J.Crew Reviews {straight from the JCAs!}

This is the weekly "J.Crew Reviews {straight from the JCAs}" post, to help each other share our reviews.

So if you have recently purchased, or stopped by a J.Crew store to try on an item (or two) from J.Crew, maybe you might be willing to share that information with us in this post.

Also, this request is not just limited to clothes. Please feel free to discuss bags, shoes, jewelry, accessories, etc.

In particular, if you could mention a few of the noteworthy details like fit, size, fabric, and the like— that would be fantastic! Thanks in advance! :)

  1. I'm wondering about the Janey patent flats. Are they comfy? Long break in period? I'm not super familiar with JCrew shoes so any input appreciated. Read a few reviews online, but they are a bit conflicting!

  2. I tried them on a while back and needed to size up half a size for a good fit. HTH

    1. I bought these in red and blue. Beautifully made and all leather. They look like the repetto flats but half the price and much much better quality. The shoes are also more comfortable than the classic ballet flats since the toes are covered. I wear 7.5 in jcrew heels and the regular leather Kiki I needed a 6.5 . Hope this helps!

  8. The Factory stripe boatneck tee item 50702 is an excellent deal at today's current promo price of $19.50. The neckline is cut a little lower in front than last years non-factory version, which makes it more flattering imo. Runs tts, 100% cotton-not too thick but def. not thin - nice weight. Hits mid to low hip, 3/4 sleeves. Took my regular size small in factory tops & it fits tts. Love it!

  9. Love the little emergency kit. I got it in the cork material with my card holder 20% off as well as the seahorse tee. (I did not like the seahorse shirt--glad I saw it in person. Fabric way to heavy, thick and not soft. Would have been a return if I had ordered it online!)

  11. Here is a review of the Factory printed cotton skirt (succulent green color) and the Linen Tippi whale sweater. Bottom line, loved both and found them both to be true to size. :)

  13. A few things ...
The J Crew pencil wrap skirt (pink/navy stripes) is lovely but not on me. It is on sale and would look great on a woman with a small frame. I'm size 12 and sending it back because it looks awkward on me. It's something about the cut. I'd love to see a regular pencil skirt in this fabric.

The Jennifer Meyer cuff is over the top lovely. It has a hinge at the back. The gold is just right, the colours are pale and it has dainty proportions. My main concern is that I don't get it all scratched up. Wish I could get all of her stuff.

Finally, I also have the Sousie top in deep aubergine. Love the colour. I hope to see more of it -- I'd love a Tippi cardigan to match.

    1. Oh crap. That lovely Jennifer Meyer bracelet that I just got this morning already had one of the little panels fall out. So... I'm not buying any more of that stuff. For the record, I've been sitting at a computer working. It just fell out. They must have attached it with some cheap kind of glue. : (

    2. That's really bad! J. Crew should replace that for you (or take it back if you prefer).

  15. My two cents on a few items...

Ratti Regatta shorts: Substantial material, a bit of stretch as advertised, unlined but doesn't need a lining. This has a 4" inseam but I was surprised to see that there is a cuff at the bottom. It is only stitched on the inside and outside, so if you want an extra inch, I think you could snip these threads and they'd be 5" inseam.

Hawaiian Sunset linen shorts. These are short (3" inseam) but it didn't bother me that much. They are lined in navy blue cotton. The main problem I have with these shorts is that there are no belt loops. My waist size fluctuates and this could be a deal breaker for me. On the other hand, I love the colors in this print so I think I might find a way to live with the lack of belt loops. I should choose one of these pairs of shorts and send the other back, but so far I can't decide which I like better.

Vacationland Blouse. I love this to pieces. Definitely a keeper. I don't think I would wear it like this, but I tried it on with the Hawaiian Sunset shorts and I liked it. There should have been some color clashing going on but I didn't notice it. The blouse reads more like a neutral than a print.

    1. I love the Ratti shorts. Nice material, fun and bright colors, and flattering length and style. Keeping them.

I'm returning the Swiss dot tuxedo blouse. It's stiff and the dots are oddly bulky and squished together. Also, the collar is odd. Like a real tuxedo shirt.

  16. 4" Chino short in Colorblock. I thought I'd love these, but I really didn't. They are ivory with a wide navy stripe across the widest part of my body. Not the most flattering. They are nice otherwise, though. I may re-buy them if they go on sale and if I lose some weight :)

Linen Color Study tee. Meh. It's okay but it's going back. I don't need another ivory colored tee, even if it is linen. I love the feel of the linen and I wish they'd do a graphic linen tee in a darker color.

  17. Just made a trip to the store and walked away with a few shirts on the wishlist!! There are some cute ones out (finally)

Graphic Eyelet Tee – Not crazy about this one. Its a tad too short and boxy, but nothing crazy. What I didn’t like is that the arms are pretty tight. Not horribly so. If you have smaller arms you should be ok. Fit Pics Here

Lightweight Terry Tee in Floral Anchor – I’m not crazy about anchors or anything, but this is pretty cute. The fabric is a lighter weight terry and is super comfy. Finally, something you can’t see through! This would be great for summer and you could layer under it come fall. Fit Pics Here

Ikat Popover (45377) – I had high hopes for this top because the colors are adorable and the fabric is so soft and cozy. I had to try it on in the 2 because that was the smallest they had. Well, it fit “off.” It was oddly tight across my shoulders. Maybe I just got a bad one, but just be aware. Fit Pics Here

Eyelet Dot Tank (76808) – This top is adorable. I’m wearing an xxs here and it fits wonderfully. Its just long enough and snug enough. The only thing that bugs me is that you can see my pink bra through it. It might be ok with a nude bra. I'll definitely be getting this in one of the other colors. Fit Pics Here

I actually only walked away with a sale pair of cropped matchstick jeans in that gray color. I shouldn't have, but the fit great and were a pretty good deal at $50. I really need work pants. Hopefully I can get away with those.

  21. Reviews of the Cafe Capri in Silk Foulard (Anastasia's Flowers) that I got for $91 and the Jeweled Sweatshirt in ivory that I got for $64. Both are going back so if you want either one of them, I can have the store hold it for you when I return it OR I can sell it to you for the price I paid + shipping.

For reference, I am 5-2, about 100 pounds.

Cafe Capri in Silk Foulard - Anastasia's Flowers Size 0. Item 46801.
    http://www.jcrew.com/AST/Navigation/Sale/AllProducts/PRDOVR~46081/99102922133/ENE~1+2+3+22+4294967294+20~~~0~15~all~mode+matchallany~~~~~anastaisa/46081.jsp

This is a really lovely pant. The material is even more beautiful than the online picture - there's bits of yellow as well as pale pink, rose & and blue - this pant would be really versatile as you can wear it during the day or dress it up. The silk is just so heavenly - midweight (not light or heavy).

But the fit is a off for me. Granted, I sized up because my size was not available, but in any event. I don't know how they get the pant to fit the way it does on the model - the legs are way wide on me and I have very slim calves (as I suppose the model would). The legs are just way too boxy. I am wonder if they pin it. The rise is a little odd too - the size 0 sits super low on my hips and it looks great from the side but the front view is really unflattering. Makes my thighs look super wide.
I am 5-2 and it's not capri really - more of ankle length.

A 00 popped up today, which I snagged to see if a tailor can make it work for me, so this one is going back, unless anyone wants it. florapower9@gmail.com

J.Crew jeweled sweatshirt in ivory XXS item 13793. I paid $64
http://www.polyvore.com/crew_white_jeweled_sweatshirt/thing?id=78084868 I was pleasantly surprised by this. The ivory is not see-through - it is a good, solid weight without being too heavy - and the jewels are just darling. They aren't plastic looking or cheap. The cotton is really comfy. If I was childless, I would have worn the hell out of this - it would be just adorable with jeans or a skirt. It's a little casual for professional office but much classier and dressier than normal weekend wear. So back it goes...don't have the disposable income right now to keep it but I will be returning it with a heavy heart.

  22. Carrie dress in Hawaiian sunset: I was pleasantly surprised to find that this dress was made up of a heavier cotton/linen material than I originally anticipated with a soft cotton lining. Huge plus for me…no slips or VPL to worry about and hides flaws. Took my normal size, HOWEVER, I did feel like I resembled a big square. The dress needed to be taken up and in…I had no shape. I don’t think I could have sized down because of my hips/thighs (ugh).

Pilar sandals in Pecan: Pros: Nice neutral color, tts, and comfortable (no squeezing my wideish feet into the straps).Cons: The innersole part of the pairs I looked at were starting to come up, so that turned me off a bit. I don’t want to have to super glue $100 shoes together that are new. These probably were shop worn shoes though, but still. And these were $98 in-store vs. $118 online…weird.

Linen-cotton pant: Took the larger of my sizes (I’m a 4 in cafĂ© capris/skirts and 6 in chinos/pants). Looks so much better once on too. I really dig this material…kind of wish these came in some other colors too…maybe a navy or such.

Misc:I found the Perfect shirt in mint plaid tts and perfect for summer due to the light weight material and colors (aqua, lavender). The Lightweight terry tee in floral anchor was tts, slim fitting, and not too short. I would probably size up if wanting a baggier fit.

  24. Got the Ratti sailboat print capris - it's a but of a meh for me. The material is cotton piqué. Print looks good - way better than on the tank, which is some cheap cotton voile type material. But the cut is that odd loose one that they do on the cafe capris which look bad from the butt down. Narrow leg opening though, so that's a relief. I don't know if I'll keep this. Probably only tempted bc it's a "famed JC/Ratti print".

Swiss dot tux shirt: j'adore! I have the original shirt (it's a popover, so us this one) from way back when and u love it to bits. Same story here. The construction is identical. However.m, someone's idea of a twist: the Swiss dot cloth is used inside out... The dots are squishy side out. Wierd, but okay.

Cafe capris with tuxedo stripe (navy): love these so much, I didn't want to take them off. Perfect fit, narrow enough leg that you can wear them with flats and heels alike. Stretch cloth, beautifully piped. I am tempted to buy two identical pairs! :D

Nolita jacket in white denim: biggest pro: pockets!! Good quality denim; soft but firm (that holy grail of most things in life); good fit; arms super long on my petite frame, but I always roll them up anyway. Not distressed denim this year, which makes me want to keep it. Last year's was distressed.

    2. I posted about the Swiss dot top the other day, first impression, right out of the package and I didn't love it. But, I tried it on again last night and the collar doesn't look too weird on. I still wish the tuxedo placket were not so stiff, but it's growing on me. The Swiss dots being puffy is weird, but it makes the shirt a bit softer. It's also not as see through as I would have thought.

    3. maqsad, I am tempted to buy the navy piped cafe capris. Are you finding much to wear with them? I don't know how I'd style them, it's holding me back from buying them.

    4. I see the Cafe capri with tuxedo stripe comes in regular sizes only. You mention you are petite. How was the length? I usually order Cafe capris in petite because I am 5'3". I really like the look of the tuxedo stripe, but am concerned that they might be too long. I'd appreciate your thoughts. TIA.

  25. Hi ladies!
Blakemdjohns - I saw your review of the tux shirt earlier and was worried abt mine! But like I said, I found mine to be much the same as yesteryear's. I do think the Swiss dot material itself is a touch stiffer (& inside out) but the bib and collar are the same as before. Based on this, I think that perhaps when you wash yours, you'll like it better. FYI, I always line dry my cotton shirts to prevent shrinkage.

Cate: the navy tux pant is a slam dunk for me with whites, of course. Last night I thought it looked great with the tux shirt and the white denim jacket over it and my Viv bow flats (pointy) in mint. The tux shirt was a fun play on the tuxedo-ness of the pants. I'd treat them the way you would any old navy cafe capris... With a blazer, a cardi, a denim jacket or a regular shirt/t-shirt. Also, if you're more Tory Burch oriented, you could do a short tunic top with them. TB's showing such a combo in her look book these days. I love that they're not stiff cloth and they're cut close to the leg. It makes them super versatile.

Maryeb: I always buy regular sized cafe capris (I have a ton of them) and get them custom-shortened through the store if necessary. I find shortening to be especially important with a wide leg or (paradoxically) with a very narrow leg. With the navy cafe capris, the leg is narrow, but not as narrow all the way down as the mint cafe Capri in guilded brocade was. That one, I would have had cropped. These, the leg slopes a touch and has a narrow opening at the end so that it works even with flat shoes on petite me! Having a JC card is a blessing this way (horror!) bc I can always have it shortened if I decide later that it is looking dumpy. I prefer that to buying petite - I find the petite lengths to be too cropped to my non-fashion-editor eye. HTH!

    1. Sorry, Maryeb, to answer your question more precisely: the capris hit at my ankle. I am 5, 2.5". Of course you could also get an exact measurement from CS of the inseam. HTH!
