"Looking to VENT" with J.Crew

This is the weekly "Looking to VENT with J.Crew" post, a place to share our not-so-stellar experiences with J.Crew.

If you have recently experienced a frustrating situation with J.Crew, maybe you might be willing to share that information with us in this post.

Please feel free to share your story on almost any topic— including poor experiences with purchases & orders, promotions/ offers, in-store visits, transactions with store associates, etc.

  1. Here's another sneaky way J. Crew is cutting corners. When I was buttoning up my new navy Ratti paisley shirt I noticed the buttons felt far apart. That was such a weird thing to notice that I thought I must be imagining it, but when I pulled out two older Ratti shirts, I saw that they had eight buttons down the front and the new shirt has only seven. The buttons are farther apart on the lower half of the new shirt, which means there's uncomfortable gaping through the torso. The buttons in the chest area haven't changed. And don't get me started on the disappearance of shell buttons and their replacement with cheap clunky plastic ones over the last few years. I now cut the shell buttons off my worn out shirts because it's almost impossible to buy the small shirt size shell buttons online anywhere.

    2. Mary G: Other than the button issue, how is the fit in that shirt? I was considering the midnight paisley shirt and pants but they went final sale so fast.

    3. Good catch, Mary! The number of buttons makes a big difference in the fit of the shirt and how flat it lays on the body, especially if you have a bust or tummy. I have also noticed that over time, the stitching on my J Crew shirts has larger, fewer, less fine stitches per inch. Fewer stitches per inch results in weaker seams and puckering after laundering. Fewer buttons, cheaper buttons, fewer stitches, less cost/time, cheaper construction. And that does not take into account the quality of the fabric.

    4. Thank you Ruffles for your watchful eye. Right on the mark.

    5. @shopping celle I took my usual size 2. It looked boxy but fit fine through the shoulders and torso, though it doesn't have the nice shaping that old perfect shirts had I expected more nuances in the color but it's just navy against white. I bought it for the day when I can (hopefully) travel again. Navy is my main neutral and I know the shirt will go with a lot I have, but it was a practical buy rather than a complete love.

  2. @MaryG, thank you so much as always for your excellent eye for details. I thought I was imagining the same until your post. The Ratti Line overall in my opinion simply is nowhere as nice as it was in years past. Same with the beautiful buttons that were originally on the old crew cashmere cardigans. Remember they gave you an extra button?

    1. @Lynn, yes extra buttons and pretty buttons. I swear if I could, I'd go back to the 19th century model of buying fabric and taking it to a seamstress. You can find beautiful fabric online these days but the patterns available aren't that classic or detailed and my own patience with tailoring etc. is pretty nil.

    2. @Mary, I am going to look around over here and speak with some of my textile manufacturer friends in Italy and ask them for you. I am still very much into classics especially navy and have a pretty good idea of your discerning taste. When I have time I will post back here for you. If there is anything else you would like to add please let me know. Re: the old buttons, they never fell off and I have a collection of the "extras" in a small box. The good old days.

    3. Thanks Lynn. I'd love to know what you find out. Not sure others want this information, so feel free to email me here: marygiunca@gmail.com. And tell your friends, my name is supposedly Italian, though my grandparents came over from Transylvania.

    4. @MaryG, I will be happy to communicate with you via email. Mine is monaco377@mac.com. You have such an interesting background. Ancestors fromTransylvania most likely (Gypsies) Italian and would be willing to bet even Hungarian somewhere. Have an old friend in Ct whose family was from Transylvania, they were of Jewish, Italian and Hungarian origins which make sense. Oh the stories I remember them telling me. Will send you info on the fabrics as soon as I can though it may take me a little time.

  3. Such a disappointing roll out! If you can call it that as I saw only a couple of new items.
Sézane got my money today, placed an order for two linen tops and some faux suede ribbed sweatpants. The sweatpants look fabulous, casual and chic at the same time.

    1. Nice sale taking place as well. I posted earlier they've come out with some beautiful looking items. Enjoy them!

    2. I just received my Sézane safari dress in pale olive. It’s lovely. Sézane shirts typically always have covered, horn or shell buttons.

    3. I just looked at Sezane and don’t understand why they aren’t more specific regarding pant measurements. They don’t give detailed measurements for rise, unless I am missing something.

    4. @Lynn they had some nice items in the Archives sale. Noticed that a few other retailers also had an Archives sale. Is this the new End of Season sale ;-)
@kikigirl so glad that some retailers still deliver quality. Your safari dress sounds lovely!!

  4. Has anyone here seen the pale citron cashmere crewneck in person? It looks like a soft pale yellow on the model shots but one of the reviewers' photo suggests it is a garish neon. Anyone wants to chime in? Many thanks!

  5. @Unknown, yes and it's not garish by any means. It's more in line with the neon colors. More greenish undertones. I love and have purchased a few yellow cashmere Jcrew sweaters and my favorites are more on the pale side and brighter but again, with none of the greenish undertones Daffodil, and heather lemon for example. The only reason I didn't keep the citron was because I didn't think it flattered my skin tone. If it had I would have kept it. I love yellows but they have to be in a certain color range for them to work for me personally. Hope this helps.

  6. I love yellows too! I have vintage citrus from summer 2019 which is my lighter yellow, more pastel. Also have heather lemon from spring 2021 and it’s much deeper orangey yellow! I did see the one you describing and thought it was nicer softer tone color then the one I bought this spring! But I don’t remember such good details as Lynn
I did buy the yellow stripe shirt dress and and yellow stripe puff sleeve top this summer! Love my yellows

  7. There were a couple of shades of yellow, one was Dazzling Sun which was out in 2019-2020, this had green undertones and was not in the pale yellow category. Vintage citrus was also out in 2019 a slightly brighter pale yellow, Daffodil and Heather Lemon which have no orange undertones. With the company changing names with their yellows one has to be diligent as some of them aren’t flattering to certain skin tones.

    1. Agree! Name and color change! I like Warmer yellow. Green undertones make more neon I feel! Yellow should be a happy color!

  8. @Lynn @Kate, Thank you so much for your input! I prefer softer yellows with no green undertones. I wish J.Crew would release some new sweaters in vintage citrus. That'd be perfect!

  9. Over the years, citron @ J.Crew = neon. The photos are deceiving. If you want pale yellow or lemon yellow, you want chiffon, vintage citrus, heather lemon
