Today is the last day that J.Crew is offering customers 30% off any purchase from Final Sale {no minimum} and free shipping (over $150 *after* discounts applied) with promo code EXTRA30.
This sale has been a-m-a-z-i-n-g!!! I loved seeing this promotion back, and hope to see it return soon! :)
UPDATE: WTF J.Crew!?! Just got the following email this morning. I noticed the dreaded phrase on it: "All Sales Final".
I know for sure the original sign on the Summer Sale page did not have those words. So I went back and what do I find on the image, the words "All Sales Final" in the fine print too. This phrase was *not* on the original offer (shown in the first image above).
I strongly dislike Final Sale, but recognize that the business practice is up to J.Crew (& they can do what they like). However, I think it is pretty crappy to change the terms of a promotion on the last day. Not cool.
Have you been taking advantage of this promotion? Will you be taking advantage of this promotion today? Are there any sale items you are interested in getting before it ends? Did you notice the change to "Final Sale" today?
Nothing for me this time. I still have a bunch of returns to make from the last promo and the items I would like to get on this promo still aren't available in my size.
ReplyDeleteI've done enough damage lately and am waiting for Fall to start rolling out, which always excites me more than Spring/Summer. But the Tissue Ruffle Tank popped back this AM in Moroccan Spice in my size, always liked that color, now I'm really done!
ReplyDeleteJ.Crew sent an email that mentions the sale is now "Final Sale". :(
ReplyDeleteOh no! I placed an order bright and early this morning around 7AM EST and didn't notice if it said Final Sale yet at that time...
ReplyDeleteWould it be noted in the confirmation email they sent me if it was final sale?
Has anyone seen the Hockney Tote IRL and have any comments about it? I'm thinking about pulling the trigger before the sale ends, but haven't seen it anywhere except online. Thanks!!!
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you mentioned the final sale add-on, which I think is a nasty business move - I went ahead and cancelled my order I'd just placed, because I need to be able to return them. Too bad, J Crew! (there were a few things I'm sure I would have kept, but not for final sale on the rest.)
ReplyDeleteuhh, I better be able to return some of the things I bought ... it did NOT say final sale when the items were in the cart! I would be very upset if they tried some sort of bait-and-switch crap like that! We'll see... getting my first EXTRA30 package tomorrow!
ReplyDeleteI placed a big order on the first day of the promo, so, of course, I nearly died when I saw the 'final sale' note today. Thanks, Alexis, for confirming that the 'final sale' is an add-on today. This change in the sale certainly leaves a bad taste in one's mouth.
ReplyDeleteI was placing a second order for vintage matchstick cords (which I've never tried before) and decided to check JCA for reviews and saw this....WHAT?!! Final Sale BLOWS!!! Just canceled my entire order. How sneaky to throw in that small print when it was not in the original offer!
ReplyDeleteI can't believe they did this! It is truly terrible. I was going to place an order today, but am now confused as whether I should or not. None of the items say final sale in the checkout but maybe they are marking things differently? Does anyone know how final sale is going to be denoted now?
ReplyDeleteThis is terrible business practice. It absolutely feels like bait and switch.
I just placed an order five minutes ago, and it didn't say anything about final sale - not on the checkout page and not in the e-mail, so I'm not worried if I have to make a return - can't add it retroactively, as far as I'm concerned.
ReplyDeleteI placed an order this morning and then saw this post about final sale. I called and canceled my order and was told that the items are not going to be marked as final sale in red like they normally are, but will be final sale if I tried to return them. I did verify that final sale starts with orders placed today and not on the order placed the last couple days.
ReplyDeleteHope this helps!
Seriously: They cannot come AFTER I buy something and tell me, oh by the way, it's final sale - I will stand my ground all the way to the Supreme Court to make my point on that :-) I reiterate: It didn't say so anywhere while ordering the items, it didn't say so on the checkout page, it didn't say so in the e-mail. Grandfather this, Jcrew: You can retroactively bite me.
ReplyDeleteWow, that is really sneaky of them. I'm glad I placed my order Monday! I got the Seaside Madras shirt (hopefully it will fit...I got the lower end of my size range. Thoughts?), Zafrina skirt, a few tees, and the wrapped pearl necklace. Also reordered the toothpick jean in Amore since the price difference from when I bought it was significant.
ReplyDeleteI absolutely agree with LBH - this is beyond ridiculous. They have to denote somewhere on the purchase page/receipt that these items can not be returned. Every other retailer does this when sales are final, why does J. Crew feel that they are exempt? The fine print simply isn't enough to be a good business practice.
ReplyDeleteI'm going to call later today and see what they say about this, but I won't be ordering if the items can't be returned, that is for sure.
I made that point... that it's too sneaky to not have it on the checkout page or email confirmation, but they said it is on the opening page of the sale section. I usually don't reread that page everyday and wouldn't have known my order was final sale if I hadn't seen it here.
ReplyDeleteHate final sale!!
I seriously cannot believe that all of a sudden it's now Final Sale. I placed an order this morning, and I will certainly be calling them at lunchtime to cancel. I didn't even get an email from them saying that they've changed it! And NOWHERE in my confirmation email does it say anything about being FS...
ReplyDeleteHas anyone tried the stretch wool elan trousers? I'm wondering how they fit --- esp now that it's final sale. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteI suggest we all inundate them with calls and e-mails complaining about this sneaky change. In the past, we can tell them, it has been very clearly marked if something is final sale. Putting it in 6-pt type on the front page is an underhanded way to do business. If they get overwhelmed by cancelled orders, at least they know how we feel about their practices!
ReplyDeleteDoes anyone know what time they changed it? Maybe I beat them to it...
ReplyDeleteDefinitely sounds awful. I'm hopeful w/this thought. Maybe they added the language because sales are final in-store. I can't imagine that they would take away the red print that we see online. They don't seem to be able to make programming changes to their site very easily. I can't imagine it was completed & successful. At any rate, adding in the fs language on day 3 is asinine. If you shop from your cart and don't check the splash sale page, you'd never see or know about final sale unless the red print showed up during checkout. J Crew sure does know how to ruin a love affair. They're consist with that.
ReplyDeleteYes, that is pretty sneaky. They used to say final sale in big font on the sale page and then in red on the item pages. Now it still says "summer sale" not "final sale" and only "final sale" in tiny print on the bottom. Not on the item pages either. I think they are going to get a lot of complaints about this.
ReplyDeleteWow! I have one word for this...actually 2...
ReplyDeleteFirstly, PHEW! I placed an order after work last night and got a few tops, bracelet and necklace, and couple pairs of shorts. So according to some of the other posts on this thread, I just squeaked in, and if anything doesn't fit, I can return them.
Secondly...this is ASININE. as in, BAD sales tactic, BAD business practice, BAD BAD BAD J. Crew! Hiding stuff in small print where no one looks? Then sending out an email as a heads-up... do we all have our email inboxes open as we're shopping our little hearts out? ASININE...
All I can say is WOW.... what an underhanded, sneaky way of doing business. If something is Final Sale, then it should say so in red print under the item name, the way it used to. At least then you knew what you were in for. This is beyond ridiculous. I am so glad that I placed two orders on the first day of the promo. I agree with everyone here - BAD BAD BAD JCrew!
ReplyDeleteIn-store yesterday they mentioned it was FS. It's all good, I knew I wanted what I was getting ... but absolutely nothing prevents you from saying your item was a 'gift' and them giving you a merch credit. Which I'm sure a lot of people do. I have had just 1 or 2 issues with FS items and I never had a problem returning either.
ReplyDeleteIf you are going to send out an email make sure it goes to LYNETTE RUSSELL. She is simply INCREDIBLE and works VERY hard to make sure that J Crew shoppers are happy shoppers. I love her!!
ReplyDeleteI wouldn't worry if it didn't say final sale at checkout or on the main sale page of the site at the time you purchased. Many people don't get the emails and only go by the site policies, so they certainly can't enforce something that was only in an email at the time. I am sure customer service would back down on this and if not, just dispute your credit card bill. I definitely will if anything I bought doesn't fit!
ReplyDelete@elaine:
ReplyDeleteI do have to say I tried to pull the "gift" excuse with a pair of see-through white pants I bought. The girl at the store seriously was trying to pull up the person who "sent" them to me by address, name, etc. in their system- and would not let me return them. I think it was due to a price adjustment issues, but it pissed me off. Finally I just said I'll come back later, and returned them at a later time. Just a word of warning: the "gift" thing doesn't always work.
But, on topic- how much do they suck for sneaking in Final sale? Luckily I ordered (re-ordered to get the cheaper price) things on Monday and haven't ordered anything since then. Though their system seems screwed up, and I wasn't given shipping codes with my "your order shipped" email. came home last night to a box with 2 things on my porch. Have about 13 more that will hopefully be there tonight...

ReplyDeleteUGH that is not cool J Crew! I didn't bite on this promo. I received a 20% promo in my latest catalog so I'm waiting for some new arrivals to move to sale before I purchase again. Plus I still have returns from the last round of sale items I purchased.
ReplyDeleteI really don't like that final sale tack-on. Not right.
ooh that is sneaky! Well I just ordered a bunch of things on Monday and it did not say final sale. I bought a few sweaters in 2 different sizes to try on. I'm going to hold them to it.
ReplyDeleteoh how i hate the dreaded final sale!
Jackie, when your order arrives, check the packing slip. Final Sale items will say as much next to the item name. Some may be, some may not be. you never know.... IDK. I never order anything I don't actually want, and if I get stuck with something, I can always get back what I paid here or on eBay. I don't worry too much about FS. But I think I'm the only one!
ReplyDeleteYesterday I finally got my sunshine peony skirt for $44, a Sconset plaid shirt for $13.99 (this runs HUGE! I am normally a medium and I needed an XS! unprecedented for me...) and then the sleeveless orange and blue floral blouse that had the asymmetrical hem and the bow like the impressionist floral cami (can't recall the item name), and I think it ended up being $34.99.
In that top, I took a 6 (a size smaller than my usual 8) and in the Impressionist floral top I had to size down two sizes to a 4. Yet another unprecedented situation.
And I haven't lost THAT much weight. I know these things are running big! Hmm.
Last but not least, my online order the first night of the sale was all broken-in boyfriend chino shorts -- I needed to size down after ordering all 10s in the spring.
HThs someone!
Elaine: Did you by the sconset plaid shirt in stores? I went the other day and it was tagged as $39.99. Just curious.
ReplyDeleteMichelle - I bought the Sconset plaid shirt in store yesterday and it was marked 19.99 (I ended up paying 13.99, like Elaine). They also have the Breakers plaid shirt - that one was marked 39.99.
ReplyDeleteHTH!
Tacking on "final sale" gives me the perfect reason to ignore J Crew for awhile.

ReplyDeleteThanks for the help! My store has it and I will be its proud owner after I pick it up tonight :)
ReplyDeleteMy store also has a size small so if anyone is dying to have it I can pick it up and ship it to you for lower than the typical J. Crew shipping costs.
ReplyDeleteI placed an order last night not realizing the sale had turned FS and just got off the phone with CS. I got a manager on the phone (by luck) and she told me that the system has not yet updated the items with the red print but the sales are final. They will work with customers on a case by case basis.
ReplyDeleteAfter she removed the restriction from my order, I told her I found the small print and the change to be really sneaky and that a lot of their customers try to play by the rules as to not have to ask for a "one time courtesty." Well good news here, apparently they are not supposed to use that phrase any longer! Yah!
Funny enough I called CS on Sunday for a price adjustment and I did notice that the one time courtesy line had now been substituted for "its my pleasure to take care of this for you." And she adjusted several orders from the past couple of weeks without any question.
So my advice it to call and have them note your orders.
I'm so glad I checked JCA blog because I almost placed another order just now not knowing it's "final sale" from today on.
ReplyDeleteIt is very sneaky and bad business practice to sneak that little FS sign on the front page cause I just had my shopping cart ready and wouldn't have known about it.
I will be staying away from this Final Sale!
Yeah, I don't understand what they're thinking. If you're going to make the last day of the sale "final," at least allow customers to take maybe another 10% off. But changing just the fine print looks like they were trying to get away with something. Bait and switch. Bad.
ReplyDeleteI knew that Final Sale would be on the near horizon, since there seems to be an endless supply of tees in the sale section, however, to sneak it in at the end of a % off promo is just plain stinky. Anyway, now I don't feel nearly as bad posing the OT question- does anyone know when Talbots new arrivals will be in store/online?
ReplyDeleteWow. I agree wholeheartedly with all of the sentiments expressed here. As if I weren't entirely irked by final sale before (hello, inconsistent sizing!) this business of sneaking it into the fine print leaves a taste in my mouth akin to that of gefilte fish (sorry, grandma).
ReplyDeleteIt's probably for the best since I've placed several orders in the past few weeks, much of which is going back...
Though I mean to inflict no disappointment on my fellow shoppers, I hope J.Crew's call center is so swarmed with order cancellations today that people waiting to place new orders hang up and go elsewhere. They need to do away with this nonsense once and for all.
Woa, I almost place a 3rd order this afternoon. Thank you for posting!
ReplyDeleteJust called CS who said FS only applies to orders placed TODAY (wed.)
ReplyDeleteboo-hoo! I want more stuff:(
So, per Elaine's comment, JC's system again has failed, but they're still punishing the customer by holding them to this final sale BS?!
ReplyDeleteI pointedly don't buy from JC during final sale (and frankly, their quality does not make me pay full price either.) Guess I'll be waiting for the next non-final sale!
I stopped by the store and bought a watercolor floral cardigan for $18 and a thicket floral shirt for about $20. I'd bought the cardigan for $40 a week ago and plan to return it.
ReplyDeleteThe store's signs indicated Final Sale, and I was told by the cashier at check-out; she also stamped my receipt with a red FINAL SALE stamp. First time I've seen that.
I feel like FS in the stores is more palatable, as you do get to see/try on items. But not cool to sneak it in on the website.
Wow, that is baaad news! I think it's entirely too sneaky of them to post final sale in the fine print and not in a more pronounced fashion that were accustomed to. I guess they're training us to read the fine print!
ReplyDeleteNo way can they refuse a return if the invoice is not marked 'final sale item'.
Thanks a million for this post Alexis!!
If anyone's interested, the Zafrina skirt in blue is cute mainly due to the embroidery. Extra Small & Small are the same length & both fit w/o much difference in fullness. The skirt is packaged so it comes out wrinkled vertically, giving the skirt some texture. It may appear a little more flat after being washed.
I picked up the paper poplin perfect shirt in that great purple color today for $21. Hate that the B&M stuff is final sale, even though the website wasn't until today. BF would have gotten a Sutherland Trench for $50 if he had the option of returning-- picked up 3 polos for about $10 each instead, though.
ReplyDeleteMichelle, I did, in the Raleigh, NC store. I think it just went down to $19.99 within the last 2 days or so. I'd tried one on in Durham, NC a few days prior that may or may not have been down to $19.99 ... I know I would not have bought it at $39.99, but I might have tried it on. ;-)
ReplyDeleteHuh! A big ol' red final sale stamp on a receipt! Now that is news right there. Although I am thrilled to hear the one-time courtesy jazz is out of the picture now.
ReplyDeleteI dunno, I have had very, very few instances during FS in which something hasn't worked out for me. I'm lucky to have 2 stores within a 30-mile radius, so 99% of the time I can try on in-store and see colors, fit, etc. Normally I use FS as an opportunity to buy more of something I already own, like a pair of shorts or a tee I love, in more colors.
Every once in a while, I'll take a chance on something entirely new ... but I'm glad I didn't buy, say, the Impressionist floral cami online. I'd have been swimming in it and been mad too, since it's sold out now!
Good luck with your orders, ladies! If mine would move beyond a RELEASED status, I'd be happy. Now I'm worried that something will be out of stock and reduce my order total, and then I'll be stuck paying shipping, BOOOOO.
Thanks Alexis for letting us know. I had placed an order this morning (professor blazer in black popped back in my size), along with some Frances tops as ridealongs. There were no indications of final sale in my cart or email receipt.
ReplyDeleteAfter seeing this post, I immediately called CS and explained the situation and asked to cancel the order, or confirm it was not final sale. I braced myself for disappointment, but with no muss or fuss at all, Colleen said she put a note on my order that it was not to be final sale. She confirmed that the stores will see this note when they pull up my order.
I really hope that her note heads off any problems, but I'll go all the way up the chain if I need to.
Tarareilly, I have the Hockney tote... it is very large, and it gets heavy even when only 1/3 to 1/2 full. But the leather is very soft and seems durable. I love mine even though it is larger than I expected it to be.
ReplyDeleteThat is sooo sneaky! The final sale print is very small on the email, and then when you go to the site, it still doesn't say it big, and when I placed something in my cart, it didn't say final sale. Lame!
ReplyDeleteAlexis,
ReplyDeleteI can't thank you enough for posting this--I thought I was going crazy for not noticing "final sale" earlier. I think it is TERRIBLE business practice to alter the terms/conditions of a promo WHILE it is on!! Even the CS guy I spoke with agreed that this was the first time that a promo that started off as "sale" on Monday turned into "final sale" on Wednesday morning. Why couldn't they say on the Monday email that the sale terms were going to change on the last day of the promo?? I called to cancel the order that I placed this morning, but of course, it has "released," so I couldn't. The CS rep went ahead and put a note on the fs items (after much ho-humming about how I should read the fine print each day of a promo--gah). I am annoyed at this and cannot understand which manager thought this would be a wonderful marketing move. Eesh. Obviously he/she wasn't thinking.
Ok. I am done ranting. Am still smarting at the sneakiness of it all, but am done ranting. Thanks for listening, ladies. Kit
Well, this is terrible. I had 8 items in my shopping cart I was mulling over but now I will DEFINITELY not be buying them. It's particularly annoying for me because I buy a lot of petite sizes which my J.Crew doesn't carry at all... urgh. Too much of a risk. Their petite sizes are so hit or miss and seem to have no standards whatsoever... I don't think I'll buy anything final sale unless I already own the item in another color or something.
ReplyDeleteI agree the whole final sale thing is a terrible business practice. I've never seen it anywhere else... certainly not in stores of comparable reputation and quality to J.Crew.
PLEASE END FINAL SALE, JCrew! And definitely don't just arbitrarily apply it in a sneaky way to an ongoing promotion!
Does anyone know when the fall catalog comes out? Is it July or August?
ReplyDeleteI almost placed another order this morning but saw the FS notice and just closed my browser. Not gonna do it.
ReplyDeleteI have returned FS items in the past without problem but I have a feeling J.Crew is cracking down on the returns due to a lag in sales and an increase in returns thanks to quality and sizing issues. It's really awful that they tried to sneak it by the customer though. I will definitely be more cautious when placing sale orders in the future. Yuck.

ReplyDeleteI have been reading this post and shaking my head in agreement with your comments. It is pretty sneaky to include "All Sales Final" in the tiniest print on the Sale page.
ReplyDeleteI honestly thought "Final Sale" would return tomorrow, *after* this promotion would end. I couldn't believe that J.Crew would change the terms of the EXTRA30 promotion on the last day.
Like many of you have mentioned, it left a bad taste in my mouth. J.Crew is known for treating customers well and this tactic of theirs doesn't fall in line with that notion.
I ended up going to J.Crew today to return a few items. Because I was disappointed with today's actions, I purposely left the store empty handed. Not that J.Crew is hurting too much by my lack of purchase today! ;) Instead, I went to the Gap and got a couple of items (and the 40% off sale helped!) :)
Very sneaky (and not cool) J Crew!! Though I did just place an order about half an hour ago and none of the items were listed as Final Sale in my confirmation email.
ReplyDeleteLynzeeroo, none of the items on my receipt were marked FS, which is why I was shocked when I belatedly opened my email this evening. Acc. to the CSrep, there were three items on my order that ended in 99cents that would have been final sale. The other items were returnable, he said. Now, since none of the items were listed as FS, I could have just let it be, but I did not want to take the risk, given the sneakiness of this promo. So, I got him to put the notation on the 3 items that he said were FS.
ReplyDeleteI have always been able to return items ending in 99cents if they were not clearly marked "Final Sale," but just did not want to take the chance this time. You might be totally able to return your items, but like I said, the sneakiness of this "FS" business made me wary and cautious this time. Have a good night, everyone. Kit
Lynzeeroo, none of the items on my receipt were marked final sale, so you can imagine my shock when I belatedly opened the new promo email. The CSrep said that four items in my order that ended in 99 cents would have been final sale, the others were returnable. While I have never had any trouble returning items (even those ending in 99cents) that were not marked final sale, I did not want to take any chances this time. So, I had him put the notation on those 4 items, just in case I need to return them
ReplyDeletesorry about the multiple responses...thought the first one was lost acc. to blogger...
ReplyDeleteOT, but check out Katie Holmes in the JCrew sequin sweatshirt, http://www.people.com/people/gallery/0,,20396080,00.html#20802847.
ReplyDeleteWell, I used the EXTRA30 code for the free shipping component when I placed an order for full price items this evening. It's always nice to have a code and I'm dying to try out the Island Paisley perfect shirt.
ReplyDeleteLove the new banner Alexis. Very pretty,.
Katie Holmes is used to modeling j.crew...does anyone remember the jc catalog modeled completely by the cast of Dawson's Creek back in the 90's? It's pretty much how I fell in love with the brand as I was a devoted DC fan.
ReplyDeleteRae, I stopped by my local store tonight (incidentally to make a return and not a purchase, much like Alexis...) and told the SA that I was summered OUT. She mentioned their really big fall rollout is slated for the end of July, but that she wouldn't be surprised if they bump it up a week or two when the time comes. Even though it's almost 100 here, I'm itching for fall.
ReplyDeleteAppgal: My husband still likes watching DC since we have them all on DVD LOL! I too loved watching it back then.
ReplyDeleteI so wish I still had that catalog with all of them modeling JC...
I feel kinda old..ha! :-P
Anyone else noticed the "summer sale" main page does NOT have any final sale asterisk on it right now? Did they remove it from what everyone saw earlier? This page has no information on an EXTRA30 code now.
ReplyDeleteI just went to my J.Crew tonight. They are offering 20% off all sale items... final sale, no returns.
ReplyDelete
