This is the weekly "Looking to VENT with J.Crew" post, a place to share our not-so-stellar experiences with J.Crew.
If
you have recently experienced a
frustrating situation with J.Crew, maybe
you might be willing to share that
information with us in this post.
Please
feel free to share your story on almost
any topic— including poor experiences with
purchases & orders, promotions/ offers,
in-store visits, transactions with store
associates, etc.
Sort of a vent, sort of a question … I am wondering why J. Crew continues, rollout after rollout and with every leadership change, to promise “a return to the old J Crew” and “our authentic styles” and “quality” but never deliver? I mean never. What is the strategy there to make promises and then insult your customers by churning out the same disappointing stuff? I think it’s getting riskier to rely solely on nostalgia for the brand.
ReplyDeleteI agree. I thought the new CEO said “Return to prep”. Where the prep in an safari adventure?
DeleteI finally admitted to myself that JCrew is over. The quality/aesthetic of yore ain't ever coming back.
DeleteMe too, 3ppm. I have to face reality. Lo, these many years of decline, I have hoped for a return to quality/style of yore. Done hoping for even an improvement in quality of the current low standard (some stuff I get is ok, and some of it is seriously Target-level quality). I think there are hardly any factories anymore overseas that can produce what JC was selling 15 years ago. Just hoping some company, SOMEWHERE, will spark a quality renaissance when enough consumers get fed up with disposable clothing, or clothing that looks terrible after one wash, etc.
DeleteI think one way they returned to the past was by releasing all of that stuff with ruffles. Years ago there were so many complaints on this website about the avalanche of ruffles so what did they do fairly recently? They released a ton of stuff with ruffles! I don't understand why they don't offer some mid rise or low rise pants. Where are the full length pants? I guess we'll see what they do for fall, but it would be nice to see a bit of a change.
DeleteJulie, I hear you. The only way to get what JC-of-yore offered (it was a one stop shop for me - office wear, casual wear, formals, all under one roof so to speak) is to shop several brands. I can't pay high-end prices so I get what I can on markdowns. So much more effort though.
Delete@kikigrl and others, I have a RL pullover with a safari bear on it . Quite 🥰 I would happily put him on loan to the CEO to give her an idea what the prep look is all about. Sadly, I no longer wish to shop Jcrew.
DeleteAgree with you all! Sadly, we are all still here and hopeful. It’s disingenuous of the brand to continue to make promises of a return to its former level but continue to offer trendy fast fashion at 60% off. Just be authentic, J Crew! I know the quality of what I am buying from you these days. Own it if this is where you’re staying.
DeleteThe new releases look very L.L. Bean. While I love Bean, I don’t look to J.Crew for that type of merchandise.
DeleteI thought Chris Benz was going in a good direction with the prints and dresses… and then he quit/was asked to leave after barely a year of design. I don’t like the new rollout at all - i don’t see anything classic, high end or imaginative at all. I will be shopping my closet for the next few months.
DeleteI agree... J.crew is firmly in the fast fashion realm now and some of the stuff is seriously a notch above junk, if that. I recently got the slouchy chinos and compared to some of my chinos of the past, these felt so lightweight, rough and cheap. There are a few gems every now and then which is what keeps me coming back. But I have increasingly looked to other brands such as Vince, Ganni, Kate spade, some newcomers like Marine Layer, Vuori... for higher quality. Rip ye olde J.crew of yore. ☹️
DeleteVery sad that I agree with all that has been said. I did purchase many things during the time that Chris Benz was in charge and am very happy to have them! I really thought that J.Crew was history when the West Elm guy was CEO. I recall that he had said something about "a return to pretty," and it was definitely not! Something called Never Even (?) turned up in addition to Universal Standard, which were not attractive, in my opinion.
DeleteThere are too many bad fabrics, poor quality manufacturing, and sad looking designs that are shapeless in drab colors. I am not one for elastic waists and do not have any. The former slim perfect shirt with the darts worked for me, but this new "slim" shirt is saggy on me. What happened to the long sleeved slim perfect tees in great colors? Mine have held up well.
So, I did say that my goal is to buy less but better, and even though I haven't purchased yet, I am thinking of looking ahead to brands like Max Mara. The truth is that I have so much more than I need for my "real" lifestyle. There's plenty for the imagined one as well.
Oh, J.Crew. Is it time to break up? The relationship isn't what it used to be, and it doesn't seem to be going in a good direction.
Honestly I haven't even been on this site since last year since I don't purchase from JC any longer. We broke up years ago. 2010 was a key time for my personal style. They are the same as Old Navy now with a higher price tag. The JC I purchase is Collections off of EBAY. It's so sad that the company has declined so much. I miss the Jenna days so much. Back then they didn't have promos because they didn't have to. We paid full price because it was so good. If you didn't buy something it wasn't there two weeks later. Searching for a new brand to fall in love with but so far I am single! Is there an app to help with a new retail love?
Delete@barbara I've had luck with the dept store brands, not Nordstrom since I think they've cheapened a lot over the years but Neiman, Saks, etc. I love all the old collection stuff too and nothing quite captures the JC aesthetic at its peak but in my experience, there is higher quality to be had at brands like Vince, Kate spade, Tory Burch, Anine Bing, mother, Veronica Beard, Ulla Johnson and Isabel Marant. I have been shopping more multi-brand sites like shopbop, my Theresa and sometimes the dept stores. There is a lot out there if you look, I'm sure you can find some brands that resonate with you. Good luck! ☺️
DeleteWearing the Vintage slim straight stretch chino pant
ReplyDeleteItem AB648 on vintage dove (green). Comfy. Took my 26, prob could of done 25. Paired it with an older liberty shirt with pink flowers and green stems! J5565 summer 2019
I do think my older stuff rocks!!
I was curious about those pants. Didn’t know what size to order. Would you say they run large?
DeleteYes would try a 25… now that I been pulling up 26 all morning! Not big! But they have stretch to them! So they do loosen. Little in high waist but not cutting off my circulation!
DeleteOK, I think we wear about the same size. I will NOT size up. Thanks for the helpful feedback!
DeleteNo need to size up!
DeleteMaybe even size down
I have those same pants. I like them, but I wish I had purchased the next smaller size. They’re fine when I first put them on, but after a few hours they’re slipping down. Oversized pants look really cute on some people, but on me they just look dumpy and dowdy, with a saggy butt.
DeleteI’ve been eyeing them too but couldn’t figure out what size if i’m between two. sounds like maybe i should go for the petite version of my usual size?
DeleteI agree! They are huge at end of the day! Wish I size down or at least tried them on when they arrived vs just wearing them today! Uhhh …
DeleteNever use the word “cheap”. Today everybody can look chic in inexpensive clothes (the rich buy them too). There is good clothing design on every level today. You can be the chicest thing in the world in a T-shirt and jeans — it’s up to you.”

My vent. Vintage cotton tshirts. So many people say they get holes. I have older ones that took years to get holes. I literally washed one once and already saw holes.
ReplyDeleteSadly my MADEWELL whisper cotton and JCrew vintage cotton tshirts are not the quality they used to be.
Sure they were inexpensive, and I mostly wear them around the house so I’ll keep doing so…but I won’t buy them again.
