers like LOFT, Talbots and Land's End have RT'ed me for mentioning I'm wearing their clothes in an outfit post). I've seen Madewell have events with bloggers (I think Jessica from What I Wore and Sydney from the Daybook Blog had store events), and Rachel from the Pink Peonies also had a J. Crew store event a few months ago. Personally, as a blogger with a smaller audience, but a massive passion for J. Crew, I find it disheartening that they don't support everyone - and cater to a select number of blogs. Rachel's style is lovely but she shares little about her life and how she can afford such expensive pieces (she routinely wears Louboutins and carries a Celine tote, among other very expensive brands). I like blogs that give me a window into someone's life. If I wanted great styling, I just open up a J. Crew catalog.

    1. Catherine: I agree, it is definitely interesting to see who J.Crew works with and who they ignore. It does seem with Madewell though, that they allow for local stores to team up with local bloggers.

However, I notice that it is different for J.Crew. I remember a few instances where a local store teams up with a local blogger, and I post about it then the store and/or blogger will get in trouble with corporate. But this was awhile back, not sure if J.Crew corporate is like this today.

    2. I completely agree with you Catherine! I liked Pink Peonies' blog better before she got more "famous" and when she shared a little more about her life and wore more achievable outfits (although she still wore a lot of expensive pieces it wasn't to the degree that it is now...her shoes and purses are completely unrealistic). I also like how Madewell teams up with local bloggers (Chasing Davies is another example).

    3. Thank you - I'm glad my comments weren't taken the wrong way! Atlantic-Pacific is another blog I love for styling only - but I hate it how they give nothing away as far as their personal lives! I love expensive clothes as much as the next girl, but I also know it's a lot more realistic for my budget (and probably most people's) to shop at Target and Old Navy too.

      Delete
    4. I think Blair at Atlantic-Pacific works for Tory Burch. She probably is the recipient of gifts from other designers like Valentino, too. One thing I like about her is that she answers questions when they are posted on her blog or on Instagram.

Rachel on Pink Peonies, does she ever answer any questions when they are submitted on her blog? If so, I've never seen her replies. Although I read her blog, I can't say I'm all that impressed with her styling most of the time (the hair seems out of control, the lipstick too extreme, and the heels are too high). And that Celine bag - ugh. Most of her bags are not attractive, IMO. I just follow her blog because I am interested in seeing the JCrew clothing!

      Delete
    5. Blair answers questions?? That is SO interesting! I felt exactly like you feel about Rachel's blog AND Blair's blog as I've never seen either of them (nor Cupcakes + Cashmere) answer ANY questions and I find that off-putting. Just pretty pictures, no life, and no interactions with their readers=pretty dull, IMO. I am floored at how many people even bother to comment. It just feels so one-sided and pointless.

      Delete
    6. bug pin, I think you hit the nail on the head for me as to why I am not interested in the big, fancy blogs that just post professional photos of outfits with little else: they do seem one sided and pointless (other than the blogger's point, which I assume is to make a living, which is all well and good.)

Then again, I have always been one to skip over the fashion editorials in magazines, and I don't buy into advertising hype. I'd much rather read all the JCAs' reviews and learn what a product is really like before purchasing, not just go by how pretty it can look on a blog or in a catalog or magazine.

      Delete
    7. Blair has answered some questions about the merchandise, which is cool, IMO. A lot of her outfits though are just 'over the top' but I still like looking at the photos from an artistic perspective.

Rachel on Pink Peonies, I think sort of copies Blair to some extent. All the arm candy, that's exactly what Blair does and it's sort of her signature. I've decided to drop following her blog because it just doesn't seem that interesting.

  5. I think J. Crew would be nuts to pull this promo since it obviously is going to help up their sales. I bet they don't, but who knows with our lovely Crew. :P

Regarding the "pink peonies only" code, I wonder how she feels about it being shared. Hmm. I don't follow her blog, but I know many of the JCAs here do and it obviously was going to come here sometime during the promotion period.

Last year I was given a weekend only code just for my blog from Boden for folks to use to get an additional 20% off items. This was only 5% more off than what people normally get with the coupons running on my sidebar, but that was all it took, there was a lot of activity that weekend and the sales were wonderful for Boden.

The other folks who love Boden, bloggers and FB people, were able to use the coupon in my sidebar, discover the code (usually is a four digit alpha or numeric code) and then display that info on their blogs and/or FB. It bothered me not one whit since I knew it was making a whole lot of fans of Boden happy to have the additional % off.

Having said all this, Boden is far more reasonable about marketing and its presence on the internet. J. Crew definitely is more standoffish and is not exactly known for being super-friendly to the "little people." Love your clothes, J. Crew, don't know that I love the attitude.

Remember when Alexis received a JCA code for her anniversary on this blog? That was awesome and I wish they would do that yearly, since you do so much for this brand and for all the people who adore J. Crew. :)

    1. Agreed. There is simply no comparison to the quality of the writing and information presented by this blog. If JCrew wants to work with bloggers that are established and respected, why not start with JCA and the members of its blogroll. You all have have earned your credibility. Just wish that JCrew showed a bit more respect for our beloved JCA. Since I don't have a dog or blog in this particular hunt, I felt that could speak freely.

    2. Dina: I think it is great that Boden works with you & fans of the brand. It definitely speaks volumes about them.

I also remember when J.Crew offered a "happy birthday" code for the JCA blog-aversary. It was such a nice surprise.

Magistra: I agree about working with bloggers on the JCA Blog Roll more. For example, Gigi's weekly real life guide (with links to her and other JCAs blogs) has definitely caused me to make more purchases at J.Crew.

    3. I like that Boden works with you and your readers, Dina. You put a lot of time and energy into thoughtfully reviewing and presenting their products. J. Crew IMO should look past what's "popular" in the flashy sense and look at the readership here and at the thoughtful and authentic J. Crew review blogs that the readers here visit.

  6. Although it doesn't seem the case with the bloggers who've posted above, my first assumption was that Pink Peonies would be getting commission from sales using the code. If that were the case, I wonder if it might benefit her that the code spreads across the web?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. That would be interesting, especially for J.Crew to consider doing since they do not work too much with bloggers.

I know when they offered the JCA blog a code for its blog-aversary one year (many, many years ago), it was *not* commissioned based.

  7. I wasn't sure about the efficacy of the code now, since I am guessing it was designed to test her appeal as a blogger. Now many non Pink Peonies readers will have the code too. Really, the strength of this community is driving the numbers!

  8. After a long day, I've been looking to do some retail therapy (albeit online) and this code is a nice bonus but there's NOTHING that I want to buy! I have an older button down in my shopping cart right now but definitely not worth the shipping, even with 20% off. If the code doesn't do well, it's not because of the blogger's lack of popularity -- perhaps it's because the products are leaving us wanting?

    ReplyDelete

    1. I agree. I probably would much prefer to use a JCA code, and wouldn't want to use a code that potentially gives Pink Peonies commission, I might have been tempted if there was a single thing I was interested in right now, but there simply is not! I shop a lot, so I don't need anything, but there's nothing in J. Crew's offerings that are catching my eye right now.

  10. As much as I love a sale and God knows I do, I would not use a code to help Pink Peonies get commission. I have very strong feelings about her blog and it upsets me to no end that J.Crew doesn't partner with more deserving blogs IMHO.

    1. In my opinion, she takes too much from the catalogs and from bloggers like Atlantic Pacific for me to see her as an original.

    2. Agreed. I won't be using this code.

      Delete
    3. I agree with Caroline (of course haha) - once you wear something head to toe, it's a lot harder to have any originality. While being somewhat loyal to a brand is of course understandable, as a styling blogger it would be nice to see a range of items from a range of price points.

Keep up the good work ladies - I always check in with you before I make any JC purchase!

  11. There is nothing I really want right now and 20% off is not enough of a lure for me, plus the fact that this is a promo code specifically for Pink Peonies makes me uncomfortable

As it so happens, I gave up on following big-name bloggers like Atlantic-Pacific at the beginning of the year (I wrote about it here). (When I mean big-name bloggers, I mean those who have a large enough following to merit getting gifted items and special promos from major brands.) I have never followed Pink Peonies but it sounds like she falls into the same category. The thing that started to get to me is that the outfits presented by these ladies are great to look at but the styling is completely over the top and out of step with real life - who can walk around all day in 4" stiletto heels and piles of jewellery heaped on each wrist and still feel comfortable? Plus, when so much of the outfit is "courtesy of", I started to wonder whether it's a true reflection of that person's style or a clever marketing scheme. Whatever the case, l haven't looked back since unsubscribing from those blogs and my sense of self and my bank account have been a lot healthier since then.

    1. Louise: I know what you are saying! AP is a beautiful woman who wears beautiful things, and she wears them beautifully. I do follow her, but I recognize I cannot pull off what she wears. For her job (in the fashion industry), it makes sense. For my field, not so much. ;)

She is more like the J.Crew catalogs during the fashion years where you just look at the outfit and pick out one or two pieces to wear. Or get an outfit idea to water down into everyday wear.

Lastly, the over-abundance of c/o items on certain bloggers definitely makes me look twice at the item in a cautious way.

  12. I really don't understand the comments on here about the pink peonies blog. I love reading pink peonies daily. I think she does a nice job on her blog and has fantastic style. She has featured a lot of j crew clothing on her blog from the very beginning. She has a large following and has even been featured on her local tv news. Clearly jcrew likes her image and feels she represents jcrew well. Every designer markets their target audience and has a reputation they want to achieve. Jcrew markets to a higher income clientele- proven by their collection pieces. If they give her the pieces for free- who cares! I still want to see how she styles it. I love coming to this site daily for reviews and general information, but I can't believe the comments on here about a fellow successful blogger. I hope jcrew continues to work with her because I think she represents the jcrew woman very well and as a fellow business woman I wish her great success. Women should empower woman- not tear them down.

  13. Totally agree with Katie, and for the record I know when an affiliate link is placed on a site because I'm a blogger, she usually has them but in this post there are no tracking links. I think J.Crew feels her image and theirs are in sync and that's why they work with her. I don't understand why people have to be so negative about others success.

  14. After reading the comments, I checked PP blog, in my opinion her style has nothing to do with j.crew. So it is all about marketing and not style and it is up to us to follow or not. Beside JCA I follow Garance Dore blog that is what blogs should all be: fashion, life, traveling etc.
Anyway a discount code is always appreciated.

    1. Pink peonies wears a lot of j crew clothing with other brands- it's how she styles it. I have no problem if you read her blog or not, but why do people feel its necessary to bash her. And those other blogs you follow sound great for you and I'm sure they are very nice blogs. Again it's your opinion "that's how all blogs should be". I am into fashion- I have ZERO interest in a fashion bloggers travel or life.

    2. Indeed she wears a lot of j.crew clothes, but as we say in Italy where I live she is " burina". I am glad she is doing great, but as you mentioned we are interested in real fashion and not marketing.
      P.S.
Garance Dore travels because she is invited to all the fashion shows around the world and she did and does interviews with designers: Jenna Lyons rings anything?

  15. It never crossed my mind that Pink Peonies would get a commission from the code. She has affiliate links in place, so I assumed that would be a source of reward. I have affiliate links too, but don't have experience working with companies to get free items in the way that style bloggers do. So I have no idea if a commission is given specifically for the code itself. My guess is this is a test to see how powerful her social network is and, perhaps, if they want to keep working with her. The joke is that once it hits JCA, *that's* how it truly goes viral. That's a fact.

I don't think PPeonies is being bashed so much as the question arising about her genuine interest in all of the items she wears, given that many of them are gifted these days. I admit I chuckle when I see the disclaimer, "This is a sponsored post, but opinions are my own." Who will bite the hand that feeds them? Over time, I've learned which bloggers will tell you if that furniture stain actually did the job well or not, even if they did get it for free. If some of the big style bloggers gave more insight on how the clothing/accessories wore thruout the day or over a long period of time, that would create a trustworthy climate. At least for me. I figure I only know a smidge of what they're presenting online and remember when I visit their sites. I was astonished to learn that some have agents, etc... I imagine part of their business model is accepting the merch to be seen in it via their blog. Product placement. The big bloggers aren't often reviewers. They show their outfits, period. We don't know if they shoot them all in one day, once/week or are truly wearing these looks irl or what.

I believe the major problem JCAs have with J Crew blogger collabs is that this site continues to be ignored. In interviews, there's even been eyerolls about bloggers. In contrast, other companies have acknowledged their missteps & successes with social media. Not J Crew. For a company who wants to lead the way in fashion, they have very closed minded views about social media which is critical point in retail these days. Surely there's a way to reach the new, younger fans they crave without alienating their core fan base.

Alexis started JCA a few months before a major website overhaul. I strongly believe J Crew retained customers thru that transition *because* of this community. Per usual, we figured things out by sharing our experiences thru the JCA network. As much as I love J Crew, I agree with others that they could show more love to the fans here.

    1. Gigi: I think you and others are right about the code being a "test" for J.Crew to see how influential a blogger may be in selling / promoting J.Crew. It will be interesting to see if they do something similar again.

Also, thanks for the kind words on the JCA blog -and all the JCAs and their blogs. Part of me is surprised when we get ignored, and the other part of me is not surprised at all. 16. Everyone has the right to their opinion and read whatever blog they want to, but to bash another blogger is just unnecessary. I love her style and could care a less if she got the item for free. I could care a less if she likes it because she's not giving her opinion. It's no different than looking at models in a fashion magazine for styling ideas. I like this blog and come here for reviews, however there are negative reviews on here too- maybe Jcrew doesn't want to collaborate with any negative comments about their product. Maybe in the future they'll collaborate with JCA. If they do start giving JCA free stuff and it was featured I would be thrilled not judgmental. My only point was to be supportive of each other, especially as women. Btw I like your blog too and read it daily!

  21. I think fashion bloggers are best compared to a fashion magazine: some are like the editorial spreads at the back at the magazine (beautiful to look at, often inspiring, but often not super applicable to daily life) and some are like the features in the front pages on what type of skirt fits your body type, how to dress for particular events, what's trending, what's new, etc.

I also want to add my thanks to Alexis for keeping this blog going on a daily basis. It's always very helpful and I enjoy hearing from others that love J.Crew as much as I do!

  22. Chiming in with more JCA love. Alexis, I have been reading daily since you started, and you are amazing.

Many marketers have a love-hate relationship with social media, and J. Crew appears to be one of them. While some are comfortable with the good and the bad of user-generated content and accept that consumers today "co-create" a brand, J. Crew remains on the fringes.

The very reasons that we love THIS blog - honest feedback, product reviews that reflect a 360 degree experience w an item after a day of wear or washing,IRL photos, pricing and inventory comments, etc. - have the potential to make J. Crew really nervous. JCA is very powerful that way!

It's much easier for them to stomach a collab w a blogger like PP because it's easier to control the content when products are merely shown and styled but rarely critiqued.

  23. I am not a follower of Pink Peonies although I think it's great she has turned her blog into a business, I'm personally not all that interested in how someone styles a ton of different outfits from different designers and "loves" all of them, I have magazines for that. I like JCA because it's real world reviews, sale notifications etc. I not only want to hear about how cute the shoes were but also did they hurt after a few hours? Does that cute dress have a design flaw? I love looking like I stepped off a photo shoot (or at least feeling like I did, perhaps delusionally) but also real world reviews since that means a lot to me.

    1. I completely agree. JCA is fantastic because of the product reviews by customers, you don't get that on those other sites (JCrew website I'm looking at YOU especially!). These bloggers are simply modeling the garments and it's left up to your imagination about fit, quality of construction, and comfort level (shoes).

    2. Thanks Katertott & Vava! :) I agree that its nice to hear honest reviews from fans of the brand. And detailed to boot! Sometimes JCAs give measurements on items that J.Crew's own sales team cannot. (How many times did a skirt or dress look like it hits the knee on a (tall) model, to find out it in fact is above the knee in real life.) ;)

  24. I'm really interested to know how J.Crew plans to track Pink Peonies "blogger influence" now that the BLOOM code is all over the internet. It would really surprise me if she got a commission every time the code is used...J.Crew would essentially be promoting her as a "brand representative" with a move like that, and that seems out of character for them, imo. Times are changing, I guess.

I don't follow PP...her style is way too "Real Housewives of McMansionville" for my taste. If J.Crew is going to start promoting the bloggers who wear their clothes, I do hope they branch out with their selection a little bit b/c there are more interesting and creative bloggers out there. Alexis, you are a true class act and always have been. I've been reading for a very long time and have always counted with the best information and reviews. Can't thank you enough.

Let me also clarify what I wrote earlier. I am in no way bashing PP or her success. Honestly, I couldn't care less. I stopped reading her blog and following her Instagram because she never answers her readers and when there are critical comments, she just deletes and blocks people. If they were insulting her, I could understand but they were asking questions.

I would just rather see J.Crew supporting blogs that do a lot for the brand and bloggers who care about their readers enough to respect them and answer their question. This is just my humble opinion.

  26. Wow, based on the comments on here people missed my point of women empowering women. Let me clarify, I said I like this blog and read it daily! I appreciate the reviews and use it as a resource. I guess I'm different- I don't find the need to bash others blogs or make rude comments about them. If I was on another blog and they were bashing JCA I would defend it too! It's rude and unnecessary-especially when you're using her promo code. "Her style is too real housewives of mcmansionville"- how rude and hateful. My style is similar to hers and that's completely offensive. I'm really disappointed in some of the comments on here. It's unfortunate because I love coming here and being part of this community.

  27. Katie, I have to disagree with you. I think the comments on this post have been pretty respectful of PP. There are certainly other places on the internets that are less restrained in their opinions of PP.

I think it's interesting that JCrew chose PP to be the blog discount "guinea pig". In the beginnings of her blog, she was very much "straight out of the JCrew catalog / mold", however, recently her style has veered towards higher priced designer brands and partnerships. Personally, I preferred her site back then, but I drink the Crewlade weekly and have little kids, so the Celine and the Loubs aren't particularly practical for my lifestyle.

I adore this site, and prefer many of the regular posters on this site's "small time" blogs, as they share fitting room pics and reviews. Just my two cents.

  28. To be totally fair, I've only skimmed through the comments but I can't find anything that seems like a "hateful" attack on that particular blog (including the comment about her style being a little real housewives, which I just took to mean quite extravagant). I don't think it's a crime to say that you prefer reviews and personal tidbits to editorial content. JCA is a fantastic resource for those of us looking for reviews. I can't even tell you how helpful you all were when J.Crew wasn't yet in Canada and I had to order everything blind. Thanks so much for your great help!!

  29. I have looked at any fashion blogs or bought any clothes this year. Got other things I'm spending my money on. So I was interested to check out Pink Peonies. She used to be a cute high school looking girl....my how fame and some free cheap rags can change a gal! She's trying so hard to be a mini-me of that gal that does Atlantic-Pacific. How sad. And I had to laugh out loud when I saw her Cabo vacation. So that's what these girls do on vacation? They take tons of ugly cheap outfits with them and pose for pictures? It's all so superficial. None of it seems to be real....it's more like watching a bad movie with bad fashion.

    1. I think that Cabo vacation was a promotion for a group of fashion bloggers - a freebie, for sure. Sort of like a business trip. I, too, think she is trying to mimic Blair from AP.

    2. Straycat, I have missed you and your honest opinion.

    3. Jealousy is ugly. I guess if you vacation in Cabo or take vacations you're not a real or good human being. I'm sure there are a lot of people who come to this site, including me, who vacation throughout the year and like to wear nice clothing. What you said is offensive and rude. Clearly she has a different lifestyle from you- does that make her life wrong or less important? It's no different than if I judged you for your lifestyle. I didn't know this was a site to put other people's style and lifestyle down. And I can't believe JCA is not taking these hurtful comments down. These comments are not only offensive to PP, but I'm sure some of your readers who may live the same lifestyle are becoming offended. Do you think j crew would want to work with a blogger that allows these posts. Straycats comment is rude, hateful and quite frankly it's ignorant to judge someone else's lifestyle. I thought this was a site to review j crew clothing. I was done commenting on this, but this comment is intolerable.

  30. I caught the Barbados Dress on popback in my size yesterday, so I'm going to give it a try. Love that I got it with the extra % off, too. :)

Alexis, thank you again for all you do maintaining the JCA blog, and for keeping us all updated with the latest J.Crew news. You are greatly appreciated!

    1. I have the Barbados dress and love it, it's one of my favorite purchases from JCrew. I thought so many of their dresses were boring the past few rollouts but that one caught my eye. It's not a dress I would throw on to run errands but a special dress I'll wear a few times every summer for vacations and parties.
