  2. JCAs I need some suggestions.
A friend is turning 50 and is having a studio54 themed dance/karaoke party and the invitation says “Costumes expected! Or at least wear an outfit that will get you past the velvet ropes!”
I know I’m overthinking it but initially I was planning on just wearing leather pants a la Joan Jett but now I realize that’s more 80s style not 70s.
I don’t want to buy something specific that won’t get worn, I have leather pants (fitted and more trouser cut) , the MADEWELL metallic wide leg pants that are cropped, pleated black wide leg pants (both cropped and very long, maybe too long for dancing), black sleeveless tops, black silk blouses, and since it will be winter it might be a good time to break out the fur coats passed down to me that I never wear.
Also, side note, we have another party the same night we are going to try and get to and it’s right before my own 50th birthday.
    Thanks for brainstorming with me!

    1. what a cool theme. sequins are the first thing that come to mind. Also metallics. Look up old pics of Debbie Harry for inspo :). Definitely break out the fur coats!

    2. stripes! tube tops! (probably too cold for those). :D

    3. I know you have a limited palette in your closet but definitely be more colorful than all black! Sequins and metallics for sure. Knee-high boots if you're cold. I love the idea of a fur coat over a metallic dress with knee-highs.

    4. I have a sequin scarf from crew but it’s black.
The only dress I have can actually pass for 70s, it’s a one shoulder reddish satiny above the knee dress. I wore it to a wedding this summer and have had it about seven years. I could always wear it with fishnets. Would prob not work well to transition to the party we have later that night though! Lol. And it will be cold most likely, mid December. I hadn’t thought of that dress.
Def not buying something specific for the party as I have a closet full of dressy clothes I don’t wear often enough,

    5. Are you definitely going to hit the party afterwards? If so, I would keep my 70's attire to a minimum and wear something passable to both...

    6. Most likely, it’s on the way home and they’re good friends. A few people are attending both so it wouldn’t be inappropriate for me to be wearing festive attire. Typically people dress holiday festive. Ironically I am remembering I’ve worn the red dress with both groups for parties years ago, not that I’m worried about them remembering. They’ve also all seen me In The metallic pants and leather pants. So I don’t want to wear a crazy costume (although the second group is part of the Halloween crowd) but I’m not co corned about looking a little over the top,

    7. I like the metallic pants and boots idea as a starting point, but I know the leather pants are such a winning look and I'm thinking of Sandy in Grease. That would be easy to duplicate with your wardrobe and something you'd feel comfortable wearing. Maybe get your hair looking extra shagalicious for the night?

    8. Ironically when I booked my haircut (at my last haircut in sept) the date that worked the best was the day of the party, so I will def have my stylist tease it more than usual.

    9. I was thinking the metallic pants maybe even tucked into high boots like knickers of the late 70s with a leather vest and a black silk button down might work well. I can always remove the vest for the second party (and untuck the pants). Or maybe I’ll wear a white button down and tie a la Diane Keaton with the metallic pants. I could prob find a vest easily at a thrift store for a few bucks or just wear a leather one I bought for another costume. 😆

    10. Sequins or metallics, not leather, probably not cropped pants. Do you have a jumpsuit? Something with a low neckline? Maybe try a thrift store for a cheap dress?

You could try to concentrate on making the hair and jewelry very glam 70s, since you're going somewhere after. Big 70s style sunglasses or big hair and/or a glam headscarf.

    11. Def no low neckline. Totally not me. I’m more of a Joan Jett or Annie Hall than Bianca Jagger, although I did see her rocking some pant suits which I might try.
I specifically remember culottes (like cropped pants) as mentioned in the late 1970s.

    12. I should clarify I am going for a late 70s look, kind of when disco was fading out and rock and roll was taking over (at least in the NYC area). Not an early 70s hippie look.

At any rate I have some potential looks. I’m omitting the dress only because I don’t want to freeze my butt off.

The Jcrew tall high heel boots totally have the vibe I’m going for. I used to have a pair of Aldo tall lace up/ look/side zip boots were perfect but they seem to have disappeared in my move last year.

Pleated wide leg pants in black or metallic tucked in work for that knicker/gaucho look I remember from 1978/1979 or so. However the skinny leather pants tucked in are my favorite of the three for the occasion. I like it with a leather zip up vest, ruffled tuxedo top and tie but could also do a silk or poly button down with some chains. A big chestnut colored mink from my MIL will keep me warm.
Hair and makeup will be exaggerated. .

    13. Oh I do have that JCREW collection silk blouse that’s black with red trim and a big pink bow neck. That also looks great with the vest and from research those blouses were big in the late 70s.

    14. Thanks everyone for playing along. I don’t want it to feel too costumey, more like a slightly more late 70s version of myself.

  3. Ooh that's a fun time. Sequins and fur are really perfect. Mini skirt and boots with a heel would work. In the '70s tall boots were worn with culottes, so those metallic crops may work out. If you have any bright scarfs long enough they can make a belt or headband with long ends hanging down. Sleeveless is good, balloon sleeves were a thing then too.

  4. I received the pleated wool flannel skirt yesterday from the recent roll out (AF944). At first I wanted to return it because the material is not that great - 60% wool, 20% poly, 20% viscose - it feel like maybe a $40 or $50 skirt. But really wanting some wintery type skirts to wear with tights and I like that it's longer (bought the tall size and I'm 5'10"), so decided to keep. Will probably regret when I see it for 60% off sale price in January. I think I paid $94. A pic of it on my insta today, ID navybluecardigan

  6. Received the foulard print pajama set in viscose. Pattern is very pretty and the fabric is soft. Actual sizing across the chest measures at 38” for an XS which I measured. Sizing is different from what VPS had At 39.5” Pity they don’t sell the top separately because I just wanted to wear it with jeans. I don’t wear pajamas:) I paid a decent fair price, otherwise they’re not worth full price.

  7. @lynn Thanks for the info re the foulard top! Mine is on its way. I was thinking the same: would have been great if you could buy the top separately. I’m thinking I might wear the pants in summer (as they’re probably too cold for winter in my northern climate) with a chambray shirt.

    1. @fleur de lys, forgot to add the top is shorter on me than depicted online in the XS however I like it a little shorter as I’m still trying to keep the look classic. Agree, too light for the NL in winter, S Florida would be fine. I recall you mentioned Fl at some point. Just arrived and will wear it under the sweater blazer or without, with white jeans, dark jeans and cropped pants. Fabulous with pink too!! Chilly week ahead.

  8. @Suz, Received the Everlane wide leg cropped pants you suggested. They are perfect!! Nice straight cut, perfect length, and the width on the bottom doesn’t fan out a lot. Nice classic cut for me. Thanks so much!

    1. Oh so glad. Which ones did you get, the heavier ones with the pockets or the lighter weight without? I like both...the lightweight ones were perfect this summer and fall. The leg shape is ideal and I feel like they look so much better IRLthan on the pics online. Enjoy!

    2. @Suz, Both although I prefer ones without the pockets. Navy, black and bone. Will keep all. Finally pants that look great in length and width at such a great price. Perfect as you described. Thanks again.

    3. Wonderful, I’m so happy to hear that.

  9. Peyton Wide leg cropped glen plaid pants, nice pants had to size up and then tailor the width at the hem. No open pockets, no problem they’re more flattering as is.
