I regretted NOT buying these end of season last year as jcrews espadrilles hurt my feet. Found them hidden on the site, not final sale. Will report back.

ReplyDeleteThe shopping fast is the easy part. Phew! This is tiring. I try to discipline myself to only do so much in one day because if I get too tired and overwhelmed, I'll throw up my hands and begin to make poor decisions. All of this stuff didn't accumulate in just a few days, and the deaccessioning process will not be done overnight. I keep telling myself this.
Purchasing provides immediate gratification in the lavender haze of the dopamine surge. Purging is good and makes me begin to feel cleaner, but it requires much more effort than all of the gradual acquisition did--even though both "activities" eat up time.
My inspiration for today comes from Courtney Carver at bemorewithless.com:
"Slow progress is still progress. It's not how fast we get there but that we arrive in good condition. That's what really matters."
I experienced another example of owning clothes for my mythical life today. I planned my outfit ahead of time: collection silk-twill button-up shirt in jungle print
Delete(L1856), a garment I absolutely love but never wear, with a pair of my favorite J.Crew boyfriend jeans and Frye Carson ballet flats in vintage black (another item I love but rarely wear). I realized the problem when I was getting dressed: my plans for the day included cleaning my AC unit, scrubbing my trash and recycling bins, sanding and applying drywall mud plus a trip to Walmart for more cat litter, garbage bags, AC filters and drywall patches. So I wore the jeans with a white perfect tee and a pair of well worn Frye white leather slip-on sneakers that I rescued from the Goodwill bag at the last minute. I realized I need to keep some shoes to wear when I am doing dirty jobs, which is most days LOL.
@Jeanne: Your post made me smile. I have that exact same silk shirt in the jungle print, and so far it belongs to my mythical life. I have never worn it.
DeleteIt seems a little "wild" to wear to my small, traditional Anglican church. Not that anyone would really care, but it's how it makes me feel. Then I would have to wear something under it and over it to be warm enough, so I really have no idea when or where this shirt will emerge from the closet.
Perhaps I should just frame it!
@Jeanne and MmeJacqueline, I wore this shirt to work from home last Friday! My husband thought it was terrific. I've been making an effort to dress up to work from home throughout the last year, for me it's a mood lifter. I do have to change my clothing again after work, but that's the same as when I went to the office every day.
Delete@pbanos: Good for you! You are so right that dressing well does lift one's spirit. I do not own any sweatpants and "athleisure" type of garments because I just don't need them. I get myself dressed pretty soon in the morning--casual pants, tee, sweater.
DeleteHopefully I will someday be able to live my mythical life, too. For now, I’m still working on a complete remodel of my house and I’ve barely started with landscaping. At least I’m getting a little more wear out of some holey Saturday pants and stained tees.
DeleteSounds like my life Jeanne, with watching softball and working out mixed in. I actually try to wear real pants for gardening. Like my everlane carpenter pants. I feel like it’s a great way to break them in. A light chambray shirt is also good. Cooler than a T-shirt and more protective from the sun.
DeleteBembien Lily Bag is going back. I love a pretty, high quality rattan shoulder or handle bag for summer and vacations, and I was excited when J Crew started to offer these in addition to the (cheap) wicker clutches. However, it was small, misshapen, and had an overwhelming odor of smoke. These bags are handmade so some variations are to be expected, but not worth the high J Crew price.
ReplyDeleteFor comparison, I ordered two Amerii ata bags direct from the Amerii web site at half the price. Similar styles and better quality. Direct from Bali artisans, perfectly packaged in a dust bag, beautiful. Keeping both and may order more for gifts.
I like the Amerii bags. I have one. I got it from Marshall’s for $40.
