J.Crew Reviews {straight from the JCAs!}

This is the weekly "J.Crew Reviews {straight from the JCAs}" post, to help each other share our reviews.

So if you have recently purchased, or stopped by a J.Crew store to try on an item (or two) from J.Crew, maybe you might be willing to share that information with us in this post.

Also, this request is not just limited to clothes. Please feel free to discuss bags, shoes, jewelry, accessories, etc.

In particular, if you could mention a few of the noteworthy details like fit, size, fabric, and the like— that would be fantastic! Thanks in advance! :)

  1. Just received this top:
    Smocked puff-sleeve linen top
Item AY671 in white. Sized down to XS and suggested. It just fits but looks cute. I only styled with the white linen ruffle wrap skirt from a few years ago and my husband came in surprised to see me in a “dress.” Will also try with denim.

  2. Underwhelmed by new arrivals! Bland colors and too much pants with pull on waistband.
Maybe I go back in what I said yesterday,Jcrew must keep their discounts because who would buy this stuff if it’s not supper cheap. I want made in Italy shoes and sweaters made to last with unique Jcrew distinction. My older clothes and shoes are so much better lol
Glad the sale is over, was tired of looking! Lol

    1. As far as new arrivals…meh…
I like the field jacket in black, but have a similar more utilitarian jacket that was a MADEWELL Collab. I actually noticed the dark green in my store on the sales rack but didn’t notice the price. I like how the black is styled with the waist tightened which is how id wear it. But it’s definitely not a need.

The pants don’t look flattering to me for the most part. I’d be curious about some of the 11” rise boyfriend denim, but I didn’t like the wash of the one I looked at in detail. The two wide leg chinos I looked at didn’t look great to Me. The foundry pants are the same as last year and I didn’t like the fit. Otherwise enough with the elastic waists.

The Kate pumps are cute but I have two pairs of the Sophia block heel pumps from a few years back, even though they are patent which I’m not into right now I don’t think I need more. The mules are adorable but I don’t think they’d be great for walking.

I miss the old styling that really inspired me to put outfits together. This inspired me to look in my closet and not buy anything new.

    2. Kate, I agree. My post got lost but we said similar things.

    3. Agreed. The colors are blah and I'm surprised to see so many summer items this late in the season. Next rollout must be fall? Hardly anything for work as I'm starting to think about going back to the office. I'd like to see the Bristol blazer in wool (I think I've only seen linen) I might try the zip front chino dress. No pretty prints :(

Also, I love puff sleeves but the smocked puff sleeve has to move on. Almost every non-button down shirt is that style. No thanks.

    4. I agree Suz Has. I did like the Kate pump, pink and yellow are summer colors! So would need to see if black is onsale at one point! Would like some grey pumps or suede. Just nothing saying wow to me! Yes my closet has lots of stuff that appears better then current! Lol

    5. I rolled my eyes at the bland colors, summer styles and elastic waist pants. When I hit the clogs, I smiled. By the time I reached the navy purse with white stitching (that combo will always remind me of leisure suits from the disco era) I laughed out loud. It was as if the design team had sat down and determined to design a fall rollout that would include all of my most hated fashion references. I wish J. Crew well and want it to survive until people start valuing well-made clothes again, so I really hope there are some who can rock these styles.

    6. @Anne, shipments were delayed. Next Autumn launch is somewhere between August 11th -17th.

    7. Lots of emphasis on sustainable, eco fabrics. I wonder how well that is selling. Disappointed that all the new cashmere is “ribbed,” looks cheap. All the relaxed fits, smocking, and washed-out colors aren’t for me, but I do like the Kate Ballet Pump in black and I want to try the Nordic Boot in lightweight leather in the caramel color.

    8. Exactly what Kate said and everyone else. Easy for me to do a shopping fast with these offerings. Yesterday I received a catalogue from Garnet Hill with the same shapeless, elastic waist, drab colors as J.Crew, but I think Garnet Hill has always been like that. No thanks. There is nothing chic or cheerful about this look.

    9. @MaryG, Hi Mary You win hilarious comment of the day! So true and on the mark. If this is J. Crew’s new direction I’m out. Time to pull out the good old Jcrew vintage pieces. The hopeful optimism I had is slowly heading towards are pessimism. Have a nice day and hope you’re well.

    10. @Lynn thanks for the info on the fall rollout!

    11. Thanks, Lynn. I hate to be negative, but I really need some fall clothes. Maybe it will get better. For you or anyone who likes dressing up, take a look at Miss Manners column in the Washington Post today. Four gents who like to dress up when they go out are regularly shamed for it. I wouldn't be comfortable embarrassing the poorly dressed like Miss Manners advises, but I did find the letter and responses to it interesting. I've been chided before for "dressing up" when I merely thought I was dressed appropriately and I'm sure others on this blog have too.

  3. Sooooo.... Ummmmm... Discount tomorrow?
    😁

There's a couple of things I like. Nothing that's ground breaking tho. And all of which I can wait on. There are still a lot of puffy, frilly things I don't like.

  4. ho hum … . Not that I’d bring back the Robin Hood Dines Out in Sherwood Forest lewk, or the Little Edie at Girl Scout Camp lewk, but COME ON.

    2. @wellfedfred as usual there with the ability to perfectly articulate my thoughts. So much for trending back to the “old J.Crew.” These designers are on a trip to nowhere fast.

  5. When I arrived at the landing page very early this morning one look at it and my mouth dropped. If this is what the CEO’s idea of what customers want she completely missed it the boat. One question I have is where is all the beautiful classic stuff?

  6. I had a good chuckle over the "J Crew in the woods" camping/hiking style story they had. JC is not the first, third or even the 10th brand I think of when I want some new hiking boots or clothes ( I did think those nordic hiking boots were cute though! vibram soles!) Crouching lakeside in your thin white cotton minidress and hitting the trails in your backless clog mules. I understand there is always a bit of fantasy and whimsy in these things, but in the old catalogs at least it was people strolling the grounds of a gorgeous estate or gathering around a huge fireplace. I think maybe 2 pairs of shoes made it to my "saved for later" list.

    1. I always thought of Jcrew as more sheek styling! Colors! Bold prints! Great fabric! But let’s be real that was ling tome ago and we living in nostalgia ( I know I am). Jcrew has not been same in many years! But the trade off is riding just on the name and good discounts!

    2. May be my fault, I did a survey earlier in the year and said I planned to do a lot of hiking this summer and fall. Which I do, but I wear shorts/sport bra/spf shirt.

Must say that prior years Nordic boots with shearling are my #1 most comfy cold weather shoe. (Not that I'd hike in them, I have sturdy weather proof boots for that) They are so comfy - I have a pair that have never been outdoors which I wear around our (cold!) house in winter.

  7. I find very little difference between madewell and jcrew new releases. Why have two sister brands if they are both twins?

    1. yes, so true! That new Epperson Mountaineering collab - a sling bag/fanny pack? Putting aside that the trend is going into it's 3rd or 4th year, but I'd expect to see that (and almost all the other new stuff) at Madewell. Well I guess JC saw where the sales were and is chasing the $. Bad news for the longtime Crew fans.

  9. I was just looking thru my recent orders from the 50-60% off sale...about 50/50 as far as liking what I bought.
-classic fit oxford cotton shirt -- liked it, bought the blue and the white. Nice weight to the fabric and I love button down collars. Only problem is didn't wash that great and will need ironed. I have old RL ocbds that wash beautifully and can hang dry or come out of the dryer ready to wear.

--button back linen shift -- way too big, armholes ridiculous, I had to wear a tank top under it. Nice linen and like that it's lined. Thinking to maybe add some darts to the back and see if it helps.

--lightweight cotton poplin short sleeve shirt (AW866), got the pink, one size down and it's still very loose and billowy. Material is THIN, tissue paper thin, (thinner!) but looks nice tucked into skirts. Got the pink. Needed to be ironed after wash and hang dry.

--linen v neck tee and linen muscle tank -- bought both in heather grey. Meh, very rough linen, the tank is see thru (how they made grey see thru I have no idea) will prob donate or sell. I have a linen tank from BR maybe 2 yrs ago and it's WAY nicer.

--midi in vintage plaid -- very nice, tts, not lined but I wear slips, very pretty pattern up close, color a bit bright for me but may fade a touch with washes and wears, love the length, pockets, everything. Goes with all my favorite neutrals (white, navy and gray).

--tuxedo popover shirt (AZ398), another pink shirt that is gossamer thin and basically transparent. HUGE fit giant in the body but shoulders fit and sleeve length is good, so a very odd look indeed. Will donate or sell.

--relaxed fit poplin mini gingham shirt in white clay -- this one I didn't even see until it hit FS. Yet another way oversized shirt that I am swimming in. I washed and machine dried it and couldn't get it to shrink at all. Could have prob gone down 2 sizes. May try it with white jeans, but it likely won't stay in my closet.

  10. Slightly OT: last winter (I think, it’s all a blur) I had bought the snakeskin print camera bag. I also bought the red one and swapped out the strap for a Longchamp printed webbing strap that came with another bag. I get compliments almost each time I’m out with the red bag and the size is great for essentials. I just wasn’t as crazy about the coloring on the snakeskin print.
I noticed a Clare V Snakeskin bag on the NSale—slightly different colors but similar size bag with a red and navy striped webbing strap. I thought this might be a fun way to add a little interest and sportiness to my snakeskin bag. Found a black and white striped webbing strap with gold hardware on Amazon for $10. Such an easy swap and now my snakeskin print bag will be ready for fall and will work well with my more sporty everyday attire but also my usual dinner date attire.
