Nothing for me. In part because I'm trying to cut back on the shopping... And in part because I'm tired of playing these stupid pricing games.
ReplyDeleteThe nearest J.Crew store to me is two hours away, but I'm not visiting the "online store." I started my self-imposed shopping ban on March 10, so I guess I'm about a month in on this endeavor. When I think on that, it sounds sort of absurd. Should I get a trophy? I'm ashamed to say that this is actually an accomplishment.
ReplyDeleteI haven't had "cravings," but I've stopped looking, so there aren't temptations around me. It is actually a relief. I had been caught up in the purchase and re-order at a lower price, then return, and having to keep track of all that. For what? Something I didn't need and didn't truly love, but it was such a steal. As some of you know, this can result in too much accumulation.
Now I am spending the weekend digging through the wreckage of my past--one category at a time. Today it's shoes. Tomorrow it's pants. On Sunday I will give myself a day of rest and contemplation.
My original goal for the shopping ban is/was Memorial Day. Then I thought about making it Labor Day because I need absolutely nothing more (and so much less) than I already have for the warmer months. We shall see.
Some of you told me that you are interested in this personal journey of mine. I will share honestly about my experience and tell you about the good, the bad, the successes, and the fails...until you tell me not to.

DeleteHi, Mme Jacqueline - please do keep sharing if you are comfortable doing so. I would like to move more in the direction you are moving in (but not having much success). I think we all understand that you are sharing your own personal story, and there is no criticism of others who choose to go a different route. I think it's definitely possible to be an "aficonada" and yet reduce/eliminate purchases. (I just haven't figured out how to get there yet.)
DeleteThank you for sharing. I so often tell myself that I deserve to shop, since I do not have any other vices. The reality is I am just spending money frivolously for the dopamine hit. Headed to Gap after work with a big return of inexpensive sale items.
DeleteThat's right lovely ladies....I am sharing only MY story and journey. We are all in different places with everything in life, so my sharing is definitely NOT in judgment of anyone else. In fact, I'm trying to go easy on the self-flagellation during this process, and that is challenging.
DeleteI have done all of the justifications about where I "might" wear something because, you know, something "might" come up. Then if/when something does come up, there I am shopping again! It's insanity! I'm tired of being this person who does this addictive and wasteful type of shopping.
Even though I am reading minimalist books and blogs, we know that each person's idea of "minimizing" and a very individual thing. Some things don't apply to me, and there may be other suggestions that I'm not ready for--at least not at this time.
Thank you for allowing me to share because I also appreciate so much that you understand and are not judging me. Well, okay, you can sit there silently and shake your head and think, "Wow! This woman is twisted. I'm not that bad." That's fine. Just don't say it. I already know it.
My husband is away for a few hours today, so I am going to drag out every single pair of shoes. I will NOT take a photo. Nope. Perhaps you understand that I need to be in shoe Hell while he is away because I don't want to hear the comments.
A nasty little truth about the shoes: I have purchased duplicates when I think something is really comfortable or special. This is definitely something I am NOT proud of!
Perhaps more later if I survive today's project.
Duplicates in the same color or just style. I admit I buy multiple colors of shoes, especially because I don’t wear much color. No judging at all!
DeleteI also regularly buy multiple colors of the same shoes when they’re comfortable and I like the style. Recently: Minnetonka moosehide kilty in all 3 colors. They are like walking on a cloud, but do I really need every color? I have sometimes wondered if it’s better to just buy one pair and wear it out. I don’t know. I have a fairly large shoe wardrobe that I really love, with many special and unique pairs. I enjoy looking at them. They’re like art. Objectively I have too much to wear them all regularly, but I don’t really want to downsize them.
DeleteMme Jacqueline - at least when you purchased duplicates they were comfortable or special. I purchased (and continue to purchase) duplicates just because "they're such a great deal". And by duplicates, I mean duplicates in the same color as well as in different colors.
Delete@Suz Has and Toronto Modern: I said I would tell the whole truth about me, the habit, and the journey, so here goes. Ugh. I have purchased duplicate shoes in duplicate colors in case something happens to the original pair. I might add that the second pair was almost always purchased because of the "good deal." It has been foolish and resulted in soooo much excess. Not happy with myself, but I am determined to change for good!
DeleteThis is a quote from Peter Walsh (a decluttering expert): "Inexpensive is not a good reason to buy something. Expensive is not a good reason to keep something).
If something expensive is a mistake, then it is better to let it go than having it around as a reminder.
I'll report tomorrow on how my weekend went being in "Shoe Hell." This was good aversion therapy to face down the wreckage of my past.
I need to add that this habit of purchasing duplicates started with online shopping. When I actually shopped in stores, I did not return to buy a duplicate of anything.
DeleteIn fact, even though I've always loved clothes, shoes, bags, scarves, etc., I only really got carried away with the ability to shop online. Not that I was ever a minimalist.
I’m also not looking at Crew. Not interested in much, I’ll evaluate my need for shorts a little later in the season but I think I’m ok. I looked at sneakers at madewell but really don’t need them. I’m wearing what I have and liking them.
ReplyDeleteI do need help, guidance, whatever though. I mentioned a few weeks ago that I was considering Jess Kamm sailor pants. The price is insane. I have similar pants from Everlane but they’re not the same. The rise on the Kamm is higher, the material is different. I know they will fit me well. I’m driving myself crazy looking at second hand sites/pages. I was considering the denim which sold out from under me twice and the only other color I’d wear is black. Do I do it and stop buying pants forever, forget it because it’s stupid, or what. I was thinking denim because I have so many pairs of black pants but maybe black is actually more versatile. I’m driving myself crazy, I admit it.
Could you try to sew yourself a Jess Kamm dupe? It could be a fun endeavor. With the decline in quality at most retailers, I am looking into making my own button downs using old J.Crew shirts as a template and Liberty of London fabrics purchased on sale. I could fail miserably but it’s worth a try. Merchant & Mills has a few basic/minimalist (seemingly easy) patterns that also seem beginner friendly.
DeleteI have seen people on IG showing off their me-made version and have even seen a pattern mentioned but I don’t know how to sew and my girls have the machine in ATL. I probably could have a seamstress make a custom version for less, but not much less. Maybe I will learn to sew one day...it’s been something I’ve wanted to learn for a long time.
Deletemixed feelings here.... felt vindicated when pointy shoes came back and I unearthed the RL collection black leather pumps which I had accidentally bought 2 pairs of (long story, but not for this comment) - but I also realize that just because I hadn’t gained weight on my toes doesn’t mean that the next piece of buried treasure will be a reclaimed triumph for my hips.

I've made a couple of shirts from Liberty fabric and you all have identified the major problems. Cost of fabric and time invested isn't much worth it unless you're absolutely in love with the fabric. I bought a Peter Max style print and made a shirt that I love (Vogue 9029). People comment on it all the time. The pattern was great, but most patterns are pretty awful and even if you make a muslin first, you can't necessarily tell how it will look. I made a Liberty pear print from what looked like a nice pattern, but it had no darts through the torso and ended up looking blousy and awful. With a good machine, buttonholes aren't the big deal they used to be. I actually think continuous laps are totally evil and should be eliminated from all sleeves.
DeleteA colleague of mine own a pair of Kamm. She loves them and wears them with so much joy. I tried them and they didn’t look good on me. She is more slender with long torso. I recall her saying that the quality and fit are unmatched. Especially for the non denim ones. I think for denim ones she prefers Mother or Khaite. I am not sure of the names. Both are in the Kamm price range. Hth Suz. I am a big believer in self discipline but shopping brings me too much joy. I can’t quit. I have a tight budget and try to buy quality and classic pieces.
DeleteWell, the stars aligned. I just so happened to check and the 0 denim was available so I ordered. I think the canvas looks more durable but the black seems to be more readily available secondhand, though still quite expensive.
DeleteIf I love them I’ll be thrilled, if not back they go. Now I really have good reason to not shop and get rid of anything I don’t love.
AND if I really love them and want the black it will be the perfect opportunity to pass on every single other pair of pants that doesn’t bring me absolute joy. I want to look good in my clothes, I’m sick of pants that don’t fit well.

ReplyDeleteIt is 100 percent true. It’s too easy to spend $20 or so on a pair of pants (now final sale) that are just ok.
DeleteI have no idea if these pants will be worth it. But I will be tallying up all the pants I know I could do without and see what happens.
I am no minimalist or capsule person but I love listening/reading the stories so I am all in on your journey Mme.J., gives me inspiration. I can also spend other people's $$$ much quicker than I spend my own, so SuzHas, the splurge might be worth all those black pants that don't give you the joy-feeling.
Delete14 years ago, I bought a pair of DVF pants. I debated and watched them everyday, over & over before adding them to my cart and buying. The pants were WAY more than I EVER thought that I'd spend for black pants ...I mean you can buy black pants anywhere. However, I realize even today that they may have been one of the BEST purchases in my closet. They are still my favs, beautiful and in style especially with today's quality-issues. And my cost per wear = FREE several years ago.

DeleteI keep justifying my choice by reminding myself this is not a trendy cut, my favorite pants have always been high waisted wide leg. I’m not sure if denim would be better than black but it’s easier to exchange for black than to stalk the denim.
This weekend I’ve continued evaluating my closet and it’s very clear my favorite casual pants are not the bargain ones.
Tomorrow is the day of reckoning (ok a little dramatic) but I will definitely report back.

DeleteBack in 2000, I purchased a black Armani pants suit for a special occasion. I was choking on the price at that time. Everything about it is perfect, and I continue to wear it. I wish that most of my purchases were like this one. The price of that suit amortized over all these years makes the cost-per-wear extraordinary.

DeleteI did an in store pickup for the Liberty Mini Floral Walk beach tunic and button down shirt. I really like the print & fit was tts. I paired the tunic with white denim and Lucy silk stripe bow slides in bubble gum pink & marigold. It's a really cute pairing with the slides picking up the bubble gum pink & marigold in the tunic. The tunic can also be worn alone as a cover up or with shorts.

DeleteI washed in cold wash and line dried. I always line-dry my Liberty cotton items. The construction is odd, I agree. But did work on my “no torso” frame. Fingers crossed for you Liz. It’s a lovely pattern.
DeleteIt’s very disturbing to hear about the Liberty of London fabric shrinking. I’ve always been impressed with the quality of their fabric. I put all of my Liberty items through the washer (cold) and dryer (low) with no problems. I really hope this isn’t an indication of a decrease in the quality.
DeleteI probably shouldn’t mention this since so many of us are trying to declutter or reduce spending, but 6pm.com (Zappos/Amazon outlet site) has quite a few past season J.Crew and Madewell shoes and boots on sale right now.
