J.Crew Email: Jenna's Picks (summer edition)

"Thanks!" to many of you, including Marietta, who let us know about J.Crew's most recent email, which showcases all of Jenna Lyons' picks for the latest catalog. (That image is super long. To see it larger, click here.) ;)

Do you agree or disagree with any of the items selected? What are your thoughts on the color palette? Which items (or colors) did you hope to see?

46 comments:

  1. It's a basic summer palette: blues, whites, and tan accessories. Not bad, just not exciting or eye-catching.

  2. I notice a couple of the items from the website version of Jenna's picks are missing. The metallic ballet flats, linen sweater jacket, cotton popover top and the denim safari jacket. Wonder why they cut some for the email.

I'd like the madras bikini more if it had silver instead of gold threads, or no metallic at all would be best for my style. The dress looks cute, anyone have it and can offer an opinion?

  3. I think I saw on a someone's blog that they liked the dress but it was too short (and the person was not tall!) I liked it too until that comment as I am tall.

Basic color palette for summer but nothing too exciting or is a must have.

I like the denim safari jacket that seems to be missing but it was not a must have or anything I would pay full price for! I have a closet full of cute denim jackets as is:)

  4. I wonder if some items were left off because of stock situations (i.e., not enough to potentially satisfy orders generated by the ad), especially the safari jacket.

I love this colour palette for summer...washed blues & whites. But nothing was a surprise or terribly exciting.

  5. I was disappointed by Jenna's picks this time around. I usually want several of them, but this time around, with the exception of the necklace which I saw at the collection store and was stunning in person, none of these items are doing it for me. I saw the dress yesterday at 45th and Madison and the whole bunch of them looked like they were in desperate need of steaming, which said to me that this is the kind of dress you wear for an hour and is covered in wrinkles. Oh well, maybe next season...

OT can we get a decent coupon code already?? I've been trying to buy the full price Lyla printed peep toes for some time now, just can't rationalize the $250 price tag (and shipping to boot!)

  6. I was loving the white dress until i saw Genny's comment... :( J.Crew has really been cutting back their tall line. I'm glad i snaped up the Tall Sophia dress when i did, i haven't seen it back on the website for months now..

  7. eh, I never find "Jenna's Picks" to be all that exciting. The madras bathing suit is cute, though.

  8. I am also never overly excited by her picks. Sometimes I wonder if she chooses items that need her help - except for the denim jacket this time around. I do like the monterey skirt, but since I already have one, I would wait for a sale before getting another one. Not because I don't love it, but do I really NEED two of the same item (other than the boyfriend tees, of course! :D). I do like the blues, though, although I'd like some saturated colors.

  9. Agree it's not too exciting. I don't see any item I'd LOVE to have. I have the monterey skirt though. I had the Ikat Monterey in Pink and love it! It may not be worth it to pay full price for this blue/white version, but I can't bring myself to bring it back to the store for a return yet...Still pondering...

  10. Dara - the TA-940 free shipping code on orders of $150+ is valid until July 4.

  11. I have the Garden dress, and it's not the longest dress, but you should remember that J.Crew positions it more as a beach cover-up/lounge dress than say a sundress, so the length wouldn't be so much of an issue if you wear it like that. I'm pretty short, so it worked for me!

  12. I like the palette, especially the orange nail polish!!! I have to get some!

I do not care for the plaid bathing suit however. It just seems a little too early 90's for me...

  13. The linen safari jacket was one of the earlier items that was included in Jenna's picks, on the backboards of the B&Ms and in the July catalog (page 22). They've actually sold out online, and very few B&Ms are stocking them. It's a modern take on a very classic jacket.

  14. Ok, check that, I've just checked online, and they seemed to have restocked on the jacket in all sizes! Yay! Happy shopping to those interested! :) (And just to add, it is a very comfortable, soft piece to add to your closet.)

  15. I love the necklace and the really love the sandals. That dress does seem short - almost a top more than a dress. Cute though.

Did y'all see that sale update today?? Like, 800 items! Some stuff I hadn't seen in ages.

  16. I like the color palette, but none of Jenna's picks looks enticing to me this time. I would have loved the Garden Dress in a different color.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Love the blue and white checkered bikini! But bright colors are missing in the other items....

    ReplyDelete
  18. I bought the sandals because I loved the color and the heel height - it works with pants or a skirt/dress. One note of caution though, I got a few blisters on my toes and the side of my heels from the straps the first time I wore them. I am a pretty standard size 6 shoe so it might just be that they need some breaking in.

  19. The earrings would be great with a tan cashmere turtleneck that I have.

OT here: does anyone know if the white rosette tee runs true to size, or does it run large? Also, is it really sheer (don't like see-through...)?

  20. Captain Crew - I didn't like the petal things on the dress. They were too big and looked messy.

I do like the libretto necklace. Overall I don't pay much attention to Jenna's picks either. I agree they might be used to help items they have a lot of stock in or that need help selling in general.

  21. I really like the bikni. Very cute:)

The safari jacket is just OK. I tried it on and liked it but did not LOVE it. The blue color is nice but will be very limiting to wear for my wardrobe and will scream summer '09. I wish it were more of a "true denim blue."

Glad to hear the dress is a pass with all them in stores being wrinkled and in need of steaming. No thanks on that one after all!

  22. The only piece I like is the necklace. I find the other items similar to old J Crew pieces I have which I used to love, but recently I started to find them too nautical. I guess my taste is changing

  23. The denim jacket is backordered until November online so I wonder if it will actually be available in the end.

I have one and really like it. I bought it because I have a similar white cotton safari jacket from a few years back that I've worn a lot. I thought I wouldn't get much wear out of a white jacket but the cut is so effortlessly stylish. It's no wonder the safari jacket style comes around regularly in one form or another. A perfect design to highlight the female form.

The style is really versatile and works with with most any top or bottom, skirts, jeans, shorts, dress pants, even over a casual dress, and it always looks good. A basic flattering jacket never goes out of style and I would put this item up there as one of my top 3 purchases from J.Crew in 2009.

  24. I love the bikini, I have a clutch in the same plaid - minus the metallic thread and it is really feminine and cute. I get compliments every time I use it. The navy/white plaid pattern is nice for summer, although I love plaid year round. The little ruffles add a sweet touch.

The earrings look good but I can't bring myself to wear the heavy ones. I don't want those huge floppy lobes when I'm 40. ;-)

  26. Has anyone seen a pair of the summer weight stretch bermudas in store in the gray color in a size 2? My pair got destroyed and I loved the color. Email me and let me know please!

  27. I have the dress, and it's fine- but I find I need to wear a big wide belt around it to give myself a waist. Without a belt, it's huge!

  28. Not exactly one of Jenna's picks; but I did pull the pin today and order the watch and a navy striped strap. Expensive, yeah, but I've been looking at this for almost a year debating over it again and again.

I received a gift card for $100 and so that was the final push to get it. Several have posted that it's something they bought and like. More and more I've become a walking J.Crew advertisement. (Just a comment on how much I buy from them and wear.)

  29. Does anyone know if J. Crew will run some type of sale for 4th of July? It seems like every other store is. Thanks!

  30. jcrewguyincanada - Have you seen this guy's blog? He is on the front page of JCA, but I found him the other day thru Joyce's blog: Makingthebestjoyce

  31. omg the plaid bikini! I had almost the same one in the 90's ...love it!

  32. Hey gigiofca; actually I've read his blog a few times. I quite like his take on things.

    Thanks for the heads up.

  33. Sorry about being off-topic, but does anyone own the Sateen Saturday skirt? Like or dislike? Thank you.

  34. I don't have Jenna's specific pick of the blossom libretto. I ended up with the clear crystal libretto and the green crystal garden version. Love them both and didn't expect to as much for the latter but the taupey ribbon with the green is so lovely and a little more casual chic. Wore it yesterday with a navy dress and a short sleeved long ivory cardi and got tons of compliments. I'm with Gigi, in general, I tend to not gravitate to the "picks" much at all and end up liking other pieces much more than the featured ones.

  35. Agree with some of the posters, the picks are OK but nothing stellar.

Other than the denim safari jacket of course! Mine was delivered yesterday after a successful "find it" search last week. I wore it out to a beach patio party last night with shorts, strappy sandals and a bright tank underneath. So many people asked me where I got "that awesome jacket". A gal I barely know asked if she could borrow it (AS IF). Unbelievably soft and comfortable and fits like a glove. Surely not the style for everyone but a winner in my book.

  36. the garden dress looks exactly like a crewcuts dress that my daughter wears and i never want to wear any sort of "mom/daughter" matchy matchy. i think the sweet papaya garden dress is almost an exact match to my daughter's dress.

  37. JCrew guy in Canada:

I bought the same watch a few months ago, I regret missing a genuine Timex vintage on ebay though (it sold for about $200; it looked exactly like the jcrew version of it without the fluorescent parts and with a date dial

Have you read this blog? This guy isn't so nice when it comes to this watch :)

  38. Since everybody's been raving about the denim safari jacket, I thought I might ask about the fitting. Does it fit TTS? or do I need to size up like most of the JC jackets? TIA!

  39. I'm sorry to be OT, but I just received my ink-dot print dress in the mail. I love it! My only question is, what kind of shoes to wear? Some people are wearing the dress with a brown belt, so maybe brown high heel shoes? I tend to wear black ballet-flat type shoes, which I don't think go with the dress well. The model on the jcrew website seems to be wearing brown strappy shoes. I would love suggestions! Thanks

  40. SanFranciscoCA, the blog you gave a link to definitely has a point of view and an opinion. While a true vintage watch is great, I'm okay with one which draws inspiration from the past while still being new.

I don't plan to fool anyone into thinking the watch is old. I just like that it is a classic looking piece and something you won't see everywhere.

J.crew like so many other retailers mines the past for ideas. What's so bad about that? Don't all major fashion houses, designers and companies do that?

Alexis, maybe this watch is worthy of a post of it's own?

  41. Has anyone tried the "endless summer cardigan"? I just received it in the mail, and I'm wondering how other people find the sizing. I ordered my regular size (small), but I find it more fitted than other cardigans, particularly in the arms. Part of me wants to size up, but I'm wondering if I should stick with the small since it does have cleaner lines than, for example, the soft tee cardigan. The fit I'm experiencing does look quite similar to the way it looks on the model online. In the catalog, it looks a bit looser. Has anyone else tried this piece?

  42. I really like the garden dress, the petals and the length. I think it's perfect as a beach coverup or loungewear. I do wish it had come in more colors and less neutrals. I purchased the shell color but like the papaya color as well.

  43. Julia - I am a huge fan of 'nude,' shoes. Shoes that are very close to your leg color. It will keep focus on the dress and you don't have to worry about 'matching the belt. If you need to have a color shoe on the bottom, I would try blk shoes first, even w/the brown belt. $0.02 :-)

  44. Issy, I've found that the jacket fits true to size. HTH! :)

  45. For those looking for the Contrast Stitch Perfect Shirt, they had quite a few at the Glen Mills PA store 610 358 2001 and they also had one Safari Denim Jacket in size small.

    HTH,
    Kate

  46. Land's End had a jacket almost EXACTLY like the safari jacket a couple of summers ago. I bought it in denim, olive green and a pretty reddish brown. I like mine a lot! The denim is more to my liking than the strange blue of the JCrew one.... I know others like it but if missed out keep your eyes peeled at other retailers...
