J.Crew Email: Dress up your boyfriend

"Thanks!" to many of you, including Julie & Marietta, who let us know about J.Crew's latest email.

J.Crew's latest ad features their Broken-in Boyfriend Chino (Item 12953; $69.50). Although the ad is about the pants, I can't stop looking at the top- which is the Chiffon Trellis Tank (Item 15135; $175.00). Ugh! I just don't get it. The website describes it as "a stunning tank for day or night" and "stunning" is right (like a deer caught in headlights stunning). How fast will this tank make it to the sale section? ;)

What are your thoughts on the Broken-in Boyfriend Chino? Have you tried them on? If so, please share with us your review. Also, do you love or dislike the Chiffon Trellis Tank? How would you style this very distinctive top?

Quick Poll: Do you like the Chiffon Trellis Tank?

  1. I love the Boyfriend Chinos. They are so soft and comfy! I've worn them both with rolled hem and regular.
You have to size down! On my body type (small on the bottom) they are still quite roomy even one size down.

  2. Not too fond of the bf chino, but I really like the tank. It's kinda unique and the ruffles gives us girls who are less endowed on the top the illusion of something more.

  3. I'll pass on both of these pieces. I have some of my husband's old jeans and chinos that I wear around the house instead of sweats or yoga pants, but would never take that look outside. I need a belt to cinch them up and even then they hang and feel sloppy. Comfy enough for loungewear at home though.

I agree with you on the tank Alexis - sale section, here it comes! If this item were available at the beginning of the ruffle/chiffon trend it *may* have been snapped up but I think we're all getting tired of that overdone, over-the-top look by now...

  4. I tried on the bf chinos not too long ago and they just didn't work on me. They ARE soft though, and I really wanted them to work!

The tank is ugh by itself. I could see it being cute if it were peeking out from underneath a cardi. But by itself? Definitely like Gigi says...looks like chest hair :)

  5. The tank is ridiculous, it looks like CHEST HAIR.... not a good looks for a lady.

  6. xoxo,
I agree...I have some of my hubby's chinos and jeans that he can no longer wear that I can and I like the look of them for around the house, etc. Not a look I would sport outside the house or a quick trip to the grocery store.

  7. The broken in boyfriend chinos were great. You do have to size down, but their soft fabric makes them hang quite nicely.

    But $70??? C'mon.

That's the only reason I didn't buy them. Plus, I have enough chinos. I really should break in my own.

  8. xoxo I am with you on the chinos. I have some from my little brother that I wear occasionally around the house but never out in public. Usually it's what I throw on over my bikini when the sun goes down and I'm too lazy to go in the house and change for real. Could not possibly wear my husband's cast-offs as he is way bigger than me. It would look like I was wearing a clown suit. I guess these chinos are for those gals who like the look but don't have a source already.

  9. What I like about the BF chinos is that they have the relaxed look, but they aren't sloppy like wearing men's pants. They fit proportionately for a woman. I dress mine up and down, wear them rolled or straight...I think they're fantastic.

LOL about the "chest hair" look of the tank, Tastymoog!!!

  10. Just a thought...if you have to size down to make them fit why not buy the regular chinos??? I believe these were made to be slouchy and big and sizing down seems to defeat the purpose:)

  11. Genny, you have a good point but the sizing at J.Crew can be pretty inconsistent so who knows what kind of fit they are going for with these pants? Usually the positive comments on these are about the softness of the fabric, not the fit.

As for the fit compared to wearing mens pants it is really not possible to say that these would fit all women better than a pair of mens pants. Women come in so many different shapes and sizes of body part combinations and mens pants can be cut in a myriad of styles. I think these look pretty baggy on the model and others who have posted photos wearing them. I imagine after an hour or two it would look like you're wearing your grandpa's pants. Throw on the grandpa cardi, grab your pipe and hit that rocking chair on the porch!

  12. I love the boyfriend chino as well, although I haven't bought a pair yet. I'm still waiting for a promo. And, you do have to size down at least one size.

  13. If I wore my regular size, they wouldn't stay up at my waist - I'd look like a lot of the teenage boys around here, holding up my pants. :D Not a look I like! But, by sizing down, they fit around the waist and the legs are a relaxed fit. JMO

  14. hahaha ShuLvr! Agreed, these are pretty baggy and saggy, which is intended, I think. Ur right tho, so many different shapes is why JC has different fits and they are always offering "his" shirts and BF pants, at least as far back as I can remember. Just the fact that these menswear styles are popular enough to offer some every season means that lots of ladies look good in man styled stuff. Nice to have options. Neither of these are on my wish list.

  15. When was it that the new arrivals were supposed to come out? Someone mentioned a date in early June but I've forgotten. Can someone remind me? Thx.

  16. The Gap's "straight khaki trouser" is similar to these, at about half the price, and they are also very soft.

  17. The new arrivals are suppose to be in the Charleston, SC, store on June 9.

  19. Thank you math teacher!

I hope they are also online and another free shipping code is shared. The ones on the JCA home page expire June 6. :(

  20. The rust color is popping up everywhere in fall previews. Lots of rust, burgundy, brown and blue. Can't say I like those colors all together, or the palette. I preferred the camel, purple, gray of last fall/winter season much better.

  21. I don't like the pants or the tank. Baggy pants = not something I ever wear in public. I guess I much prefer the tailored look. The tank is one of those things that people will only buy because it has the JCrew label sewn into it... a direct result of drinking too much crewlade, is what I mean. :)

  22. I haven't tried on the bf chino, but i love the bf trend... I may try them on soon!

  23. I tried on the bf chinos and they were too baggy on me- I bought a pair of classic khaki pants at Gap instead and love them!

As for the top, Chloe discussed this on her blog, it made me laugh out loud :)

  24. My backside needs something with a little more shape to it, or I end up blobby. I am really enjoying trouser jeans right now. The tank is a nice color for me, but I prefer tops that are BSF (bra strap friendly) and this one looks to be more of the spaghetti variety. Frankly, this summer's offerings don't seem to be very different than the past few, except the trims aren't finished as much this year, and that isn't exactly an improvement.

I saw a pic of Cameron Daiz wearing a top that was labelled "pre-fall" whichever designer. That made me wistful... Oh, fall and winter. How I love thee. No bra concerns, no leg shaving, and sweaters grow their sleeves back. Too bad it isn't even summer yet in MI.

  25. OT - Can anyone give some feedback on the Matchstick Bermudas # 16578 ? Do they fit the same as their other city fit pants this season? How is the color IRL and does it transfer badly (sounds like it might given the description online).

    TIA

  26. I preordered the tank when I had my 25% off card, and it arrived today. I really wanted to love it. It looks so much different than in the collection slide show on the website. I don't have a steamer, maybe I could have fluffed up the chiffon. It's raw edge once again and I really worry about raveling like I had with my Lili cardigan. Still, that wasn't the biggest issue I had with it. It's very boxy, not a feminine shape at all. I look like a rectangle in it. Plus, it fits big. I ordered an XS and if I lean over even slightly, it reveals everything. On the plus side, the knit is wonderful and soft, and it is fully lined. I got the warm shell color, that is a very nice shade I think would be flattering to many skin tones. I just can't make it work, especially for the price. It's going back.

  27. I love the boyfriend chinos - they have turned out to be one of my favorites this spring! Not so sure about the tank:(

  28. Love the chinos!! Not a fan of the tank at all. It looks better in rust than in does in the hair-colour though, I must admit!

I am really digging that rusty colour - so unexpected for summer.
